Background: Depression is a common chronic debilitating disease with a heavy social burden. single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) can affect the function of microRNAs (miRNAs), which is in turn associated with neurological diseases. However, the association between SNPs located in the promoter region of miR-17-92 and the risk of depression remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated the association between rs982873, rs9588884 and rs1813389 polymorphisms in the promoter region of miR-17-92 and the incidence of depression in a Chinese population. Methods: we used GWAS (Genome-wide association study) and NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) to screen three SNPs in the miR-17-92 cluster binding sites. A case-control study (including 555 cases and 541 controls) was conducted to investigate the relationship between the SNPs and risk of depression in different regions of China. The gene sequencing ii was used to genotype the collected blood samples. Results: the following genotypes were significantly associated with a reduced risk of depression: rs982873 TC (TC vs. TT: OR = 0.72, 95% CI, 0.54–0.96, P = 0.024; TC/CC vs. TT: OR = 0.74, 95% Cl, 0.56–0.96, P = 0.025); CG genotype of rs9588884 (CG vs. CC: OR = 0.74, 95% CI, 0.55–0.98, P = 0.033; CG/GG vs. CC: OR = 0.75, 95% Cl, 0.57–0.98, P = 0.036); and AG genotype of rs1813389 (AG vs. AA: OR = 0.75, 95% CI, 0.57-1.00, P = 0.049; AG/GG vs. AA: OR = 0.76, 95% Cl, 0.59-1.00, P = 0.047). Stratified analysis showed that there was no significant correlation between the three SNPS and variables such as family history of suicidal tendency (P > 0.05). Chinese citrus fly, Bactrocera minax (Enderlein; Diptera: Tephritidae), which attacks citrus fruits in China is one of the most important international quarantine pests. Understanding the function of visual organs is the basis of trapping and prevention for management of pests such as B. minax. In this study, take-off ability and crawling experiments were conducted using 5 groups of B. minax all with different visual blinding treatments (blind ocelli, blind left compound eye, blind right compound eye, blind compound eyes, blind ocelli and compound eyes) and a corresponding control that was not blinded. We found that both the left and right compound eyes played a critical role in the vertical and horizontal crawling behavior of B. minax, while the ocelli did not. However, the perception of ambient light by ocelli or either compound eye had a significant influence on take-off of B. minax. Elucidating the monocular and compound eye functions of B. minax will help us to develop better visual traps for this important pest of citrus. Background: Depression is among the most common psychiatric disorders, and is a leading cause of the global disease burden. Its pathophysiological mechanism is unclear, which limits the development of therapeutic strategies. Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPS) may be related. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of the rs2242385, rs155979, rs3762983, and rs3762984 polymorphisms in the lncRNA NONHSAT102891 on depression susceptibility in a Chinese population. Methods: We conducted a case-control study in a cohort of 480 patients with depression and 329 healthy controls, and performed genotyping by gene sequencing ii. Results: The rs155979 GC genotype was significantly associated with increased risk of depression compared with healthy controls. Stratified analysis showed a 2.08-fold increased risk of suicide in patients with rs155979 GC or GG genotype. The rs2242385, rs3762983, and rs3762984 polymorphisms were not significantly associated with the risk of depression. Haploid analysis showed linkage disequilibrium between rs155979, rs3762983, and rs3762984, and the CCG haplotype reduced the risk of depression. Limitations: The study sample was relatively small, and was restricted to patients from central and southern China. Further, only peripheral blood was used for DNA extraction. Conclusion: The rs155979 polymorphism may be associated with the occurrence of depression in the Chinese population. Background: Arthroscopic shavers play an indispensable role in arthroscopic debridement. They have exquisite structures and similar designs. The purpose of this study was to establish a reproducible testing protocol to compare the resection performance and the quality (tensile strength, torsional strength, and corrosion resistance) of different arthroscopic shavers with comparable designs. We hypothesized that there could be little difference in resection performance and quality between these shavers. Methods: Incisor Plus Blade (IPB; Smith & Nephew, Andover, MA) and Double Serrated Plus Blade (DSPB; BJKMC, Shanghai, China) were selected for resection performance and quality test. For resection performance testing, the resection torque, which is the minimum torque required to cut off silicone blocks with the same cross-sectional area, was measured to evaluate the resection performance of shaver blades when the other factors remain the same. For quality testing, tensile and torsion tests of the shavers' joint part were performed, and ultimate failure load and maximum torque were measured and compared. The corrosion resistance of these blades was assessed by the boiling water test based on the ISO13402. Results: No significant difference existed in the resection torque between the shaver blades of IPB and DSPB (P = 0.54). To the failure load of shavers' joint parts, IPB was significantly higher than DSPB, both in the outer and inner blades (P < 0.0001). The maximum torque of the joint part had no significant difference between IPB and DSPB (for inner blades P = 0.60 and outer blades P = 0.94). The failure load (for both IPB and DSPB P < 0.0001) and maximum torque (for IPB P = 0.0475 and DSPB P = 0.015) of the inner blades were higher than those of the outer blades. No blemishes were observed on the surface of