We report an unconventional effect of synchrotron X-ray irradiation in which Co–O bonds in thermally annealed (Y, Co)-codoped CeO2 nanocrystal samples were formed due to, instead of broken by, X-ray irradiation. Our experimental data indicate that escaping oxygen atoms from X-ray-broken Ce–O bonds may be captured by Co dopant atoms to form additional Co–O bonds. Consequently, the Co dopant atoms were pumped by X-rays from the energetically-favored thermally-stable Co-O4 square-planar structure to the metastable octahedral Co-O6 environment, practically a reversal of thermal annealing effects in (Y, Co)-codoped CeO2 nanocrystals. The band gap of doped CeO2 with Co dopant in the Co-O6 structure was previously found to be 1.61 eV higher than that with Co in the Co-O4 environment. Therefore, X-ray irradiation can work with thermal annealing in opposing directions to fine tune and optimize the band gap of the material for specific technological applications.

Polyethylene (C2H4)n was compressed to pressures between 10 and 30 GPa in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) and laser heated above 2500 K for approximately one second. This resulted in the chemical decomposition of the polymer into carbon and hydrocarbon reaction products. After quenching to ambient temperature, the decomposition products were measured in the DAC at pressures ranging from ambient to 29 GPa using a combination of x-ray diffraction (XRD) and small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). XRD identified cubic diamond and methane as the predominant product species with their pressure–volume relationships exhibiting strong correlations to the diamond and methane equations of state. Length scales associated with the diamond products, obtained from SAXS measurements, indicate the formation of nanodiamonds with a radius of gyration between 12 and 35 nm consistent with 32–90 nm diameter spherical particles. These results are in good agreement with the predicted product composition under thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium.

Spin pumping (SP) is a well-established method to generate pure spin currents allowing efficient spin injection into metals and semiconductors avoiding the problem of impedance mismatch. However, to disentangle pure spin currents from parasitic effects due to spin rectification effects (SRE) is a difficult task that is seriously hampering further developments. Here we propose a simple method that allows suppressing SRE contribution to inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) voltage signal avoiding long and tedious angle-dependent measurements. We show an experimental study in the well-known Py/Pt system by using a coplanar waveguide (CPW). Results obtained demonstrate that the sign and size of the measured transverse voltage signal depends on the width of the sample along the CPW active line. A progressive reduction of this width evidences that SRE contribution to the measured transverse voltage signal becomes negligibly small for sample width below 200 μm. We investigate the effect of bis(imino)pyridine (BIP) ligands in guiding self-assembly of semiconducting CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) into three-dimensional multi-layered shells with diameters spanning the entire mesoscopic range, from 200 nm to 2 μm. The assembly process is directed by guest–host interactions between the BIP ligands and a thermotropic liquid crystal (LC), with the latter’s phase transition driving the process. Characterization of the shell structures, through scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering, demonstrates that the average shell diameter depends on the BIP structure, and that changing one functional group in the chemical scaffold allows systematic tuning of shell sizes across the entire range. Differential scanning calorimetry confirms a relationship between shell sizes and the thermodynamic perturbation of the BIP molecules to the LC phase transition temperature, allowing analytical modeling of shell assembly energetics. This novel mechanism to controllably tune shell sizes over the entire mesoscale via one standard protocol is a significant development for research on in situ cargo/drug delivery platforms using nano-assembled structures.

Chiral magnetic insulators manifest novel phases of matter where the sense of rotation of the magnetization is associated with exotic transport phenomena. Effective control of such phases and their dynamical evolution points to the search and study of chiral fields like the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction. Here we combine experiments, numerics, and theory to study a zig-zag dipolar lattice as a model of an interface between magnetic in-plane layers with a perpendicular magnetization. The zig-zag lattice comprises two parallel sublattices of dipoles with perpendicular easy plane of rotation. The dipolar energy of the system is exactly separable into a sum of symmetric and antisymmetric long-range exchange interactions between dipoles, where the antisymmetric coupling generates a nonlocal Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya field which stabilizes winding textures with the form of chiral solitons. The Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction acts as a vector potential or gauge field of the magnetic current and gives rise to emergent magnetic and electric fields that allow the manifestation of the magnetoelectric effect in the system., Scientific Reports, 13 (1), ISSN:2045-2322

Polar Rashba-type semiconductor BiTeI doped with magnetic elements constitutes one of the most promising platforms for the future development of spintronics and quantum computing thanks to the combination of strong spin-orbit coupling and internal ferromagnetic ordering. The latter originates from magnetic impurities and is able to open an energy gap at the Kramers point (KP gap) of the Rashba bands. In the current work using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) we show that the KP gap depends non-monotonically on the doping level in case of V-doped BiTeI. We observe that the gap increases with V concentration until it reaches 3% and then starts to mitigate. Moreover, we find that the saturation magnetisation of samples under applied magnetic field studied by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer has a similar behaviour with the doping level. Theoretical analysis shows that the non-monotonic behavior can be explained by the increase of antiferromagnetic coupled atoms of magnetic impurity above a certain doping level. This leads to the reduction of the total magnetic moment in the domains and thus to the mitigation of the KP gap as observed in the experiment. These findings provide further insight in the creation of internal magnetic ordering and consequent KP gap opening in magnetically-doped Rashba-type semiconductors.

