The accurate estimation of forest aboveground biomass is of great significance for forest management and carbon balance monitoring. Remote sensing instruments have been widely applied in forest parameters inversion with wide coverage and high spatiotemporal resolution. In this paper, the capability of different remote-sensed imagery was investigated, including multispectral images (GaoFen-6, Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8) and various SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data (GaoFen-3, Sentinel-1, ALOS-2), in aboveground forest biomass estimation. In particular, based on the forest inventory data of Hangzhou in China, the Random Forest (RF), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Convolutional Neural Networks Long Short-Term Memory Networks (CNN-LSTM) algorithms were deployed to construct the forest biomass estimation models, respectively. The estimate accuracies were evaluated under the different configurations of images and methods. The results show that for the SAR data, ALOS-2 has a higher biomass estimation accuracy than the GaoFen-3 and Sentinel-1. Moreover, the GaoFen-6 data is slightly worse than Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 optical data in biomass estimation. In contrast with the single source, integrating multisource data can effectively enhance accuracy, with improvements ranging from 5% to 10%. The CNN-LSTM generally performs better than CNN and RF, regardless of the data used. The combination of CNN-LSTM and multisource data provided the best results in this case and can achieve the maximum R2 value of up to 0.74. It was found that the majority of the biomass values in the study area in 2018 ranged from 60 to 90 Mg/ha, with an average value of 64.20 Mg/ha. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Monitoring mine activities can help management track the status of mineral resource exploration and mine rehabilitation. It is crucial to the sustainable development of the mining industry and the protection of the geological environment in mining areas. To monitor the mining activities of shallow surface outcrops in the arid and semi-arid regions of northwest China, this paper proposes a remote sensing monitoring approach of mining activities based on deep learning and integrated interferometric synthetic aperture radar technique. This approach uses the DeepLabV3-ResNet model to identify and extract the spatial location of the mine patches and then uses object-oriented analysis and spatial analysis methods to optimize the mine patch boundaries. SBAS-InSAR technique is used to obtain the time-series deformation information of the mine patches and is combined with the multi-temporal optical imagery to analyze the mining activities in the study area. The proposed approach has a recognition accuracy of 95.80% for the identification and extraction of mine patches, with an F1-score of 0.727 at the pixel level, and the average area similarity for all patches is 0.78 at the object-oriented level. The proposed approach possesses the capability to analyze mining activities, indicating promising prospects for engineering applications. On June 17, 2020, Aniangzhai landslide, an ancient landslide located in Danba County, southwest China, was reactivated by Meilonggou debris flow. The front edge of the slope collapsed, mobilizing a soil mass of about 2.35 × 106 m3. Evaluating the stability of the whole slope is of great importance to avoid further landslides and mitigate the damage for Aniangzhai villagers living on this slope. This paper focuses on the inaccessible upper slope of Aniangzhai landslide (no attention paid before) that exhibits a relative elevation difference of more than 1000 m. Multi-source remote sensing, including unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry, light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and satellite-based interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques, was used in this research to identify and evaluate this high mountain upper slope potential hazard in Aniangzhai landslide. Considering the huge height difference and the steep slope of Aniangzhai landslide, an iterative route planning method was proposed and adopted to obtain a 3D model with 0.02 m resolution and a DEM with 0.25 m resolution by using UAV and LiDAR close-in flight method, respectively. Meter-level huge cracks were clearly identified by the high-resolution UAV 3D model and LiDAR data, which confirm that the location of these cracks is related to the morphological structure of this ancient landslide. Time series InSAR analysis reveals the activity of this high-altitude area, with a maximum LOS displacement rate of 15 cm/a. The combination of the above remote sensing technologies confirms and reveals the high potential risk and the reactivated condition of the upper slope of Aniangzhai landslide. Through this finding, we show that the evolution of Aniangzhai landslide happened through four stages with a cascading effect. This paper proves the usefulness of an integrated method to successfully identify and evaluate the high-altitude upper slope potential hazard and compares the technical features of them, providing a reference for future works that aimed at mitigating the potential damage of the upper slope. Corn is an important food crop worldwide, and its yield is directly related to Chinese food security. Accurate remote sensing extraction of corn can realize the rational application of land resources, which is of great significance to the sustainable development of modern agriculture. In the field of large-scale crop remote sensing classification, single-period optical remote sensing images often cannot achieve high-precision classification. To improve classification accuracy, multiple time series image combinations have gradually been adopted. However, due to the influence of cloudy and rainy weather, it is often difficult to obtain complete time series optical images. