Bringing together literature from music education, posthumanism, sound studies and ethnomusicology, this article considers what sound 'does' in music education spaces. Within posthumanism, the role of sound, as a manifestation of material-human entanglements, is under-theorised. This article, diffractively plays with the literature and evidence from a PhD project and a listening walk with pre-service music teachers, allowing the reverberations (as the continued effects and affects of bringing these materials into contact with each other), to spark generative thinking about how sound in music education is conceived. In doing so, the article presents three reverberations that challenge humanist conceptions of sound/music in education. The first considers all sound (human and non-human) as voice, which is transindividual (Chadwick in Flint [2022]. "More-than-Human Methodologies in Qualitative Research: Listening to the Leafblower." Qualitative Research 22 (4): 521–541. ) , the second considers the role of sound as an invitation to 'world-with' (Barad [2007]. In this contribution, an investigation is made into the abandonment of a very large infrastructural investment by the UK government. It was the HS2 (High Speed 2) train 'assemblage' for the 345 miles from Leeds in the North to London. It occurred in the belief that such expenditure would 'level-up' the worsening regional economic disparities between the two regions and render the North (dubbed the 'Northern Powerhouse' by successive governments) 'competitive'. In reality, there was no evidence in support of the idea that a faster rail service would have this effect. Critics realized London's advantage could not be competed against. This was because its advantage as an unregulated 'tax haven' had been entrenched since even before William the Conqueror's invasion in 1066. Our take on this débâcle is that it was caused by hubris on the part of successive governments, culminating in the growth of distrust between politicians and the people, including 'experts' who were singled out for special ministerial disdain. The analysis explores 'assemblage' theory and its psychological origins, in which desire has come to substitute for thought in the UK political arena. Accordingly, desire has been swallowed up by 'competitiveness', meaning mistakes were made due to hubris, narcissism and criminality because of the politics of 'we know better' on the part of the political élite. The "Talking with Voices" (TwV) approach is a novel, formulation-driven approach to helping people who hear distressing voices. It is based on an understanding of voice-hearing as a relational phenomenon, often linked to trauma. Therapy involves facilitation of dialogical engagement between hearers and their voices. There are as yet few empirical studies of the approach. The current study explored experiences of the TwV approach from the perspectives of voice-hearers and also of their voices. Ten qualitative interviews were subjected to Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Both hearers and their voices felt that the TwV approach can be a powerful enabler of positive change, and that it provides a valuable means of working through past trauma. Establishing a safe base – with time to build trust in the process – was considered key, as were the personal qualities of the facilitator, including openness, courage and a non-judgemental approach. Participants also saw flexibility as important, including the ability to try things out within the work. It was also important that the ideas behind the approach made sense to the participant. Perceived barriers included the medicalised nature of current services and the lack of availability of the TwV approach. The findings provide support for the acceptability and value of dialogical approaches to helping people who hear voices. In particular, they suggest that participating in TwV can help people develop an understanding of, and a more peaceful relationship with, their voices. The development of more resilient and sustainable food systems depends on the integration of ecological and sustainability concepts into agricultural systems. One proposed way to achieve this is to shift to 'agroecology'. This concept appears promising, but there is a need to translate it in specific socio-ecological contexts, given that agroecological innovations develop locally and are responsive to local conditions. The objective of this paper is to examine the relevance of an Agroecological Transition for the Special Region of Yogyakarta (SRY), Indonesia, with an emphasis on farmers' perspectives and experiences. Data were gathered from policy documents, field observations and 34 semi-structured interviews with farmers. Findings indicate that although there is limited discourse about agroecology in current policies, some farmers and NGOs have developed agroecological niche innovations. It may be possible to up-scale these niches to a broader context, with planning policies having a potential role in supporting this transition. Furthermore, farmers identify that the planning system can contribute to food sovereignty and Agroecological Transition by preserving agricultural land, managing regional cropping patterns and supporting the development of urban agriculture. The five Starra iron oxide copper–gold (IOCG) deposits, which are located in the Cloncurry district of the Mount Isa Inlier, NW Queensland, are hosted in a N-trending zone of deformed iron-rich