We report the effect of structural compaction on the statistics of elastic disorder in a silicate glass, using heterogeneous elasticity theory with the coherent potential approximation (HET-CPA) and a log-normal distribution of the spatial fluctuations of the shear modulus. The object of our study, a soda lime magnesia silicate glass, is compacted by hot-compression up to 2 GPa (corresponding to a permanent densification of ~ 5%). Using THz vibrational spectroscopic data and bulk mechanical properties as inputs, HET-CPA evaluates the degree of disorder in terms of the length-scale of elastic fluctuations and the non-affine part of the shear modulus. Permanent densification decreases the extent of non-affine elasticity, resulting in a more homogeneous distribution of strain energy, while also decreasing the correlation length of elastic heterogeneity. Complementary 29Si magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopic data provide a short-range rationale for the effect of compression on glass structure in terms of a narrowing of the Si–O–Si bond-angle and the Si–Si distance.

In this work, a Josephson relation is generalized to a multi-component fermion superfluid. Superfluid density is expressed through a two-particle Green function for pairing channels. When the system has only one gapless collective excitation mode, the Josephson relation is simplified, which is given in terms of the order parameters and the trace of two-particle Green functions. In the presence of inversion symmetry, the superfluid density is directly related to the inverse of pairing fluctuation matrix. The results of the superfluid density in Haldane model show that the generalized Josephson relation can be also applied into a multi-band fermion superfluid in lattice., Comment: 2 figures

[EN]A hedgehog or Bloch point is a point-like 3D magnetization configuration in a ferromagnet. Regardless of widely spread treatment of a Bloch point as a topological defect, its 3D topological charge has never been calculated. Here, applying the concepts of the emergent magnetic field and Dirac string, we calculate the 3D topological charge (Hopf index) of a Bloch point and show that due to the magnetostatic energy contribution it has a finite, non-integer value. Thus, Bloch points form a new class of hopfions-3D topological magnetization configurations. The calculated Bloch point non-zero gyrovector leads to important dynamical consequences such as the appearance of topological Hall effect. We theoretically demonstrate non-Hermitian indirect interaction between two magnetic impurities placed at the interface between a 3D topological insulator and a ferromagnetic metal. The coupling of topological insulator and the ferromagnet introduces not only Zeeman exchange field on the surface states but also broadening to transfer the charge and spin between the surface states of the topological insulator and the metallic states of the ferromagnet. While the former provides bandgap at the charge neutrality point, the latter causes non-Hermiticity. Using the Green’s function method, we calculate the range functions of magnetic impurity interactions. We show that the charge decay rate provides a coupling between evanescent modes near the bandgap and traveling modes near the band edge. However, the spin decay rate induces a stronger coupling than the charge decay rate so that higher energy traveling modes can be coupled to lower energy evanescent ones. This results in a non-monotonic behavior of the range functions in terms of distance and decay rates in the subgap regime. In the over gap regime, depending on the type of decay rate and on the distance, the amplitude of spatial oscillations would be damped or promoted.

This paper reports on the development of a magnetically driven high-velocity implosion experiment conducted on the CQ-3 facility, a compact pulsed power generator with a load current of 2.1 MA. The current generates a high Lorentz force between inner and outer liners made from 2024 aluminum. Equally positioned photonic Doppler velocimetry probes record the liner velocities. In experiment CQ3-Shot137, the inner liner imploded with a radial converging velocity of 6.57 km/s while the outer liner expanded at a much lower velocity. One-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamics simulation with proper material models provided curves of velocity versus time that agree well with the experimental measurements. Simulation then shows that the inner liner underwent a shock-less compression to approximately 19 GPa and reached an off-Hugoniot high-pressure state. According to the scaling law that the maximum loading pressure is proportional to the square of the load current amplitude, the results demonstrate that such a compact capacitor bank as CQ-3 has the potential to generate pressure as high as 100 GPa within the inner liner in such an implosion experiment. It is emphasized that the technique described in this paper can be easily replicated at low cost.

We present a subcritical fracture growth model, coupled with the elastic redistribution of the acting mechanical stress along rugous rupture fronts. We show the ability of this model to quantitatively reproduce the intermittent dynamics of cracks propagating along weak disordered interfaces. To this end, we assume that the fracture energy of such interfaces (in the sense of a critical energy release rate) follows a spatially correlated normal distribution. We compare various statistical features from the hence obtained fracture dynamics to that from cracks propagating in sintered polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) interfaces. In previous works, it has been demonstrated that such approach could reproduce the mean advance of fractures and their local front velocity distribution. Here, we go further by showing that the proposed model also quantitatively accounts for the complex self-affine scaling morphology of crack fronts and their temporal evolution, for the spatial and temporal correlations of the local velocity fields and for the avalanches size distribution of the intermittent growth dynamics. We thus provide new evidence that Arrhenius-like subcritical growth laws are particularly suitable for the description of creeping cracks., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, 5 appendices

One-dimensional and two-dimensional materials are widely used to compose the conductive network atop soft substrate to form flexible strain sensors for several wearable electronic applications. However, limited contact area and layer misplacement hinder the rapid development of flexible strain sensors based on 1D or 2D materials. To overcome these drawbacks above, we proposed a hybrid strategy by combining 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and 2D graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), and the developed strain sensor based on CNT-GNP hierarchical networks showed remarkable sensitivity and tenability. The strain sensor can be stretched in excess of 50% of its original length, showing high sensitivity (gauge factor 197 at 10% strain) and tenability (recoverable after 50% strain) due to the enhanced resistive behavior upon stretching. Moreover, the GNP-CNT hybrid thin film shows highly reproducible response for more than 1000 loading cycles, exhibiting long-term durability, which could be attributed to the GNPs conductive networks significantly strengthened by the hybridization with CNTs. Human activities such as finger bending and throat swallowing were monitored by the GNP-CNT thin film strain sensor, indicating that the stretchable sensor could lead to promising applications in wearable devices for human motion monitoring.