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are imaged by microwaves, which have strong penetrating power and are not affected by clouds. A critical way to solve this problem is to use SAR images to compensate for the lack of optical images and obtain a complete time series image in the corn-growing season. However, SAR images have limited wavelengths and cannot provide important wavelengths, such as visible light bands and near-infrared information. To solve this problem, this study took Zhaodong City, a vital corn-planting base in China, as the research area; took GF-6/GF-3 and Sentinel-1/Sentinel-2 as remote sensing data sources; designed12 classification scenarios; analyzed the best classification period and the best time series combination of corn classification; studied the influence of SAR images on the classification results of time series images; and compared the classification differences between GF-6/GF-3 and Sentinel-1/Sentinel-2. The results show that the classification accuracy of time series combinations is much higher than that of single-period images. The polarization characteristics of SAR images can improve the classification accuracy with time series images. The classification accuracy of GF series images from China is obviously higher than that of Sentinel series images. The world's largest macroalgae bloom (also known as green tide) has been reported since the 29th Olympic Games in 2008, which is verified as the fast reproduction of floating green macroalgae (Ulva prolifera). It is helpful to assess the biomass of macroalgae for the government of marine environment protection. In this study, the synchronization cruise experiment was firstly introduced, which aimed to investigate the biomass evaluation of Ulva prolifera in the Yellow Sea of China. The Floating Algae Index by Polarimetric SAR image (FAIPS) was then proposed. Finally, the floating algae biomass evaluation model was demonstrated and verified, which showed an exponential relationship between FAIPS and wet biomass per area (kg/m2) of macroalgae. The model proposed in this paper can be used in the biomass assessment of floating algae in the presence of polarimetric SAR images, regardless of daylight and cloud coverage over the sea surface. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) is an integrated navigation technique that can be used for aircraft positioning and attitude retrieval, regardless of weather conditions. The key aspect of the entire system is interference fringe matching, which has not been extensively researched in existing literature. To address this gap, this paper proposes a terrain-feature-based interference fringe-matching algorithm. The proposed algorithm first extracts mountain line features from the interference fringes and identifies mountain branch points as key points for feature matching. A threshold is set to eliminate false detections of mountain branch points caused by phase mutation. Matching is then carried out by combining the mountain line features and curvature design feature descriptors of the area around a branch point. The proposed algorithm is verified using interference fringe data obtained from an actual flight experiment in Inner Mongolia, China, compared to a reference interference fringe dataset with errors. The results show that, under the condition of position error, the proposed algorithm yields 72 matching inliers with a precision of 0.103, a recall of 0.128, and an F1-Score of 0.144. Compared to traditional algorithms, our proposed algorithm significantly improves the problem of mismatch and opens up new possibilities for downstream interference fringe matching navigation technology. Coal fire disasters generally occur in major coal-producing countries. They destroyed many coal resources and triggered various environmental problems. The identification and state assessment of coal fire areas are paramount to coal fire management. In this paper, a method for identifying coal fires by integrating land surface temperatures (LSTs) from multitemporal thermal infrared remote sensing and subsidence information from multitemporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (MT-InSAR) is proposed. The method primarily consists of estimating the LSTs and subsidence values, normalizing and equidistantly partitioning the LSTs, estimating the thermal anomaly frequency (TAF), extracting high-subsidence areas, determining the thermal anomaly frequency threshold (TAFT), and identifying coal fire areas according to the TAFT. The coal fire ratio index (CRI) was developed to quantitatively evaluate the severity of coal fires and its variations. Midong District, Urumqi, Xinjiang, China, was selected as the study area. Forty-five Landsat 8 images and sixty-one Sentinel-1 SAR images were used to retrieve LST and subsidence time series, respectively. The proposed method and CRI were applied to identify and evaluate coal fires in the study area. The results demonstrate the satisfactory reliability of these methods compared with field surveys. The maximum CRI was 6.145 × 10-4 (July 28, 2019), and the minimum CRI was 2.685 × 10-5 (January 13, 2020). Coal fires in summer were more severe than those in winter. The CRI profile presented seasonal