Australia has significant offshore wind resources that can support ever-increasing power demand and hence provide a long-term contribution to the net-zero target by 2050. Although some offshore wind farm projects are proposed in Australia, the industry is not mature enough to justify the benefits and display economic opportunities. More specifically, the techno-economic analysis of offshore wind energy has not been systematically mapped in Australia. Therefore, the investigation of the spatial variation of technical feasibility and economic potential of offshore wind is vital to identify the potential regions and to develop strategies for future offshore wind farm developments in Australia. This paper presents detailed mappings of the techno-economic potential of offshore wind energy in Victoria-Tasmania's exclusive economic zone. Offshore wind energy resources are assessed in the paper in terms of energy availability and variability and the feasibility of various offshore wind technologies is investigated, including turbines, foundation types and transmission topologies. In addition, the high-fidelity life-cycle cost models and two innovative evaluation matrices are developed to assess the economic potential of offshore energy farms in South-eastern Australia. The impact of local power system regulation costs and future carbon prices on the viability of offshore wind is also investigated in this paper. It is concluded that the detailed mapping approach and analysis in the paper can provide a systematic tool for industry partners, investors and policymakers at the pre-planning stage of developing offshore renewable energy systems. • The technical feasibility of offshore wind is mapped under various constraints. • The novel LACE and high-fidelity LCC assessment models are developed. • The techno-economic potential is systemically mapped in South-eastern Australia. • The impacts of electricity market regulation and future carbon prices are studied. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a viable technique to address food waste (FW) problems by converting FW into sustainable energy. Despite the advantages of the AD process, large-scale AD plants like in Germany and the USA have not been developed in Australia. Therefore, this paper aims to study the technological, economic, and environmental feasibility of sustainable energy production from household FW in Australia. In addition, this paper discusses the different waste to energy (WtE) technologies along with the operational parameters as well as the challenges in developing a biogas plant. The energy and economic potential analysis of the AD process indicates that the processing of 10% FW from Australian states and territories can generate 1.22 GWh to 35.4 GWh electricity which can subsequently earn AUD 0.54 million to AUD 15.7 million revenue per year. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions analysis indicates that conversion of the 10% of Australian FW has the potential to lower GHG emissions by 639,852 tonnes per annum. Curtailment of distributed photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems will have significant implications for power system transition around the world. Australia offers a unique case study as it has highest installation rate of distributed-PV and growing fleet of battery energy storage systems. Distributed-PV and battery inverters in Australia are required to exhibit voltage-responsive power-quality response modes to prevent excessive voltage rise caused by increasing day-time energy exports, but these modes can curtail power output and limit the value that can be gained from the renewable energy assets. For the first time in Australia, this paper studies all three inverter power-quality response modes and develops novel algorithms to assess curtailment. The algorithms are applied to a real-world dataset of 1-sec distributed-PV and battery power measurements from 1300 residential households; therefore, data resolution is higher and sample size is larger than previous related studies. Using these datasets, the study compares the experienced curtailment between distributed-PV only sites and distributed-PV coupled with battery sites for the first time. The study investigates and quantifies the energy loss due to curtailment within the South Australia region with over 40% distributed-PV penetration which has the highest uptake in the world. The results show that average curtailment loss was 1.5% for distributed-PV only sites and 0.2% for distributed-PV coupled with battery sites, however, some sites were heavily impacted losing up to 25% of generation. The reasons for the larger curtailment loss were identified as wiring and network connection faults and high voltage set-points at households' respective local substations. Other potential reason for the heavily impacted sites is being located towards the end of the low voltage feeder, however this couldn't be verified due to lack of spatial data. The large variation in curtailed generation across sites raises concerns for system owners and suggests further inquiry into the power-quality response mode design and regulations. The study also examines inverter conformance using real-world operational data for all three power quality response modes for the first time, and the results showed a low rate of conformance according to the Australian Standards and there were various discrepancies in the execution of these modes which raises concerns considering the increasing importance of distributed-PV and battery inverter fleet in supporting network operations and security. Renewable energy sources such as wind farms and solar power plants are replacing conventional coal-based synchronous generators (SGs) to achieve net-zero carbon emissions worldwide. SGs play an important role in enhancing system strength in a power system to make it more stable during voltage/frequency disruptions. However, traditional coal-fired SGs are being decommissioned in many parts of the world, owing to stringent environmental regulations and low levelized cost of energy of renewables. Consequently, maintaining system strength in a renewable energy-dominated power system has become a major challenge, and without adequate mitigation techniques, low system strength can potentially cause widespread power outages. This paper provides an overview of system strength and its measurement techniques in a power system with a large number of renewable energy sources (RESs), for example solar and wind farms. Offshore wind and wave power are abundant energy sources and could provide long term contributions to our future energy supply. The combined exploration of wind and wave power has been proposed as an effective way to mitigate the non-negligible power intermittency and variability of offshore renewables. However, the assessments of wind and wave resources have been developed separately in Australia, and the potential of diversified wind and wave power has not been studied systematically. This study investigates offshore wind and wave energy sources in multiple locations around the Australian coastline and their potentials for integration in terms of energy availability, power variability, coherence and correlation, and annual and seasonal variability over the last seven years. In addition, wind and wave mixed energy farms are studied using commercial wind turbine models and various wave energy converter prototype models. The energy availability, power smoothing effect, capacity factor and downtime of these mixed energy farms are also discussed. Moreover, this paper proposes an effective matrix for assessing the potential of hybrid energy farms in multiple sites in terms of power availability, power variability and combination performance and the sensitivity of selecting various wave energy converter (WEC) models is also investigated to provide a general guideline for future work. The regional comparative results indicate that the swell wave dominated sites in Western and Southern Australia present merits for combining wind and wave power, while wind–wave dominated regions, such as Eastern Australia, are not preferable for this diversified system. It can be found that power variability and downtime can be significantly reduced for the specific wind–wave capacity mix if a lower correlation or longer lag time exists between the two renewables. For restructured electricity industries undergoing energy transition, designing effective and efficient frequency control arrangements is a complex and ongoing task that requires appropriate configuration of controllers, generator technical connection requirements, market arrangements and wider policy settings. In this paper, we provide an overview and assessment of these arrangements in Australia's National Electricity Market - a useful case study given its long-standing frequency control ancillary services markets, yet recent challenges in maintaining secure frequency control. We assess the performance of these evolving arrangements in delivering improved frequency control outcomes, with particular regard to growing renewable penetrations and evident tensions between mandatory requirements and market-based incentives. Based on this assessment, we draw out four key insights on designing frequency control arrangements as power system capabilities and needs change: (1) Understanding control action interactions, (2) Implementing efficient price formation and cost-allocation mechanisms, (3) Monitoring and assessing service provision to better align participant remuneration with service quality, and (4) Considering both regulatory and market mechanisms and their consequences and interactions.