the blades after corrosion resistance tests. Conclusions: This study provided some new methods to evaluate the resection performance and quality of different shavers. The resection performance, the torsional strength of the joint part, and the corrosion resistance of IPB and DSPB may show comparable properties, whereas the tensile strength of the shavers' joint part showed some level of difference. This paper presents the environmental history and its responses to palaeoclimatic changes since the start of the Holocene in the eastern portion of the desert belt (sand seas and sandy lands) in northern China by comparing the aeolian sandpalaeosol sequences and their palaeoclimatic proxies. The optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages of the aeolian sandpalaeosol sedimentary sequences and a series of palaeoenvironmental proxies show that: (1) The large-scale dune landscape currently in the Kubuqi Sand Sea was formed during the Holocene in general; and the palaeosol was generally developed during the period of 4–2 ka, indicating conditions favorable for vegetation growth, soil development, and organic carbon accumulation due to increased precipitation or effective moisture and weakened aeolian activities; the large-scale expansion of dunes in the recent 2 ka is closely linked to human activities. The variable discharge of the Yellow River with diversions for irrigation may have resulted in a more consistent supply of aeolian particles for dune field expansion. (2) The dune landscape of the Hunshandake Sandy Land was likely formed around 12 ka, and before this, the western part of the Hunshandake Sandy Land would have been covered by a single large lake; it was obviously wetter than today in the sandy land during the period of 9.6–3 ka and the palaeosols were developed at the same time. But the aeolian activities have not been completely dormant in this long-lasting wetter epoch; because the Holocene wetter period was likely time-transgressive across the region. (3) The palaeosol of the Hulunbuir Sandy Land began to develop as early as 14.5 ka, probably continuing until the last 2 ka. The palaeosol development of various dune fields in the eastern portion of the desert belt (sand seas and sandy lands) in northern China is spatially heterogeneous, and even the palaeosol development time in different locations within each sandy land is inconsistent. During the middle Holocene (especially the 7.5–3.5 ka), all the sandy lands were stabilized in general and the intensity of aeolian activities was significantly weakened. The number of palaeoenvironmental records in the eastern portion of the desert belt (sand seas and sandy lands) in northern China has increased rapidly in the past decade, but the amount of published data still does not match the vast extent of the dune fields. Abstract: This study investigated total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in five species of freshwater fish and their associated fish pond sediments collected from 18 freshwater fish ponds around the Pearl River Delta (PRD). The concentrations of THg and MeHg in fish pond surface sediments were 33.1–386ngg−1 dry wt and 0.18–1.25ngg−1 dry wt, respectively. The age of ponds affected the surface sediment MeHg concentration. The vertical distribution of MeHg in sediment cores showed that MeHg concentrations decreased with increasing depth in the top 10cm. In addition, a significant correlation was observed between %MeHg and DNA from Desulfovibrionacaea or Desulfobulbus (p <0.05) in sediment cores. Concentrations of THg and MeHg in fish muscles ranged from 7.43–76.7 to 5.93–76.1ngg−1 wet wt, respectively, with significant linear relationships (r =0.97, p <0.01, n =122) observed between THg and MeHg levels in fish. A significant correlation between THg concentrations in fish (herbivorous: r =0.71, p <0.05, n =7; carnivorous: r =0.77, p <0.05, n =11) and corresponding sediments was also obtained. Risk assessment indicated that the consumption of largemouth bass and mandarin fish would result in higher estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of MeHg than reference dose (RfD) for both adults and children. Abstract: To study the influence of mariculture on mercury (Hg) speciation and distribution in sediments and cultured fish around Hong Kong and adjacent mainland China waters, sediment samples were collected from six mariculture sites and the corresponding reference sites, 200–300m away from the mariculture sites. Mariculture activities increased total mercury, organic matter, carbon, nitrogen and sulfur concentrations in the surface sediments underneath mariculture sites, possibly due to the accumulation of unconsumed fish feed and fish excretion. However, methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations and the ratio of MeHg to THg (% MeHg) in sediments underneath mariculture sites were lower than the corresponding reference sites. The % MeHg in sediments was negatively correlated (r =−0.579, p <0.05) with organic matter (OM) content among all sites, indicating that OM may have inhibited Hg methylation in surface sediments. Three mariculture fish species were collected from each mariculture site, including red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus), orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) and snubnose pompano (Trachinotus blochii). The average MeHg concentration in fish muscle was 75μgkg−1 (wet weight), and the dietary intake of MeHg through fish consumption for Hong Kong residents was 0.37μgkg−1 week−1, which was lower than the corresponding WHO limits (500μgkg−1 and 1.6μgkg−1 week−1). Deciphering the P-T-t path of ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) rocks is crucial for reconstructing the evolution of continental crustal terranes involved in very deep subduction followed by exhumation. Achievieng this goal is especially challenging for UHP terranes which experienced protracted high/ultrahigh temperature (high-T/UHT) exhumation histories, because the widespread anatexis associated to retrograde re-equilibration often obliterate the evidence of UHP metamorphism. In the Dabie-Sulu orogenic belt of central-eastern China, which is the largest UHP terrane in the world, the migmatitic North Dabie complex Zone (NDZ) is the archetype of such UHP terranes experiencing a "slow and hot" exhumation. The NDZ stands out for the widespread anatexis that widely overprinted the traces of eclogite-facies metamorphism, hampering a precise reconstruction of its P-T-(t) evolution. This paper presents the results of a multidisciplinary study integrating P–T pseudosection of phase equilibrium modeling, conventional geothermometry and zircon U–Pb dating with trace element analysis applied on the high–T UHP eclogites from the NDZ. The studied eclogites underwent a multistage metamorphic evolution including post-peak granulite-facies overprinting and subsequent amphibolite-facies retrogression. P–T conditions of the granulite-facies overprinting and the amphibolite-facie retrogression have been estimated at >830 °C, 7–12 kbar and 560–880 °C, 4.3–8.9 kbar, respectively. New zircon U–Pb dating, mineral inclusion and trace element analysis, combined with modeled plagioclase modal variation by pseudosection approach, allowed constraining the ages of prograde metamorphism, eclogite-facies metamorphism, granulite-facies overprinting and amphibolite-facies retrogression of the eclogites at 247–230 Ma, 226–219 Ma, 217–212 Ma and 214–198 Ma, respectively. These results provide new P–T-t estimates and age data for the multiple metamorphic stages during continental collision, contributing to precisely reconstruct the whole P–T–t path of the NDZ. Getah virus (GETV) is a mosquito-transmitted disease that affects animals, causing fever, aseptic meningitis, and abortion. Its prevalence in China poses risks to both animal health and public well-being. Currently, there is a scarcity of seroepidemiological data on GETV due to the absence of commercial antibody detection kits for pigs. The aim of this study is to develop a rapid, accurate, and sensitive ELISA, providing a reliable tool for GETV seroepidemiology and laying the foundation for future commercial assay development. In this study, we removed specific hydrophobic domains and intracellular structures from E2 proteins and constructed the recombinant plasmid pCold-TF-E2. The recombinant protein was expressed using a prokaryotic expression system, and efficient purification of the rE2 protein was achieved using a nickel affinity column. The purified rE2 protein is suitable for the development of an indirect ELISA (rE2 ELISA). Following the optimization of reaction conditions for the rE2-ELISA, the cut-off value was 0.356. Additionally, the rE2-ELISA method showed a positive rate of 37.1% for IgG antibodies against GETV when testing 986 pig clinical serum samples collected from pigs in Sichuan between May 2022 and September 2022. The rE2-ELISA method displayed a 95.1% overall agreement with VNT, boasting a sensitivity of 98.2% and a specificity of 92.6%. These results indicate that IgG ELISA based on rE2 protein is an efficient and economical method for the detection of GETV antibodies in pigs, facilitating the diagnosis and prevention of GETV. • An indirect ELISA method for detecting GETV antibodies in swine was established. • The soluble recombinant E2 protein acts as the coated antigen. • Waterlogging caused yield reductions in wheat with greater yield losses in modern cultivars than in older ones. • Synergcistic improvements in yield components contributed to the establishment of high- and stable-yield cultivars. • Promoting the photosynthetic capacity of the flag leaf facilitated the selection of high- and stable-yield cultivars. Frequent waterlogging events have severely constrained wheat production in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China (YR). Understanding the effects of waterlogging on agronomic traits and grain yield in historic wheat cultivars can help establish strategies for stable- and high-yield breeding programs. We conducted a two-year field experiment using 10 winter wheat cultivars that were released and widely planted in YR from 1967 to 2010. Ten days of waterlogging were imposed on plants beginning at stem elongation (Zadoks growth stage, GS33). Grain yield was improved with the year of cultivar release, gaining 53 kg ha−1 yr−1 (0.6% yr−1) under normal watering condition and 35 kg ha−1 yr−1 (0.51% yr-1) under waterlogging treatment from 1967 to 2010, showing that waterlogging tolerance declined with cultivar improvement. Yield improvement was primarily due to the synergistic development of kernels per spike and 1000-kernel weight, as well as the increased harvest index from the 1960s to 1990s and the increased total biomass from the 1990s to 2000s. Furthermore, genetic improvement significantly increased post-anthesis biomass, leaf area at milk-ripe (GS75), and net photosynthetic rate in flag leaf. Due to waterlogging, kernels per spike, sing-spike yield, total biomass, post-anthesis biomass, leaf area at milk-ripe decreased more with the year of cultivar release, but we did not find a significant reduction in spikes per m2, 1000-kernel weight, and harvest index across cultivars. Grain yield and single-spike yield were significantly and positively correlated with leaf area at milk-ripe, as well as net photosynthetic rate in flag leaf. However, their reductions were only significantly correlated with the reduction in leaf area. Moreover, waterlogging did not significantly affect flag leaf area. This study suggests that improving the photosynthetic capacity of flag leaf will assist in the selection of new wheat varieties with waterlogging-tolerance and high-yields. Frequent waterlogging near anthesis is a primary constraint for wheat production in the Yangtze River Basin, China. This study aimed to identify the critical stage for waterlogging on wheat