Moslae Herba (MH) can be used for both medicine and food and has a long history of medicine. MH has the effects of sweating and relieving the exterior, removing dampness and harmonizing, and is mainly used for colds caused by damp heat in summer. It is called "Xiayue Zhi Mahuang" in China. So far, 123 chemical compounds have been isolated and identified from MH, including flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolic acids, phenylpropanoids, and other chemical compounds. Its chemical components have a wide range of pharmacological activities, including antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic sedation, antipyretic, immune regulation, insecticidal, and other effects. In addition, because of its aromatic odor and health care function, MH also has development and utilization value in food, chemical, and other fields. This paper reviewed the research progress of MH in botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacology and provided a possible direction for further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnesium is an essential nutrient required to maintain brain health throughout life, and adequate magnesium intake is positively associated with cognitive performance in older adults. However, sex differences in magnesium metabolism have not been adequately assessed in humans. We investigated sex differences in the effect of dietary magnesium intake and the risk of different types of cognitive impairment in older Chinese adults. We collected and assessed dietary data and cognitive function status in people aged 55 years and older in northern China who participated in the Community Cohort Study of Nervous System Diseases from 2018 to 2019 to explore the relationship between dietary magnesium intake and the risk of each type of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in sex-specific cohorts of older adults. The study included 612 people: 260 (42.5%) men and 352 (57.5%) women. Logistic regression results showed that for the total sample and women's sample, high dietary magnesium intake reduced the risk of amnestic MCI (ORtotal = 0.300; ORwomen = 0.190) and multidomain amnestic MCI (ORtotal = 0.225; ORwomen = 0.145). The results of restricted cubic spline analysis showed that the risk of amnestic MCI (ptotal = 0.0193; pwomen = 0.0351) and multidomain amnestic MCI (ptotal = 0.0089; pwomen = 0.0096) in the total sample and women's sample gradually decreased with increasing dietary magnesium intake. This study first constructs an evaluation index system based on the pressure state response model, and assigns weights through entropy method and coefficient of variation method, providing theoretical and methodological support for comprehensive measurement and evaluation. Second, the least squares decision model is introduced and the PVAR model is used to analyze the development level of China's marine economy, ecology, and technological and financial innovation. The results indicated that from 2012 to 2022, the marine economic development level, marine ecological development level, and marine technology and financial innovation development level of 9 coastal provinces in China all showed a certain growth trend. However, in terms of the level of marine ecological development, various provinces had shown a downward trend, with Hebei performing the best, with an average of 0.230. Although various regions have achieved significant development in marine economy, ecology, and technological and financial innovation, the level of development varies among regions, and some regions have relatively low levels of technological innovation. Objective: To further comprehend the phenotype of multiple mitochondrial dysfunction syndrome type 3 (MMDS3:OMIM#615330) caused by IBA57 mutation. We present a case involving a patient who experienced acute neurological regression, and the literature was reviewed. Methods: Clinical data and laboratory test results were collected; early language and development progress were tested; and genetic testing was performed. Bioinformatics analysis was performed using Mutation Taster and PolyPhen‐2, and the literature in databases such as PubMed and CNKI was searched using MMDS3 and IBA57 as keywords. Results: The child, aged 1 year and 2 months, had motor decline, unable to sit alone, limited right arm movement, hypotonia, hyperreflexia of both knees, and Babinski sign positivity on the right side, accompanied by nystagmus. Blood lactate levels were elevated at 2.50 mmol/L. Brain MR indicated slight swelling in the bilateral frontoparietal and occipital white matter areas and the corpus callosum, with extensive abnormal signals on T1 and T2 images, along with the semioval center and occipital lobes bilaterally. The multiple abnormal signals in the brain suggested metabolic leukoencephalopathy. Whole‐exome sequencing analysis revealed that the child had two heterozygous mutations in the IBA57 gene, c.286T>C (p.Y96H) (likely pathogenic, LP) and