This paper argues for recognition of the centrality of relational pedagogy for student learning and the important role played by academic developers in supporting this. In the paper, the authors situate relational pedagogy within the context of contemporary marketized higher education, explore the nature and importance of relational pedagogy, and they illustrate some of the ways in which it may be developed and enacted. Academic developers play a significant role in supporting academics' understanding and practice of relational pedagogy. The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of a relational pedagogy at a time when care and relationships with others have mattered more than ever. In the Swedish educational system, there has been a recent push for digital technology in different school subjects. This paper investigates what regulates Swedish physical education teachers' perceptions of digital technology in outdoor education. The results is reflected in a number of rules that govern Swedish physical education teachers' perceptions and use of digital technology in outdoor education. Findings suggest that teachers' views on the relevance of digital technology in outdoor education depends partly on curriculum formulations, but of significant importance are also other factors such as: the addressed knowledge area, grade level, choice of digital device, needs of students, and teachers' ideological beliefs. These rules are discussed in relation to the construction of outdoor education as knowledge area within physical education and in relation to the ways in which Swedish physical education teachers relate to curriculum changes. This study sheds light on how to develop inclusive pedagogy in higher education, from the point of view of 42 inclusive faculty members from 6 Spanish universities. A qualitative methodology was used through semi-structured in-depth interviews. Data analysis was inductive, using a system of categories and topics. The results reveal that the faculty members which develop inclusive pedagogy in general have beliefs linked to the social model of disability and inclusive education approaches. They do not usually have specific training or knowledge about disability. They design their curricula in a flexible and open way to accommodate all students. They show a positive attitude toward students with disabilities and use diverse and participatory teaching methodologies, giving prominence to students. These data are consistent with those found in previous studies and offer keys to those faculty members who are interested in developing an inclusive pedagogy at the university. This paper examines in detail how faculty members of six faculties of educational sciences develop a theoretical framework comprising beliefs, knowledge, designs and actions. The research has found that faculty members hold beliefs about disability based on the social model of disability and inclusive approach. In general, inclusive faculty members' knowledge of disability and attention to diversity issues is scarce. The design of courses and teaching programmes led by inclusive university faculty is characterised by being open, flexible and providing clear and detailed information to students. Faculty who develop inclusive pedagogy use varied, participative and active methodologies, which are combined with a positive and approachable attitude towards students with disabilities. Given the large body of evidence linking physical and mental health and the impetus provided by health care reform and the Affordable Care Act, the time is ripe to engage nurses in community based, integrated primary care teams to holistically address psychiatric, mental health and substance abuse needs. There is a compelling need for curricular redesign and clinical innovation to prepare an RN workforce for practice in community based integrated primary care teams. To that end, a faculty team of primary care, interprofessional education and content experts developed the Transforming RN Roles in Community Based Integrated Primary Care (TRIP) program for BSN students in a large university in the southeastern United States. The primary goals of the TRIP program are to build/implement an innovative BSN curriculum and expand our academic practice partnership by enhancing student clinical experiences with the goal of preparing an RN workforce for practice in community based integrated care teams. The TRIP program incorporates didactic, simulation and clinical components. Our first student cohort began the TRIP program in the fall of 2018 and will complete the program in spring 2020. Patterns of participation in higher education (HE) in the UK, as elsewhere, have been marked by social inequalities for decades. UK Governments have responded with a plethora of policies and agendas aimed at addressing this broad social issue. However, little is known about how higher education institutions (HEIs) interpret and 'enact' these policies in relation to institution-specific contexts. Drawing on concepts from policy sociology this paper examines how HEIs in one nation state, Wales, enact its Government's policy on 'widening access' to higher education. Interviews with a range of 'policy actors' along with analyses of institutional 'widening access' policy documents, reveal divergences between HEIs in how this policy agenda is interpreted and delivered. These differences reflect institution-specific contexts - not least their internal politics and assumptions about the type of students they admit, but also their interests and priorities in relation to their positions within a global, marketised, HE system. This study examined student experiences participating in a peer-led three-day wilderness canoe excursion in Northern Ontario, Canada. This program is a mandatory outdoor experience program (MOEP) for third-year students and is the final course in a progressive series of outdoor experiences offered at the beginning of the first, second, and third year. Guided by principles of realist evaluation, the written reflections from consenting students in the 2015 MOEP cohort were analyzed to identify the contexts and mechanisms associated with enjoyment or lack of enjoyment of their trip. These findings will help improve the MOEP program and have implications for similar intentionally led outdoor programs offered at other higher education institutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explored faculty experiences with teaching in contexts that are becoming more linguistically and culturally diverse (LCD). The findings revealed that the majority of the participants did not receive training to teach LCD populations. Challenges faced by faculty were attributed to gaps in students' linguistic and cultural competencies and a lack of students' academic preparedness. Faculty also expressed concerns regarding class sizes and lack of support by the host institution for LCD students and faculty. This study explores whether variability in the implementation of an undergraduate course on human flourishing is differentially associated with student outcomes. 