yield and its components and identify the possible factors determining this stage. In the first experiment (E1), we evaluated three varieties and initiated a 10-day waterlogging starting at the stem elongation (S1), booting (S2), and anthesis (S3) stages. In the second experiment (E2), waterlogging was applied at the stem elongation (S1) and anthesis (S3) stages and for three durations (five, 10, and 15 days). In E1, waterlogging at S1 and S2 resulted in a lower grain yield than at S3. In the second year of E1, grain yield under waterlogging at S1 and S3 was similar but significantly lower than under waterlogging conditions at S2. Waterlogging at S1 and S2 greatly decreased the kernel number per spike and 1000-kernel weight, but waterlogging at S3 only decreased the 1000-kernel weight. Moreover, different varieties did not change the stages mostly reducing grain yield and yield components. In E2, grain yield decreased with prolonged exposure to waterlogging and was significantly lower under 15-day conditions than the five-day conditions. There was no significant interaction between the stage and duration of waterlogging. Finally, our results indicate that in yield formation, a greater reliance on kernel weight instead of the kernel number per spike can contribute to a reduction in yield loss for waterlogging at S1 and S2. In March 1966, Ms 6.8 and 7.2 earthquakes occurred in Xingtai, North China, resulting in widespread soil liquefaction that caused severe infrastructure damage and economic losses. Using Keyhole satellite imagery combined with aerial images and fieldwork records, we interpreted and identified 66,442 liquefaction points and analyzed the coseismic liquefaction distribution characteristics and possible factors that influenced the Xingtai earthquakes. The interpreted coseismic liquefaction was mainly concentrated above the IX-degree zone, accounting for 80% of all liquefaction points. High-density liquefaction zones (point density > 75 pieces/km2) accounted for 22% of the total liquefaction points. Most of the interpreted liquefaction points were located at the region with a peak ground acceleration (PGA) of >0.46 g. The liquefaction area on 22 March was significantly larger than that on 8 March. The region of liquefaction was mainly limited by sandy soil conditions, water system conditions, and seismic geological conditions and distributed in areas with loose fine sand and silt deposits, a high water table (groundwater level increases before both mainshocks corresponding to the liquefaction intensive regions), rivers, and ancient river channels. Liquefaction exhibited a repeating characteristic in the same region. China's first optical stereo mapping satellite with a sub-meter resolution, GaoFen-7 (GF-7), launched in November 2019, shows significant potential for providing high-resolution topographic and geomorphic data for quantitative research on active tectonics. However, no studies have evaluated the capability of the GF-7-generated digital elevation model (DEM) for quantitatively studying active tectonics. This study aimed to validate the accuracy of the DEMs extracted from GF-7 stereo imagery, with or without ground control points (GCPs), and evaluated the potential of applying GF-7 DEMs to active tectonics. First, GF-7 stereo images were processed to obtain DEMs with a spatial resolution of 2 m, utilizing three different methods, including block adjustment without GCPs, block adjustment with the aid of Google Earth images and SRTM DEM, and block adjustment with GCPs derived from the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) data. These three generated DEMs were called GF-7 DEMMethod1, GF-7 DEMMethod2, and GF-7 DEMMethod3, respectively, and were verified by the airborne LiDAR data in the Hasishan section of the Haiyuan fault. Second, the capability of the GF-7 DEMs for identifying active faults, fault scarps, and horizontal offsets was evaluated. Finally, 8 vertical and 13 horizontal offsets were measured based on three different GF-7 DEMs, and airborne LiDAR data were used to verify the measurements' accuracies. The results indicated that the accuracy of GF-7 DEMMethod1 was the worst and that of GF-7 DEMMethod3 was superior to that of GF-7 DEMMethod2. The GF-7 DEMs could effectively identify the apparent fault scarps and horizontal offsets. The RMSE values of the vertical offsets measured based on GF-7 DEMMethod1, GF-7 DEMMethod2, and GF-7 DEMMethod3 were 0.55 m, 0.55 m, and 0.41 m, respectively. The horizontal offsets yielded RMSE values of 3.98 m, 2.52 m, and 1.37 m, respectively. These findings demonstrated that vertical and horizontal offsets could be accurately measured using the DEMs generated from GF-7 stereo images. Meanwhile, our study indicated that the GCPs derived from ICESat-2 data could be utilized to improve the accuracies of the GF-7 DEM, and the measurements of vertical and horizontal offsets. Consumption of fish and aquatic products is considered to be the main pathway of human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg). To assess human health risk through seafood consumption in a coastal area of Guangdong Province, South China, a total of 518 seafood samples (including fish, shrimp, crabs, and mollusks) were collected from 11 coastal cities for total mercury (THg) analysis. The THg concentrations varied significantly among different seafood groups and ranged from 0.11 to 317 ng/g (with a mean of 37.2 ng/g). The THg concentrations were relatively low compared with fish from Europe and North America, and no samples exceeded the national limit recommended by the Standardization Administration of China (0.5 ng/g wet wt). The ecological functional groups and cultured styles have significant effects on THg concentrations in the fish tissue. The median of probable daily intakes (PDIs) of MeHg via seafood consumption ranged from 42.6 to 71.4 ng/g for different age groups, with fish contributing the major portion (84%). Abstract: The