This article presents information on the Religious Research Association (RRA) 2005 Annual Meeting titled "Congregations, Denominations and Research on Religion: Promoting Cooperation," to be held at the Hyatt Regency in Rochester, New York on November 4-6, 2005. Although the behavioral study of religion now extends far beyond the narrow study of religious organizations, RRA was established, in part, to focus on denominational research. While denominational researchers often collect data to answer practical questions, many academic researchers are unaware that these same data sources could address a broad range of more general theoretical questions. The meeting encourages papers on any topic related to the behavioral study of religion. Examples of possible papers and sessions on denominational data sources includes: denominational Web pages as a source of data; survey data collected by denominations; congregational yearbook data collected by denominations; pitfalls and solutions in working with denominational data; and availability of denominationally collected data.

This article presents information regarding the Fourth World Congress of Rural Sociology which was held jointly with the Ninth European Congress of Rural Sociology in Torun, Poland, August 9-13, 1976. Papers at the congress dealt with the relationship between migration and other factors-socioprofessional mobility, urban poverty, and social conditions of rural youth. The processes of assimilation and adjustment received attention as well. Migration was also a major topic at the meetings of the Rural Sociological Society, held in nonrural New York City on August 26-29, 1976. One session, chaired by Earl Morris was concerned exclusively with migration. Other sessions at the August 30-September 3 meetings of the American Sociological Association included papers dealing with migration as well. Remi Clignet was the organizer of a session on "International and Intranational Migrations." Papers presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science Seminar on Women in Development, held in Mexico City in June 1975 just prior to the World Conference of the International Women's Year, are now available in paperback from the Overseas Development Council.

This article focuses on the Behavioral Approaches to Research in Industrial Relations conference held at Arden House in Harriman, New York in February 1982. Perhaps the most important accomplishment of the conference in its demonstration that little or no useful purpose is served by attempting precisely to fit industrial relations research into separate behavioral and nonbehavioral compartments. The papers presented in the conference might be used as evidence that industrial relations researchers from a variety of disciplines consider their work sufficiently behavioral to qualify for inclusion in such a collection.

This Statement on Practice Research is a work in progress. It emerges out of deliberations from three international conferences on defining and operationalizing practice research. It seeks to capture both a process and outcome in which practitioners, researchers, service users, and educators collectively engage in a negotiated process of inquiry. One of the goals of this form of research is to place equal emphasis on improving practice and improving services. Practice research also seeks to rebalance the power relations in terms of integrating the voices of service users, service providers, service researchers, and instructors preparing future and current service providers. This third statement emerges out of the most recent international conference in New York City (2012) and continues the construction of the social science and social philosophy foundation of practice research. It seeks to expand the dialogue on practice research to include more international voices while also searching for linkages with the evolving process of defining the mixed methods approach to evidence-informed practice. Drawing on the work of Barthes and Wittgenstein, this article presents an argument for taking seriously the widespread sentiment, at the time, that the events of what we have since come to call "9-11" were unspeakable. Central to the article is an analysis of two sharply contrasting responses to the 9-11 events, the Here Is New York photographic exhibition and a symposium by prominent intellectuals in The London Review of Books. The widespread revulsion that greeted such intellectual attempts to make sense of 9-11, the article argues, is not evidence of sentiment clouding reason so much as a refusal to efface a profound otherness by assimilating it to the categories of our comprehension- much like Here Is New York's use of photographs to resist the translation of 9-11 into text. This article focuses on the conference Research and Practice: Bridging the Gap sponsored by the Center for the Study of Social Work Practice to be held on March 8, 1991 in New York. The theme of this conference is to look at the gaps between practice and research valid concerns of each and the ways in which the methodologies of the two cannot be integrated but intertwined to find the kind of answers needed for addressing contemporary problems. Several specific issues were raised in the conference workshops such as doctoral training and research utilization. These and other areas are also worth looking at in a different conceptual framework and have their own myths to be challenged. There is no rule book in social work that gives greater honor to a practitioner or a research professional. The researcher is not to be admired over the practitioner because of a presumed search for truth. Nor is the practitioner more to be admired because of a presumed concern for care because each group makes it own contribution. Skilled caretakers and research scholars are both needed for the advancement of social work. We should not be in a competitive situation but rather one that demands cooperative functioning.