101 students in the "Art and Science of Human Flourishing" course across three large, public, R1 universities in Fall 2018 participated in the study. Formative course data included researcher observations of weekly class pedagogy, students' weekly meditation practice logs and end-of-course assessments, and pre/post surveys measuring changes in participating students' outcomes related to flourishing (e.g., attentional skills, social-emotional skills, perspectives on flourishing, mental and physical health). Although course pedagogy and student engagement varied across the three universities, students' outcomes were nonetheless similar. Variability in course implementation did not appear to differentially affect students' outcomes. We tentatively conclude that other institutions interested in offering the flourishing course may make limited adaptations to fit their pedagogical preferences without concern for altering its impact on students. Intergenerational classroom activities have been used to enhance age inclusivity in higher education in the traditional aging curriculum. As ageism continues to be prevalent, there is a need to extend intergenerational contact across the curriculum. Moreover, intergenerational exchange can be an asset to content learning in diverse classrooms. As part of the Age-Friendly University (AFU) initiative that emphasizes the value of intergenerational teaching and learning, students and older adults were brought together in the present classroom case study in a forensic science course. The older adults residing in the institution's affiliated university-based retirement community (UBRC) developed a mock crime scene scenario for students to solve and engaged with students as they analyzed evidence. Students were surveyed regarding their perceived learning gains and reactions to the intergenerational activity. Students' responses indicated that the intergenerational experience had both a positive impact on content learning and the perceived value of intergenerational exchange to enhance learning in non-aging focused courses. BackgroundCollege binge drinking continues to be a pervasive issue across campuses nationwide. Though curriculum infusion (CI) has been shown to be an effective strategy to reduce students' negative consequences related to alcohol, information about the process is limited. PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the content and process of CI and to identify elements necessary for successful implementation of CI to strengthen interventions. MethodsThe development of CI in this study occurred in multiple stages: recruitment of faculty, discussions about the process and how the instructor wished to use CI in their course, development of the curriculum and materials, faculty review of curriculum, expert panel review of curriculum, observation of implemented curriculum, and interviews with participating instructors (n = 4). ResultsA thematic qualitative data analysis revealed the following themes: student response to CI, courses suitable for using CI to address alcohol abuse, people involved in CI initiative, social norms, pre- and posttesting, and instructor training. DiscussionAdequate CI training for instructors should be mandatory and include information about social norms, how to defend data, consistent messaging, and how to lead class discussion on sensitive topics without reinforcing myths. This case will cover the experiences that the Online Learning Librarian (OLL) and E-resources Librarian (ERL) worked on adding a module about privacy to a 1 credit Information Literacy course at the University of North Florida (UNF). There will be a discussion of what motivated the OLL to include data privacy as a module within Canvas, how the module was implemented, and the student experience in this course. At UNF, librarians have taught undergraduates in LIS1001 "Beginning Library and Information Systems Studies since the 1980s. The course has focused on information literacy and information freedom; data privacy, however, has not been included. Despite this, many students have asked about what happens to their data submitted into UNF systems. When students enter the UNF Thomas G. Carpenter library, they must scan their student IDs, which provides the library statistical data of major, academic standing and other identifying information. In addition, all students, in person or online, must use authentication when logging into computers, into databases, when reading ebooks, etc. Since Dan Feinberg, the OLL, started working at UNF in 2017, students complained to him regarding the data necessary to attend school. These off-the-cuff discussions reflected a desire for information freedom. After discussing privacy issues, the ERL and the OLL decided to come up with a module on data privacy that would work for undergraduates in the LIS1001 course. The OLL and ERL considered what aspects of privacy to cover (i.e. how much on technology) and resources to include, focusing on materials appropriate for undergraduates and that related to their experience. The OLL developed and built a unique module in Canvas that was used already in one course and will be used in future semesters. Within this structure, students learned about privacy issues in higher education and expressed their interpretations of privacy, what it means to them, and considered what they are willing and able to sacrifice to maintain privacy as college students in 2020. The global COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a rapid transition to online teaching for universities during the current and ensuing years. Graduate social work students need advanced knowledge and skills in leadership and supervision to become future leaders in human service organizations. However, social workers are often promoted to management from direct service positions without adequate skills and training and schools of social work may not formally educate students for leadership and administrative positions. Scholarly literature and research about leadership training for social work students, specifically