To investigate the vegetative tissues of Coleus forskohlii cultivated in Tongcheng, Hubei Province, and to provide useful information for its planting.The root, stem, leaf and enlarged rhizome of Coleus forskohlii were subject to routine paraffin section and staining with safranin and fast green FCF solution before examination by light microscopy.The secondary tissue was well developed in root, and stem showed a higher percentage of cortex and pitch, and 4 large vascular bundles. Leaf epidermis was covered by lots of trichomes, including glandular hairs, glandular scale and linear non-glandular hairs. Mesophyll tissue was poorly differentiated to palisade and spongy tissues. Enlarged rhizome was the same as normal dicotyledons plants.Enlarged rhizome, unconspicuous root tuber and poorly differentiated leaf mesophyll cells are 3 main different features of Coleus forskohlii transplanted in Tongcheng. These results provide scientific basis for formulating quality standards, further cultivation and utilization of the plant.

To establish HPLC fingerprints of the Antiarrhythmic fraction of Valeriana officinalis.Agilent C18 (250 mm x 4.6 mm, 5 microm) column was used and the acetonitrile-water was chosen as the mobile phase in a gradient mode. The column temperature was 380 degrees C and the detection wavelength was 218 nm. The detection time was 70 min, and the flow rate was 1.0 mL/ min.Fifteen characteristic peaks were indicated in HPLC fingerprints. The relative retention time and the ranges of relative areas of the common peaks were also determined.This method is simple and accurate with a good reproducibility and provides a reference standard for the quality control of Valeriana officinalis.

From Valeriana officinalis L., 4 compounds were isolated and identified by various spectral analysis and chemical conversion, as valerenic acid, beta-sitosterol, ursolic acid, 4, 4', 8, 8'-tetrahydroxy-3, 3'-dimethoxyl-dibenzyl-ditetrahydrofuran and caryophyllene acide,valerane, naphthalene, linoleic acid, ethyl ester, myrtenyl acetate were identified by GC-MS. Ursolic acid and 4, 4', 8, 8'-tetrahydroxy-3, 3'-dimethoxyl-dibenzyl-ditetrahydrofuran were discovered in this plant for the first time.

To establish HPLC-ELSD fingerprint of Coleus forskohlii.Chromatographic fingerprint of Coleus forskohlii was investigated by HPLC-ELSD and gradient elution mode was applied to chromatographic separation.The HPLC-ELSD fingerprint of Coleus forskohlii was established preliminarily.HPLC-ELSD fingerprint method is repeated and can be used in quality control of Coleus forskohlii. The active constituent in Coleus forskohlii is probably at equal pace between introduced in Tongcheng and provenance.

To compare HPLC fingerprint of flavonoids in fruits of Polygonnm orientale from different regions.Diamonsil C18 (250 mm x 4.6 mm, 5 microm) had been used, the mobile phase consisted of methanol and 0.2% phosphoric acid as fradient eluent. The flow rate was 1 ml/min, and the detection wavelength was 310 nm.The finerprint of flaxonoids in fruits of Poligonum orientale with 11 common peaks was eatablished. The realative retention time and the range of relative area of the common peaks were determined.The established fingerprint can be used for the identification and quality control of flavonoids of Poligonum orientale from different regions.

To establish a method of HPLC-fingerprint spectrum (HPLC-FPS) for the active part in Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (SZS) in order to control the quality of SZS from different places.The gradient elution mode was applied in chromatographic separation, and data were analysed by" Similarity Evaluation software" to compare the HPLC-FPS of SZS from different places.The conditions for HPLC analysis of SZS were established and the FPS of samples from different habitats showed some differences.All components in the spectrum were separated well and the HPLC fingerprint method is repeatable. The method can be used in quality assessment of SZS.