and annual periodicities and was affected by the local climate. The soil cohesion and humidity are higher in winter due to possible snowmelt, which weakens the interaction between oxygen and coal seams and the subsequent combustion of coal. The LST, thermal anomaly, and deformation information were combined in a time series overlay analysis to reveal the differences in the LSTs and subsidence values among mining areas, coal fire areas, and areas with both mining and coal fires. • An ecological risk assessment model of Jiaozhou bay in China is established. • The model is developed based on multi-source satellite and in-situ sample datasets. • The effects of multiple risk sources threatening the ecology are considered. • The risk sources for multiple years are detected using remote sensing images. • The ecological risk situation of Jiaozhou Bay for multiple years is assessed. Healthy coastal area have high ecological service value. However, because of the uncontrolled utilization of marine resources and the discharge of pollutants, the ecological environments of many coastal areas are faced with ecological risks, such as oil spills and Enteromorpha blooms. Therefore, it is of great significance to monitor and assess the ecological risks in coastal areas. The remote sensing technique can be used to obtain frequent and wide-coverage images of the areas of interest, and has become an effective tool to monitor the ecological risks occurring in coastal areas. In this study, taking Jiaozhou Bay in China as the study area, an innovative ecological risk assessment framework was established using multi-source remote sensing images and in-situ sample data, which fully considers the potential harm of oil spills and Enteromorpha blooms on the ecology of the bay. Specifically, the oil spill risk for Jiaozhou Bay from 2017 to 2019 was identified by a deep learning based method from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, and the Enteromorpha bloom risk for the corresponding years was identified by a floating algae index (FAI) threshold method from multi-source optical images. Then, using habitat information and ground observation data about the marine species in the bay, environmental vulnerability maps were generated. Finally, a disaster-causing factors and disaster-bearing factors weighted risk assessment model was developed. The risk source monitoring results show that the occurrence frequency of oil spills in Jiaozhou Bay decreased from 2017 to 2019, while the outbreak intensity of Enteromorpha blooms generally became higher. The ecological risk assessment results reveal that the high risk areas of Jiaozhou Bay are mainly around the transportation regions and the ports, with a higher risk degree in the eastern and southern parts. To support our work, the well-trained oil spill detection network model and some information about the oil spill events that have occurred in Jiaozhou Bay are provided in this paper. After mastering the key technologies of manufacturing spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), China's SAR satellites have been successfully launched into space. As the only civil microwave satellite listed in the "National High-resolution Earth Observation System Major Project," the Gaofen-3 (GF-3) 01 satellite is the first C-band multi-polarization SAR satellite with a resolution of 1 m. GF-3 series satellites stand out among civil SAR satellites worldwide because of their high resolution, wide swath, high geometric radiation quality, multiple imaging modes, and long operation time. Taking GF-3 series satellites as an example, this study introduces the development of China's civil SAR satellites, as well as their processing strategies and applications. A catastrophic landslide occurred on 21 July 2020, 30 km from Enshi city, in Mazhe County of Hubei province, China. In this paper, we aimed to investigate the kinematic evolution and volumetric change related to this landslide using multi-source remote sensing measurements from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical data. C-band Sentinel-1 and X-band TerraSAR-X SAR data are analyzed using several multi-temporal interferometry (MTI) time-series techniques including Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI), Small Baseline subset (SBAS), and Combined eigenvalue maximum likelihood Phase Linking (CPL). The spatial pattern of surface deformation resulting from the interferometric analysis is then statistically analyzed to retrieve the pre-failure and post-failure displacements. Co-failure motions are analyzed using an image correlation technique applied to both the Planetscope and Sentinel-2 images. Moreover, 4 pairs of bistatic TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X (TDX) data are utilized to generate high-precision digital elevation models (DEMs) and estimate the volumetric change related to the main slope failure. The pre-failure ground deformation analysis results suggest that the landslide was already active before the July 2020 failure, with the seasonality and hydraulic diffusivity being characteristics of a slow-moving landslide. Among the three different MTI methods applied, the CPL method results in a greater measurement points (MPs) density than the PSI and SBAS method when estimating the pre-failure movement of the Shaziba landslide. The July 2020 Shaziba disaster is divided into three main parts: (1) slightly horizontal deformation of 0.5–1.5 m within the northern part with ground and house cracks, (2) less collapse in the eastern part with horizontal motions reaching 30 m and (3) a highly eroded