c.992T>A (p.L331Q) (variant of uncertain significance, VUS). As of March 2023, a literature search showed that 56 cases of MMDS3 caused by IBA57 mutation had been reported worldwide, with 35 cases reported in China. Among the 35 IBA57 mutations listed in the HGMD database, there were 28 missense or nonsense mutations, 2 splicing mutations, 2 small deletions, and 3 small insertions. Conclusion: MMDS3 predominantly manifests in infancy, with primary symptoms including feeding difficulties, neurological functional regression, muscle weakness, with severe cases potentially leading to mortality. Diagnosis is supported by elevated lactate levels, multisystem impairment (including auditory and visual systems), and distinctive MRI findings. Whole‐exome sequencing is crucial for diagnosis. • Quantifying ecosystem service changes on the Northern Slope of the Tianshan Mountains. • Spatial heterogeneity of land use transformation and ecosystem services is revealed. • Anthropogenic land use transformation led to severe degradation of ecosystem services. • Active promoting vegetation restoration is crucial for enhancing ecosystem services. Land utilization transformation (LUT) is a key factor affecting ecosystem services (ESs). The urban agglomeration on the Northern Slope of the Tianshan Mountains (UATM) is located in a typical arid region with extremely fragile ecological environment. However, the impact of LUT on the spatial pattern of ESs in the region over the past 20 years is not clear. This study aimed to explore LUT characteristics of the urban agglomeration on the UATM using a land transfer matrix, information entropy, land utilization intensity, and land utilization dynamic degree. Various ESs indexes were quantitatively measured using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model, and the effect of LUT on ESs was revealed through a geographic detector and spatial auto-correlation analyses. The results of this study led to the following conclusions: First, between 2000 and 2020, the primary land utilization types in UATM were arable land, grassland, and bare land, with significant cross-transformations occurring among these types. Meanwhile, LUT showed marked differences among different regions. LUT changed rapidly and significantly in the central region; in contrast, slower and slight changes were observed in the northern and southern regions. Second, during the research period, habitat maintenance, water yield and carbon sequestration decreased, and the soil retention function increased. The accelerated urban development in the second decade led to more rapid changes in ESs. Finally, both the structure and intensity of land utilization showed the strongest explanatory capability for changes in ESs. Different dimensions of LUT showed significant interactions with ESs. Therefore, it is advisable to guide LUT scientifically, promote vegetation restoration projects, alleviate the impacts of human activities and climate change on ESs, and enhance the ecological safety and environmental sustainability of UATM and even arid regions in Central Asia. Objectives: As one of the most common hereditary diseases, thalassemia affects a large number of people in China. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of a method based on next-generation sequencing (NGS) for screening of thalassemia carriers among high school students in the Shaoguan area. Materials and Methods: The NGS-based method was performed using 25,910 high school students recruited from 38 schools. The screening yield was systematically analyzed. Before screening, a lecture on how the disease is inherited, the symptoms of thalassemia, and how to prevent it was given to 28,780 students. Results: Implying successful delivery of information on the disease, 90.03% (25,910 of 28,780) of the students agreed to join this program for thalassemia screening. A thalassemia carrier rate of 15.99% (4144 of 25,910) was found. Also, 69 rare genotypes (28 of α-thalassemia and 41 of β-thalassemia) and 9 novel variants were identified. Conclusions: This NGS-based method provided a feasible platform for high school population thalassemia screening. Ulva prolifera is the causative species of the annually occurring large-scale green tides in China since 2007. Its specific biological features on reproductivity strategies, as well as intra-species genetic diversity, are still largely unknown, especially at the genome level, despite their importance in understanding the formation and outbreak of massive green tides. In the present study, the restriction site-associated DNA genotyping approach (2b-RAD) was adopted to identify the genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 54 individual thalli including samples collected from Subei Shoal in 2019 and Qingdao coast from 2019 to 2021. SNPs genotype results revealed that most of the thalli in 2019 and 2020 were haploid gametophytes, while only half of the thalli were gametophytes in 2021, indicating