The structural stability of silt foundations, particularly sensitive to moisture content, can be severely compromised by recurring wetting and drying processes. This not only threatens the foundational integrity but also raises grave concerns about the long-term safety of major civil engineering endeavors. Addressing this critical issue, our study delves into the transformative effects of reclaimed polyester fiber on subgrade silt exposed to such environmental stressors. Through rigorous wet–dry cycle tests on this enhanced soil, we evaluate shifts in shear strength across varying confining pressures. We also dissect the interplay between average pore diameter, particle distribution, and morphology in influencing the soil's microstructural responses to these cycles. A detailed analysis traces the structural damage timeline in the treated soil, elucidating the intertwined micro–macro dynamics driving strength reduction. Key discoveries indicate a notably non-linear trajectory of shear strength degradation, marked by distinct phases of rapid, subdued, and stabilized strength attrition. Alterations within the micropores induce a rise in both their count and size, ultimately diminishing the total volume proportion of the reinforced soil. Intriguingly, particle distribution is directly tied to the wet–dry cycle frequency, while the fractal dimension of soil particles consistently wanes. This research identifies cement hydrolysis and pore expansion as the dominant culprits behind the observed macroscopic strength degradation due to incessant wet–dry cycles. Reinforced concrete structures in the marine environment face serious corrosion risks. Coating protection and adding corrosion inhibitors are the most economical and effective methods. In this study, a nano-composite anti-corrosion filler with a mass ratio of CeO2:GO = 4:1 was prepared by hydrothermally growing cerium oxide on the surface of graphene oxide. The filler was mixed with pure epoxy resin at a mass fraction of 0.5% to prepare a nano-composite epoxy coating. The basic properties of the prepared coating were evaluated from the aspects of surface hardness, adhesion grade, and anti-corrosion performance on Q235 low carbon steel subjected to simulated seawater and simulated concrete pore solutions. Results showed that after 90 days of service, the corrosion current density of the nanocomposite coating mixed with corrosion inhibitor was the lowest (Icorr = 1.001 × 10−9 A/cm2), and the protection efficiency was up to 99.92%. As a porous biomass sustainable material, cellulose aerogel has attracted significant attention due to its unique properties in various applications. However, its mechanical stability and hydrophobicity are huge obstacles hindering practical applications. In this work, nano-lignin quantitative doping cellulose nanofiber aerogel was successfully fabricated via liquid nitrogen freeze drying combing vacuum oven drying. The impact of various parameters (lignin content, temperature, and matrix concentration) on the property of the as-prepared materials was systematically explored, revealing the optimum conditions. The morphology, mechanical properties, internal structure, and thermal degradation of the as-prepared aerogels were characterized by various methods (compression test, contact angle, SEM, BET, DSC, and TGA). Compared with pure cellulose aerogel, the addition of nano-lignin did not significantly change the pore size and specific surface area of the material but could improve its thermal stability. In particular, the enhanced mechanical stable and hydrophobic properties of cellulose aerogel via the quantitative doping of nano-lignin was confirmed. The mechanical compressive strength of 160–13.5 C/L-aerogel is as high as 0.913 MPa, while the contact angle was nearly reaching 90°. The lamellar structure of graphene oxide and the filling effect of nano-cerium oxide particles together provide a good barrier and stability to coating. In this paper, cerium oxide-graphene oxide (4:1) nanocomposite was prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis method. The effect of cerium oxide–graphene oxide (4:1) nanocomposite on the anticorrosion properties of epoxy coating in simulated acid rain solution was studied by open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Mott–Schottky curve, Tafel curve, and micromorphological characterization, in order to compare it with pure epoxy coating, graphene oxide epoxy coating, and cerium oxide epoxy coating. The obtained results showed that cerium oxide–graphene oxide (4:1) epoxy coating's protection efficiency was as high as 98.62%. These results indicated that cerium oxide–graphene oxide modified anticorrosive coating had an excellent application prospect in an acid rain environment. Meanwhile, owing to the poor protection ability of epoxy resin and unstably hydrolysis