metasedimentary rocks that are underlain by two mineralogically distinct mafic–intermediate meta-igneous rocks. Copper–Au mineralisation is subdivided into two stages—an early main stage that transitioned from a magnetite-dominated Cu substage comprising chalcopyrite, pyrite, biotite and chlorite, to a hematite–muscovite-bearing Cu–Au substage with chalcopyrite, bornite and rare chalcocite, as well as Au–Ag-tellurides and native Au. This second stage was followed by a subordinate but nonetheless important carbonate–quartz–barite vein stage with minor but locally high-grade Cu–Au mineralisation characterised by abundant chalcocite and bornite, minor native bismuth and wittichenite (Cu3BiS3), together with minor Au–Ag telluride minerals. Bornite in these carbonate–quartz–barite veins contains considerable amounts of Au (>10 ppm), which appears to be deported either as lattice substitution in the bornite crystal structure or as homogeneously distributed Au0 nanoparticles. An earlier, coarse-grained mafic intrusion was affected by early Na–Ca alteration, whereas a second mafic intrusion lacks evidence of Na–Ca alteration but was exposed to K–Fe alteration and subsequent mineralisation at Starra 222. Mushketovite (magnetite after specular hematite) is only observed in ironstone lodes proximal to the mafic–intermediate rocks. The close spatial and mineralogical associations of the mafic–intermediate bodies and the ironstone lodes point to a stronger link between magmatic activity and IOCG mineralisation than has previously been recognised at Starra. Remobilisation of gold by late-stage hydrothermal fluids aided by the relatively low fluid temperatures during the main pulse of Cu–Au mineralisation refined gold grades at Starra, making it a relatively gold-rich IOCG deposit. We show that the Cu–Au deposits of the Starra trend feature mineralogical and geochemical elements common to both Cloncurry IOCG deposits (e.g. abundant magnetite) and IOCG deposits of the Tennant Creek district (e.g. Au–Cu–Bi mineralisation; hematite–bornite–chalcocite assemblages), making them a unique and important member of this complex family of deposits. Mafic–intermediate sills below Starra ore deposits indicate a potential link between magmatic activity and IOCG mineralisation. Mushketovite associated with chalcopyrite mineralisation indicates that the mineralising fluid was initially reduced. Different radiogenic Pb isotope compositions in Cu sulfides, hematite and calcite require multiple Pb sources, which is consistent with distinct fluids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article makes the case for interpreting Evelyn Waugh's The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold (1957) as a transcoded performance of King Lear, directed and enacted through the hallucinations of the eponymous writer-protagonist. Suffering from writers' block and bromide poisoning, Pinfold unconsciously re-creates and inhabits the roles of the king, his fool and Cordelia within a green world setting suggested by his own disordered mind. This exegesis of Waugh's intricate method of textual adaptation, which encompasses numerous additional hypotexts from The Tempest to Waugh's own contemporaries, urges Pinfold's recognition as an exemplar of criticism-through-practice that may be applied across a wide spectrum of symbiotic creative relationships. Reconceptualising Pinfold in this way affords a new understanding of the later text's notoriously baffling conclusion, which in turn generates a new lens through which to view King Lear. Throughout his ordeal, the embattled Pinfold demonstrates his commitment to the inseparable qualities of modesty and truthfulness that define Cordelia's character. By ultimately handing Pinfold-as-Cordelia the victory Shakespeare denied her, Waugh announces both his adaptation and adapted text as meditations on the nature of, and need for, personal integrity and the right to emotional privacy. How should we teach recent history to uncover the links between social work and human rights? To answer this question, we critically analyze recent events in Chile with an emphasis on the training process of social work students. A series of recent events have revived the debate on memory, the guarantee of non-repetition, and human rights. The estallido social (2019), attempts to reform the constitution inherited from the military dictatorship, and the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the coup (2023) all confirm the importance of training policies, remembrance, and teaching practices in transmitting to new generations the experience gained while assisting victims of human rights violations and crimes against humanity. We review three time frames, which we illustrate through interviews and examples of collaborative and teaching work that contextualize social work education in human rights, exploring possible ways to promote remembrance and support the search for truth, justice, and guarantees of non-repetition. To evaluate prediction accuracy of pre- and post-DMEK keratometry (K) and total keratometry (TK) values for IOL power calculations in Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) eyes undergoing DMEK with cataract surgery (triple DMEK). Retrospective cross-sectional multicenter study of 55 FECD eyes (44 patients) that underwent triple DMEK between 2019 and 2022 between two centers in USA and Europe. Swept-source optical coherence tomography biometry (IOLMaster 700) was