The following article presents the first mould ever discovered for casting a so-called "Syrian Bottle", a distinctive vessel type that originated in Mesopotamia around the mid 3rd millennium BC and soon after spread to Anatolia, the Aegean and Southeast Europe, as imports and local derivatives. A few examples were made from precious metals and lead, the most notable one being a golden globular bottle, part of "Priam's" Treasure A" from Early Bronze Age Troy. The mould from Lipnik seems to have been intended for the production of small metal bottles of 'Syrian' shape, and supportive agents like a green sand core applied for the production of such a complex item. The mould, however, was obviously never used. A review of associated manufacturing details like pegholes, riser and vent show that although these features were particularly prominent in the 2nd millennium BC, moulds from earlier (Anatolian) contexts do possess such characteristics as well. This currently unique, locally produced example is therefore dated to the latest 3rd or earliest second millennium BC, coinciding with ever-growing interaction between distant cultural entities stretching from Mesopotamia to Southeast Europe and beyond, and allowing for the exchange of ideas, fashions and technologies. Folgender Beitrag behandelt die vorerst einzige bekannte Gussform für sogenannte 'Syrische Flaschen', einen ursprünglich in Mesopotamien beheimateten Gefäβtypus des mittleren 3. Jahrtausends v. Chr., der in den folgenden Jahrhunderten sowohl als Import als auch lokale Kopie aus einschlägigen Fundzusammenhängen Anatoliens, der Ägäis und Südosteuropas bekannt ist. Einige dieser 'syrischen' Flaschen wurden aus Metall gefertigt, wobei die goldene kugelförmige Flasche aus dem troianischen "Schatzfund A" die wohl bekannteste Variante repräsentiert. Die hier vorgestellte Gussform diente ebenso zur Anfertigung bauchiger Flaschen vom troianischen Typus, Nassgusssand hätte möglicherweise als Hilfsmittel für die Herstellung gedient – die Form wurde jedoch offenkundig nie zum Guss verwendet. Eine kritische Autopsie technischer Details wie Gusskanälen oder Passstiftlöchern belegt, dass sich vergleichbare anatolische Gussformen für Gebrauchsgerät in das früheste zweite und wohl auch späte 3. vorchristliche Jahrtausend datieren lassen. Die Gussform aus Lipnik kann daher als bislang einzigartiges, lokal gefertigtes Sachzeugnis für den Guss von Flaschen "syrischen" Typs im Rahmen der einschlägig bekannten interregionalen Kontakte zwischen Mesopotamien, Anatolien, der Ägäis und Südosteuropa im späteren 3. Different craftspeople and their area of influence can be identified from a craftsperson's perspective, and, as such, so too can workshops and contact networks. With knowledge of distinct techniques, the different skill levels of craftspeople, and their affiliation to each other, the organisation of metal craft within the Nordic Bronze Age can be better understood. Complex craft organisation is very likely to have existed within the Nordic Bronze Age, in which the production of prestige goods occurred in differently-structured workshops. Through taking into account signs of apprenticeship and cross-craft techniques, as well as the different categories of flaws in crafting, a viable image of craft organisation within the Nordic Bronze Age can be developed. This paper investigates the intensive exchange of technological knowledge between workshops within and during the Nordic Bronze Age, and reconstructs inferred contact networks. Distinct traces on bronze ornaments that show the development of specific technologies, technological innovation, and the specific use of stylistic elements, clearly separate single workshops from each other. survey in north-eastern Georgia, carried out in August 2016 and funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, permitted us to study the occurrence and potential exploitation of copper ores in the northern valleys and most important confluences of the Alazani River. It was possible to confirm the findings of previous studies, and new occurrences of copper ore were found. Lead isotope analyses were carried out on the copper ores found, as well as on Late Bronze Age daggers from Koban and Chmi, Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, Russia, to compare their signature, which allows conclusions to be drawn regarding the local use of copper ores. The authors present and discuss two segregated metal workshop sites at the Hunn burial ground in Østfold, south-east Norway, and address topics like the scale and character of the production and the cultural context of the finds. One of these sites, the Midtfeltet site, represents one of the most extensive Bronze Age metallurgical workshops in Scandinavia. The site is located in a region that has yielded comparatively few bronze artefacts, and illustrates a paradoxical trend in Norwegian Bronze Age archaeology: the dislocation between production of bronze objects and their