atmospheric concentrations of carbonyls and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene and o-xylene) were measured simultaneously in summers of Beijing from year 2008 to 2010. The total concentrations of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone in the consecutive summers, which were 33.4 μg m−3, 36.7 μg m−3 and 48.6 μg m−3, respectively, were much lower than those reported in the summers of 2005 (58.4 μg m−3) and 2006 (77.4 μg m−3). The concentrations of BTEX in the summers were 16 μg m−3, 21.5 μg m−3 and 15.4 μg m−3, respectively. The maximal contributions of photochemical reactions to atmospheric formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in the summers were estimated to be around 47.6–60.3%. The average ozone formation potentials (OFPs) for carbonyls and BTEX as well as carbon monoxide in summer of Beijing were calculated as 166.1 μg m−3, 65.4 μg m−3 and 100.8 μg m−3, respectively. Abstract: In order to fill the knowledge gaps between lab/pilot-scale and full-scale operations and contribute basic information to long-term and stable operation of large-scale membrane bioreactors (MBRs), a systematic investigation was first conducted focused on soluble microbial products (SMPs) in 10 large-scale MBRs (capacity over 10,000m3/d) for municipal wastewater treatment distributed in 4 different areas of China from fall to winter. The majority of these MBR plants had been operated stably for at least 1 year. Fundamental properties of SMPs were investigated, including composition, molecular weight distribution, hydrophobicity, fluorescent characteristics and fouling potential. The results showed that the concentration of SMPs ranged roughly from 5 to 25mg TOC/L, with the major component being polysaccharides (ca. 3–18mg/L) followed by humic substances (ca. 2–10mg/L); while the protein concentration was relatively low (<5mg/L). The SMPs presented a broad molecular weight distribution from smaller than 1kDa to over 100kDa. About half of the SMPs were hydrophilic substances mainly contributed by polysaccharides; humic substances were concentrated in hydrophobic fractions while proteins showed a relatively wide distribution. The fluorescent properties were found to be affected appreciably by the influent quality. The batch fouling tests indicated that the initial fouling rate correlated significantly with SMPs concentrations, which was particularly the case for hydrophilic and large-molecular-weight fractions. These findings may contribute to better understanding of membrane fouling in engineering conditions and assist in long-term and stable operation of full-scale MBRs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Numerous studies have explored paleoenvironmental conditions in China's dune fields around the mid-Holocene (MH), ∼6000 calendar years ago, often based on individual paleosol-aeolian sand depositional sequences and local-scale landscape dynamics. So far, continent-scale modeling studies have only indirectly assessed dune activation and stabilization processes via changes in simulated precipitation, net precipitation (precipitation minus evaporation), and effective moisture (precipitation divided by evaporation). Here we conducted a comprehensive study using gridded data on potential evapotranspiration, precipitation, and surface wind velocity from 13 climate models participating in the Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project phases 4 (PMIP4) and compared the model results with geological records. Our evaluation of spatial patterns of dune activity in northern China around the MH reveals that the intensity of annual MH dune activity exhibited significant differences between the eastern and western parts of Chinese deserts compared to those of the preindustrial period (PI). Dune activity was significantly weaker in the eastern region, while in the western part, it was considerably stronger. The key drivers of this disparity were the distinct spatial variations in near-surface wind speed and effective moisture between the two regions. Compared with the optically stimulated luminescence ages of the paleosol-aeolian sand sedimentary sequences derived from a compilation of geological records from 88 sites across northern China, the model results suggest that the weakening of dune activity and the process of dune stabilization in eastern China around the MH were mainly attributed to a significant increase in effective moisture and a concurrent decrease in near-surface wind speed due to the intensified East Asian summer monsoon. • The system performs best at 6 h hydraulic retention time. • It achieved 0.215 g/h salts removal at a wastewater treatment capacity of 10 L/d. • Microbial community structures are consistent with the spatial structure of cathode. • Catholyte circulation should be effective for the stratified microbial structures. In this study, two dual-anode assembled microbial desalination cells (DA-MDCs) composed of two anodes, one cathode and two membrane stacks were constructed, with a hollow fiber membrane (HFM) module coupling into the cathode to filtrate suspended solids and microbes. Enriched domestic wastewater treatment performance of the DA-MDC system under different hydraulic retention time (HRT) was investigated in detail. When HRT sequentially decreased from 10 h, 8 h, 6 h to 4 h, the conductivity in diluent effluent kept stable at first, but increased 519% at 4 h compared with 6 h. Nevertheless, the chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen and total phosphorus in the effluent met the wastewater discharge standards in China at all HRTs. Additionally, transmembrane pressure of the HFM modules increased sharply when HRT changed from 6 h to 4 h. Therefore, HRT 6 h was selected as the optimal condition. Under such short HRT, the system realized wastewater treatment capacity of 10 L/d, surpassing all bio-cathode microbial desalination cell systems aiming to realize efficient treatment of domestic