used for pre- and post-DMEK measurements. K and TK values were used for power calculations with ten formulae (Barrett Universal II (BUII), Castrop, Cooke K6, EVO 2.0, Haigis, Hoffer Q, Hoffer QST, Holladay I, Kane, and SRK/T). Mean error, mean absolute error (MAE), standard deviation, and percentage of eyes within ±0.50/±1.00 diopters (D) were calculated. Studied formulae were additionally adjusted using a method published previously (IOLup1D Method), which increases the IOL power by 1D. While both eyes from the same patient were considered for descriptive statistics, we restricted to one eye per individual (44 eyes for statistical comparisons. MAEs for all formulae were lower for post-DMEK K and TK than pre-DMEK K and TK by an average of 0.24 and 0.47 D, respectively. The lowest MAE was 0.49 D for Kane using post-DMEK TK, and the highest MAE was 1.05 D for BUII using pre-DMEK TK. Most IOLup1D formulae had lower MAEs than pre-DMEK K and TK formulae. The IOLup1D Method should be used instead of pre-DMEK K and TK values for triple DMEK in FECD eyes. Using post-DMEK TK values for cataract surgery after DMEK provides better refractive accuracy than any of the three studied methods used for triple DMEK procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study characterizes the patterns and timing of CLL treatment and, to our knowledge, is the first to identify social vulnerability factors associated with CLL treatment receipt in the Medicare population. A total of 3508 Medicare beneficiaries diagnosed with CLL from 2017 to 2019 were identified. We reported the proportion of individuals who received CLL treatment and the time until the first CLL treatment receipt after the first observed claim with a CLL diagnosis. Logistic regression and time-to-event models provided adjusted odds ratios and hazard ratios associated with baseline individual-level and county-level factors. Sixteen percent of individuals received CLL treatment, and the median follow-up time was 540 d. The median time to receipt of CLL treatment was 61 d. Older age and residence in a county ranked high in social vulnerability (as defined by minority status and language) were negatively associated with treatment receipt and time to treatment receipt. Individuals experiencing homelessness have a range of unmet needs during homelessness. Less is known about how these daily living needs evolve in the transition to housing and how existing services are supporting individuals to meet these needs. Using the capabilities approach, we conducted a cross-sectional qualitative study with two participant groups (unhoused; housed between 1 and 24 months). Using thematic analysis, we generated five meta-themes to describe the experiences and compare these two groups: (1) Managing mental health and substance use; (2) Creating connection and community; (3) Involvement in something meaningful; (4) Emotional adaptation to impoverished living conditions; and (5) The helping relationship as foundation. Our findings indicate that for individuals to thrive following homelessness, researchers, service providers, and policymakers need to design and implement strategies that target outcomes beyond tenancy sustainment. These key strategies include: (1) facilitating access to resources that enable thriving following homelessness; (2) developing measures that orient programs and policies to target thriving rather than sustaining a tenancy; and (3) including persons with lived experiences of homelessness in the design and delivery of services and in the evaluation of new and existing programs. Literature regarding simulation for learning interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) indicates a need to include a range of health professions and to focus on students' development of team communication and conflict resolution skills in day-to-day healthcare delivery. This study evaluated the impact of interprofessional simulation for occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics, and nursing students on interprofessional collaboration competencies, specifically collaborative communication and conflict resolution during day-to-day interactions, and their intention for IPCP during placement. A series of simulations featuring the potential for interprofessional conflict and involving explicit coaching on communication and conflict resolution were conducted. A single cohort pre-test post-test design included the Students' Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education Revised (SPICE-R), the Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey (ICCAS), and an open response survey question on future intended practice. A total of 237 students participated in the simulation experience. Overall scores and scores on all IPCP competencies in the ICASS (n = 193) and SPICE-R (n = 226) improved for all professions post-simulation. The mean score of the ICCAS increased for 98% of the respondents and similarly the mean score of the SPICE-R increased for 71% of the respondents. Open-ended responses indicated students' intentions to pursue self-leadership in IPCP. Students who participated in an interprofessional simulation reported perceived improvements in IPCP competencies and were encouraged to initiate IPCP when on placement in the practice setting. Regarding the construction of strict and base radical classes for the variety of associative rings, we show that "subring" and "accessible subring" are two of a number of substructures