western part where vegetation was wholly lost in the main event, resulting in an collapse volume of approximately 4.98 million m3, out of which approximately around 3.4 million m3 was deposited and approximately 1.58 million m3 was washed away into the Qing River. Accurate identification of sandy land plays an important role in sandy land prevention and control. It is difficult to identify the nature of sandy land due to vegetation covering the soil in the sandy area. Therefore, HJ-2A hyperspectral data and GF-3 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data were used as the main data sources in this article. The advantages of the spectral characteristics of a hyperspectral image and the penetration characteristics of SAR data were used synthetically to carry out mixed-pixel decomposition in the "horizontal" direction and polarization decomposition in the "vertical" direction. The results showed that in the study area of the Otingdag Sandy Land, in China, the accuracy of sandy land detection based on feature-level fusion and single GF-3 data was verified to be 92% in both cases by field data; the accuracy of sandy land detection based on feature-level fusion was verified to be 88.74% by the data collected from Google high-resolution imagery, which was higher than that based on single HJ-2A (74.17%) and single GF-3 data (88.08%). To further verify the universality of the feature-level fusion method for sandy land detection, Alxa sandy land was also used as a verification area and the accuracy of sandy land detection was verified to be as high as 88.74%. The method proposed in this paper made full use of the horizontal and vertical structural information of remote sensing data. The problem of mixed pixels in sparse-vegetation scenes in the horizontal direction and the problem of vegetation covering sandy soil in the vertical direction were both well solved. • The monitoring and estimation method of Winter Wheat Soil Moisture Based on multi-source sensing data and CNNR model is studied in this paper. • The proposed CNNR model has the best prediction accuracy. With the decrease of the SNR of radar echo, CNNR always has higher R2 and RPD, which indicates that the CNNR model can better predict the change trend close to the real value. Therefore, CNNR model has the best noise robustness among the three models. Rapid and accurate estimation of soil moisture content (SMC) is an important part of precision agriculture, and it is also one of the key problems to be solved in field real-time monitoring and precision irrigation. Most of the existing studies are limited to SMC monitoring of bare soil, which can be obtained by optical remote sensing (e.g., multispectral, hyperspectral) or Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). However, for the soil covered by vegetation, such as farmland, there are some theoretical defects with only one of the measuring methods. Meanwhile, in order to break through the limitations of low spatial and temporal resolutions of satellite remote sensing, it is of great significance to study SMC retrieval based on multi-source remote sensing data for the near earth UAV remote sensing systems. Based on this, this paper, taking the winter wheat planting area in Guanzhong plain of China as the research area, combines the advantages of ultra-wideband (UWB) radar, and multispectral remote sensing data, to reduce the influences of vegetation coverage on the estimation accuracy. A one-dimensional regression convolution neural network model is constructed to realize the quantitative prediction and estimation of SMC in farmland. The carried out experiments show that the proposed CNNR model has a better performance than traditional SVR and GRNN models and the R2, RMSE and RPD are 0.7453, 0.0140 cm3/cm3 and 1.9246, respectively. After introducing NDVI, MSAVI and DVI vegetation indices generated from multispectral images, the accuracy of the three models increased significantly. Among the three models, the constructed CNNR model has the best performance, and its R2, RMSE and RPD reach 0.9168, 0.0089 cm3/cm3, and 3.0201. Furthermore, after adding different levels of Gaussian noise to the original radar echoes, the CNNR model constructed in this paper still has the highest prediction accuracy and the strongest noise robustness. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image is an effective remote sensing data source for geographic surveys. However, accurate land cover mapping based on SAR image in areas of complex terrain has become a challenge due to serious geometric distortions and the inadequate separation ability of dual-polarization data. To address these issues, a new land cover mapping framework which is suitable for complex terrain is proposed based on Gaofen-3 data of ascending and descending orbits. Firstly, the geometric distortion area is determined according to the local incident angle, based on analysis of the SAR imaging mechanism, and the correct polarization information of the opposite track is used to compensate for the geometric distortion area, including layovers and shadows. Then, the dual orbital polarization characteristics (DOPC) and dual polarization radar vegetation index (DpRVI) of dual-pol SAR data are extracted, and the optimal feature combination is found by means of Jeffries–Matusita (J-M) distance analysis. Finally, the deep learning method 2D convolutional neural network (2D-CNN) is applied to classify the compensated images. The proposed method was applied to a mountainous region of the Danjiangkou ecological protection area in China. The accuracy and reliability