final deposition. The Bronze Age workshops and monuments at Hunn are situated in an area with a Late Neolithic history, which after the Bronze Age continued to be used for burials and rituals. Hunn is situated by a natural harbor, and has good conditions for embarking inland on rivers and documented prehistoric tracks. Occurrences of unalloyed copper in a Bronze Age context may be considered an indication of trade in raw metals, which is also indicated by residues on crucibles at other central workshop sites in Scandinavia. Hunn was very probably, with its two workshop areas and signs of specialized production of, among other things, preforms, a regional center or aggregation site for craft production and exchange. A high degree of overlap between Nordic metalworking sites in terms of metallurgical know-how, refractory technology and artefact typology, but also symbolic decoration, is noted. This is indicative of ambulating, specialized metalworkers who had the aggregation site as their primary arena. A link to the Baltic is seen in the locally manufactured Lausitz-inspired pottery and an early cremation burial at Midtfeltet. The article focusses on the results of small-scale excavation campaigns at Midtfeltet in 1996-2006, covering an area of altogether c. 400 m2. This article presents a comparative analysis of copper beads of the Cortaillod culture. The famous deposit from the site of Seeberg Burgäschisee-Süd remained isolated for a long time, and hence the hypothesis of its metrological structure seemed unbelievable to some archaeologists. This article begins with a reminder of this find and presents a new analysis based on Kendall's statistics. In addition, we present a breakthrough discovery of another deposit of beads. During excavations of the site of Colmar in Alsace, an Eneolithic grave was discovered; it produced copper beads of a type that is characteristic of the Cortaillod culture. The distribution of these objects in a grave finally removes doubts as to how beads were valued. The comparison of the deposits of Seeberg and Colmar, using both statistical and conventional methods, is at the core of this article; it allows us to gain a deeper insight into the problematic area of early mathematical and metrological concepts in prehistoric Europe. The beads lie at the interface between traditional, more archaic and less abstract methods of perceiving mathematical relations based on the concept of linear measure and the new approach brought about by the arrival of metal technology. Abstract: Im Mittelpunkt dieses Artikels stehen Vergleichsanalysen von Kupferperlen der Cortaillod-Kultur sowie einleitend das Depot von Seeberg Burgäschisee-Süd. Dieses Depot war für eine lange Zeit ein isolierter Fundkomplex, sodass vonseiten der Forschung Thesen zu dessen metrologischer Struktur als wenig überzeugend angesehen wurden. 2008 jedoch kam es zu einem Durchbruch für die Forschung, konnte doch in Colmar in einem äneolithischen Grab eine für die Cortaillod-Kultur charakteristische Perlenkette geborgen werden, deren Platzierung in der Bestattung eine Bewertung der Stellung und Bedeutung jener Perlen während des Äneolithikums erlaubte. Für die hier vorgelegten Analysen sind diese Perlen von großer Bedeutung, vergleichbar etwa mit dem 'Stein von Rosette' für die Entzifferung der Hieroglyphen, tragen sie doch dazu bei, die archaischen und wenig abstrakten Methoden mathematischen Denkens und verwendeter Zahlbegriffe zu verstehen und beides mit dem damals neuen Ansatz der Metallurgie zu verknüpfen. Résumé: L'article ci-dessous est une étude comparative de perles de cuivre appartenant à la culture de Cortaillod. Le célèbre dépôt de Seeberg Burgäschisee-Süd est resté unique pendant de longues années, ce qui amena certains archéologues à douter de la validité d'une hypothèse d'une structure métrologique. Suivant un aperçu sur cette trouvaille, notre article présente une analyse basée sur la méthode statistique de Kendall. De plus, nous disposons maintenant d'une nouvelle découverte de la plus haute importance : un autre dépôt de perles, mis à jour lors de fouilles à Colmar en Alsace. Ces perles, d'un type caractéristique de la culture de Cortaillod, furent retrouvées dans une tombe énéolithique. La répartition de ces objets dans la sépulture lève enfin le doute sur la valeur que l'on plaçait sur ces perles. L'étude comparative de ces deux dépôts, qui fait appel à des méthodes tant statistiques que conventionnelles, constitue le noyau de cet article; elle nous permet d'approfondir nos connaissances dans le domaine problématique des notions mathématiques et métrologiques existant en Europe à l'époque préhistorique. Zusammenfassung: Folgender Beitrag diskutiert die Ergebnisse von an Metallfunden der frühbronzezeitlichen Nekropole Kalınkaya-Toptaştepe in Zentralanatolien vorgenommenen Spektralanalysen. Da archäometrische Daten für Zentralanatolien im 3. Jahrtausend immer noch lückenhaft sind und bevorzugt Fundkomplexe früher