that can be used in constructing a radical class. The substructures we focus on are set properties that are transitive across accessible subrings. These substructures allow us to look beyond those that are related by the binary operations of the ring itself, to ones that may only be related by containment. Communication is pivotal for the emergence of coordination and cooperation within teams. As a result, communication plays an important role in team dynamics as better communication between teammates can lead to more efficient and successful teams. To better understand communication dynamics and their impact on team performance, we develop a modelling framework of two-agent interaction dynamics in a discrete-time fashion. Our proposed model considers the communications between two agents based on each agent's personality and their individual impact on any received communication. Combined with data, we perform mathematical analysis and bifurcation diagrams to study how agents' personality and training may impact the quality of the team's communications and therefore their performance in task completion. The validations and parameter estimations of our model from data could potentially help us to select team members that could work together efficiently, and train members in the established team to collaborate better. Abortion is a politicized and stigmatized health procedure that has received considerable attention in popular discourse in the past year. The present study investigated how often people (N = 235) talk about abortion throughout their lifespan and within the past 12 months, with whom they have these conversations, and which conversations were most memorable. Key findings from the present study, framed through the Theory of Memorable Messages and the Social Ecological Model, include that most participants had at least one conversation about abortion in the past 12 months. Within the past 12 months, the most common conversation partners for abortion-related communication were friends, followed by mothers and romantic partners. Over the lifespan, but prior to the past 12 months, a majority of participants had at least one conversation about abortion. Similarly, friends were the most frequent source of abortion-related communication over the lifespan, followed by mothers and romantic partners. Many of the conversations within the past 12 months focused heavily on the overturn of Roe v. Wade or navigating a post-Roe world with a body that could become pregnant, or as someone who cared about people who could become pregnant. Prior to the past 12 months, participants characterized abortion communication as tense, religious, pro-choice, descriptive of the women who might have abortions, relating to specific abortion disclosures, or political. Within the past 12 months, memorable conversations about abortion were personal or relational, and were often prompted by discussions surrounding Roe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a study undertaken to examine the content validity of the French-language version of the Comprehensive Assessment of Psychopathic Personality (CAPP), a lexically-based conceptual model and clinical assessment of psychopathy, 204 French-speaking mental health professionals rated the symptoms covered by the CAPP for prototypicality. The majority of the symptoms were deemed to be "moderately" to "highly" prototypical of psychopathy. Of the model's six domains, Dominance, Attachment and Self were considered more prototypical than Emotional, Behavioral and Cognitive. Results were consistent with those of other prototypicality studies. Descriptives analyses suggested that the ratings of English-speaking mental health professionals were higher than their French-speaking counterparts. However, the effect sizes were small according to the Cohen's d analyses. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that Attachment was the only unidimensional domain. Finally, exploratory factor analysis yielded three factors—Egotism, Interpersonal rigidity, and Lack of responsibility. Human resource outsourcing (HRO) has been an important development in the HRM function since the 1990s as organizations seek cost reduction and competitive advantages. Does HRO enhance organizational competitiveness and strategic capability? Based on a systematic review of 97 journal articles published between 1999 and 2022, we identify several key patterns of existing research on HRO, such as a heavy reliance on quantitative methods, the dominance of traditional economic theories, and a focus mainly on the perspective of client organizations. However, whether HRO services can accomplish organizational strategic capability remains equivocal. To unpack the relationship between HRO and organizational performance, we establish an HRO process model which includes several blocks: HRO decision, HRO implementation, HRO perception, HRO evaluation, and HRO maintenance. Among these blocks, there is a dynamic interplay between multiple stakeholders across fields. We call for future HRO research and practice to pay attention to employee perception to enhance HRO's effect and value as part of strategic human resource management, thus extending HR system strength theory. We also call for future research to clarify the contextual role of emerging technology in promoting HRO, given the increasing use of digital technology and HR data analytics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This