The article presents the author's speech on economist Karl Polanyi and the economy as a social construct, delivered before the Association for Social Economics (ASE) World Congress, Brock University in June 2015. Topics discussed include Polanyi as economist of the social, family influences in Polanyi’s lifelong commitment to socialism; and Polanyi’s "Double Movement" of social resistance to marketization.

This paper is a shortened and revised version of the Closing Plenary given to the World Congress of the Association of Social Economics, and Cairncross Lecture, University of Glasgow, June 2012. Mainstream economics is seen as unfit for purpose because of deficiencies that have long been criticised by a marginalised heterodoxy. These include the taking out of the historical and social even if bringing them back in on the basis of a technical apparatus and architecture that is sorely inappropriate. These observations are illustrated in passing reference to social capital but are particularly appropriate for understanding the weakness of ethics within mainstream economics. An alternative is offered through taking various “entanglements” (such as facts and values) as critical point of departure, leading to the suggestion that ethical systems are subject to the 10 Cs—Constructed, Construed, Conforming, Commodified, Contextual, Contradictory, Closed, Contested, Collective and Chaotic. The article presents announcements related to the field of social economy. Ellen Mutari of Richard Stockton College is the recipient of the William R. Waters Summer Research Grant for Summer 2001. The International Confederation of Associations for Pluralism in Economics is in search for research proposals in line with its first conference on the future of heterodox economics.

The article offers information on the 1995 Fourth United Nations World Conference on Women and the Non-Governmental Organization Forum held in Beijing, China. Economics was the focus of the conference as most of the participating countries are undergoing structural adjustment or similar economic reforms. It also discussed issues on women's ownership and the control of land and housing. Furthermore, the conference had formulated a comparative analysis of the results and the responses of the participants to the economic transformation in developing countries with the individuals in the family as the main factors.

The article presents the Association for Social Economics' annual award of special recognition to the author of the best article to appear in the Review of Social Economy. The Special Recognition Award commemorates Helen Potter, a long-time member and contributor of the association. A plaque is presented to the promising author of the article at the Annual Association Awards Banquet at the Allied Science Associations Meetings. Assistant and associate professors who are members of the association is not qualified in the contest. Furthermore, the past recipients of the award is presented.

The article invites interested individuals to submit papers for the annual conference of the Society for the Advancement of Behavioral Economics to be held on June 20-22, 1997 at Washington and Lee University, in Lexington, Virginia. The conference's theme will be "Mind and Matters: An Interdisciplinary Exploration." Organizers are encouraging a broad range of papers that incorporate and integrate economics with behavioral disciplines, such as psychology, organizational behavior, sociology, anthropology.

The article presents information on the 8th International Conference on Socio-Economics to be held at Université de Genè ve in Switzerland, during July 12-14, 1996. The topics to be discussed at the representative session are socio-economics and the world economy, public policy issues, transition to capitalism and democracy, embededness of institutions, role of culture and psychology in the economy and unemployment.
