The article presents abstracts of papers presented at the 61st Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers, Columbus, Ohio on April 18-21, 1965. The paper on the "The Use of Fodder and Livestock Units in Agricultural Geography: A Case Study of Soviet Land Use Policy," by John Anderson focuses on the need for better research tools in agricultural geography. The fodder unit, a concept development by livestock nutritionists, while having some limitations, appears to have some potential for research in agricultural geography.

The article presents a paper that proposes a four step strategy for locating urban population service facilities. Although developed with regard to a specific problem, dealing with a system of public day care centers, the strategy has considerable generality and is applicable to a wide variety of situations and scales. Since population service agencies typically operate under budget, manpower, and other constraints that restrict the number and size of facilities and preclude serving the entire population, particular attention is given to applying the locational strategy to that situation. This includes illustrating the procedure by examining the need for public day care service among the poor in Columbus, Ohio, and locational options for a system of public day care centers in its Model Cities area. The total costs of implementing the locational strategy described in this paper were substantial. Those related to estimating and mapping the demand or need surface for day care service, which in itself would provide valuable information for a service or planning agency, are relatively small.

The article presents information on the developments in the Cataloging Department, to reduce cost, at Battelle Memorial Institute Library. The library is located in Columbus, Ohio and is a privately endowed industrial research foundation. In 1929 Battelle opened its doors with Dr. Horace Gillett, former Chief of the Metallurgy Division of the Bureau of Standards, as director. There were 20 persons on the staff. Since that time Battelle has enlarged its staff to over 2,000 persons. At Battelle the request for speeding up the cataloging process was of vital importance to the men on research projects -- especially short-term contract work.

The article presents information on news about Afro-Americans in the mass media especially with regard to the daily press. In a study of Afro-American news in the daily press of Columbus, Ohio, the author found two of the above possible action programs freely espoused by action groups. Some leaders wanted the newspapers to leave out all identification of race while others were trying to persuade the papers to label in "good" stories while suppressing the label in "bad" ones. All race relations leaders interviewed expressed the idea that the Afro-American is getting better treatment in the Columbus newspapers than he got ten or fifteen years ago. They all agreed that the main change for the better came about within the last 12 years, but they disagreed widely as to exactly when or why the change occurred. The author's content analysis of Columbus newspapers was designed to find out when and under what circumstances the change came about and with which action program goal it was most consistent. Admitting wide differences in methodologies, in units and in samples, comparisons were made, nevertheless, between the handling of Negro news by Columbus newspapers in 1938-1948 and the handling of Negro news in other places as reported by the research of various analysts. So far as amount of news is concerned, the present study seems to show that Columbus newspapers printed a little more Afro-American news than did the average metropolitan daily

The relationship between social climate and group performance has now been investigated in several types of civilian populations. In many of these studies, equalitarian climates are described as relating positively to such variables as morale, social cohesion, and group productivity. In other instances no apparent relationship between equalitarian climates and general productivity has been discerned. The presence of discrepant findings and the tendency toward over-representation of laboratory subject groups in such research suggests a need for replication of the studies in a wider range of populations. It seems particularly desirable to expand the investigation into functioning groups in the major social institutions. This article is a report on an analysis of the relationship between equalitarian social attitudes and group performance in a military setting. The project reported here is one phase of a larger study of bombardment crews now being conducted by the Personnel Research Board of the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. The subject crews were observed in training rather than in combat, hence, the relevance of the conclusions for combat performance is conjectural.

This study is an attempt to test the hypothesis which the economist, Gunnar Myrdal termed "the Negro rank order of discriminations." He states that his observations led him to believe that whites in the U.S. insisted on the retention of discriminatory practices against Negroes in a specific order according to the type of discrimination. He asserted that they insisted most on retaining the barriers against Negro men having access to white women for sexual intercourse or marriage. Myrdal further hypothesized that the Negro's rank order of discriminations is parallel but inverse to the white man's rank. The Negro, according to Myrdal, resents and resists economic discriminations most and discriminations in sex relations and intermarriage least. It was found that generally Negroes in Columbus, Ohio resent all discriminations moderately or very much. A second general finding is that the sensitivity of Negroes to discrimination can be quantified. On a basis of the findings of this study there are no significant differences between the sensitivity of male and female Negroes to discrimination.

Pioneer work by researcher James Bossard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1931, suggested that residential propinquity of mates at the time of marriage is a factor inmate selection. Bossard examined five thousand consecutive marriage licenses in which one or both of the applicants were residents of Philadelphia. The study found that one out of four couples lived within two city blocks of each other; one third of the couples lived within five blocks or less of each other. It was the purpose of the present study to apply more rigorous techniques to determine the validity of residential propinquity as a factor in mate selection in Columbus, Ohio. The first refinement of Bossard's study was to shift the years of study away from the depression of the early thirties. The possibility that the economic conditions of 1931 were responsible for Bossard's findings had to be eliminated. The second change from Bossard's study was to discard information relating to Negroes as far as possible. Bossard had included them in his study, admitting that one ninth of the city's population was Negro. A third refinement was to employ the standard city block equal to one eighth of a mile as the unit of measurement rather than to count individual city blocks as if they were equal.