flexibility in the reproductive strategies for the formation of the green tides among different years and the dominance of asexual and vegetative reproductive mode for the floating period. Besides, population analysis was conducted and revealed a very low genetic diversity among samples from Subei Shoal and the Qingdao coast in the same year and a higher divergence among samples in different years. The results showed the efficiency of 2b-RAD in the exploration of SNPs in U. prolifera and provided the first genome-wide scale evidence for the origin of the large-scale green tides on the Qingdao coast. This study improved our understanding of the reproductive strategy and genetic diversity of the green tide causative species and will help in further revealing the biological causes of the green tide in China. The dissection of the genetic architecture and the detection of the loci for adaptive traits are important for marker-assisted selection (MAS) for breeding. A spring wheat diversity panel with 251 cultivars, mainly from China, was obtained to conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to detect the new loci, including the heading date (HD), maturating date (MD), plant height (PH), and lodging resistance (LR). In total, 41 loci existing in all 21 chromosomes, except for 4A and 6B, were identified, and each explained 4.3–18.9% of the phenotypic variations existing in two or more environments. Of these, 13 loci are overlapped with the known genes or quantitative trait loci (QTLs), whereas the other 28 are likely to be novel. The 1A locus (296.9–297.7 Mb) is a multi-effect locus for LR and PH, whereas the locus on chromosome 6D (464.5–471.0 Mb) affects both the HD and MD. Furthermore, four candidate genes for adaptive traits were identified, involved in cell division, signal transduction, and plant development. Additionally, two competitive, allele-specific PCR (KASP) markers, Kasp_2D_PH for PH and Kasp_6D_HD for HD, were developed and validated in another 162 spring wheat accessions. Our study uncovered the genetic basis of adaptive traits and provided the associated SNPs and varieties with more favorable alleles for wheat MAS breeding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Co-abatement strategies that can reduce both CO 2 and air pollutants emissions are essential for the green and low-carbon transition of China's iron and steel industry. Most previous studies analyzed CO 2 and air pollutants reduction policies independently, but the synergies and tradeoffs between the two types of policies have rarely been investigated. By establishing a bottom-up simulation model that considers combinations of different policy objectives, crude steel demand and technology development options, this study couples air pollutants reduction into the carbon neutrality pathways to evaluate the synergistic effects of different abatement strategies in China's iron and steel industry. The study also incorporates the indirect CO 2 and air pollutants emissions from the upstream energy production sectors into pathway analysis, in order to avoid cross-sectoral carbon and air pollution leakages. The results show that the current emissions reduction policies in the iron and steel industry are far from achieving the carbon neutrality goals. To achieve synergistic reduction in CO 2 and air pollutants emissions, the short term policies should mainly rely on increasing the share of the scrap-electric arc furnace (EAF), while reducing crude steel demand and promoting breakthrough technologies, particularly hydrogen-based direct reduction, should play a major role in the long term. Meanwhile, China should promote the decarbonization of power generation and hydrogen production to reduce indirect CO 2 and air pollutants emissions from the upstream sectors. The consequences of relying on solid fuels are disproportionately borne by minorities, the marginalized, and rural communities. However, the social disparities in transitioning from polluting energy to clean energy are not well understood. We track changes in the main energy source used for cooking among Chinese households between 2010 and 2018. We find that the proportion of households who rely on clean energy increased from 53.7% in 2010 to 80.1% in 2018. We detect substantial disparities in clean energy use between rural and urban areas, across regions, and between ethnic minorities and the Han majority. Urban status, regional variations, and household characteristics entirely accounted for the observed ethnic differences in clean energy use. Over time, disparities across rural–urban, regional, and ethnic boundaries declined, and household characteristics became irrelevant to the ethnic differences. Therefore, China's efforts to mitigate the imbalance in socioeconomic development also reduced ethnic inequalities in clean energy use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Viscum coloratum (Kom.) Nakai has been traditionally used in China for nearly a thousand