A recent study claiming that almost all Americans have access to both ophthalmologists and optometrists within an hour's drive has been criticized for its flawed research design. The study only included providers enrolled in Medicare, excluding one-third of practicing optometrists, and failed to consider other factors that affect access to care. The study also misrepresented the number of optometrists in practice, leading to an inaccurate conclusion. The researchers' assertion that ophthalmologists may yield improved outcomes compared to optometrists is not supported by evidence. A more comprehensive study is needed to accurately assess geographic eyecare access in the US. [Extracted from the article]
