Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with active metals dispersed atomically have shown great potential in heterogeneous catalysis due to the high atomic utilization and superior selectivity/stability. Synthesis of SACs using carbon-neutral biomass and its components as the feedstocks provides a promising strategy to realize the sustainable and cost-effective SACs preparation as well as the valorization of underused biomass resources. Herein, we begin by describing the general background and status quo of carbon-based SACs derived from biomass. A detailed enumeration of the common biomass feedstocks (e.g., lignin, cellulose, chitosan, etc.) for the SACs preparation is then offered. The interactions between metal atoms and biomass-derived carbon carriers are summarized to give general rules on how to stabilize the atomic metal centers and rationalize porous carbon structures. Furthermore, the widespread adoption of catalysts in diverse domains (e.g., chemocatalysis, electrocatalysis and photocatalysis, etc.) is comprehensively introduced. The structure-property relationships and the underlying catalytic mechanisms are also addressed, including the influences of metal sites on the activity and stability, and the impact of the unique structure of single-atom centers modulated by metal/biomass feedstocks interactions on catalytic activity and selectivity. Finally, we end this review with a look into the remaining challenges and future perspectives of biomass-based SACs. Introduction: Persistent endodontic infections (PEIs) mediated by bacterial biofilm mainly cause persistent periapical inflammation, resulting in recurrent periapical abscesses and progressive bone destruction. However, conventional root canal disinfectants are highly damaging to the tooth and periodontal tissue and ineffective in treating persistent root canal infections. Antimicrobial materials that are biocompatible with apical tissues and can eliminate PEIs-associated bacteria are urgently needed., Methods: Here, ε-poly (L-lysine) derived carbon quantum dots (PL-CQDs) are fabricated using pyrolysis to remove PEIs-associated bacterial biofilms., Results: Due to their ultra-small size, high positive charge, and active reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation capacity, PL-CQDs exhibit highly effective antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis ( E. faecalis ), which is greatly dependent on PL-CQDs concentrations. 100 µg/mL PL-CQDs could kill E. faecalis in 5 min. Importantly, PL-CQDs effectively achieved a reduction of biofilms in the isolated teeth model, disrupting the dense structure of biofilms. Lignocellulosic biomass exhibits a promising potential for production of carbon materials. Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon quantum dots (N,P-CQDs) were fabricated via (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 assisted hydrothermal treatment of cellulose pulp fibers. The as-prepared N,P-CQDs were characterized by HRTEM, FTIR, fluorescence and UV-vis, and then incorporated into g-C 3 N 4 (CN) through sonication and liquid deposition, forming N,P-CQDs/sonication treated g-C 3 N 4 (C-SCN) composites, which were then explored as photocatalysts. The photocatalytic ability of C-SCN towards model lignin was further analyzed. The results showed that, the fluorescence intensity and photoluminescence performance of N,P-CQDs were much higher than that of CQDs; the heterojunction was successfully constructed between the composites of N,P-CQDs and SCN; the incorporation of N,P-CQDs enhanced the visible light absorption, but reduced the band gap of the composite heterojunction; the resultant photocatalysts exhibited a good photocatalytic ability of model lignin via catalyze the fracture of β-O-4' ether bond and CC bond, i.e., the photocatalytic degradation ratio reached up to 95.5 %; and the photocatalytic reaction generated some valuable organics such as phenyl formate, benzaldehyde, and benzoic acid. Nano-lignin presents great potential in advanced carbon materials preparation since it integrates the advantages of nanomaterials as well the preferable properties of lignin (e.g. high carbon content and highly aromatic structure). Herein, lignin-derived carbon nanosphere supported Pd catalysts (Pd@LCNS) were prepared via a two-step carbonization of Pd 2+ adsorbed lignin nanospheres (LNS) and applied in vanillin hydrodeoxygenation. The effect lignin heterogeneity on the synthesis of Pd@LCNS as well as its catalytic performance was further investigated through the synthesis of Pd@LCNS using three lignin fractions with different molecular weight. The results showed that the three Pd@LCNSs exhibited significant differences in the morphology of both carbon support and Pd nanoparticles. Pd@LCNS-3 prepared from high molecular weight lignin fraction (L-3) presented stable carbon nanosphere support with the smallest particle size (∼150 nm) and the highest Pd loading amount (3.78 %) with the smallest Pd NPs size (∼1.6 nm). Therefore, Pd@LCNS-3 displayed superior catalytic activity for vanillin hydrodeoxygenation (99.34 % of vanillin conversion and 99.47 % of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol selectivity) at 90 °C without H 2 . Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as a promising subclass of optical nanomaterials with versatile functions in multimodal biosensing. Howbeit the rapid, reliable and reproducible fabrication of multicolor CDs from renewable lignin with unique groups (e.g., -OCH 3 , -OH and -COOH) and alterable moieties (e.g., β-O-4, phenylpropanoid structure) remains challenging due to difficult-to-control molecular behavior. Herein we proposed a scalable acid-reagent strategy to engineer a family of heteroatom-doped multicolor lignin carbon dots (LCDs) that are functioned as the bimodal fluorescent off-on sensing of metal-ions and glutathione (GSH). Benefiting from the modifiable photophysical structure via heteroatom-doping (N, S, W, P and B), the multicolor LCDs (blue, green and yellow) with a controllable size distribution of 2.06-2.22 nm deliver the sensing competences to fluorometric probing the distinctive metal-ion systems (Fe 3+ , Al 3+ and Cu 2+ ) under a broad response interval (0-500 μM) with excellent sensitivity and limit of detection (LOD, 0.45-3.90 μM). Meanwhile, we found that the addition of GSH can efficiently restore the fluorescence of LCDs by forming a stable Fe 3+ -GSH complex with a LOD of 0.97 μM. Water waves are viable low-carbon and renewable sources of power that can be optionally combined with triboelectric nanogeneration (TENG). Herein, we report on the synthesis of a TENG device based on green wrinkled paper tribolayers (W-TENG) assembled in grids (G-TENG) with channels that enable contact-separation modes involving metal balls that roll in phase with the waves. The paper's wrinkle wavelength and amplitude were adjusted by using a crepe blade at a given angle with respect to a drying cylinder, as well as the speed and torque. Polar hierarchical superhydrophobic cellulose micro/nanostructures, proposed as positive tribolayers with enhanced contact area and triboelectric density. The negative (biodegradable) tribolayers were prepared by electrospinning aqueous suspensions of polyvinyl alcohol and poly (ethylene oxide) reinforced with cellulose nanofibers. The charge transfer by the W-TENG reached up to 40 nC in air and retained 27 nC under 85 % relative humidity, ~5 and 7 times higher than those measured in planar TENG counterparts. A G-TENG array charging time (100-μF capacitor) of ~188 s was measured when the voltage of the capacitor raised to ~1.5 V. The conversion of renewable lignin with low-cost and high carbon content properties into porous carbon materials for supercapacitor applications has caught considerable interest. Herein, two dimensional lignin-derived carbon nanosheets (N-LHPC) with hierarchically porous structures were facilely synthesized via a novel metal-lignin assembly strategy and their performances for supercapacitor applications were investigated. During the carbonization process, the uniformly distributed Zn facilitates the coordinating development of micropores structure and the generated MgO embedded in the carbon matrix acts as a template to produce mesoporous structure after acid washing. Moreover, the melamine addition promotes the development of mesopores by formation of lamellae structure and realizes the N doping in the carbon materials. Therefore, the obtained N-LHPC presents an excellent specific capacitance of 235.75 F/g at 0.5 A/g owing to its hierarchical pore structure as well as the N/O functional groups. Moreover, at the power density of 450 W/kg, the N-LHPC achieves a maximum energy density of 14.75 Wh/kg, showing great application potential in energy storage. Fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared by an economical, green, and single-step procedure with the assistance of microwave heating of urea with bagasse (SCB), cellulose (C), or carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The prepared CQDs were characterized using a series of spectroscopic techniques, and they had petite size, intense absorption in the UV, and excitation wavelength-dependent fluorescence. The prepared CQDs were used for Pb(II) adsorption from an aqueous solution. The removal efficiency percentages (R %) were 99.16, 96.36, and 98.48% for QCMC, QC, and