online training, is also scarce. This article examines how two Canadian schools of social work addressed this gap through the development of graduate master of social work courses on leadership and supervision as mandatory components of their curriculum, through on-campus and online formats. Varying course approaches, topics, instructional strategies, assignments, and themes collected and analyzed from online surveys of student feedback are described, emphasizing strengths (satisfaction, relevance, benefits, course design), challenges (content, timing), and lessons learned (importance, new learning, confidence, future roles). Recommendations for similar educational disruptions, future courses, and practice implications, including teaching resources and instructor adaptability to support the rapid transition to online and blended learning formats, are also discussed. In an aging society, caring for older adults poses large burden on the working population; in this context, positive intergenerational interaction and understanding are thus extremely crucial. Here, we developed a model to integrate intergenerational learning into elder education in university by conducting a case study at a Taiwanese university by using a 6-year experimental teaching programme. We performed content analysis to examine the syllabi of courses, students' midterm and final reflective reports each year, as well as the interview from teachers who had participated in the experimental project. With reference to the current intergenerational theories and case study in Taiwan, we constructed a teaching model to guide university teachers in how to construct an intergenerational learning course from goal setting, elder member introduction, and content design to course evaluation. This World Psychiatric Association (WPA) global survey of its WPA member society presidents using an online self-administered 15-item questionnaire successfully recruited 47 WPA member countries or regions (response rate = 39.8%) to provide responses about training provisions of psychiatric education at undergraduate, postgraduate, and post-qualified levels in their respective countries. There were significantly fewer responses from the low and middle income countries (LMIC) than the high income countries (HIC). At undergraduate level, the median duration of psychiatric education during medical school education was 4.0%. However, the current allocated time for psychiatric education was only around one-third to one-half of the time considered as optimal by the member countries or regions (optimal mean = 8.9%; optimal median = 10%). At the postgraduate level, the duration of training varied widely from 12–72 months, with a mean duration of 48 months. In 31% of the respondent countries, psychiatrists only required 36 or fewer months of post-graduate training. The number of months of training required for training a psychiatrist was significantly fewer in the LMIC than HIC. At post-qualified continuing medical education level, all respondents reported providing post-qualified continuing medical education. This teaching note discusses a teach-in organized in response to a racist incident on a college campus. An examination of the history of teach-ins demonstrates that social work educators have been involved with them since the beginning of the profession, and the method is a natural fit for social work given its historic role. Social work educators have unique professional and ethical responsibilities to respond to hate crimes and other racist incidents on campus and to develop the competencies of social work students to do the same. Teach-ins are a model for doing so in ways that demonstrate the profession's commitments to social justice advocacy, social justice education, and a robust implicit curriculum. As comprehensive school physical activity program (CSPAP) professional development becomes increasingly available to current K-12 physical education teachers, this special feature shifts attention to the preparation of future PE teachers and teacher educators for CSPAP. The purpose of this concluding article is to summarize the undergraduate- and graduate-level CSPAP integration efforts from the 12 pioneering physical education teacher education (PETE) programs presented in this two-part special feature across coursework, learning objectives, learning experiences, training/certifications, research initiatives, and future strategies. Physical education teacher education (PETE) programs are often driven in large part by the external demands of state and national accreditation, such as standardized teacher certification exams. Furthermore, the state of New York requires that practicing teachers be evaluated each year through structured observations, together with quantitative evidence of standards-based learning from pre-and post-test growth measures. Neither public health goals nor comprehensive school physical activity program (CSPAP) program development are a part of this accountability system. Thus, the PETE program at Adelphi University must retain a focus on the existing PETE standards and accountability until those expectations are aligned with CSPAP. Nevertheless, the value of CSPAPs in schools is clear, and Adelphi has been moving toward a CSPAP-based program sensibility for the next generation of physical educators. This article describes how pedagogy faculty are reframing the role of physical education in schools and redefining responsibilities for physical education teachers, while still continuing to stress the content and pedagogy which the program and students are accountable for. This article will highlight ways in which the University of Utah has collaboratively promoted and prepared doctoral students to teach and conduct research on comprehensive school physical activity programs (CSPAPs). Specifically, the article addresses the coursework, assistantships/practical experiences, and research requirements that are used to prepare Ph.D. candidates to train physical education teacher education students in all aspects of a CSPAP. The benefits of including the study of the history of mathematics in the education of mathematics majors have been discussed at length elsewhere. Many colleges and universities now offer a History of Mathematics course for mathematics majors, for mathematics education majors, or for general credit. At Hood College, we emphasize our commitment to the liberal arts by including history in many courses. We use various methods to weave the history of mathematics through all the courses in the major, culminating in our senior seminar.