editorial is intended to provide a brief overview of the evolution of a selection of European space economies and policies introduced to mitigate the devastating effects of at least five crises most have faced in the past decade or more. In a time of great fragility in economy, politics and society, concatenations of the five crises and more have challenged planners to come up with new solutions to long-standing urban and regional problems (otherwise 'opportunities'). The five crises focused on here are: Green Transition; Great Financial Crisis; Euro Crisis; Migration and Refugee Asylum Crisis; COVID-19 Crisis. Occasional papers in the Special Issue that follows refer to other crisis effects such as; Ukraine resistance to its war against the Russian invasion; the Israeli-Palestinian conflict of October 2023; Austerity policies and associated urban and regional disparities with inter-regional tensions; and the socio-economic effects of liberalization of Eastern Europe. Naltrexone is a mu-opioid receptor antagonist increasingly used as an analgesic for chronic pain at low doses. This retrospective, observational cohort study was conducted at an academic medical center to evaluate low-dose naltrexone (LDN) efficacy and describe its use in routine clinical practice. Adults receiving LDN, doses <10 mg for ≥1 month, seen at an outpatient pain clinic from January 1, 2014 to April 1, 2022 were included. The primary outcome was change in the Pain, Enjoyment of Life, and General Activity (PEG) score after LDN. Thirty-one patients were included. Median age was 50 years and 71% were female. Median duration of pain at baseline was 5 years. Mean PEG scores were 7.27 ± 1.39 and 6.62 ± 2.04 at baseline and follow-up, respectively. Mean difference was 0.66 (95% CI [0.10–1.21], p = 0.022). Eighty-seven percent (27) of patients discontinued LDN, 52% (16) for lack of benefit, 23% (7) for loss of benefit, 10% (3) for side effects, and 3% (1) for other reasons. Seven (23%) reported side effects. LDN was associated with a statistically significant reduction in PEG in adult chronic pain patients, however the clinical significance is unclear as over 75% of patients discontinued LDN due to lack of benefit. The year 2023 witnessed intensified geopolitical tensions, military conflicts, and international economic sanctions, with heightened risks and uncertainties for businesses, especially multinational enterprises. In this editorial for 2024, we focus on two phenomena—international sanction and mental health—as critical issues for human resource management research and practice. These two issues are closely related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Goal 3: Good health and wellbeing and Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions). We draw on dynamic capability theory to illustrate how organizations can develop corporate capabilities to survive and thrive in a volatile global business environment. Despite the shared research interest in multinational enterprises (MNEs) in international business (IB) and international human resource management (IHRM), the two fields of studies have been criticized for the lack of dialogues and collaborations that might be beneficial to extending the scope of knowledge in each. At the same time, both IB and IHRM have expanded into the international development area, evidenced by the growing interest in the role of MNEs in promoting or hampering the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This perspective paper aims to address some of the critiques, challenge existing assumptions, and provide examples of research that critically examines the role of MNEs in promoting or hampering the realization of the SDGs. This document explores different approaches to targeting c-RAF, a protein involved in the growth of cancer cells with RAS mutations. The authors discuss the limitations of current kinase inhibitors and the need for novel strategies to exploit c-RAF activity. They examine the use of disruptor peptides and small molecule mimetics to inhibit c-RAF and prevent cancer cell growth. The article emphasizes the complexity of the relationship between RAS mutational status and c-RAF dependency and highlights the importance of further research in this area. This article examines the political consequences of environmental nongovernment organization (ENGO) involvement in protected area conservation in Australia. Rapid growth of a nongovernment protected area (NGPA) estate this century has involved a range of individuals, communities, First Nations, and ENGOs, and has been closely tied to government policy and private finance. Although NGPA conservation achievements have been profound, there has been limited examination of what expanded nongovernment involvement, responsibility, and leadership mean for the practice and governance of nature conservation. Thematic analysis of twenty-four key informant interviews and selective gray literature identifies how financing, accountability, and partisan politics are emerging as key domains in shaping an NGPA estate that reflects a closer alignment with capital and market forces. ENGOs are playing a key role in crafting new political conditions for protected area conservation, where their role in neoliberal governance is not just service delivery, but statecraft and agenda setting. ENGOs are increasingly casting protected area conservation as apolitical, and thereby a bipartisan activity, driven by a "pragmatic" agenda that