QSCB, respectively. The findings validated the efficiency of CQDs synthesized from CMC, cellulose, and SCB as excellent materials for further utilization in the environmental fields of wastewater pollution detection, adsorption, and chemical sensing applications. The kinetics and isotherms studied found that all CQDs isotherms fit well with the Langmuir model than Freundlich and Temkin models. Improving the tailorability of hydrochar synthesis is an effective way to enhance its performance and utilization efficiency. In this study, the growth rate, morphology, and molecular structure of hydrochar were controlled by regulating the pH and temperature of the hydrothermal carbonization process. Growth process analysis indicates that hydrochar has three growth periods: induction, rapid, and stable growth periods. It is mainly controlled by 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which is formed by converting glucose and its transformation products. The regulation of acid can significantly shorten the induction period of hydrochar, even under low-temperature conditions (<180℃), and increase the growth rate of hydrochar. However, the degree of hydrochar adhesion varies: the lower the temperature, the greater the degree of its adhesion. Molecular structural analysis demonstrates that hydrochar mainly consists of furan structural domains and aromatic clusters, and its surface is rich in oxygen-containing functional groups. The degree at which hydrochar was aromatized was improved by increasing the reaction temperature (160-220℃); whereas the regulation of acid reduced it and increased the content of oxygen-containing functional groups on the hydrochar surface. Microwave technology is utilized to prepare porous carbon from the chili straw pyrolysis residue in this study. As the pyrolysis temperature increases, the thermal stability of biochar is higher. The carbon speciation of the porous carbon PC500 is closest to that of graphite, and its inorganic-C reaches to 51.21%. Notably, the specific surface area of the activated porous carbon increases with increasing pyrolysis temperature, with a maximum value of 2768.52 m 2 /g for PC500. Further testing of the electrochemical properties of the porous carbon, PC500 possesses a high specific capacitance of 352F/g at 1 A/g while that of conventional heating is only 226.1F/g. The porous carbon prepared by microwave heating has better electrical properties compared to conventional heating, and the biochar obtained at higher pyrolysis temperature has a richer pore structure after activation., (Copyright © 2022. In this work, nitrogen and phosphorus dual-doped alkali lignin-based carbon microspheres (MLCM) were prepared by pre-oxidation and carbonization of ionic liquid ([Mmim]DMP) -lignin solution and used as green-based supercapacitor electrode materials. Compared with the directly carbonized alkali lignin carbon (LC), MLCM had a spherical structure with higher specific surface area (938.1 m 2 /g) and pore volume (0.64 cm 3 /g). Moreover, MLCM materials showed superior electrochemical performance. In the 1 mol/L H 2 SO 4 electrolyte system, MLCM presented the highest specific capacitance of 338.2F/g at a current density of 0.8 A/g. Furthermore, MLCM was used as a positive and negative electrode material to assemble a symmetrical supercapacitor. The resultant device maintained excellent cycle stability after 5000 times of charging and discharging process at 2 A/g. Lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors are examples of energy storage technologies that have a lot of promise in a variety of applications. Herein, NiO-porous carbon composites were prepared by a green and cost-effective facile synthesis route from banana peel waste materials. The surface morphology and chemical composition of the NiO-porous carbon composite were investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX). The prepared samples were also described through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and surface area measurements. The electrochemical behavior of prepared materials was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance (EIS) to test their applicable suitability as supercapacitor electrode. PC-NiO (3) composite exhibits a remarkable specific capacitance of 811 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. The specific capacitance of PC-NiO (3) is 5.3 times more than that of PC material at 1.0 A/g. Furthermore, the PC-NiO (3) composite material still exhibits a specific capacitance of 780 F/g at 5.0 A/g, high rate capability of 84.55% retention at a high current density of 10.0 A/g and superior cycle stability at 1000 cycles. Based on its high specific capacitance, the NiO-porous carbon