Among the most promising applications provided by interactive Digital Television Systems (iDTV) are the ones that enable TV-Sets to work as the central processing unit of a house. This is supported by the extending of iDTV common functionalities making use of its processing power not only to deal with image and audio but also to execute interactive software applications. This paper proposes a new infrastructure that allows the exchange of data from the iDTV to Home Automation devices, such as sensors, mobile devices, and so on. The integration process among the involved technologies as well as each element in the proposed infrastructure is described in details. This model is supported by Open Services Gateway initiative (OSGi), as a framework for networked devices, and the Brazilian reference middleware, Ginga. Thus it is possible to use devices services in OSGi-based Home Networks, through the Digital TV. in order to prove the model functionalities, we created validating scenarios of service management involving iDTV interaction with mobile phones and electronic sensor devices using WiFi and Bluetooth technologies. The article focuses on the wireless communication services in Brazil. It was 1990 when the wireless experience in the country started. Cellular services were first deployed in Rio de Janeiro and Brasília. The national regulator of telecommunications services in the country is the agency, called the National Telecommunications Agency. Also noted is the official document of the Brazilian Ministry of Communications describing the Upgrading and Expansion Program for the Postal and Telecommunications System (PASTE), published in 1995.

The upcoming terrestrial digital television technology brings a new class of services to traditional TV sets. A set-top box may, for example, access the Internet and send email. The interactive return channel makes these new services possible. This channel allows TV viewers to interact by sending data back to the TV broadcaster. In this article we analyze the viability of a wireless ad hoc network to implement the return channel. For this purpose, an ad hoc network is a low-cost and flexible solution. We evaluate the performance of an ad hoc return channel using the IEEE 802.11 wireless technology for different Brazilian geographical scenarios. The results show that ad hoc networking is a promising solution for the return channel of Brazilian interactive digital TV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