years to treat rheumatic diseases. However, its efficacy and mechanisms in treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have not been demonstrated. To investigate the anti-arthritic effects and molecular mechanisms of Viscum coloratum (Kom.) Nakai on collagen-induced arthritic mice through network pharmacology technology and experimental validation. First, the main ingredients of the extract of Viscum coloratum (Kom.) Nakai (EVC) were identified through chemical composition characterization using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS). Then, the collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model was established in DBA/1 J mice and the ameliorative effects of EVC on the progression of CIA mice were evaluated by oral treatment with different doses of the EVC for 28 days. After that, cytokine antibody microarray assay was used to detect the levels of multiple inflammation-related cytokines and chemokines in each group, and performed Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genome (KEGG) enrichment analysis. Subsequently, the potential target for the effective chemical components of EVC in treating RA was identified using various databases. Additionally, a drug-disease target protein-protein interaction network (PPI) was conducted using Cytoscape for visualization and clustering, while GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were performed with the Metascape database. Finally, identified phenotypes and targets by network pharmacology analysis were experimentally validated in vivo. Treatment with EVC significantly suppressed the severity of CIA with a dramatic reduction of paw swelling, arthritis index, levels of IgGs (IgG, IgG1, IgG2a, and IgG2b), multi-inflammation-related cytokines and chemokines on the progression of CIA. Histopathological examinations showed EVC could markedly inhibit inflammatory cell infiltration, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity of osteoclast, and bone destruction. Furthermore, GO and KEGG enrichment analyses revealed that EVC could ameliorate RA by inhibiting osteoclast differentiation and regulating multiple signaling pathways including Osteoclast differentiation, IL-17, and TNF. PPI network analysis demonstrated that AKT1, MMP9, MAPK3, and other genes were highly related to EVC in treating RA. Finally, we proved that EVC could inhibit the expression of NFTAc1, MMP9, Cathepsin K, and AKT which were closely related to osteoclast activity. EVC could treat RA through multiple components, multiple targets, and multiple pathways. The present study demonstrated the therapeutic efficacy of EVC and its molecular mechanisms in treating RA, indicating that it would be a potent candidate as a novel botanical drug for further investigation. • Latent class analysis identified seven patterns for school bullying perpetration and victimization. • There was an overlap between cyberbullying and traditional bullying. • Multiple social domain factors were associated with different patterns of school bullying. Adolescents involved in school bullying are a heterogeneous group. Yet less is known about school bullying patterns and their associated factors in social domains in China. The objective of the study was to use latent class analysis to identify patterns of school bullying involvement and to examine factors in individual, family, and school domains associated with each bullying pattern. Data were self-reported anonymously using a questionnaire completed by students from 3 middle schools and 4 high schools in a southern city in China (N = 13,166). A latent class analysis was conducted to identify involvement patterns in school bullying victimization and perpetration. Multinomial logistic regressions were used to examine factors in social domains associated with each pattern. Seven patterns of school bullying involvement were identified: Low Victim (14.5%), High Victim (4.4%), Sexual and Cyber Victim (2.5%), Physical Bully-Victim (1.4%), Verbal Bully-Victim (3.5%), All-Type Bully-Victim (3.3%) and Uninvolved (70.4%). Alcohol use, high frequency of using social networking sites, and distrusting people were associated with all bullying patterns (p <.05). Gender, grade level of schooling, boarding at school, cigarette smoking, being a class leader, poor academic performance, parents both working in other cities, poor relationships between family members, father's/mother's alcohol use, parental neglect, unpopularity at school, lack of feeling safe, and no close friends were each associated with at least one school bullying pattern (p <.05). Different types of school bullying victimization and perpetration co-occur among students and multiple social domain factors were associated with bullying patterns. Findings from this study suggest that consideration of the heterogeneity of school bullying and its associated factors are critical to developing targeted prevention interventions for different school bullying patterns.
