Many writers hold that research method is necessarily determined by theory, and it is common to suggest the relationship between functionalism and survey method in post-war US sociology as an example of this. This paper questions the extent to which that method and that theory were in reality meaningfully associated, and argues against the position that theory and method are in general invariably connected in the way suggested. Postmodernist writers question the applicability of universal narratives to contemporary societies. Through an investigation of the introduction/construction of reformation technology (IT) in the NHS, it is possible to discern processes of universalisation. The phenomena of money, needs, and time all provide universal media which orientate developments in IT. This orientation is possible in so far as these media facilitate universal communication whilst also allowing for an increase in differentiation.
Needs and time provide the possibility of investigating how universalisation proceeds as, unlike money, they are not already universal within a market economy. Needs require detaching from their traditional framework in order to facilitate universal communication, whereas time must be constructed so that objectivity and rationality are seen to prevail. Through the construction of temporal relations, money and needs can provide indeterminate futures which hold out the promise of universalised communication. It is argued that, as a consequence, investigations of the relevance of IT in health care provision must forgo the orientation towards 'funding problems'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

She completed her doctorate degree as a Rhodes Scholar, in the Department of Education Studies at the University of Oxford, in 1999. Nafsika's research interests are in the areas of education policy and governance, social science research methodology, and comparative studies. She is currently working on the area of social exclusion and changing education governance. Paul Bellaby is Reader in Sociology and Acting Director of the Institute for Public Health Research and Policy at the University of Salford. He is author of Sick From Work, Ashgate, 1999 and several papers related to risk, culture and social process in employment and other contexts. Nick Crossley is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Manchester. His research interests are in the broad areas of social theory, embodiment and social movements. His most recent books are The Social Body: Habit, Identity and Desire, and Making Sense of Social Movements.

This essay argues that the writing of postcolonial migrant authors has been critically deployed in such a way that it appears to vindicate a long standing romantic ideology of artistic detachment. In order to present an alternative account, the field of Nigerian anglophone fiction is examined here and the experiences of two aspiring authors offered as case-studies. It is argued that their experience, and the wider circumstances of Nigerian cultural production, demonstrate that postcolonial migrant writing is not an expression of‘aesthetic alienation’, but of the estrangement that Marx recognised as a subjective consequence of capitalism. This article explores different meanings of community and cultural identity, while highlighting women in the refuge movement in rural Wales. These women belong to overlapping communities: geographically located rural communities; linguistic and ethnic communities; and the gendered and occupationally based community of Welsh Women's Aid. Language is an important marker of belonging to Welsh rural communities which are under threat from an influx of non-Welsh speakers. Incoming women who are homeless as a result of domestic violence may be perceived as part of this threat. This creates a potential conflict for refuge workers, some of whom are also Welsh speakers, who represent the interests of this group of women but also belong to Welsh-speaking, rural communities. The authors explore the interrelation between these refuge workers, the various communities to which they belong, and how belonging or not belonging shapes their identities. They conclude that these women, in spite of the conflicting rights and interests of their various communities, negotiate a shared collective identity which owes something to all three.

This article focuses on men, power and caring relationships. Power is a controversial subject. In this article the authors reject the notion that power is simply a matter of the exercise of control over others. Instead, they posit the view that power is a complex phenomenon which is constantly negotiated and renegotiated between social actors. They examine this idea by looking at men working as carers and consider how power is used in caring relationships through the use of case materials. The analysis reveals that no one party to an interaction is either all powerful or all powerless. Taking this idea through into empowering practice means that carers need to create spaces in which people can exercise a greater sense of agency through their interaction with others. Power is an important part of caring relationships. However, it is not simply a matter of the carer exercising "power over" the cared-for. Rather, power becomes a fluid entity which is constantly (re)created and (re)negotiated through interaction.
