The joint effect on helping behavior pf liking and dependence on another for future rewards was examined. It was hypothesized that future dependence produces more helping behavior between people who like one another than between people who dislike one another. This hypothesis was derived from the Pruitt and Kimmel (1977) goallexpectation theory, a theory developed to interpret certain findings about cooperation in the prisoner's dilemma game. The hypothesis was supported. For people who liked one another, future dependence led to more time spent helping and a greater amount of help than no future dependence. For people who disliked one another, helping was low regardless of the extent of future dependence. In addition, the amount of help given the other increased across trials only for those subjects who were dependent on the other for later help. The Pruitt and Kimmel theory explains the low level of helping in the conditions where the other was disliked as due to a lack of trust that the other would reciprocate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both expectation-states theory and rank equilibration theory predict a "halo effect" from unequal rewards. This study used a laboratory experiment based on Berger's original design to test for performance expectations from unequal rewards. The results support the prediction: unequal rewards apparently structured corresponding inequalities in expectations and task-focused interaction. Despite the apparent pervasiveness of seniority as a basis for distributing group rewards, this variable has been relatively neglected by social scientists interested in allocation processes. Three experiments conducted in the United States and Taiwan examined the allocation of group rewards to individuals differing in seniority level, social-emotional competence, and task competence. The results demonstrated that in addition to merit--greater rewards being distributed to individuals with superior task competence and social competence--seniority level was a robust determinant of reward allocation. The results supported the proposition that seniority influences allocations in part because of the assumed covariation of seniority with competence, and revealed evidence of culture-specific values. Seniority, however, was a relatively pervasive determinant of allocation behavior among both American and Chinese allocators, regardless of recipients' social competence, task competence, and sex. This article focuses on sociologist John A. Clausen, the 1990 recipient of the Cooley-Mead Award from the Social Psychology Section of the American Sociological Association. This award is intended to recognize persons who have made substantial and lasting contributions to social psychology, particularly from a sociological perspective." John Clausen epitomizes this characterization, as the author intends to show in these brief remarks. John received his bachelor's degree in economics in 1936 and his master's in sociology in 1939. After taking some time off for World War II, he received his Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Chicago in 1949. As a student he was influenced by sociologists Leonard Cottrell and Herbert Blumer. He told the author in a letter that at the Institute for Juvenile Research at Chicago, he was strongly influenced by sociologists Clifford Shaw and Henry McKay, who had published a series of life histories of delinquents and criminals. He spent World War II in the Army Research Branch, which provided him with a wealth of experience in research design and with the excitement of doing work that really mattered.
