The tailings pond is a dangerous source of man-made debris flow with high potential energy. The oxidative acidification of tailings may cause the instability of the pond and induce serious safety accidents. The influence of oxidation and acidification degree on macro mechanical properties of tailings is discussed from the aspects of mineral composition and microstructure. The results show that as the degree of oxidation and acidification of tailings sand increases, the overall structural performance and load-bearing capacity decrease, and its cohesion (c) and internal friction angle (φ) show a decreasing trend. In fact, the engineering properties of tailings with different oxidation and acidification degrees are dominated by the physicochemical composition and structural characteristics. On the one hand, as the degree of oxidation increases, acidic substance will neutralize with CaCO 3 and CaMg(CO 3 ) 2 , resulting in the loss of cemented substance and the decrease of cementation force between tailing sand particles as well as the gradual destruction of the integrity of tailing sand. On the other hand, the increase of oxidation and acidification degree of tailing sand leads to a gradual reduction of outline (2D) fractal dimension and gray surface (3D) fractal dimension of surface laminated structure as well as the obvious reduction of laminated structure and its roughness of tailings sand., (© 2023. In this work, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine(II) (TMB 2+ ), derived from H 2 O 2 -horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (H 2 O 2 -HRP-TMB) reaction system, was used to etch AuNRs to generate different colors of solution. Many enzyme reactions are involved in the production of H 2 O 2 (e.g., glucose can react with the dissolved oxygen in the presence of glucose oxidase (GOx) to produce H 2 O 2 ). Given this information, a simple visual biosensor was developed in this study, with glucose as the example target. The detection range of the proposed system varied with the experimental conditions, such as the concentration of GOx and HRP, and enzymatic reaction time. Under the optimized conditions, the longitudinal shift of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) had a linear correlation with the glucose concentration in the range of 0.1~1.0 mM. Meanwhile, the solution displayed a specific color in response to the glucose concentration, thus enabling the visual quantitative detection of glucose at a glance. Compared with the traditional monochromic colorimetry, this multicolor glucose sensor generates various vivid colors, which can be easily distinguished by naked eyes without any sophisticated instrument. Notably, the proposed method has been successfully applied to detect glucose in serum samples with satisfied results.

Colorimetric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay utilizing 3'-3-5'-5-tetramethylbenzidine(TMB) as the chromogenic substrate has been widely used in the hospital for the detection of all kinds of disease biomarkers. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy to change this single-color display into dual-color responses to improve the accuracy of visual inspection. Our investigation firstly reveals that oxidation state of 3'-3-5'-5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB(2+)) can quantitatively etch gold nanoparticles. Therefore, the incorporation of gold nanoparticles into a commercial TMB-based ELISA kit could generate dual-color responses: the solution color varied gradually from wine red (absorption peak located at ~530 nm) to colorless, and then from colorless to yellow (absorption peak located at ~450 nm) with the increase amount of targets. These dual-color responses effectively improved the sensitivity as well as the accuracy of visual inspection. For example, the proposed dual-color plasmonic ELISA is demonstrated for the detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in human serum with a visual limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.0093 ng/mL.

The present study was (i) to prepare two types of selenium nanoparticles, namely an amorphous form of selenium quantum dots (A-SeQDs) and a crystalline form of selenium quantum dots (C-SeQDs); and (ii) to investigate the nano-bio interactions of A-SeQDs and C-SeQDs in MCF-7, HepG2, HeLa, NIH/3T3, L929 cells and BRL-3A cells. It was found that A-SeQDs could induce the mitochondria-mediated apoptosis, necrosis and death of cells, while C-SeQDs had much weaker effects. This polymorphs-dependent anti-proliferative activity of nano-selenium was scarcely reported. Further investigation demonstrated that A-SeQDs could differentially regulate 61 proteins and several pathways related to stress response, protein synthesis, cell migration and cell cycle, including "p38 MAPK Signaling", "p53 Signaling", "14-3-3-mediated Signaling", "p70S6K Signaling" and "Protein Ubiquitination Pathway". This was the first report to demonstrate the involvement of protein synthesis and post-translational modification pathways in the anti-proliferative activity associated with NMs. Compared with previously fragmentary studies, this study use a nanomics approach combining bioinformatics and proteomics to systematically investigate the nano-bio interactions of selenium nanoparticles in cancer cells.