nanocomposite is one of the most promising electrode materials for supercapacitors, according to the above results., (© 2021. N 2 O is the most significant anthropogenic greenhouse gas, which cause the ozone depletion. Hence, the room temperature detection of N 2 O is highly desirable. In this work, The TCN(II)-KOH-rGO/CF modified electrode was successfully fabricated by drop coating method. The synthesized electrode was successfully characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR and XRD. The sensor electrode was used to detect different N 2 O concentration in flow conditions at room temperature. TCN(II)-KOH-rGO/CF modified electrode showed high sensitivity towards N 2 O, a wide range from 1ppm to 16 ppm and low detection of 1 ppm N 2 O were achieved for the TCN(II)-KOH-rGO/CF modified electrode. The limit of detection and the response towards this nitrogen oxide is competitive to other sensing methods. In addition, the sensitivity of the electrochemical sensor electrode was compared with the online Gas Chromatography. Additionally, the selectivity of the working electrode was analyzed and specified. The working electrode stability was analyzed for more than 30 days shows good stability. The fabricated TCN(II)-KOH-rGO/CF electrode is easier to prepare to get excellent analytical performance towards N 2 O. Lignin is recommended to a tempting alternative precursor of petroleum for fabricating carbon nanofibers (CNFs) due to its high carbon content, low-cost and renewable resources. However, the property of lignin-based carbon nanofibers (LCNFs) is inferior owing to the heterogeneity and 3D-network structure of lignin, which hinders its application in supercapacitors. The latest developments in fractionation technology have shown great potential for overcoming the aforementioned shortcomings. However, most of fractionation methods mainly rely on expensive chemicals and complex reaction process, such as enzymes, multiple solvents, membranes, and dialysis tubes. Herein, we proposed a controllable and effective strategy to fractionate lignin by only changing the ratio of ethanol/water (V/V) as mixture solvent. This gradient extraction method effectively removed the part of lignin with small molecular and branching structure, thus selectively getting the fractionated lignin with high molecular weight, narrow polydispersity index, and good linear structure. Fortunately, when the ratio of ethanol/water was 6:4, the corresponding LCNFs (LCNFs-L60) was obtained with large specific surface area, independent filamentous morphology networks and excellent electrochemical property. Biobased N-doped hierarchically porous carbon (N-HPC) electrodes were successfully prepared by utilizing marine crustacean derivatives and chitin nanofibers (ChNF), as versatile bio-templates of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) to form ChNF@ZIF-8 nanocomposites, followed by a subsequent carbonization process. The ZIF-8 nanoparticles were in situ synthesized on ChNF surfaces to avoid fragmentation for fabricating hierarchically porous carbon structure (N-HPC), which is efficiently doped with rich nitrogen content that originates in ChNF and ZIF-8. The results show that N-HPC electrodes demonstrate improved electrochemical performance and the constructed symmetric supercapacitor assembled with N-HPC exhibits enhanced capacitive performance of specific capacity (128.5 F·g -1 at 0.2 A·g -1 ) and excellent electrochemical stability even after 5000 cycles. To achieve a rapid and facile quantitative evaluation of Sudan I illegally added in ketchup, fluorescent carbon quantum dots with excellent stability in acidic environments are required as the actual pH value of ketchup is close to 4.0. In this paper, we developed a green approach to prepare sulfur-doped carbon quantum dots (SCQDs) via hydrothermal treatment of lignin, isolated from pre-hydrolysis liquor, in sulfuric acid solution. The resultant SCQDs from lignin possessed sulfur-containing groups, which exhibited excellent fluorescence with a quantum yield up to 13.5% and good stability in acidic environments with a wide pH range of 0-5.0. Therefore, the SCQDs were successfully employed as a sensor to detect Sudan I in acidic solutions with excellent selectivity and sensitivity. The linear range for Sudan I was 0-40 μM, while the limit of detection was 0.12 μM. In addition, the fluorescent indicator paper functionalized with SCQDs also showed outstanding selectivity to Sudan I. The proposed SCQD sensing system not only displayed application potential for quantitative evaluation of Sudan I dye in practical samples, but also provided a way to convert lignin-based waste into highly valued nanoscale materials.