This article focuses on the conference titled Religion in Country Life organized by the American Country Life Association held in Columbus, Ohio. The first part of the conference was devoted to diagnosing the patient, to finding out what is wrong with the country church. It was agreed that before remedies could be applied, it would be necessary to find out the diseases from which the patient was suffering. The outstanding fact, the fact upon which everyone was agreed, was that the country church today does not serve the needs of modern rural U.S. The declining influence of the country church is due to its failure to serve the needs of rural people. Because the churches are failing to serve the needs of the people, the people are losing interest in the churches. It was unanimously agreed that this was the most successful conference so far held by the American Country Life Association. There were 260 members present; and, all told, around 700 people representing practically all the states and the Canadian provinces attended the discussions.

The article reports developments in the studies for improving instruction systems in elementary courses conducted by the Departments of Botany and Zoology of the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. The first step in the task of improving examinations in botany and zoology was to define the objective which students were expected to attain as a result of instruction in these subjects. Since the instructors in the biology department are studying a variety of problems involved in improving their teaching effectiveness it is difficult to select for report the studies which may be of greatest significance. The improvement of examinations makes it possible to determine the effect of changes in instructional methods more accurately.

A conceptual model of the effects of residential relocation of voters upon their voting behavior is elaborated; in this model relocation is related directly to instability of voting preferences, susceptibility to short-term influences and to the weakness of a neighborhood or contextual effect. The interaction effects of voluntary organization affiliation and political involvement are also discussed. A number of hypotheses are derived from the conceptual model and tested with a non parametric measure of association on the basis of survey data from Columbus, Ohio. It is found that the major hypotheses are sustained though the data on the interaction effects of involvement are more ambiguous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the development of a unified science in the high school curriculum, by the science faculty and staff of The Ohio State University School and Center for School Experimentation. This is intended for students of high ability and substituted for chemistry and for physics in one or two year sequences. Unified science refers to a structured broad area sequential program in science where interpretative generalizations form the organizing aspect of study and where content is drawn in as needed. Big ideas of science that are considered important to scientific literacy serve as interpretative generalizations. The objective of unified science is to help the students develop a logical and interrelated picture of the physical world by mastery of facts and concepts of science.

The article presents a comparison of teacher education students and non-teacher education students at the Ohio State University on measures of academic aptitude and achievement. The different measures of academic aptitude and achievement used in the evaluation include: Ohio State Psychological Examination (OSPE), Ohio State Mathematics Screening Test, Ohio State English Placement Test, American College Test and cumulative point hour ratio. The results of the assessment found that non-education students always scored higher on the OSPE and the Mathematics Screening Test than the education students.

The research program of any college of commerce ought to give first consideration to the educational situation but the second function is also a matter of importance particularly when it will always be necessary in undertaking any business research to get the cooperation of businessmen who can furnish with proper facilities. There are certain studies that are growing out of those that were previously made. One of these is a study of the unit selling expense and involves a comparison between those establishments which employ salesman on a commission basis, those where salesman are employed on a salary basis and those concerns which employ salesman on a mixed basis. The independent accountants who are the accountants, one might say, of Ohio and particularly those who do not represent the large accounting firms with many branches are interested in a project that will involve a study of expense ratios and balance sheet ratio with which one is familiar. Whether the accounting firms will cooperate by furnishing with information in regard to revenue statements and assets has not been fully determined. Two studies are being conducted at Ohio State which have not been classified as accounting studies and yet which seem to be likely to degenerate into accounting studies. One of these is the study of merchandise control.

The article presents information on a symposium titled Man's Survival in a Changing World held on September 5, 1968 at the 19th Annual Meeting of the American Institute of Biological Sciences Inc. in Columbus, Ohio. Congressman George P. Miller of California, was one of the four speakers to address the symposium. Miller stated that the International Biological Program (IBP) appears to be the best and most available instrument for stimulating and upgrading the activities of American biologists.

The Department of Accounting at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, has established an Accounting Hall of Fame to which will be elected living North Americans who have made outstanding contributions at any time to the field of accounting--public, private, governmental, or educational. Additional elections will also be made to honor posthumously those whose contribution would have warranted election if this Hall of Fame had been established earlier. The faculty of the Department of Accounting has appointed a Nominating Board of forty-five, consisting of fifteen public accountants, fifteen industrial and governmental accountants, and fifteen accounting educators. Appointments to the Nominating Board will run for three years (except the initial appointments), and one-third of each class will be appointed each year in order to maintain the full membership of the Board. Accountants elected to the Hall of Fame will be invited to attend the annual Institute on Accounting sponsored each May at the University.