wastewater. Additionally, the salt removal rate of 0.215 g/h was more than two times compared with most similar systems. Finally, stratified microbial community structures in the cathodes of the system were found. • We report in situ S isotope analysis for multiple types of sulfides by LA-MC-ICPMS. • In situ S isotope analysis is applied to the study of the Erlihe Zn-Pb ore deposit. • Sulfur of the massive ores is likely sourced from the TSR process for the deposit. Sulfur isotopic composition is useful for tracing sources of ore-forming materials. In situ sulfur isotope analysis by laser ablation coupled with multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICPMS) has an advantage over traditional bulk analysis in tracing sources of sulfur in an ore deposit that has complex mineral types and multiple ore-forming processes. However, in using this method, matrix effects exist widely for sulfides from ore deposits. In this work, matrix effects of different sulfides were examined by matrix-unmatched tests, in which the δ34S values of different types of sulfides were calibrated against a laboratory pyrite standard. The results show that the δ34S values of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, sphalerite, and arsenopyrite are in agreement with the reference values, suggesting that the matrix effect was negligible. However, a significant matrix effect occurred in the analyses of Ag 2 S and galena, leading to significant deviations in δ34S values of up to 1.2‰ and 3.2‰, respectively. The matrix effect occurred not only during the laser ablation stage but also during the transition of ions into the mass spectrometer, resulting in significant space charge effects caused by heavy-mass elements. Thus, pyrite can be used as an external bracketing standard for sulfides that do not have a heavy-mass matrix. Based on our matrix-effect study, the following available external standards were selected for the in situ sulfur isotope analysis of complex-type minerals from the Erlihe Zn-Pb deposit. The coarse-grained sphalerite grains (Sph1) and euhedral to subhedral pyrite grains (Py1) from massive ores have δ34S values ranging from 9.2‰ to 18.1‰. Such heavy sulfur isotopic compositions indicate the derivation of sulfur from the deposits of seawater sulfate, related to a thermochemical reducing process. Fine-grained sphalerite (Sph2) and pyrite (Py2) from vein and disseminated ores coexist with pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite, and have relatively light sulfur isotopic compositions, with δ34S values of about 7‰. The slightly positive δ34S values are similar to those of sulfides from sulfide-rich quartz veins, which contain δ34S values of about 4‰, and granodiorite rocks, with δ34S values of about 6‰. Based on previous studies, the light sulfur of the late-stage sulfides may have resulted from a metamorphic or magmatic hydrothermal event during the Indosinian orogeny. In situ sulfur analysis by LA-MC-ICPMS provides new evidence for sources of sulfur from each stage of mineralization in the Erlihe deposit, suggesting that this is a promising method for studying complex ore deposits. Objectives: 2D:4D is an anthropometric indicator that may reflect the level of intrauterine sexual hormone exposure before birth. The aromatase gene (CYP19A1) mainly encodes cytochrome P450 aromatase, a key enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of androgens to estrogens in vivo and affects the development of 2D:4D. Studying the association between six single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in CYP19A1 and digit ratios in the normal population of China will provide some basis for the biological basis of digit ratio development and promote the practical application of digit ratios.Methods: In this study, six SNPs (rs10046, rs2414095, rs4646, rs4775936, rs749292 and rs936306) in CYP19A1 were tested in 1949 students (692 males and 1247 females) by TaqMan SNP genotyping in Ningxia, China. The digit ratios (right and left 2D:4D and right-left 2D:4D [Dr-l]) of all participants were collected using a photographic record.Results: The frequencies of the genotypes rs2414095 (P < 0.05), rs10046 (P < 0.01) and rs4775936 (P < 0.05) in the CYP19A1 gene and their allele frequencies were significantly different between the Hui and Han populations, and the frequency of the rs2414095 genotype (P < 0.05) was significantly different between males and females in Ningxia, China. There was a sex difference in right and left 2D:4D and in Dr-l. There was no significant association between the six SNPs of the CYP19A1 gene and right and left 2D:4D, although rs4775936 showed a lower 2D:4D ratio in allele T than in allele C, in both male and female subjects. For Dr-l we found that rs4775936 associated with increased Dr-l in females (t787 = -2.441, P < 0.05).Conclusions: We found the different frequencies of rs10046, rs2414095 and rs4775936 between Hui and Han populations in China. There was an association between rs4775936 and Dr-l. Background: Mixed results have shown the association between sleep behavior and depression, but evidence relating the joint effect of sleep duration and sleep disturbances is limited, especially in Chinese population.Methods: A total of 512,891 adults aged 30-79 years from China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) were included. Depression was defined by Composite International Diagnostic Inventory-short form (CIDI-SF). Sleep duration and sleep disturbances, including difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep (DIMS), early morning awakening (EMA), daytime dysfunction (DDF) and any sleep disturbances (ASD), were obtained by a self-reported questionnaire. Logistic regression was applied to examine the association between sleep behavior and depression.Results: About 23.1% of participants reported short sleep duration (≤ 6h), and 5.1% reported long sleep duration (> 9h). Compared with normal sleep duration (7-9h), both groups were