As one type of the solid wastes, the increasing contamination of waste cellulose diacetate (CDA) from discarded cigarette filters is a growing problem worldwide. Finding a facile and suitable approach to convert the CDA into value-added materials is of significance. Herein, we reported a green, simple and effective method to reuse CDA as precursor for preparing fluorescence N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) via one-pot hydrothermal carbonization in aqueous solution with low-cost ammonium hydroxide as the passivation agent. The N-CDs showed a quantum yield up to 22.4% with a maximum emission at 415 nm and excitation at 320 nm. Interestingly, the N-CDs exhibited high selectivity toward tetracycline (TC) as their fluorescence was obviously quenched by TC as a result of inner-filter effect. A linear relationship was fabricated over concentration range of 0-80 μM with a detection limit of 0.06 μM. Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) is becoming popular in the field of anti-counterfeiting material due to its favorable biocompatibility, renewability, and easy modification properties, which give it great potentials as carrier of carbon quantum dots (CQDs). Herein, we report an effective method to fabricate Yb and Er doped CQDs grafted onto dialdehyde NFC (DANFC). Owning to special rheological properties of NFC, a waterborne fluorescent dual anti-counterfeiting ink was rationally designed and successfully prepared by adding NFC to waterborne ink to form a stable network structure and increase the thixotropy and yield stress. The resulting CQDs exhibited both photoluminescence (PL) and up-conversion luminescence (UCPL), emitting blue and green fluorescence at excitation wavelengths of 370 and 980 nm, respectively. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely used for sterilization due to their broad-spectrum bactericidal properties. However, there exist the problems of premature releasing and accumulative toxicity when free AgNPs are applied. This study proposed a one-pot hydrothermal strategy to synthesize carbon spheres immobilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@CS). The synthesis involves with silver ammonia solution as Ag precursor, and corn stalk as green reducing agent and carbon precursor. Furthermore, AgNPs@CS was anchored by cellulose nanofibers (CNF) to obtain the antibacterial composite paper. The obtained CNF/AgNPs@CS paper exhibited superior antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus. Notably, the accumulative release rate of AgNPs from AgNPs@CS was 10.2% in 9 days, while that from CNF/AgNPs@CS paper was only 6.7% due to the anchoring effect of both CS and CNF, which was low for avoiding the cumulative toxicity problem. In addition, the mechanical and barrier properties of CNF/AgNPs@CS paper were also improved by 29.4% (tensile index), 2.7% (tear index), 7.4% (burst index), 10% (folding endurance), 0.8% (water vapor transmission) and 9.4% (oxygen transmission rate), respectively. We reported a new approach for development of lignin-based carbon nanofibers (LCNFs) from two lignin-derived bio-oil (LB) obtained from catalytic depolymerization reaction combined with the organic solvent gradient separation process (including ethanol-soluble LB (EL) and tetrahydrofuran-soluble LB (TL)). This approach was particularly unique and translatable as it uses small molecule TL with high reactivity and low heterogeneity obtained via stalk lignin depolymerization to produce good morphologies and mechanical performances of LCNFs mixed with polyacrylonitrile under 85% high replacement rates. We first detailed characterization studies such as 2D-HSQC NMR, 31 P NMR, FT-IR, GPC, TGA and DSC were conducted to understand the properties of EL and TL. Catalytic conversion of xylose and the hemicellulose fraction of waste biomass to furfural is important for the valorization of waste lignocellulose. Here, a clean and efficient catalytic system consisting of sulfonated carbon microspheres catalysts and γ-valerolactone was developed for the upgrading of xylose and waste lignocellulose to the furfural in one-pot. Sulfonated carbon microspheres (CCoS) with Brønsted and Lewis acid sites were prepared to yield furfural. The mesoporous structures were facilitated by introduction of Co element in xylose hydrothermal process, and the density of Brønsted acid sites were improved by the sulfonation. The furfural yield from xylose reached 75.12% using CCoS as catalyst at 170 °C for 30 min in a γ-valerolactone/water (17/3 v/v) solvent. As typical Brønsted acid, the SO 3 H groups on the surface of CCoS catalyst is essential for catalytic dehydration xylose to furfural. Additionally, the mesoporous structures of CCoS improved the mass transfer in the furfural production process. The catalytic system was applied in the conversion of real biomass (including corncob, corn straw and Eucalyptus sawdust) to evaluate the possibility of application. These three biomass species all reached excellent furfural yields, which were more than 70%. A challenge of today's industry is to transform low-value side products into more value-added materials. The acid-catalyzed conversion of hemi(cellulose) to platform chemicals in green chemical/fuel production and biorefinery yields