product of CeO2 to the acidic medium, the resistance of CeO2–GO (4:1)/EP coating to acidic corrosive medium was relatively poorer than that of neutral and saline-alkali corrosive medium. There are abundant sea-sand resources on the earth. Traditional sea-sand concrete faced various problems relating to insufficient anticorrosion ability. In this paper, artificial seawater, sea sand, industrial waste, steel fiber, and polycarboxylate superplasticizer were used to prepare ultra-high-performance polymer cement mortar (SSUHPC). At the same time, freshwater river-sand ultra-high-performance polymer cement mortar (FRUHPC) with the same mixing ratio was prepared for comparative study. The compressive strength of SSUHPC reached 162.1 MPa, while the that of FRUHPC reached 173.3 MPa, which was slightly higher. Meanwhile, SSUHPC showed excellent anticorrosion characteristics in terms of carbonization, frost resistance and chloride resistance, and especially for sulfate resistance. The composition of SSUHPC was separated into three parts: mortar, pore and steel fiber, and the performance difference mechanisms of SSUHPC and FRUHPC were investigated by X-ray computed tomography (X-CT), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The hydration degree of mortar in SSUHPC was higher, with higher content of CSH and CH, and its better optimized gel pore characteristics gave SSUHPC better corrosion resistance. The mechanical properties of SSUHPC were slightly poor due to the uneven dispersion of steel fibers and air pores, with an- air pore porosity of 1.52% (above 200 μm) that was twice that of FRUHPC (0.6%). In this paper, the mechanics and anticorrosion performance of ultra-high-performance polymer cement mortar prepared with seawater sea sand were comprehensively evaluated, and the mechanism of performance difference between SSUHPC and FRUHPC was revealed, conducive to the targeted improvement of sea sand concrete. An extremely efficient lubrication system is achieved in synovial joints by means of bio-lubricants and sophisticated nanostructured surfaces that work together. Molecular bottlebrush structures play crucial roles for this superior tribosystem. For example, lubricin is an important bio-lubricant, and aggrecan associated with hyaluronan is important for the mechanical response of cartilage. Inspired by nature, synthetic bottlebrush polymers have been developed and excellent aqueous boundary lubrication has been achieved. In this review, we summarize recent experimental investigations of the interfacial lubrication properties of surfaces coated with bottlebrush bio-lubricants and bioinspired bottlebrush polymers. We also discuss recent advances in understanding intermolecular synergy in aqueous lubrication including natural and synthetic polymers. In the marine service environment, metal materials have a serious risk of corrosion. The corrosion rate of metal materials will be accelerated by the dual action of temperature change and alkali salt in saline-alkali environment. In order to delay the metal materials' corrosion rate and prolong their service life, this paper used a CeO2–GO (4:1) nanocomposite prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis method to make an anticorrosion coating. The anticorrosion performance was evaluated by stereo microscope and 3D images of the corrosion site were fitted for calculation. The state evolution of the CeO2–GO (4:1)/EP coating immerged in a simulated saline-alkali solution was studied by open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical alternating current impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Mott–Schottky curve and Tafel curve. The results indicated that CeO2–GO (4:1) nanocomposites exhibited good resistance compared with graphene oxide and nano cerium oxide in a simulated saline-alkali environment. The research in this paper lays a firm theoretical foundation for the application of nano cerium-oxide-modified graphene oxide anticorrosive coating in saline-alkali environment engineering. To improve the poor adhesion and the ensuing insufficient anticorrosion efficacy of electropolymerized polypyrrole (PPy) on copper surface, an inverted-electrode strategy was applied after the passivation procedure, for which the compact coating (PPy-I) was deposited on the substrate in a cathodic window. Morphological and physical characterizations revealed that PPy-I exerted satisfactory adhesion strength and suitable thickness and conductivity compared with the analogue prepared via the traditional protocol (PPy-T). Potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and frequency modulation were employed to ascertain the propitious protection of PPy-I for copper in artificial seawater (ASW). Due to the dominant electroactivity, the PPy-I-coated sample possessed higher apparent current density and lower charge transfer