seeks to secure private financing for land ownership and management obligations. Frameworks of accountability to donors shape ENGO practices and conceptions of conservation through exposure to novel market mechanisms. As a result, ENGO operation permits limited space for plural, ideological, and structural debate about protected area conservation, the public interest, and the root causes of ecological crises to which it responds. Hearing loss is one of the most common sensory impairments and hearing aids are the most common unmet assistive device need among individuals with a disability. The benefits of hearing interventions are well-documented as they are known to deter the sequalae of hearing loss including social isolation, poor mental health, falls and cognitive decline. Identifying trends in hearing aid users can provide valuable information for improving access to hearing loss interventions. Data were retrieved from ICES databases that were used to generate a cohort of 372,448 individuals in Ontario, Canada, who first claimed hearing aids between April 2007 and March 2018 through the Assistive Devices Program. The data indicated that the frequency distribution of hearing aids has steadily inclined since 2007. The mean age of hearing aid users was 70.25 ± 14.70 years and higher neighbourhood income quintile was associated with greater hearing aid use (p < 0.001). Most first claims occurred after visiting primary care physicians (70.60%) compared with otolaryngology (13.39%). An examination of clinical comorbidities revealed hypertension (63.41%), and diabetes (24.93%) to be the most common. Regression analysis demonstrated a positive associated between age and most comorbidities. Furthermore, higher neighbourhood income quintiles were associated with a reduced risk of having the examined comorbidities. This study examines patient demographics and clinical comorbidities in a cohort of hearing aid users in Ontario. The results identify associations between demographics and comorbidities that provide information relevant for improving access to hearing interventions and clinical decision-making in primary care. Screening for hearing loss (using an audiogram) in elderly individuals that manage multiple comorbidities, and any patient with significant risk factors for hearing loss (e.g., noise exposure history, prior ototoxic medications, prior head injury, history of ear surgery, family history of hearing loss) will identify deficits and direct appropriate hearing interventions. Improving access to care in low-income communities should include community-based education around expectation management and communication strategies to reinforce proper use and care of hearing devices. Nature-based solutions are seen to benefit both society and biodiversity. However, research into their future resilience is required. Soft capping is a nature-based conservation strategy that mimics the natural colonisation of plants on top of ruined walls and reduces rates of material deterioration. To remain effective, soft capping species must be tolerant of future climatic conditions. We use the Maxent species distribution model to assess the resilience of soft capping species to low and high emission scenarios across Britain and Ireland. We assess the mid- and end-century presence probability of four native and archaeophyte species used in soft capping (Sedum album, S. acre, S. anglicum and Saxifraga granulata). Future presence probabilities were calculated using the climate models HadGEM3-GC31-LL, IPSL-CM6A-LR and MIROC6. Results suggest that current sedum-based soft caps will remain viable until mid-century with additional maintenance (e.g. watering) during droughts, although soft caps predominantly formed of Sedum album may be prone to failure in south-eastern England. In the future, species more resilient to arid conditions may need to be preferentially selected for soft capping to ensure resilience under a warming climate. Despite the bourgeoning interest in talent management (TM) in the last two decades, limited research has been carried out to understand the diffusion of TM strategies and practices from home-country headquarters to their subsidiaries in host countries. Furthermore, extant firm-level research on TM tends to neglect the role of the macro-level context, particularly in emerging economies where talent shortage is acute and their institutional distance is large, with headquarters in developed countries. This study fills these knowledge gaps by exploring the TM of German multinational corporations (MNCs) and their subsidiaries in China. Drawing on qualitative data collected from 42 semi-structured interviews with senior managers, human resource professionals, and operations managers from six German MNCs and their subsidiaries in China, the study uncovers headquarters-subsidiary relations. We identify a portfolio of what we refer to as 'institutional shapers' and develop a model for future research. This study contributes to extant knowledge by contextualizing multi-level TM shapers from an institutional-cultural perspective, supported by cross-country empirical data based on informant triangulation. We argue that intellectual risk-taking offers unacknowledged potential for the writing classroom. But in order to incorporate intellectual risk into the RCWS classroom, we need a theory of its role and pedagogical practices to operationalize it. Our article puts forth a theory of intellectual risk-taking