Zentralorte berücksichtigt, Assemblagen aus dörflichen Ansiedlung jedoch bislang weitgehend unerschlossen sind, ist diese Studie in erster Linie als dringend benötigte Verbreiterung der Quellenbasis zu verstehen. Arsen-Kupferlegierungen bestehen neben 'echten' Bronzen (Kupfer-Zinn), Kontaminationen wie Nickel mögen Rückschlüsse auf bestimmte Lagerstätten zulassen. Die erzielten Resultate ergeben somit einen guten Einblick in Metallverwendung und Legierungstraditionen einer Kleinsiedlung in der jüngeren anatolischen Frühbronzezeit Résumé: L'article ci-dessous présente les résultats d'analyses spectroscopiques menées sur un ensemble d'objets de l'âge du Bronze Ancien provenant de la nécropole de Kalınkaya-Toptaştepe en Anatolie centrale. Vu que les données archéométriques concernant le 3e millénaire av. J.-C. en Anatolie centrale sont encore fort rares, qu'elles proviennent surtout de grands centres occupés précédemment et que les ensembles provenant d'établissements ruraux n'ont presque pas fait l'objet de recherches, l'intention primaire de l'étude que nous présentons ici est d'attirer l'attention sur les données qui sont à notre disposition. Les alliages de cuivre et d'arsenic existent à côté de 'vrais' bronzes (alliages de cuivre et d'étain), et la contamination, par exemple par le nickel, peut fournir de nombreux indices sur la présence de dépôts spécifiques. Les résultats permettent de se faire une bonne idée de l'emploi des métaux et des techniques traditionnelles d'alliage utilisés dans un habitat mineur d'Anatolie vers la fin de l'âge du Bronze Ancien. Abstract: The following contribution discusses the results of spectroscopic analyses carried out on metal artefacts from the Early Bronze Age cemetery of Kalınkaya-Toptaştepe in central Anatolia. Given that archaeometric data from 3rd- millennium BCE Central Anatolia are still quite sparse, tend to stem mainly from earlier central places, and the assemblages from village sites have so far remained largely unexplored, the study we present here is primarily intended to draw much needed attention to the data that are available. Copper-arsenic alloys exist alongside 'true' bronzes (copper-tin alloys), and contamination, for example by nickel, can yield much information about specific deposits. Abstract: In der bisherigen Forschung bestand völlige Unklarheit darüber, ab wann im nördlichen Mitteleuropa eine eigenständige Erzeugung von Eisen existierte und wie die frühe Entwicklung dieser Innovation in der Späthallstatt- und Latènezeit ausgesehen hat. Verschiedene hierfür geschaffene Modelle basierten auf einer sehr schmalen Materialbasis und konnten keine hinreichende Klärung dieser Fragen bringen. Mit einem interdisziplinär angelegten Forschungsprojekt war es nun möglich, erstmals für eine ausgewählte Region Technologie, Kapazität und Organisation der latènezeitlichen Eisenerzeugung ansatzweise zu erschließen. Für das Arbeitsgebiet desTeltow ist ab der Frühlatènezeit eine Eisenverhüttung als sicher nachgewiesen anzusehen, wobei der Stand der Entwicklung zeigt, dass die Anfänge noch weiter davor zu suchen sind. Einem aus dem Material heraus erarbeiteten Modell zufolge beruhte das System der Eisenversorgung wahrscheinlich auf der Tätigkeit mobiler Spezialisten. Abstract: Autrefois, le monde de la recherche n'avait pas de vision claire sur les débuts d'une production autonome du fer dans le Nord de l'Europe centrale ainsi que sur l'évolution précoce de cette innovation au Hallstatt final et à l'époque de La Tène. Les différents modèles utilisés à cet effet reposaient sur une très faible quantité d'objets et ne pouvaient donc répondre à ces questions de manière satisfaisante. Grâce à un projet de recherche interdisciplinaire, il fut pour la première fois possible de reconstituer partiellement les technologie, capacité et organisation de la production du fer d'une région donnée. Il est établi que des activités sidérurgiques existaient dans la région étudiée de Teltow dès La Tène ancienne, l'état de la recherche indiquant cependant que les débuts de la sidérurgie remontent encore plus loin. Le modèle développé à partir du matériel archéologique a révélé que le système d'approvisionnement en fer reposait sur la par de spécialistes itinérants. Abstract: Until now, there was no clear picture in the literature of when independent iron production began in northern Central Europe and how the innovation evolved in the Late Hallstatt and La Tène Periods. The various research models used in the past had a very narrow material basis as their foundation and were unable to adequately clarify these questions. An interdisciplinary research project has for the first time been able to answer some questions respecting the technology, capacity and organisation of La Tène iron production for a selected region. For the Teltow region, there is clear evidence of iron smelting beginning in the Early La Tène Period, although its state of development shows that it began some time earlier.