associated greater likelihood of having depression (short sleep: OR = 2.32, 95%CI: 2.14-2.51; long sleep: OR = 1.56, 96%CI: 1.34-1.81). Participants reported sleep disturbances were significantly associated with depression (odds ratios ranged from 3.31 to 4.17). Moreover, the associations tended to be stronger for those who reported both abnormal sleep duration and sleep disturbances (p for interactions < 0.05), especially for those who slept long.Limitations: The cross-sectional nature of the study design limits the interpretation of the results.Conclusions: Abnormal sleep duration and sleep disturbances were associated with depression. The associations were stronger for abnormal sleep duration accompanied with sleep disturbances, especially for a long duration. More attention should be paid on these persons in clinical practice. Abstract: Objective: This study aims to analyse the epidemiology of paediatric burns in south central China, illustrate the differences between rural and urban areas, and discern prevention measures to reduce paediatric burns. Methods: Data were obtained from all paediatric patients admitted to Department of Burns unit of Xiangya Hospital during 2009–2012. A retrospective review was performed, including cause of burn, pre-hospital treatment, place of burn occurrence, anatomical areas involved, extent of burn, date of injury, number of operations, complications, length of hospital stay, hospitalisation cost and cure rate. Results: A total of 278 hospitalised paediatric patients were admitted in this study. The majority (56.47%) were 1–3 years old. Rural patients accounted for 67.99% in total; the ratio of boys to girls was 2.05. Scalding with hot fluids was the most common cause of burns in children (62.59%), followed by flame (17.63), fireworks (9.71%), electricity (5.76%) and other factors such as contact and chemical (4.32%). The living room was the location with the highest frequency of burns in children (53.24%). Burns were more likely to happen in winter and the upper extremities were the most involved anatomic site (53.24%). Total burn surface area (TBSA) ranging from 0% to 9% accounted for 55.4% in total. Rural patients underwent more operations and had longer and costlier hospital stays than urban patients. Conclusion: Compared with treatment in urban areas, rural burn patients received less first-aid treatment, underwent more surgery, had more complications and longer and more costly hospital stays. This finding strongly suggests that it is necessary to make more efforts to prevent burns, especially in rural areas. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Sensitivity analysis of thermal equilibrium parameters in the reservoir module of MIKE 11 model was conducted for the Wuxikou Reservoir in Jiangxi Province of China in order to apply the module to the environmental impact assessment to accurately predict water temperature of reservoirs. Results showed that radiation parameter A and evaporation-first parameter were much more sensitive than other parameters. The values of the radiation parameter A ranged from 0.10 to 0.34. The values of evaporation-first parameter varied from 0 to 10. The sensitivity of solar absorption parameters was less than that of evaporation parameter, of which light attenuation values ranged from 0.5 to 0.7, and this parameter would not impact model results if it was more than 2. Constants in Beer's law ranged from 0.2 to 0.7. Radiation parameter B was not more sensitive than evaporation parameter and its reasonable range was higher than 0.48. The fitting curves showed consistent changing tendency for these parameters within the reasonable ranges. Additionally, all the thermal equilibrium parameters had much more important effects on surface water temperature than deep water temperature. Moreover, if no observed data could be obtained, the local empirical value would be used to input to the MIKE 11 model to simulate the changes in the discharged outflow-water temperature qualitatively. • Geochemical characteristics of aeolian sand from two different dune fields were studied. • Spatial differences are primarily caused by surface processes and provenances. • Aeolian sand in the Horqin Sandy Land experienced intense chemical weathering. • Coarse and fine sand fractions move via separate transportation pathways. Geochemical studies examining surface aeolian sediments are significant for understanding Earth's surface processes and determining sediment provenance in arid and semi-arid regions. However, there is limited research on the geochemical comparison of aeolian sediments formed under distinctive tectonic and climatic settings. Surficial sand samples from the Taklamakan Desert and Horqin Sandy Land in northern China were collected, and the major, trace, and rare earth elements (REEs) in the bulk samples, fine fractions (<75 µm) and coarse fractions (>75 µm) of sand were analyzed. This study aimed to explore the spatial variation in the geochemical composition of aeolian sand and its drivers. The results show that differences between the two regions are primarily caused by the intensity of chemical weathering, sedimentary recycling, and provenance. The mean chemical proxy of alteration (72.3 vs. 77.8) and the Parker's weathering values (37.8 vs. 55.8) both suggest the bulk samples from the Horqin Sandy Land experienced more intense chemical weathering, whereas physical weathering is a dominant process in the Taklamakan Desert. These differences may be attributed to the different climatic conditions in the two regions and the exposure time to weathering. A combination of the index of compositional variability and immobile trace element ratios shows that aeolian sand in the Horqin Sandy Land underwent more intense sedimentary recycling than sediments in the Taklamakan Desert. REEs ratios (such as Cr/V and Y/Ni) and the Al 2 O 3 -CaO*+Na 2 O-K 2 O (A-CN-K) diagram indicate aeolian sand in the Taklamakan Desert is probably