of the method were experimentally compared using the uncompensated images and the images without DpRVI. Quantitative evaluation revealed that the proposed method achieved better performance in complex terrain areas, with an overall accuracy (OA) score of 0.93, and a Kappa coefficient score of 0.92. Compared with the uncompensated image, OA increased by 5% and Kappa increased by 6%. Compared with the images without DpRVI, OA increased by 4% and Kappa increased by 5%. In summary, the results demonstrate the importance of ascending and descending orbit data to compensate geometric distortion and reveal the effectiveness of optimal feature combination including DpRVI. Radiometric terrain correction (RTC) is an important preprocessing step for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data application in mountainous areas. At present, the RTC processing of SAR depends on the Range Doppler (RD) positioning model. However, the solution of this model has a high threshold for ordinary remote sensing technicians. To solve this problem, we propose an RTC method based on the rational polynomial coefficient (RPC) model, which is widely used in optical remote sensing and is simpler and more practical than the RD model. China's GF-3 polarimetric SAR data were used to verify the proposed method. The experimental results showed that the RTC method based on RPC is effective and can achieve better correction effects on the premise of reducing the complexity of the algorithm. The correction effect based on the RPC model can be similar to that based on the RD model. The proposed approach can realize the correction of 4~5 dB terrain radiation distortion to a 0.5 dB level. Health monitoring is important for densely distributed urban infrastructures, particularly in cities undergoing rapid economic progress. Permanent scatterer interferometry (PSI) is an advanced remote sensing observation technique that is commonly used in urban infrastructure monitoring. However, the rapid construction of infrastructures may easily cause a loss of coherence for radar interferometry, inducing a low density of effective permanent scatterer (PS) points, which is the main limitation of PSI. In order to address these problems, a novel time-series synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) process based on the adaptive window homogeneous pixel selection and phase optimization (AWHPSPO) algorithm and thermal expansion linear model (TELM) is proposed. Firstly, for homogeneous point selection, information on both the time-series intensity and deformation phases is considered, which can compensate for the defects of insufficient homogeneous samples and low phase quality in traditional distributed scatterer interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DS-InSAR) processing. Secondly, the physical, thermal expansion component, which reflects the material properties of the infrastructures, is introduced into the traditional linear model, which can more rationally reflect the temporal evolution of deformation variation, and the thermal expansion coefficients can be estimated simultaneously with the deformation parameters. In order to verify our proposed algorithm, the Orange Island area in Changsha City, China, was selected as the study area in this experiment. Three years of its historical time-series deformation fields and thermal expansion coefficients were regenerated. With the use of high-resolution TerraSAR-X radar satellite images, a maximum accumulated settlement of 12.3 mm and a minor uplift of 8.2 mm were detected. Crossvalidation with small baseline subset interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) results using Sentinel 1A data proved the reliability of AWHPSPO. Landslides in high-order position areas pose a serious threat to residents located below such areas. Therefore, research on the evolution process and underlying dynamic mechanisms is crucial. The majority of relevant studies are based on landslides that have already occurred; however, the investigation of potential landslides is of higher value. In this study, a progressive potential landslide identification method is proposed with the application of SBAS-InSAR (Small Baseline Subset Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) and subsequently combined with Google Earth, GF-1 (Gaofen-1), GF-2 (Gaofen-2), ZY-3 (Ziyuan-3) and UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) imagery, and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) for further validation. The proposed method is employed to determine the potential landslide in Tuanjiecun by integrating the multi-period data to simultaneously analyze the evolution and mechanism of the potential landslide. The long short-term memory method is then adopted to predict the evolution trend based on accumulative deformation from SBAS-InSAR. The results suggest that the deformation of Tuanjiecun potential landslide will increase to −238.57 mm. This article provides a new approach for disaster prevention and mitigation by determining a potential landslide using composite remote sensing and predicting the development of the potential landslide on indirect contact monitoring. On 20 July 2021, an extraordinary rainfall event occurred in Henan Province, China, resulting in heavy waterlogging, flooding, and hundreds of fatalities and causing considerable property damage. Because the damaged region was a major grain-producing region of China, assessing crop food production losses following this event is very important. Because the crop rotation production system is utilized in the region to accommodate