In the sixteenth century in Valencia, Spain, Juan Lorenzo Palmireno wrote self-help manuals aimed at the 'literate country lad of slender means and few connections who plans to better his lot by moving to the city', in the words of Richard Preto-Rodas. In Estudioso de aldea (1571) and its sequel El estudioso cortesano (1573), Palmireno guides his rustic reader in the art of self-fashioning and the presentation of a polished image, in speaking well to prosper in his urban milieu. The success of his books provides a historical, real-life connection to the struggles of many literary characters of the period, including Sancho Panza's social-climbing ambitions, pícaros and pseudo-pícaros, courtiers and would-be courtiers. Today, the pragmatic objective to articulate clearly and project an image of culture, sophistication and clear thinking dovetails with students' aims with their university education. At a time of crisis in the humanities, with student debt making US academia increasingly vocational, convincing students of the importance of studying Early Modern Spanish literature can be challenging. Palmireno's manuals are immediately relatable given the parallels to students' educational goals and views on the purpose of a liberal arts education, and they give historical context to the 'great works' of Golden Age Spanish literature. This article focuses on the incidence related to civil disobedience in the book "The Pickwick Papers" by Charles Dickens. In chapter 22 of the book, the character of Pickwick mistakenly enters the wrong room in a hotel and encounters a woman. In chapter 24, Pickwick's traveling companion Magnus introduces him to his betrothed, Miss Witherfield, who turns out to be same lady he had encountered the night before. The later chapters explore Pickwick's encounter with the law and civil disobedience.

The character created by Gilman is described as wild and bestial and the use of imagery relating to cats is discussed. The use of animal references to communicate ideas about gender is also explored.

The article examines the allegorical significance of the characters of Henry James' novel "The Aspern Papers." The use of bordereau by James assumes the appearance of the most popular bordereau in French history. In his preface, James admits that the conditions in his novella was suggested to him by the death of Jane Clairmont, the mother of Lord Byron's daughter Allegra. The character of Julianna was based on Clairmont. The plot of the novel does not focus on the sensational aspects of the relationship between Byron and Clairmont.

Over the last fifteen years scholarship on postcolonial literatures has increasingly turned to readers as the focus of empirical study. While such research has helped make visible the agency of postcolonial readers in global literary exchanges, it has tended to overlook the many ways in which postcolonial subjects’ encounters with texts can exceed or circumvent literal reading. The Asian-African-Canadian novelist M.G. Vassanji has been particularly attuned to the physicality of paper, most definitively in two of his novels set in East Africa, The Gunny Sack (1989) and The Book of Secrets (1994). In this article I analyse how Vassanji’s characters, both literate and illiterate, engage paper’s physical properties to ground their everyday practices of memory, valuation, and interpretation. By attending to paper’s materiality in Vassanji’s work postcolonial studies can situate its own reading practices in the context of material ways of doing things with texts. I wrote this short story as an assignment for my ENG 315 class. I don't know where the idea came from, but it grabbed on and wouldn't let go. So as kooky as the idea was, I knew I had to just go with it. With this story, I wanted to pay homage to the fears and follies we experience in high school and the unexpected effect they often have on us. At the end of the late Middle Ages and in the early Renaissance, there was a crisis of values in Spanish society that marked the end of one era and the beginning of another. However, there are elements of our culture, mainly related to Catholicism, that survive, such as social stratification, sexism, and the control of human behavior by the Church. To analyze these issues, clothing embodied in the artistic expressions of our literature serves as both testimony and a literary device influencing character development. Thus, this paper focuses on the selection of works in the literature of the last decade of the fifteenth century in our search for and choice of a precise and concrete corpus that will help us investigate how such social gaps were enacted in the practices of this period, how the discrimination between men and women was manifested, and whether certain types of clothing were prohibited or recommended to enable better control of the Church over people, thus shaping fashions and customs. The article analyzes how author Charlotte Perkins Gilman uses the metaphor of rooms as used by author Charles Dickens to highlight the claustrophobic experience of the narrator in her novel "The Yellow Wall-Paper." She praised him for transcending sex his fiction. Her claustrophobic experience in "The Yellow Wall-Paper' shows two earlier rooms of Dickens where the tyranny of enclosed space takes a psychological toll on male characters. The nursery room wall in her novel shares the panoptic vision of the character Pip's wall.