as a rhetorical, deliberative activity and offers six pedagogical topoi (emerging from survey data) where instructors and students are likely to encounter risks in their writing process. The STEM climate is overall less welcoming for queer students, and is especially harrowing for transgender, nonbinary, and students with additional gender non-conforming identities (TNBGNC+). Professional STEM societies provide students with a range of resources that help them persist in STEM, though qualitative research shows that such societies geared toward queer and trans students may offer less professional and academic resources and prioritize identity management. The objective of our research is to identify, among queer and trans students, whether there are differences between how TNBGNC+ students and gender majoritized students access resources important in STEM persistence across professional society types, including those societies organized to serve women, racial/ethnic minoritized groups, queer and trans groups, as well as those science societies and chapters without a stated group focus. The society resources we focus on include: sense of community, social networking, professional resources, leadership skills, academic resources, reduced isolation related to identities, and perceptions that societies in which they may participate are helpful to them in their degree progress. This study offers an analysis of survey data from 477 queer and trans STEM undergraduates relating to their participation in STEM professional societies. To conduct this research, we embraced and enacted recommendations by scholars on strategies and frameworks to queer our methodology, survey, and analysis. We found that at oSTEM, TNBGNC+ students may not be benefitting to the same extent as gender majoritized students when it comes to feeling in community with other members and having opportunities for social networking. However, TNBGNC+ students may benefit more from a reduction in isolation related to their identities. Differences in how SWE served TNBGNC+ students echoes previous work, and may speak to the society's organization around the cisgender, patriarchal framework. SHPE's relative success with TNBGNC+ students also reproduces existing work, suggesting the society may be more largely scaffolded for more affirming environments writ large. As well, that science in comparison to industry chapters were more beneficial to TNBGNC+ students brings forward possible differences between science and industry chapters, in which the former may be influenced more by the scholarship and science of gender, while the latter, with its more business and public focus, could be more influenced by dominant narratives in STEM. This work has implications for societies when it comes to enacting policies to cultivate more inclusive community environments and buttress potentially unequal access to social networking as well as professional and academic resources. At the same time, there is room for oSTEM to augment how it supports TNBGNC+ students with academic and professional resources and benefit students' progress in their degree programs. The welfare of fishes and aquatic invertebrates is important, and several jurisdictions have included these taxa under welfare regulation in recent years. Regulation of welfare requires use of scientifically validated welfare criteria. This is why applying Mertonian skepticism toward claims for sentience and pain in fishes and aquatic invertebrates is scientifically sound and prudent, particularly when those claims are used to justify legislation regulating the welfare of these taxa. Enacting welfare legislation for these taxa without strong scientific evidence is a societal and political choice that risks creating scientific and interpretational problems as well as major policy challenges, including the potential to generate significant unintended consequences. In contrast, a more rigorous science-based approach to the welfare of aquatic organisms that is based on verified, validated and measurable endpoints is more likely to result in "win-win" scenarios that minimize the risk of unintended negative impacts for all stakeholders, including fish and aquatic invertebrates. The authors identify as supporters of animal welfare, and emphasize that this issue is not about choosing between welfare and no welfare for fish and aquatic invertebrates, but rather to ensure that important decisions about their welfare are based on scientifically robust evidence. These ten reasons are delivered in the spirit of organized skepticism to orient legislators, decision makers and the scientific community, and alert them to the need to maintain a high scientific evidential bar for any operational welfare indicators used for aquatic animals, particularly those mandated by legislation. Established representations of donkeys in western literature and popular culture have often been negative, portraying the animals as stupid, inept, and bad tempered. To understand whether such representations are reflected in contemporary understandings of donkeys, we constructed a digitized body of texts (a corpus) from contemporary (public-facing) news articles and (public-produced) social media posts about donkeys, which we analyzed using quantitative and qualitative language analysis techniques drawn from corpus linguistics and discourse analysis. We supplemented this with focus groups conducted with members of the public to gather