large formation of insoluble byproduct called humin. Herein, humin obtained from dehydration of glucose was transformed into a novel class of effective carbonaceous solid acid catalyst for the first time via low-temperature pyrolysis followed by sulfonation. A range of preparation conditions were investigated, and the structure-function relationships of the resulting catalysts were also discussed based on the analysis of structure and composition. Comparing with the glucose-derived carbon catalyst, the humin-derived catalyst has substantially larger surface area and higher SO 3 H density, which enable it to display higher catalytic activity and efficiency not only in esterification of levulinic acid and n-butanol (yield = 95.0%, 373 K), but also in hydroxyalkylation/alkylation of 2-methylfuran and furfural (yield = 64.2%, 323 K). Additionally, the catalyst could be repeatedly employed for at least four cycles without obvious deactivation, exhibiting good reusability. Pre-hydrolysis liquor (PHL) from the kraft-based dissolving pulp process contains large amounts of hemicelluloses, which is usually treated as an effluent and further efforts have to be involved to eliminate the pollution disposal. However, the hemicelluloses-rich PHL is a promising candidate for the production of carbon microspheres via hydrothermal carbonization. The yield of the carbon microspheres directly derived from the hydrothermal carbonization of the hemicelluloses-rich PHL (22.1%) was almost twice than that from xylose (13.1%). Furthermore, sulfuric acid and the lignin in the PHL could significantly improve the yield and change the size of the carbon microspheres obtained from the PHL. Additionally, the activated carbon microspheres functionalized with acrylic acid showed improved adsorption capacities for Pb(II) ion (273.4 mg/g) and methylene blue (701.3 mg/g). Porous carbon electrodes have emerged as important cathode materials for metal-air battery systems. However, most approaches for fabricating porous carbon electrodes from biomass are highly energy inefficient as they require the breaking down of the biomass and its subsequent reconstitution into powder-like carbon. Here, enzymes are explored to effectively hydrolyze the partial cellulose in bulk raw wood to form a large number of nanopores, which helps to maximally expose the inner parts of the raw wood to sufficiently dope nitrogen onto the carbon skeletons during the subsequent pyrolysis process. The resulting carbons exhibit excellent catalytic activity with respect to the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions. As-fabricated cellulose-digested, carbonized wood plates are mechanically strong, have high conductivity, and contain a crosslinked network and natural ion-transport channels and can be employed directly as metal-free electrodes without carbon paper, polymer binders, or carbon black. When used as metal-free cathodes in zinc-air batteries, they result in a specific capacity of 801 mA h g -1 and an energy density of 955 W h kg -1 with the long-term stability of the batteries being as high as 110 h. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted considerable interests because of their unique luminescence properties and promising applications in bioimaging. Lignin hybridized CQDs (L-CQDs) are facilely synthesized by one-pot hydrothermal method with different molar ratios of citric acid and ethanediamine. The morphology and chemical structures of L-CQDs are investigated by TEM, FT-IR, XPS, 2D-HSQC NMR spectra. The resultant L-CQDs with near spherical morphology are less than 10 nm in diameter, which are essentially composed of main interunit linkages and aromatic ring structures. The L-CQDs exhibit the excitation-dependent photoluminescence behavior with emission maximum ranging from 454 to 535 nm under excitation at 375-460 nm. The maximum emission of the L-CQDs red-shift to a longer wavelength with a decrease in intensity as the excitation wavelengths are gradually increased. L-CQDs show the low cytotoxicity and good cellular biocompatibility, demonstrating the great potential of the L-CQDs for bioimaging applications., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. The generation of pseudo-lignin as byproduct during the lignocellulose acidic pretreatment has been proposed for many years. However, the detailed formation mechanism is still unclear. Moreover, there is a lack of understanding in the initial reaction during the formation of humins (byproducts in furfural production) and acid-induced hydrothermal carbon (carbon material). In this work, the initial formation of these three substances were investigated. We first found the common feature of their formation process was that carbohydrate-hydrolyzed compounds could form black polymers by condensing in acidic media, but the difference was dependent on the reaction degree. Furthermore, the results revealed that oxidation was an accelerator for condensations during producing black polymers because oxidized compounds could enhance the acidity of the reaction system. However, condensations of oxidized compounds were more difficult to proceed. Meanwhile, during the initial stage, the dominating pathway was that furfural condensed with itself and isomerized xylose via aldol-condensation.