In multi-channel tunneling systems quantum interference effects modify tunneling conductance spectra due to Fano effect. We investigated the impact of Hubbard type Coulomb interaction on tunneling conductance spectra for the system formed by several interacting impurity atoms or quantum dots localised between the contact leads. It was shown that the Fano shape of tunneling conductance spectra strongly changes in the presence of on-site Coulomb interaction between localised electrons in the intermediate system. The main effect which determines the shape of the tunneling peaks could be not Fano interference but mostly nonequilibrium dependence of the occupation numbers on bias voltage.

Levitating nanoparticles trapped in optical potentials at low pressure open the experimental investigation of nonlinear ballistic phenomena. With engineered non-linear potentials and fast optical detection, the observation of autonomous transient mechanical effects, such as instantaneous speed and acceleration stimulated purely by initial position uncertainty, are now achievable. By using parameters of current low pressure experiments, we simulate and analyse such uncertainty-induced particle ballistics in a cubic optical potential demonstrating their evolution, faster than their standard deviations, justifying the feasibility of the experimental verification. We predict, the maxima of instantaneous speed and acceleration distributions shift alongside the potential force, while the maximum of position distribution moves opposite to it. We report that cryogenic cooling is not necessary in order to observe the transient effects, while a low uncertainty in initial particle speed is required, via cooling or post-selection, to not mask the effects. These results stimulate the discussion for both attractive stochastic thermodynamics, and extension of recently explored quantum regime.

We describe the collective behavior of isotropic droplets dispersed over a spherical smectic bubble, observed under microgravity conditions on the International Space Station (ISS). We find that droplets can form two-dimensional hexagonal structures changing with time. Our analysis indicates the possibility of spatial and temporal periodicity of such structures of droplets. Quantitative analysis of the hexagonal structure including the first three coordination circles was performed. A peculiar periodic-in-time ordering of the droplets, related to one-dimensional motion of droplets with non-uniform velocity, was found.

We have performed grazing incidence neutron small angle scattering using a fan shaped incident beam focused along one dimension. This allows significantly reduced counting times for measurements of lateral correlations parallel to an interface or in a thin film where limited depth resolution is required. We resolve the structure factor of iron inclusions in aluminium oxide and show that the ordering of silica particles deposited on a silicon substrate depends on their size. We report hexagonal packing for 50 nm but not for 200 nm silica spheres deposited by a modified Langmuir-Schaefer method on a silicon substrate. For the 200 nm particles we extract the particles shape from the form factor. Moreover, we report dense packing of the particles spread on a free water surface. We name this method π-GISANS to highlight that it differs from GISANS as it gives lateral information while averaging the in-depth structure.

Two-dimensional electron systems subjected to high transverse magnetic fields can exhibit Fractional Quantum Hall Effects (FQHE). In the GaAs/AlGaAs 2D electron system, a double degeneracy of Landau levels due to electron-spin, is removed by a small Zeeman spin splitting, gμBB, comparable to the correlation energy. Then, a change of the Zeeman splitting relative to the correlation energy can lead to a re-ordering between spin polarized, partially polarized, and unpolarized many body ground states at a constant filling factor. We show here that tuning the spin energy can produce fractionally quantized Hall effect transitions that include both a change in ν for the Rxx minimum, e.g., from ν = 11/7 to ν = 8/5, and a corresponding change in the Rxy, e.g., from Rxy/RK = (11/7)−1 to Rxy/RK = (8/5)−1, with increasing tilt angle. Further, we exhibit a striking size dependence in the tilt angle interval for the vanishing of the ν = 4/3 and ν =7/5 resistance minima, including “avoided crossing” type lineshape characteristics, and observable shifts of Rxy at the Rxx minima- the latter occurring for ν = 4/3, 7/5 and the 10/7. The results demonstrate both size dependence and the possibility, not just of competition between different spin polarized states at the same ν and Rxy, but also the tilt- or Zeeman-energy-dependent- crossover between distinct FQHE associated with different Hall resistances., Scientific Reports, 12, ISSN:2045-2322

The hardness and modulus increased withrising Pd content as well as by annealing below the glass transition temperature. Decreasing strainratesensitivity and increasing serration length are observed in nano indentation with increase in Pdcontent as well as thermal relaxation. Micro-pillar compression for alloys with different Pt/Pd ratiosvalidated the greater tendency for shear localization and brittle behavior of the Pd-rich alloys. The compression of argon is measured between 10 K and 296 K up to 20 GPa and and up to 114 GPa at 296 K in diamond anvil cells. Three samples conditioning are used: (1) single crystal sample directly compressed between the anvils, (2) powder sample directly compressed between the anvils, (3) single crystal sample compressed in a pressure medium. A partial transformation of the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase to a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure is observed above 4.2–13 GPa. Hcp phase forms through stacking faults in fcc-Ar and its amount depends on pressurizing conditions and starting fcc-Ar microstructure. The quasi-hydrostatic equation of state of the fcc phase is well described by a quasi-harmonic Mie–Grüneisen–Debye formalism, with the following 0 K parameters for Rydberg-Vinet equation: $$V_0$$ V 0 = 38.0 Å$$^3$$ 3 /at, $$K_0$$ K 0 = 2.65 GPa, $$K'_0$$ K 0 ′ = 7.423. Under the current experimental conditions, non-hydrostaticity affects measured P–V points mostly at moderate pressure ($$\le$$ ≤ 20 GPa).