two crops per year, it is very valuable to accurately identify the types of crops affected by the event and to assess the crop production losses separately; however, the results obtained using these methods are still inadequate. In this study, we used China's first commercial synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data source, named Hisea-1, together with other open-source and widely used remote sensing data (Sentinel-1 and Sentinel 2), to monitor this catastrophic flood. Both the modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI) and Sentinel-1 dual-polarized water index (SDWI) were calculated, and an unsupervised classification (k-means) method was adopted for rapid water body extraction. Based on time-series datasets synthesized from multiple sources, we obtained four flooding characteristics, including the flooded area, flood duration, and start and end times of flooding. Then, according to these characteristics, we conducted a more precise analysis of the damages to flooded farmlands. We used the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform to obtain normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time-series data for the disaster year and normal years and overlaid the flooded areas to extract the effects of flooding on crop species. According to the statistics from previous years, we calculated the areas and types of damaged crops and the yield reduction amounts. Our results showed that (1) the study area endured two floods in July and September of 2021; (2) the maximum areas affected by these two flooding events were 380.2 km2 and 215.6 km2, respectively; (3) the floods significantly affected winter wheat and summer grain (maize or soybean), affecting areas of 106.4 km2 and 263.3 km2, respectively; and (4) the crop production reductions in the affected area were 18,708 t for winter wheat and 160,000 t for maize or soybean. These findings indicate that the temporal-dimension information, as opposed to the traditional use of the affected area and the yield per unit area when estimating food losses, is very important for accurately estimating damaged crop types and yield reductions. Time-series remote sensing data, especially SAR remote sensing data, which have the advantage of penetrating clouds and rain, play an important role in remotely sensed disaster monitoring. Hisea-1 data, with a high spatial resolution and first flood-monitoring capabilities, show their value in this study and have the potential for increased usage in further studies, such as urban flooding research. Forests are crucial in carbon sequestration and oxygen release. An accurate assessment of forest carbon storage is meaningful for Chinese cities to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality. For an accurate estimation of regional-scale forest aboveground carbon density, this study applied a Sentinel-2 multispectral instrument (MSI), Advanced Land Observing Satellite 2 (ALOS-2) L-band, and Sentinel-1 C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to estimate and map the forest carbon density. Considering the forest field-inventory data of eastern China from 2018 as an experimental sample, we explored the potential of the deep-learning algorithms convolutional neural network (CNN) and Keras. The results showed that vegetation indices from Sentinel-2, backscatter and texture characters from ALOS-2, and coherence from Sentinel-1 were principal contributors to the forest carbon-density estimation. Furthermore, the CNN model was found to perform better than traditional models. Results of forest carbon-density estimation validated the improvements effectively by combining the optical and radar data. Compared with traditional regression methods, deep learning has a higher potential for accurately estimating forest carbon density using multisource remote-sensing data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Red-bed soft rock, characterized by the gentle slope, low intensity, and weak weathering resistance, is widely distributed over the Eastern Sichuan Province, China, threatening many lives of people, economy development, and urbanization progress. In this study, Multi-Temporal Synthetic Aperture Radar interferometry (MTInSAR) techniques and detailed field investigations were carried out to detect the potential red-bed landslides. The strategies of small baselines, phase optimization, and atmospheric delay removal were proved to be effective in improving the deformation results. Finally, dozens of slow-moving slopes were found and attributed to frequent human activities, and the applicability of various monitoring tools and the comparisons of their results were discussed. This research is aimed at proving the applicability of remote sensing measures in the monitoring of landslides, increasing the efficiency of this method, and helping the hazard prevention in Southwest China. Southwest China has abundant grassland resources, but they are mainly scattered across fragmented mountainous terrain with frequently cloudy and rainy weather, making their accurate identification by remote sensing challenging. Therefore, the goal of this study was to generate prefecture-level city-scale mountainous grassland distribution data to support the development of sustainable grassland husbandry. Here, we proposed a sample selection method and comprehensively utilized multi-source data to obtain the quasi-10 m southwest grassland distribution data. The sample selection method was to first determine the sample selection range based on multi-source land use/cover database, and then to randomly select the