Neomodernist novelists seek to recreate and rearrange the basic propositions and methods of modernism not to just to keep the modernist enterprise alive but also to expand its range of presentation and interpretation. The art of Neomodernist novelists falls in line with that of their predecessors in that it endeavours to analyse innermost emotions and state of things as they actually are using typically modernist procedures. In other words neomodernist novelists subject modernist principles of taste and style to a new process to analyse contemporary issues. The paper examines how Damon Galgut, in the novel under reference, employs typical modernist strategies to foreground the complications and complexities issuing from an Afrikaner family's inability to keep the promise of passing on a bequest to their Black servant, Salome. This by implication parallels the situation engendered by the policy of racial discrimination or segregation (apartheid) formerly practised in South Africa. It also analyses how the use of characteristic modernist techniques like narrative flexibility, which is easily perceptible through oscillating points of view, allows the author to present the characters from divergent perspectives. In this paper, we investigate whether efficiency and strategy-proofness of allocation mechanisms defined on a "local" preference set imply dictatorship. Although there is an extensive literature on the characterization of efficient and strategy-proof allocation mechanisms defined on the whole preference set, little attention has been given to a local characterization even in two-agent economies. This paper presents three results. First, we point out that locally efficient, strategy-proof, and nondictatorial allocation mechanisms exists even in two-agent economies, when boundary allocations can be efficient. Second, excluding such exceptional cases, we show that in economies where the number of goods equals or exceeds the number of agents, any efficient and strategy-proof allocation mechanism defined on any local preference domain is alternately dictatorial, that is, it always allocates the total amount of goods to some single agent, even if the receivers vary. Third, we clarify that the local characterization is generally an open question even with allocation conditions such as the minimum consumption guarantee, and show that efficiency and strategy-proofness are incompatible with allocation conditions when all agents have the same local preference set. The paper examines the complex relation between anti-democratic forces ("the extremists") and the broader liberal-democratic institutional environment. The task of containing extremists is analysed both from a theoretical standpoint and in terms of its practical feasibility. I argue that the realities of political communication and the character of political argumentation make containing extremism in practice a much more daunting proposition than is usually understood in the literature. Insights from political philosophy, political science and communication theory are brought together to press these points. As a result, extremists often cannot be stopped from running for office even if the state possesses tools to ban extremist parties. Moreover, once extremist politicians become members of legislative bodies, several democratic and procedural considerations start to apply to them so that it becomes difficult to limit their influence. Their elevated status (given their positions as legitimate representatives of the people, together with the increased media and argumentative platform they gain) complicates attempts at stopping the proliferation of their views. The last part of the paper briefly sketches possible (remnants of) a strategy of containment, arguing that only a combination of informal sanctions can be (partially) successful, including deplatforming, refusal to engage with them, and a pariah status in the legislative assembly. Emphasizing the interplay between Hemingway's life and his work, this study delves into the writer's substantial impact, particularly on the short story, despite his better-known association with the novel. It scrutinizes the ethical complexities and moral relativism inherent in Hemingway's character depiction and also shows the profound influence of World War I on Hemingway's literary output, shedding light on its resonance within his short stories and books. Literature has numerous dimensions, among which novels and short stories are worth the mention. Stories from the past have been including disabled male and female characters in their plots, but the question of how these characters have been depicted is still debatable. When it comes to writers of the disability study, it has been noticed that they have been trying to establish the present state of people with impairments with the help of their deformed or disabled characters. It has been witnessed that novels and short stories concentrate on bringing out the darker side of a disabled person by focusing on his/her issues and sufferings. The objective of this paper is to expose that literary works rarely focus on the brighter facet of a disabled character, especially a woman. It projects the differences that are endured by fictional individuals. The analysis undertakes the theory of Intersectionality to support its arguments of projecting the discrepancies in the picturisations of disabled female dramatic personas in novels and short stories. Despite a near-universal acknowledgement of the mimetic power of Yuri Trifonov's writing, both Soviet and contemporary criticism read tends to read his characters allegorically, as representatives for moral, historical, or ethnographic categories. Taking inspiration from a 1972 essay by Trifonov himself that insists on the equal treatment of literary and living persons, this paper examines the peculiar ways in which minor characters are depicted across Trifonov's oeuvre precisely because of the author's commitment to treating his characters as representations of living individuals. Starting with Alexander Woloch's concept of the "character-space," the first section of the article looks at the ways in which the fates of minor characters are consistently given account no matter their significance to the narrative, arguing that Trifonov's character system is one built upon the principle of acquaintance and not. The second half of the article looks at the prominence of physical objects in Trifonov's works that serve as indexes for absent characters, marking a shift from representation through depiction towards a novel technique of the "indexical characterization" in Another Life (1975) and The Old Man (1980). In this article, the author reflects on the writing process and authors' ability to bring fictional characters to life in their work. Several contemporary authors are discussed including Michael Jeffrey Lee, George Saunders and Denis Johnson. The author's experiences judging a fiction writing contest are also discussed.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to add to the understanding of the human personality of fraudsters. This paper will explore their human personality by reviewing three characters from realist novels that have fraudsters as their leading characters. This pa[er will also contribute to literature that intersects between the humanities and criminology. Design/methodology/approach: This paper reviews three fraudster characters from realist novels to explore their human personality, which includes qualitative phenomena resistant to positivist research. Findings: Literature character review that adds to understanding of the qualitative nature of the personality of fraudsters. This qualitative nature of the human personality has been neglected in fraud research and the findings contribute to expanding understanding of the qualitative nature of fraud and fraudsters. Research limitations/implications: This paper is limited to a literature review from three characters from realist novels. Practical implications: By expanding understanding of the human personality of fraudsters literary insights can contribute to fraud identification and prevention. Originality/value: This paper reviews the human personality of three characters from novels to expand understanding of fraudsters, and thus contributes to the intersection of research between the humanities and criminology and fraud research. The theoretical discussion of the present paper is particularly based on the insights of Giorgio Agamben contextualized in Iris Murdoch's novel, A Word Child (1975), written in the transitional period of the seventies England. It will inspect Agamben's biopolitical insights to examine how they may contribute to understanding of the dark side of sovereignty considering the figure of a banished individual. Taking the precariousness of the emotional, political and ontological faculties of 'love', 'homo sacer' and 'bare life' allocated to the human being in Murdoch's novel, A Word Child, this paper offers a different view of Murdoch's inspirational emphatic love, sociopolitical abstruse problems in her novel arguing that Agamben's account of these issues supplies an underlying structure of the form-of-life. It resounds through Agamben's view as a neverending struggle of human beings to underpin the messiness and cruelty of life in which characters are emotionally engaged and entrapped in order to examine some potentialities as the escape routes from the prevailing deadlocks of the era and eventually to trace, according to Agamben, a form-of-life that is called a happy life.
