This paper examines Im Sun-deuk's two short stories, "Iryoil" (Sunday, 1937) and "Nazuke oya" (A Godmother, 1942). Im, an active participant in Korea's socialist movement in the 1930s, turned to literature as her career at a time when Japanese colonial authorities had tightened their control over Korea to further the Japanese empire's colonial expansion into China. In the process, the Japanese implemented an assimilation policy to mobilize the Korean people into the Japanese war effort. By employing the concept of confession in "Iryoil'' and "Nazuke oya," Im projects an autobiographical self onto her protagonists, both of whom are modern women striving to preserve their identities as socially conscious intellectuals committed to nationalism, socialism, and feminism. By positioning her protagonists as confessors to other characters in the texts, Im's short stories portray intellectuals in colonial Korea as in conflict or harmony with her protagonists. Im's protagonists embody female subjects who find a new kind of womanhood under Japanese colonial rule. However, in "Nazuke oya," Im's protagonist displays a more flexible and open attitude toward Koreans with attitudes and beliefs different from her own. In this sense, the act of confession as presented in Im's texts is an attempt to build a bond and sense of community among the Korean people from a woman's perspective, and at a time when Korean identity risked becoming obsolete. The paper aims at analyzing Mahesh Dattani's play Bravely Fought the Queen which portrays the subalternization of Indian women in the domestic and public realm in the patriarchal society. The paper reflects what Kate Millet has inferred in her treatise, Sexual politics that politics is not confined to political parties and Parliament, but it is exercised in any powerstructured correlation, arrangements where one gender is dominated by another. These oppressive relationships are most prevalent in our society and exaggerate gender differences. Politics is profoundly present in the man--woman relationship in family as well as at the societal level; it also focuses on successful and unsuccessful man-woman relationship and traces the reasons behind their manifestation and sustenance in the society. Mahesh Dattani's Bravely Fought the Queen is a typical Indian family play that depicts the life of the middle-class Trivedi family. Dattani has presented Jiten as a dominant advocate of patriarchy as he does not respect women. Lack of genuine feelings for woman is the major drawback of Jiten as a man. The objective of the study is to put forth the discrimination and injustice done to women of our society. Firdaus Kanga's novel, Trying to Grow, tells the story of Brit Kotwal, a young Parsi boy with osteogenesis imperfecta, negotiating his life in the Bombay of the 1970s. From the beginning, this semi-autobiographical work draws our attention to the common religious and medical perceptions of disability in Indian society. This paper proposes to study how the novel focuses on several aspects of the lived reality of a person with "brittle bones" who does not grow more than four feet tall. The paper also explores how the novel focuses on and confounds the commonly perceived notion of the asexuality of disabled individuals. Brit's voice is extremely aware and articulates positions of difference within disability and sexuality discourses. He is able to occupy what can be called a truly modern disability subjectivity. But, this paper shall show that Brit presents the reader with this modern, emancipatory rhetoric of disability because of the privileges of his gender and class status in the Indian context. Within the same text, Brit's disabled female cousin is literally and figuratively mute and meets with a very different fate. The paper shall thus investigate and try to complicate the representation of disability, sexuality and the "modern" disability subjectivity in Kanga's novel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article analyzes the short story "Triumphs of a Taxidermist'' appeared in The Pall Mall Gazette in March 1894 by H.G. Wells. The characters and plot line are explored. The author discusses with its mixture of fiction and non-fiction, journalism, interviews and advertisements thus influences the reception of the text, as the story is more likely to be read as a piece of journalism in this setting than when it appears in a collection of stories.

Jennine Capó Crucet is a Miami-born writer of Cuban immigrant parents. Although her work has yet to gain much recognition in the academy, Capó Crucet is the first Latina to win the Iowa Short Fiction Award in 2009 for How to Leave Hialeah, among numerous other honors. The present article analyzes Capó Crucet's short story "How to Leave Hialeah," the ending story of her debut collection. The narrative voice and protagonist satirize the notion of (not) returning to the homeland as an authenticator of cultural identity in diasporic communities in Miami. However, once the main character leaves, she inevitably reproduces and lives in the same discourses of (not) coming back. Thus, the idea of returning home in exiled characters is both reproduced and destabilized in the protagonist, who finally understands hers is a fluid, multiple identity, beyond the effects of internal-external migration processes on language, culture, and gender. I explore how the short story contests monolithic notions of belonging--in terms of nation(ality) and masculinist national imaginaries, spatiality, and family bonds and origins--by asserting, both linguistically and socially, new discourses that negotiate the global and the local in novel, nondichotomous ways. This review of Intersectional Pedagogy: Complicating Identity and Social Justice (2017) discusses how Kim A. Case's edited volume mobilizes knowledge about incorporating intersectional approaches in a range of classroom contexts.