Kondo effect is an interesting phenomenon in quantum many-body physics. Niobium (Nb) is a conventional superconductor important for many superconducting device applications. It was long thought that the Kondo effect cannot be observed in Nb because the magnetic moment of a magnetic impurity, e.g. iron (Fe), would have been quenched in Nb. Here we report an observation of the Kondo effect in a Nb thin film structure. We found that by co-annealing Nb films with Fe in Argon gas at above 400 $$^{\circ }$$ ∘ C for an hour, one can induce a Kondo effect in Nb. The Kondo effect is more pronounced at higher annealing temperature. The temperature dependence of the resistance suggests existence of remnant superconductivity at low temperatures even though the system never becomes superconducting. We find that the Hamann theory for the Kondo resistivity gives a satisfactory fitting to the result. The Hamann analysis gives a Kondo temperature for this Nb–Fe system at $$\sim $$ ∼ 16 K, well above the superconducting transition onset temperature 9 K of the starting Nb film, suggesting that the screening of the impurity spins is effective to allow Cooper pairs to form at low temperatures. We suggest that the mechanism by which the Fe impurities retain partially their magnetic moment is that they are located at the grain boundaries, not fully dissolved into the bcc lattice of Nb.

We theoretically report the finding of a new kind of topological phase transition between a normal insulator and a topological metal state where the closing-reopening of bandgap is accompanied by passing the Fermi level through an additional band. The resulting nontrivial topological metal phase is characterized by stable zero-energy localized edge states that exist within the full gapless bulk states. Such states living on a quasi-one-dimensional system with three sublattices per unit cell are protected by hidden inversion symmetry. While other required symmetries such as chiral, particle-hole, or full inversion symmetry are absent in the system.

In this work, the possibility to reduce transition curvature in heat-assisted magnetic recording, using a conventional write head design, by shaping the recording field to counteract the circular profile of the heat pulse is investigated. Topology optimization of the head tip is performed in order to create the desired cross-track field profile for increasing distances from the write head tip. For the topology optimization, the adjoint method is utilized to calculate the necessary gradients and a binary optimization scheme is proposed. The optimizations are performed considering linearized material parameters reducing the computational complexity and the results are compared to optimizations incorporating the full non-linear material behavior. The optimized field profiles are evaluated for their influence on the read-back process. To do so, switching probability phase diagrams are calculated and the curvature parameter, the signal to noise ratio and the channel bit density are extracted. The presented results show that while transition curvature can be reduced by shaping the cross-track profile of the write field, this alone does not consequently lead to an improvement of the read back process. Therefore, completely new head designs, considering additional parameters have to be investigated.

Magnetic properties can be manipulated to enhance certain functionalities by tuning different material processing parameters. Here, we present the controllable magnetization steps of hysteresis loops in double-perovskite single crystals of Eu2CoMnO6. Ferromagnetic order emerges below TC ≈ 122 K along the crystallographic c axis. The difficulty in altering Co2+ and Mn4+ ions naturally induces additional antiferromagnetic clusters in this system. Annealing the crystals in different gas environments modifies the mixed magnetic state, and results in the retardation (after O2-annealing) and bifurcation (after Ar-annealing) of the magnetization steps of isothermal magnetization. This remarkable variation offers an efficient approach for improving the magnetic properties of double-perovskite oxides.

Langevin dynamics simulations are utilized to study the structure of a dendritic polyelectrolyte embedded in two component mixtures comprised of conventional (small) and bulky counterions. We vary two parameters that trigger conformational properties of the dendrimer: the reduced Bjerrum length, $$\lambda _B^*$$ λ B ∗ , which controls the strength of electrostatic interactions and the number fraction of the bulky counterions, $$f_b$$ f b , which impacts on their steric repulsion. We find that the interplay between the electrostatic and the counterion excluded volume interactions affects the swelling behavior of the molecule. As compared to its neutral counterpart, for weak electrostatic couplings the charged dendrimer exists in swollen conformations whose size remains unaffected by $$f_b$$ f b . For intermediate couplings, the absorption of counterions into the pervaded volume of the dendrimer starts to influence its conformation. Here, the swelling factor exhibits a maximum which can be shifted by increasing $$f_b$$ f b . For strong electrostatic couplings the dendrimer deswells correspondingly to $$f_b$$ f b . In this regime a spatial separation of the counterions into core–shell microstructures is observed. The core of the dendrimer cage is preferentially occupied by the conventional ions, whereas its periphery contains the bulky counterions.