derived from mixed source rocks of tonalite, granite, and granodiorite. Eu anomaly vs. (La/Yb) N diagrams suggest that the primary source-rocks contributing to the coarse and fine fractions in the Horqin Sandy Land are different but mainly derived from the Great Hinggan Mountains. Differences in the provenance of the fine- and coarse-grained fractions are primarily controlled by interactions between wind and fluvial systems. This study confirms that surface processes and sediment provenance in drylands of northern china have distinct spatial differences, implying that geochemical signatures in aeolian sand need to be interpreted in the specific climatic and tectonic contexts. Abstract: Emissions of mercury (Hg) to air have regional and global impacts through long range transport in the atmosphere. Primary Zn production is regarded as an important anthropogenic Hg source in China, but research on its Hg emission is limited. To gain a better understanding of Hg emissions from Zn production activities in China, field investigations at four industrial-scale Zn production plants using electrostatic process with Hg removal (HP-WR), electrostatic process without Hg removal (HP-WOR), retort Zn production (RZ), imperial smelting process (ISP), and one artisanal Zn smelting process (AZ) were carried out. In the investigation, Hg emission factors are defined as how much Hg was emitted to the atmosphere per ton Zn produced during various Zn production methods and were estimated by using mass balance method. The results showed that the estimated Hg emission factors of Zn production were 5.7±4.0g Hg t− 1 Zn for HP-WR, 31±22g Hg t− 1 Zn for HP-WOR, 34±71g Hg t− 1 Zn for RZ, 122±122g Hg t− 1 Zn g t− 1 for ISP, and 75±115g Hg t− 1 Zn for AZ. Approximately 80.7–104.2 t year− 1 of Hg was emitted to atmosphere from primary Zn production during the period of 2002–2006 in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies investigating possible associations between cytochrome P4501B1 (CYP1B1) polymorphisms and breast cancer risk have been inconsistent. We set out to ascertain whether there might be an association between polymorphisms in exon 2 (codon 119, G→T) and exon 3 (codon 432, G→C) of CYP1B1 and breast cancer in a Chinese Han population in the rural region of Ningxia. Using an allele-specific polymerase chain reaction method and direct DNA sequencing, the presence or absence of the two CYP1B1 polymorphisms was investigated. Genotype and allele frequencies were analyzed in breast cancer cases (n = 152) and healthy age-matched controls (n = 156). The odds ratio (OR) of 119G→T or 432G→C in breast cancer cases and controls was 3.3 (95% CI: 1.28 to 8.28) and 2.8 (95% CI: 1.04 to 7.51), respectively. In addition, the OR for people with both polymorphisms (119T and 432C) was 4.69 (95% CI: 1.97 to 11.19). Our results suggest that certain polymorphisms in the CYP1B1 gene might increase risk for breast cancer among Han Chinese, perhaps because they influence the efficiency of CYP1B1 bio-transformation of oestrogens or pro-carcinogens into DNA-reactive electrophiles that may act as cancer-initiating agents. The article discusses the study about rapid decline in Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 Second (FEV1) and the development of bronchitic symptoms among new Chinese coal miners. The study has aimed to investigate the relationship between the development of bronchitic symptoms and the early rapid decline of FEV1. It has used a two-stage and a mixed model approach to analyze data from 260 newly hired Chinese coal miners who completed approximately 5 to 16 health surveys during 3 years. The study has showed that among new coal miners, a sharp early decline in FEV1 is associated with the development of bronchitic symptoms.

This article reports on a study which characterized the genetic variation of the porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus that caused an outbreak in China from 2010 to 2011. Researchers collected 177 tissue samples from pigs from different farms who had diarrhea and compared them with viruses in other outbreaks. By reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR), researchers learned that a total of 125 samples were confirmed as positive for PED virus.

Environmental covariates are fundamental inputs of digital soil mapping (DSM) based on the soil–environment relationship. It is normal to have invalid values (or recorded as NoData value) in individual environmental covariates in some regions over an area, especially over a large area. Among the two main existing ways to deal with locations with invalid environmental covariate data in DSM, the location-skipping scheme does not predict these locations and, thus, completely ignores the potentially useful information provided by valid covariate values. The void-filling scheme may introduce errors when applying an interpolation algorithm to removing NoData environmental covariate values. In this study, we propose a new scheme called FilterNA that conducts DSM for each individual location with NoData value of a covariate by using the valid values of other covariates at the location. We design a new method (SoLIM-FilterNA) combining the FilterNA scheme with a DSM method, Soil Land Inference Model (SoLIM). Experiments to predict soil organic matter content in the topsoil layer in Anhui Province, China, under different test scenarios of NoData for environmental covariates were conducted to compare SoLIM-FilterNA with the SoLIM combined with the void-filling scheme, the original SoLIM with the location-skipping scheme, and random forest. The experimental results based on the independent evaluation samples show that, in general, SoLIM-FilterNA can produce the lowest errors with a more complete spatial coverage of the DSM result. Meanwhile, SoLIM-FilterNA can reasonably predict uncertainty by considering the uncertainty introduced by applying the FilterNA scheme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