Iron oxide particle-decorated, hollow, carbon nanofibers (HCNFs), with poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) solution as the core and acetic acid lignin as the shell, were manufactured using a coaxial electrospinning technique, using iron(III) acetylacetonate as the iron oxide-precursor additive in the shell. The fabricated HCNFs exhibited a high specific capacitance of 121 F·g -1 at 0.5 A·g -1 , which was 2.18-fold that of solid electrospun nanofibers under the same conditions. The samples also possessed a superior cycling life, with a 90% retention rate after 1000 cycles in 1 M sodium sulfite. In this system, HCNFs exhibited high surface areas, as the result of hollow structures and producing capacitance improvement, while iron oxide particles enhanced electrochemical properties via reversible redox reactions. To overcome the bottlenecks of high cost and low production yields that restrict the commercial production of microalgae biodiesel, the use of xylose was evaluate by Scenedesmus quadricauda FACHB-1297, which was shown to be capable of mixotrophic and heterotrophic growth and lipid production on xylose, rich in the waste streams from pulp and paper industry, with increases in lipid productivities of 35.8-fold (mixotrophic) and 9.2-fold (heterotrophic) in comparison to photoautotrophic lipid yields. Five doses of xylose were tested to determine the effects and mechanisms of the carbon source on microalgae in mixotrophic mode. At the optimal xylose dosage of 4 g/L, the highest lipid content (38.61%) and productivity (139.55 mg/L/d) were achieved besides maximum biomass productivity (361.4 mg/L/d), nutrient removal efficiency of 68.4% (nitrogen), 97.2% (phosphorus) and 35.2% (xylose). Although luminescence of water lower in energy than the Cerenkov-light threshold during proton and carbon-ion irradiation has been found, the phenomenon has not yet been implemented for Monte Carlo simulations. The results provided by the simulations lead to misunderstandings of the physical phenomenon in optical imaging of water during proton and carbon-ion irradiation. To solve the problems, as well as to clarify the light production of the luminescence of water, we modified a Monte Carlo simulation code to include the light production from the luminescence of water and compared them with the experimental results of luminescence imaging of water. We used GEANT4 for the simulation of emitted light from water during proton and carbon-ion irradiation. We used the light production from the luminescence of water using the scintillation process in GEANT4 while those of Cerenkov light from the secondary electrons and prompt gamma photons in water were also included in the simulation. The modified simulation results showed similar depth profiles to those of the measured data for both proton and carbon-ion. When the light production of 0.1 photons/MeV was used for the luminescence of water in the simulation, the simulated depth profiles showed the best match to those of the measured results for both the proton and carbon-ion compared with those used for smaller and larger numbers of photons/MeV. We could successively obtain the simulated depth profiles that were basically the same as the experimental data by using GEANT4 when we assumed the light production by the luminescence of water. Our results confirmed that the inclusion of the luminescence of water in Monte Carlo simulation is indispensable to calculate the precise light distribution in water during irradiation of proton and carbon-ion.