Spatially encoded measurements of transient optical transmissivity became a standard tool for temporal diagnostics of free-electron-laser (FEL) pulses, as well as for the arrival time measurements in X-ray pump and optical probe experiments. The modern experimental techniques can measure changes in optical coefficients with a temporal resolution better than 10 fs. This, in an ideal case, would imply a similar resolution for the temporal pulse properties and the arrival time jitter between the FEL and optical laser pulses. However, carrier transport within the material and out of its surface, as well as carrier recombination may, in addition, significantly decrease the number of carriers. This would strongly affect the transient optical properties, making the diagnostic measurement inaccurate. Below we analyze in detail the effects of those processes on the optical properties of XUV and soft X-ray irradiated Si$${_3}$$ 3 N$$_4$$ 4 , on sub-picosecond timescales. Si$${_3}$$ 3 N$$_4$$ 4 is a wide-gap insulating material widely used for FEL pulse diagnostics. Theoretical predictions are compared with the published results of two experiments at FERMI and LCLS facilities, and with our own recent measurement. The comparison indicates that three body Auger recombination strongly affects the optical response of Si$${_3}$$ 3 N$$_4$$ 4 after its collisional ionization stops. By deconvolving the contribution of Auger recombination, in future applications one could regain a high temporal resolution for the reconstruction of the FEL pulse properties measured with a Si$${_3}$$ 3 N$$_4$$ 4 -based diagnostics tool.

We have successfully fabricated high quality single crystalline La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) film in the freestanding form that can be transferred onto silicon wafer and copper mesh support. Using soft x-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy in transmission and reflection geometries, we demonstrate that the x-ray emission from Mn 3s-2p core-to-core transition (3sPFY) seen in the RIXS maps can represent the bulk-like absorption signal with minimal self-absorption effect around the Mn L3-edge. Similar measurements were also performed on a reference LSMO film grown on the SrTiO3 substrate and the agreement between measurements substantiates the claim that the bulk electronic structures can be preserved even after the freestanding treatment process. The 3sPFY spectrum obtained from analyzing the RIXS maps offers a powerful way to probe the bulk electronic structures in thin films and heterostructures when recording the XAS spectra in the transmission mode is not available.

We theoretically determine the magnetic exchange interaction between two ferromagnets coupled by a superconductor using a tight-binding lattice model. The main purpose of this study is to determine how the self-consistently determined superconducting state influences the exchange interaction and the preferred ground-state of the system, including the role of impurity scattering. We find that the superconducting state eliminates RKKY-like oscillations for a sufficiently large superconducting gap, making the anti-parallel orientation the ground state of the system. Interestingly, the superconducting gap is larger in the parallel configuration than in the anti-parallel configuration, giving a larger superconducting condensation energy, even when the preferred ground state is anti-parallel. We also show that increasing the impurity concentration in the superconductor causes the exchange interaction to decrease, likely due to an increasing localization of the mediating quasiparticles in the superconductor.

The Kondo effect has been a topic of intense study because of its significant contribution to the development of theories and understanding of strongly correlated electron systems. In this work, we show that the Kondo effect is at work in La1−xPrxNiO3−δ (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6) thin films. At low temperatures, the local magnetic moments of the 3d eg electrons in Ni2+, which form because of oxygen vacancies, interact strongly with itinerant electrons, giving rise to an upturn in resistivity with x ≥ 0.2. Observation of negative magnetoresistance, described by the Khosla and Fisher model, further supports the Kondo picture. This case represents a rare example of the Kondo effect, where Ni2+ acts as an impurity in the background of Ni3+. We suggest that when Ni2+ does not participate in the regular lattice, it provides the local magnetic moments needed to scatter the conduction electrons in the Kondo effect. These results offer insights into emergent transport behaviors in metallic nickelates with mixed Ni3+ and Ni2+ ions, as well as structural disorder.

The aim of this paper is to give an experimental evidence that point defects (most probably gallium vacancies) induce decomposition of InGaN quantum wells (QWs) at high temperatures. In the experiment performed, we implanted GaN:Si/sapphire substrates with helium ions in order to introduce a high density of point defects. Then, we grew InGaN QWs on such substrates at temperature of 730 °C, what caused elimination of most (but not all) of the implantation-induced point defects expanding the crystal lattice. The InGaN QWs were almost identical to those grown on unimplanted GaN substrates. In the next step of the experiment, we annealed samples grown on unimplanted and implanted GaN at temperatures of 900 °C, 920 °C and 940 °C for half an hour. The samples were examined using Photoluminescence, X-ray Diffraction and Transmission Electron Microscopy. We found out that the decomposition of InGaN QWs started at lower temperatures for the samples grown on the implanted GaN substrates what provides a strong experimental support that point defects play important role in InGaN decomposition at high temperatures.

First-order reversal curve diagrams, or FORC diagrams, have been studied to determine if the widths of their distributions along the interaction and coercivity axes can be related to the mean-field magnetization dependent interaction field (MDIF). Arrays of nanowires with diameters ranging from 18 up to 100 nm and packing fractions varying from 0.4 to 12% have been analyzed. The mean-field MDIF has been measured using the remanence curves and used as a measuring scale on the FORC diagrams. Based on these measurements, the full width of the interaction field distribution and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the FORC distribution profile along the interaction field direction are shown to be proportional to the MDIF, and the relation between them is found. Moreover, by interpreting the full width of the coercive field distribution in terms of the dipolar induced shearing, a simple relation is found between the width of this distribution and the MDIF. Furthermore, we show that the width of the FORC distribution along the coercive field axis is equal to the width of the switching field distribution obtained by the derivation of the DC remanence curve. This was further verified with the switching field distribution determined using in-field magnetic force microscopy (MFM) for very low density nanowires. The results are further supported by the good agreement found between the experiments and the values calculated using the mean-field model, which provides analytical expressions for both FORC distributions.