resistance than its PPy-T-protected counterpart, which maintained the passivation of the substrate. Surface analysis also supported the viability of PPy-I for copper in ASW for a well-protected surface with inferior water wettability. Molecular dynamics simulations evidenced that PPy-I with the higher density retained efficient anticorrosion capacity on copper at elevated temperatures. Therein, the derived time-dependent spatial diffusion trajectories of ions were locally confined with low diffusion coefficients. Highly twisted pore passages and anodic protection behavior arising respectively from the tight coating architecture and electroactivity contributed to the adequate corrosion resistance of PPy-I-coated copper. The lack of river sand is becoming increasingly serious. In this study, we consider how to use sea sand to prepare innovative construction and building materials with excellent mechanical and durability properties. Sulphate corrosion causes expansion, cracking and spalling of concrete, resulting in the reduction or even loss of concrete strength and cementation force. In this paper, artificial seawater, sea sand, industrial waste, steel fiber and polycarboxylate superplasticizer were used to prepare ultra-high-performance polymer cement mortar (SSUHPC), and the sulphate corrosion mechanism was investigated. The strength and cementation force of mortar on the SSUHPC surface decreased and flaked off with the development of sulphate erosion, and the steel fiber rusted and fell off. A 3D model was established based on X-ray computed tomography (X-CT), and the results showed that SSUHPC maintained excellent internal structural characteristics despite severe sulphate erosion on the surface. Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were adopted to investigate the sulphate corrosion mechanism of SSUHPC. We found a transition zone within 1–5 mm of the surface of SSUHPC. The Vickers hardness of mortar in this area was increased by 5~15%, and the porosity was reduced to 3.8489%. Obvious structural damage did not occur in this area, but a high content of gypsum appeared. UHPC prepared with seawater sea sand was found to have better sulphate resistance than that prepared with freshwater river sand, which supports the development and utilization of sea sand in concrete. Graphene is a two-dimensional sheet of regular hexagonal honeycomb lattice formed by sp2 hybrid orbital bonding, with only one layer thickness of a single atom, which is known as the "super king" of the 21st century. Previous studies have shown that cerium oxide-graphene oxide (CeO2-GO(4:1)) nanocomposites eliminated the agglomeration of graphene to some extent and the CeO2-GO(4:1) epoxy coating could be prepared with good anti-corrosion performance. In this paper, CeO2-GO(4:1) nanocomposites were prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis method, and the three-electrode method was used for electrochemical tests. The state evolution of CeO2-GO(4:1)/EP coating and the synergy between CeO2-GO(4:1)/EP and corrosion inhibitor in simulated seawater solution with different concentrations (20%, 40%, 60%) were analyzed and illustrated by Optical Microscope (OM) characterization, Open Circuit Potential (OCP), Electrochemical alternating current Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Mott–Schottky curve and Tafel curve. The results indicated that CeO2-GO(4:1) nanocomposites showed good corrosion resistance in a marine environment. Due to its special two-dimensional lamellar structure, graphene possesses an excellent shielding effect, hydrophobic characteristics and large specific surface area, which can effectively isolate the internal structure from the external corrosive media. However, lamellar graphene is easy to stack and agglomerate, which limits its anti-corrosion performance. In this paper, cerium oxide-graphene oxide (CeO2-GO) nanocomposites were prepared by a hydrothermal synthesis method. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were applied for microstructure examination, showing that a large number of nanoscale granular cerium oxide grew on the lamellar graphene oxide surface, which improved the dispersion performance of graphene inside the matrix. The anti-corrosion properties of the coating were analyzed and illustrated by open circuit potential (OCP), frequency response analysis, Tafel curve and Mott–Schottky curve. The results indicated that the CeO2-GO (4:1) nanocomposite not only eliminated the agglomeration of graphene to some extent, but also prepared the graphene epoxy coating with good dispersion, which further promoted its anti-corrosion performance. The paper proposed a feasible solution for GO dispersion in cement-based materials and lays a solid theoretical foundation for the engineering application of cerium oxide-graphene oxide modified anticorrosive coating.
