We propose a printed 384‐well microtiter paper‐based fluorescent chemosensor array device (384‐well microtiter PCAD) to simultaneously categorize and discriminate saccharides and sulfur‐containing amino acids for food analysis. The 384‐well microtiter PCAD requiring 1 μL/4 mm2 of each well can allow high‐throughput sensing. The device embedded with self‐assembled fluorescence chemosensors displayed a fingerprint‐like response pattern for targets, the image of which was rapidly captured by a portable digital camera. Indeed, the paper‐based chemosensor array system combined with imaging analysis and pattern recognition techniques not only successfully categorized saccharides and sulfur‐containing amino acids but also classified mono‐ and disaccharide groups. Furthermore, the quantitative detectability of the printed device was revealed by a spike and recovery test for fructose and glutathione in a diluted freshly made tomato juice. We believe that the 384‐well microtiter PCAD using the imaging analysis system will be a powerful sensor for multi‐analytes at several categorized groups in real samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The composite systems can be non-uniquely decomposed into parts (subsystems). Not all decompositions (structures) of a composite system are equally physically relevant. In this paper we answer on theoretical ground why it may be so. We consider a pair of mutually un-coupled modes in the phase space representation that are subjected to the independent quantum amplitude damping channels. By investigating asymptotic dynamics of the degrees of freedom, we find that the environment is responsible for the structures non-equivalence. In this paper, we follow up on the studies developed by Kovalevsky (Comput Vis Graph Image Process 46:141-161, ) and Kenmochi et al. (Comput Vis Image Underst 71:281-293, ), which defined a continuous analog for a 4-dimensional digital object. Abstract: Transmission sources used for image attenuation correction, allowing image quantification, are collimated to reduce scatter. We propose the same effect can be achieved for an uncollimated source by increasing source to patient distance. The aim was to compare planar image performance characteristics and absorbed doses of uncollimated and collimated radioactive printed paper transmission sources. The scatter contribution to the uncollimated 99mTc source data was evaluated for different combinations of detector phantom distance, detector source distance and phantom source distance. Measurements were performed by increasing the Lucite phantom thickness in 1cm steps to 20 cm. Spatial resolution, detection efficiency and entrance absorbed dose rate were measured for the uncollimated and collimated transmission source images. Results derived from the energy spectra, obtained with the uncollimated transmission source indicate that scatter contribution increases with decreasing detector source distance. The scatter component in the uncollimated transmission images (detector source distances≥60cm; phantom source distances≥40cm) was comparable to that obtained with collimated transmission images. Attenuation coefficients obtained compared well (0.168cm−1 vs. 0.171cm−1). The full widths at half maxima differed by less than 0.9mm. The detection efficiency of the uncollimated source was 2.5 times higher than obtained with the collimated source. The entrance absorbed dose obtained from an uncollimated source was 3.75 times larger than that obtained from the collimated source. An uncollimated transmission source (detector source distance≥60cm) results in acceptable image characteristics and presents a low cost, low dose, high efficiency option for transmission imaging. Abstract: This paper presents a novel algorithm for computing graph edit distance (GED) in image categorization. This algorithm is purely structural, i.e., it needs only connectivity structure of the graph and does not draw on node or edge attributes. There are two major contributions: (1) Introducing edge direction histogram (EDH) to characterize shape features of images. It is shown that GED can be employed as distance of EDHs. This algorithm is completely independent on cost function which is difficult to be defined exactly. (2) Computing distance of EDHs with earth mover distance (EMD) which takes neighborhood bins into account so as to compute distance of EDHs correctly. A set of experiments demonstrate that the newly presented algorithm is available for classifying and clustering images and is immune to the planar rotation of images. Compared with GED from spectral seriation, our algorithm can capture the structure change of graphs better and consume 12.79% time used by the former one. The average classification rate is 5% and average clustering rate is 25% higher than the spectral seriation method. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper presents an integrated color imaging system for taking images in extremely high dynamic range scenes. The system first fuses several differently exposed raw images to acquire more intensity information. The effective dynamic range of the image raw data can be extended to 256 times ~five differently exposed images are fused. Then it runs edge detection iterations to extract the image details in different luminance levels. The proposed tone reproduction algorithm equalizes the histogram of the extracted fine edges which tends to assign larger dynamic range for highly populated regions. Finally, the local contrast enhancement is performed to further refine the image details. Paper, mainly constituted of cellulose fibres, often contains mineral fillers. These fillers increase some of the properties of the paper (whiteness, printability, etc.) and are cheaper than the cellulose fibres. Nevertheless, the fillers reduce the mechanical properties of the sheet. Paper presents an anisotropy corresponding to three main directions. This anisotropy characterises the sheet mechanical properties, structure and filler distribution. Analyses of the cross section of the paper sheet with a low-vacuum scanning electron microscope with an energy dispersive spectrometer analysis module can show this distribution. The procedure developed consists in analysing discrete profiles to build the mean profile known as filler Z-distribution for each of the fillers. To develop this method, problems such as determination of the surface points, the number of points to analyse to define a cross section profile and the time required for the test, have been solved. Paper is sensitive to electron irradiation. In order to avoid deterioration of the material and to obtain satisfactory results, the time span for analyses is restricted to 40 s with a 12 kV electron beam accelerating voltage. Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine the diffusion cloud size and thus to determine the number of points that constitute a profile. The samples are gold sputtered and, with the aid of backscattered imaging, the coated surface allows determination of the sample surface points. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Digital image processing techniques have been implemented in order to determine whether the same type of paper was used in a number of folios from a sketchbook attributed to Van Dyck. Digital filtering on images of contact β-radiographs showed that all but one of the folios analysed exhibited a very similar pattern of horizontal lines, suggesting that the paper used derived from the same mould.