We report on optical spectroscopic study of the Sr3(Ir1-xRux)2O7 system over a wide doping regime. We find that the changes in the electronic structure occur in the limited range of the concentration of Ru ions where the insulator–metal transition occurs. In the insulating regime, the electronic structure associated with the effective total angular momentum Jeff = 1/2 Mott state remains robust against Ru doping, indicating the localization of the doped holes. Upon entering the metallic regime, the Mott gap collapses and the Drude-like peak with strange metallic character appears. The evolution of the electronic structure registered in the optical data can be explained in terms of a percolative insulator–metal transition. The phonon spectra display anomalous doping evolution of the lineshapes. While the phonon modes of the compounds deep in the insulating and metallic regimes are almost symmetric, those of the semiconducting compound with x = 0.34 in close proximity to the doping-driven insulator–metal transition show a pronounced asymmetry. The temperature evolution of the phonon modes of the x = 0.34 compound reveals the asymmetry is enhanced in the antiferromagnetic state. We discuss roles of the S = 1 spins of the Ru ions and charge excitations for the conspicuous lineshape asymmetry of the x = 0.34 compound.

We report on the observation of non-metallic electrical conduction, resistive switching, and a negative temperature coefficient of resistance in cluster-assembled nanostructured gold films above the electrical percolation and in strong-coupling regime, from room to cryogenic temperatures (24K). The structure of the films is characterized by an extremely high density of randomly oriented crystalline nanodomains, separated by grain boundaries. The observed behavior can be explained by considering space charge limited conduction and Coulomb blockade phenomena highlighting the influence of the high density of defects and grain boundaries on the localization of conduction electrons. Within the framework of the generalized time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, we studied the influence of the magnetic self-field induced by the currents inside a superconducting sample driven by an applied transport current. The numerical simulations of the resistive state of the system show that neither material inhomogeneity nor a normal contact smaller than the sample width are required to produce an inhomogeneous current distribution inside the sample, which leads to the emergence of a kinematic vortex-antivortex pair (vortex street) solution. Further, we discuss the behaviors of the kinematic vortex velocity, the annihilation rates of the supercurrent, and the superconducting order parameters alongside the vortex street solution. We prove that these two latter points explain the characteristics of the resistive state of the system. They are the fundamental basis to describe the peak of the current-resistance characteristic curve and the location where the vortex-antivortex pair is formed., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. Gold is a noble metal typically stable as a solid in a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure under ambient conditions; however, under particular circumstances aberrant allotropes have been synthesized. In this work, we document the phase transformation of 25 nm thick nanocrystalline (NC) free-standing gold thin-film via in situ ion irradiation studied using atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Utilizing precession electron diffraction (PED) techniques, crystallographic orientation and the radiation-induced relative strains were measured and furthermore used to determine that a combination of surface and radiation-induced strains lead to an FCC to hexagonal close packed (HCP) crystallographic phase transformation upon a 10 dpa radiation dose of Au4+ ions. Contrary to previous studies, HCP phase in nanostructures of gold was stabilized and did not transform back to FCC due to a combination of size effects and defects imparted by damage cascades.

Immiscible semiconductors are of premier importance since the source of lighting has been replaced by white light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) composed of thermodynamically immiscible InxGa1−xN blue LEDs and yellow phosphors. For realizing versatile deep-ultraviolet to near-infrared light-emitters, Al1−xInxN alloys are one of the desirable candidates. Here we exemplify the appearance and self-formation sequence of compositional superlattices in compressively strained m-plane Al1−xInxN films. On each terrace of atomically-flat m-plane GaN, In- and Al-species diffuse toward a monolayer (ML) step edge, and the first and second uppermost $$\stackrel{-}{1}\stackrel{-}{1}20$$ 1 - 1 - 20 > cation-rows are preferentially occupied by Al and In atoms, respectively, because the configuration of one In-N and two Al-N bonds is more stable than that of one Al-N and two In-N bonds. Subsequent coverage by next $$\stackrel{-}{1}\stackrel{-}{1}20$$ 1 - 1 - 20 > Al-row buries the $$\stackrel{-}{1}\stackrel{-}{1}20$$ 1 - 1 - 20 > In-row, producing nearly Al0.5In0.5N cation-stripe ordering along [0001]-axis on GaN. At the second Al0.72In0.28N layer, this ordinality suddenly lessens but In-rich and In-poor $$\stackrel{-}{1}\stackrel{-}{1}20$$ 1 - 1 - 20 >-rows are alternately formed, which grow into respective {0001}-planes. Simultaneously, approximately 5-nm-period Al0.70In0.30N/Al0.74In0.26N ordering is formed to mitigate the lattice mismatch along [0001], which grow into approximately 5-nm-period Al0.70In0.30N/Al0.74In0.26N {$$10\stackrel{-}{1}2$$ 10 1 - 2 } superlattices as step-flow growth progresses. Spatially resolved cathodoluminescence spectra identify the emissions from particular structures.

In situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and complementary first-principles calculations have revealed that structural and spectroscopic properties of lithium amidoborane compound are largely determined by multiple heteropolar dihydrogen bonds. The crystal structure of the compound is stabilized by dimeric complexes, wherein molecular ions bind together by intermolecular dihydrogen bonds of unconventional type. This strong intermolecular coupling determines stable character of the crystal structure in the pressure range up to ~ 30 GPa and is spectroscopically manifested by pronounced changes related to molecular vibrations of the amino group: the splitting of stretching modes, the anomalous behavior of wagging modes as well as Fermi resonance due to vibrational coupling of bending and stretching modes, significantly enhanced above 10 GPa. Unconventional nature of dihydrogen bonds is confirmed by the frequency increase, blueshift, of NH stretching modes with pressure. A role of certain hydrogen mediated interactions in the process of dehydrogenation of ammonia borane and its alkali metal derivatives is speculated. Findings presented here call for reconsideration of hydrogen release mechanism from alkali metal ammonia borane derivatives. The work makes significant contribution towards establishing the general theory of ubiquitous and versatile hydrogen mediated interactions.

Non-Fermi-liquid (NFL), a significant deviation from Fermi-liquid theory, usually emerges near an order-disorder phase transition at absolute zero. Recently, a diverging susceptibility toward zero temperature was observed in a quasicrystal (QC). Since an electronic long-range ordering is normally absent in QCs, this anomalous behaviour should be a new type of NFL. Here we study high-resolution partial-fluorescence-yield x-ray absorption spectroscopy on Yb-based intermediate-valence icosahedral QCs and cubic approximant crystals (ACs), some of which are new materials, to unveil the mechanism of the NFL. We find that for both forms of QCs and ACs, there is a critical lattice parameter where Yb-valence and magnetism concomitantly exhibit singularities, suggesting a critical-valence-fluctuation-induced NFL. The present result provides an intriguing structure–property relationship of matter; size of a Tsai-type cluster (that is a common local structure to both forms) tunes the NFL whereas translational symmetry (that is present in ACs but absent in QCs) determines the nature of the NFL against the external/chemical pressure.

For understanding magnonic materials the fundamental characterization of their frequency response is essential. However, determining full dispersion relations and real space wavelength measurements are challenging and time-consuming tasks. We present an approach for spin wave excitation by a modified Sinc pulse, which combines a cosine signal with a conventional Sinc function. The resulting adjustable frequency bands lead to a broadband spin wave excitation at uniform power levels. Subsequently, time resolved scanning transmission X-ray microscopy is used for direct imaging of all excited spin waves in real space. To demonstrate the capabilities of this approach, a modified Sinc excitation of an ultra-thin yttrium-iron-garnet film is shown that simultaneously reveals phase, amplitude, and k-space information from a single measurement. Consequently, this approach allows a fast and thorough access to the full dispersion relation including spatial maps of the individual spin wave modes, enabling complete characterization of magnonic materials down to the nanoscale in real and reciprocal space.

Random field induced spontaneous excess moments appear in field cooled single crystals of diluted Ising antiferromagnets. Here we report results from low temperature measurements of field cooled (including zero field) magnetic hysteresis loops parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis of a single crystal of composition Fe0.6Zn0.4F2. We find that weak static ferromagnetic excess moments attained on field cooling give rise to an apparent exchange bias of the magnetic hysteresis loops, whose magnitude is controlled by temperature and the strength and direction of the cooling field. Random field induced temporal excess moments only become observable in cooling fields larger than 1 T applied along the c-axis direction of the Fe0.6Zn0.4F2 single crystal.

Understanding of how particles and light interact in a liquid environment is vital for optical and biological applications. MoS2 has been shown to enhance nonlinear optical phenomena due to the presence of a direct excitonic resonance. Its use in biological applications is predicated on knowledge of how MoS2 interacts with ultrafast (2 nanoparticles suspended in liquid is studied. We found that the laser pulses induce bubble formation on the surface of a nanoparticle and a nanoparticle aggregate then forms on the surface of the trapped bubble. The processes of formation of the bubble and the nanoparticle aggregation are intertwined.

To explore the further possibilities of nanometer-thick ferromagnetic films (ultrathin ferromagnetic films), we investigated the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) of 1 nm-thick Co film. Whilst an FMR signal was not observed for the Co film grown on a SiO2 substrate, the insertion of a 3 nm-thick amorphous Ta buffer layer beneath the Co enabled the detection of a salient FMR signal, which was attributed to the smooth surface of the amorphous Ta. This result implies the excitation of FMR in an ultrathin ferromagnetic film, which can pave the way to controlling magnons in ultrathin ferromagnetic films.

Temperature (T = 40 ~ 300 K) dependence of Hall-effect analysis on the dual Si-δ-doped AlGaAs/InGaAs/AlGaAs quantum-well (QW) structures with various space layer thicknesses (tS = 5, 10 and 15 nm) was performed. An interesting hysteresis behavior of electron sheet concentration [n2D(T)] was observed for tS = 10 and 15 nm but not for tS = 5 nm. A model involving two different activation barriers encountered respectively by electrons in the active QW and by electrons in the δ-doped layers is proposed to account for the hysteresis behavior. However, for small enough tS (= 5 nm ≤ 2.5 s, where s = 2.0 nm is the standard deviation of the Gaussian fit to the Si-δ-doped profile), the distribution of Si dopants near active QW acted as a specific form of “modulation doping” and can not be regarded as an ideal δ-doping. These Si dopants nearby the active QW effectively increase the magnitude of n2D, and hence no hysteresis curve was observed. Finally, effects from tS on the T-dependence of electron mobility in active QW channel are also discussed.