The aim of this work was to study the solid waste (manure) produced by catfish as a potential feedstock for the production of lactic acid (LA) via fermentation. The solid waste contains high levels of both carbohydrates and nutrients that are sufficient for LA bacteria. Simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF) was applied using enzyme and Lactobacillus pentosus, and different loadings of enzyme and solid waste were tested. Results showed LA concentrations of 35.7 g/L were obtained at 15% solids content of catfish waste. Because of the high nutrient content in the fish waste, it could also be used as supplementary substrate for nitrogen and carbon sources with other lignocellulosic materials. A combined feedstock of catfish waste and paper mill sludge was tested, increasing the final LA concentration to 43.1 g/L at 12% solids loading. The catfish waste was shown to be a potential feedstock to provide both carbon and nutrients for LA production, suggesting its use as a sole substrate or in combination with other lignocellulosic materials.

Producing hierarchical porous N-doped carbon from renewable biomass is an essential and sustainable way for future electrochemical energy storage. Herein we cost-efficiently synthesized N-doped porous carbon from renewable cellulose by using urea as a low-cost N source, without any activation process. The as-prepared N-doped porous carbon (N-doped PC) had a hierarchical porous structure with abundant macropores, mesopores and micropores. The doping N resulted in more disordered structure, and the doping N content in N-doped PC could be easily tunable (0.68-7.64%). The doping N functionalities could significantly improve the supercapacitance of porous carbon, and even a little amount of doping N (e.g. 0.68%) could remarkably improve the supercapacitance. The as-prepared N-doped PC with a specific surface area of 471.7m 2 g -1 exhibited a high specific capacitance of 193Fg -1 and a better rate capability, as well as an outstanding cycling stability with a capacitance retention of 107% after 5000 cycles. The mutual interactions among the consortium constructed by four indigenous bacteria and five inter-kingdom fusants and the effects of nitrogen and carbon supplementations on lignin degradation and laccase activity were investigated. Analyzed by Plackett-Burman and central composite design, the microbial consortium were optimized, Bacillus sp. (B) and PE-9 and Pseudomonas putida (Pp) and PE-9 had significant interactions on lignin degradation based on a 5% level of significance. The nitrogen and carbon supplementations played an important role in lignin degradation and laccase production. The ultimate lignin degradation efficiency of 96.0% and laccase activity of 268U/L were obtained with 0.5g/L of ammonium chloride and 2g/L of sucrose. Results suggested that a stable and effective microbial consortium in alkalescent conditions was successfully achieved through the introduction of fusants, which was significant for its industrial application., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Sulfonated modification of cotton linter and its novel application as adsorbent for Pb(2+) in effluent were investigated. Results show that sulfonated cotton linter (SCL) has strong adsorbability for Pb(2+), more than 85% of Pb(2+) can be removed at lower Pb(2+) concentration (<20 mg/L). Its adsorbability for Pb(2+) is related to effluent pH, temperature, and initial Pb(2+) concentration. The adsorption process can reach equilibrium within 8 min, which can be described through the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherm is closely fitted with the Temkin isotherm model, which suggests that the adsorption of Pb(2+) on SCL can be regarded as chemical adsorption. The adsorption process of Pb(2+) on SCL is non-spontaneous and endothermic, based on the value of Gibbs free energy and enthalpy. Formaldehyde was used as a polymerization agent to perform hydrothermal carbonization of black liquor for solid fuel production from 220 to 285°C. Compared to hydrochar prepared without formaldehyde, hydrochar produced in the presence of a 2.8wt.% formaldehyde solution (hydrochar-F) had 1.27-2.13 times higher yield, 1.02-1.36 times higher heating value (HHV), 1.20-2.31 times higher C recovery efficiency, 1.20-2.44 times higher total energy recovery efficiency, 0.51-0.64 times lower sulfur content, and 0.48-0.89 times lower ash content. The HHV of hydrochar-Fs ranged from 2.2×10(4) to 3.0×10(4)kJ/kg, while the HHV of hydrochar-F produced at 285°C was 1.90 times greater than that of the raw material (black liquor solid).