samples under the constraint of secondary land use types, multiple factors of terrain and pure pixels. This method can deal with the difficulty in identifying the fragmented grassland distribution caused by steep mountains and hills. In addition, a multispectral time series dataset was constructed based on the fusion of Landsat 8 OLI and Sentinel-2A/B data due to cloudy and rainy weather and was used as one of the input features along with synthetic aperture radar Sentinel-1 time series data and the terrain multi-factor data. Finally, a remote sensing method to accurately identify grassland distribution in southwest China was constructed based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Taking Zhaotong City, a prefecture-level city in Yunnan Province, as an example, a thematic map of grassland distribution with an overall accuracy of 88.21% was obtained using the above method. The quantitative relationship between the groundwater level (GWL) and land subsidence is essential to understand, prevent and control subsidence. This study compares the subsidence due to GWL variation at different locations and aquifer layers during the operation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project Central Route (SNWDP-CR) in China. Sixty-nine synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in Beijing from 2012 to 2017 are obtained to calculate the displacement using the interferometry technique. The results indicate that the subsidence with uplift or mitigation is consistent with groundwater rise or drawdown deceleration. The dynamic time warping (DTW) method is applied to compare the similarity between subsidence and GWL time series waveforms. We find that the similarity between these two activities tends to increase after the SNWDP-CR. The similarity between the subsidence and confined GWL is controlled by the hydrogeological setting. In general, it tends to increase from the upper part to the lower part of the alluvial fan. However, the similarity between the subsidence and unconfined GWL shows irregular pattern due to rainfall interference. The average similarity between the subsidence and GWL at depths of 100–180 m and that at over 250 m is 75% and 64%, respectively, prior to the SNWDP-CR. In contrast, these two values increase to 83% and 81%, respectively, after the SNWDP-CR. This indicates that the impact of deeper aquifers to the subsidence increases after the SNWDP-CR, and the depth of the contributing aquifer is 100–180 m and locally exceeds 250 m. In China's 14th Five-Year Plan, it is necessary to coordinate the promotion of marine ecological protection and prevent environmental risks such as marine oil spills. The illegal discharge of oily waste from ships is an important source of oil spill pollution in the Bohai Sea, and has become an important factor hindering the purification of the marine environment. Because SAR remote sensing is not restricted by light conditions, it can work at night, in heavy fog, overcast and rainy days, and has become one of the important techniques for monitoring oil spills on the sea. AIS can provide real-time and historical position and track information of ships. The combination of SAR and AIS can provide a great help for maritime regulatory authorities to find the source of oil spill pollution. However, China has not yet established a mature and effective oil spill supervision system based on SAR and AIS. This paper proposes a framework for oil spill detection and accountability using the combination of SAR, AIS and boarding inspection, and takes an example of the monitoring and tracking process of illegal oil discharge from a ship in the Bohai Sea. As far as we know, this is the first time that China has used SAR and AIS to identify ships that illegally discharge oily sewage. This work framework can provide a reference for China's maritime agencies to improve the oil spill supervision system during the 14th Five-Year Plan. Forest aboveground biomass (AGB) is of great significance since it represents large carbon storage and may reduce global climate change. However, there are still considerable uncertainties in forest AGB estimates, especially in rugged regions, due to the lack of effective algorithms to remove the effects of topography and the lack of comprehensive comparisons of methods used for estimation. Here, we systematically compare the performance of three sources of remote sensing data used in forest AGB estimation, along with three machine-learning algorithms using extensive field measurements (N = 1058) made in the Khingan Mountains of north-eastern China in 2008. The datasets used were obtained from the LiDAR-based Geoscience Laser Altimeter System onboard the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation satellite (ICESat/GLAS), the optical-based Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and the SAR-based Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR). We show that terrain correction is effective for this mountainous study region and that the combination of terrain-corrected GLAS and PALSAR features with Random Forest regression produces the best results at the plot scale. Including further MODIS-based features added little power for prediction. Based upon the parsimonious data source combination, we created a map of AGB circa 2008 and its uncertainty, which yields a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.82 and a root mean squared error of 16.84 Mg ha−1 when validated with field data. Forest AGB values in our study area were within the range 79.81 ± 16.00 Mg ha−1, ~25% larger than a previous, SAR-based, analysis.