By using a facile hydrothermal method, we synthesized Ni1−xMnxFe2O4 nanoparticles as supercapacitor electrode materials and studied how the incremental substitution of Ni with Mn would affect their structural, electronic, and electrochemical properties. X-ray diffractometry confirmed the single-phase spinel structure of the nanoparticles. Raman spectroscopy showed the conversion of the inverse structure of NiFe2O4 to the almost normal structure of MnFe2O4. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy showed the spherical shape of the obtained nanoparticles with a size in the range of 20–30 nm. Optical bandgaps were found to decrease as the content of Mn increased. Electrochemical characterizations of the samples indicated the excellent performance and the desirable cycling stability of the prepared nanoparticles for supercapacitors. In particular, the specific capacitance of the prepared Ni1−xMnxFe2O4 nanoparticles was found to increase as the content of Mn increased, reaching the highest specific capacitance of 1,221 F/g for MnFe2O4 nanoparticles at the current density of 0.5 A/g with the corresponding power density of 473.96 W/kg and the energy density of 88.16 Wh/kg. We also demonstrated the real-world application of the prepared MnFe2O4 nanoparticles. We performed also a DFT study to verify the changes in the geometrical and electronic properties that could affect the electrochemical performance.

The prediction of non-trivial topological electronic states hosted by half-Heusler compounds makes them prime candidates for discovering new physics and devices as they harbor a variety of electronic ground states including superconductivity, magnetism, and heavy fermion behavior. Here we report normal state electronic properties of a superconducting half-Heusler compound YPtBi using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our data reveal the presence of a Dirac state at the zone center of the Brillouin zone at 500 meV below the chemical potential. We observe the presence of multiple Fermi surface pockets including two concentric hexagonal and six half oval shaped pockets at the gamma and K points of the Brillouin zone, respectively. Furthermore, our measurements show Rashba-split bands and multiple surface states crossing the chemical potential which are supported by the first-principles calculations. Our finding of a Dirac state in YPtBi plays a significant role in establishing half-Heusler compounds as a new potential platform for novel topological phases and explore their connection with superconductivity., 6 pages, 4 figures

Lattice distortions (LD) in 4H-silicon carbide (SiC) wafers were quantified using synchrotron X-ray rocking curve mapping (RCM), and were resolved into their two components of lattice strain (Δd/d) and lattice plane curvature (LPC) for 150 mm diameter wafers. The evolution of these LDs were investigated for three sequential substrates from the same boule, one of which was the substrate reference, and the other two had a 10 µm thick, 1 × 1017 and 4 × 1014 cm-3 n-type doped epitaxial layer. The lattice strain, Δd/d, was highest for the lowest doped wafer due to higher mismatch with the substrate wafer. After epitaxial layer growth, the LPC variation across the wafer increases by a factor of 2, irrespective of doping. The LPC maps indicate presence of a twist in the lattice planes that increases after epitaxial growth. The LPC component has higher influence on wafer shape change, which can reduce device yields. The lattice strain component predominantly affects the glide of basal plane dislocations (BPDs), thereby reducing device reliability. From analysis of peak widths, it was determined that threading dislocations in the top 6 microns of the wafer increase after epitaxial layer growth.

We consider escape from a metastable state of a nonlinear oscillator driven close to triple its eigenfrequency. The oscillator can have three stable states of period-3 vibrations and a zero-amplitude state. Because of the symmetry of period-tripling, the zero-amplitude state remains stable as the driving increases. However, it becomes shallow in the sense that the rate of escape from this state exponentially increases, while the system still lacks detailed balance. We find the escape rate and show how it scales with the parameters of the oscillator and the driving. The results facilitate using nanomechanical, Josephson-junction based, and other mesoscopic vibrational systems for studying, in a well-controlled setting, the rates of rare events in systems lacking detailed balance. They also describe how fluctuations spontaneously break the time-translation symmetry of a driven oscillator.

Many complex systems, from earthquakes and financial markets to Barkhausen effect in ferromagnetic materials, respond with a noise consisting of discrete avalanche-like events with broad range of sizes and durations, separated by waiting times. Here we focus on the waiting-time statistics in magnetic systems. By investigating the Barkhausen noise in amorphous and polycrystalline ferromagnetic films having different thicknesses, we uncover the form of the waiting-time distribution in time series recorded from the irregular and irreversible motion of magnetic domain walls. Further, we address the question of if the waiting-time distribution evolves with the threshold level, as well as with the film thickness and structural character of the materials. Our results, besides informing on the temporal avalanche correlations, disclose the waiting-time statistics in magnetic systems also bring fingerprints of the universality classes of Barkhausen avalanches and a dimensional crossover in the domain wall dynamics.

In this paper, applying the density scaling idea to an associated liquid 4-methyl-2-pentanol used as an example, we identify different pressure-volume-temperature ranges within which molecular dynamics is dominated by either complex H-bonded networks most probably leading to supramolecular structures or non-specific intermolecular interactions like van der Waals forces. In this way, we show that the density scaling law for molecular dynamics near the glass transition provides a sensitive tool to detect thermodynamic regions characterized by intermolecular interactions of different type and complexity for a given material in the wide pressure-volume-temperature domain even if its typical form with constant scaling exponent is not obeyed. Moreover, we quantify the observed decoupling between dielectric and mechanical relaxations of the material in the density scaling regime. The suggested methods of analyses and their interpretations open new prospects for formulating models based on proper effective intermolecular potentials describing physicochemical phenomena near the glass transition.