insights and reflections on key patterns of representation in two key news texts identified in the linguistic analysis. This combined approach, which is novel in its application to animal welfare topics, revealed that donkeys are most commonly represented as figures of entertainment, ridicule, and as victims of hardship and suffering (i.e., animals in need). We argue that such representations can sideline, obscure and "invisibilize" the real animals, leading to persistent misunderstandings and false conceptions about donkeys, which are further perpetuated through language use and can be difficult to disrupt and change. These findings have important implications for animal welfare, education programs, and public communication about donkeys. Finally, we highlight areas where incorrect, unhelpful, and potentially damaging representations can be challenged by those seeking to improve the contemporary status of donkeys. The concept of schizophrenia has been contested since its inception. Over the last decades, criticism of the concept has become increasingly mainstream and calls for its abandonment have intensified. Nevertheless, the concept remains widely used and retains taken-for-granted status within much mental health research and practice. The combination of its contested status and continued use raises questions about how it is used and with what implications for people who receive the diagnosis. This study explores how 'schizophrenia' is spoken about by mental health professionals who use the diagnosis in day-to-day practice. Eight interviews with professionals across professions were analysed using Foucauldian Discourse Analysis. Two striking and consistent themes were identified. The first is a discrepancy between the way participants talked about 'schizophrenia' to the interviewer, and the way they described talking about it in clinical encounters. The second is the potentially entrapping impact of the wider discourses participants drew on in talk about clinical encounters. The study concludes with reflections on how those working in the mental health field can break out of this discursive entrapment, and help the people they work with do the same. The stressors that National Football League (NFL) athletes face are well-described and documented with regard to multisystem afflictions and injury prevalence. However, the majority of literature discusses the short-term effects rather than long-term outcomes of playing professional football. The purpose of this study was to characterize the long-term musculoskeletal issues in the retired NFL population. Publications from CENTRAL, Scopus, Medline, PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched from database inception to February 2021. A total of 9 cohort studies evaluating lower extremity arthritis in retired NFL athletes were included for review. Two reviewers extracted data from the individual studies, including demographic information (age, body mass index, length of career, position), injury descriptions (location of injury, number of injuries, diagnoses), and procedure (total knee and or hip arthroplasty) frequency. Arthritis in retired NFL players was more than twice as prevalent than the general United States male population (95% CI: 2.1–2.3). Ankle osteoarthritis was directly correlated with the number of foot and ankle injuries. Players <50 years of age had a 16.1 and 13.8 times higher risk of undergoing TKA and THA, respectively, when compared to the general population. In older age groups, this trend held with retired NFL players being at least 4.3 and 4.6 times more likely than members of the general population to undergo TKA and THA, respectively. This review demonstrates that the effects of NFL-related lower extremity injuries extend beyond the players' careers and present a higher risk for early-onset osteoarthritis and overall frequency of undergoing total knee and hip arthroplasty. Five years ago, we reviewed the state of memorable message scholarship in communication, with special attention to the utility of memorable message research in health communication. Since then, works advancing the theoretical and practical applicability of the construct have continued to emerge. In this article, we discuss the trends in published memorable message research over the last five years. Since 2017, thirty-four additional peer-reviewed articles focusing on memorable messages as a central concept have been published. Health communication as a subset of the field (as well as the journal Health Communication) see a higher concentration of these publications than other areas. In this review, we concentrate on the use of theory within recent memorable message work. Although much of the memorable message research continues to be atheoretical, more work utilizing control theory, the theory of memorable messages, and communicated narrative sense-making characterize the recent literature. Additionally, more research has emerged that highlights the theoretically driven investigations about the nature of memorable messages. Homelessness is growing internationally, and resources to guide occupational therapy practice in this area are needed. To identify competencies needed for occupational therapists to support individuals during and following homelessness. We conducted a three-round Delphi study with occupational therapy practitioners and researchers with expertise in homelessness. Of 35 potential participants, n = 16 participated in Round I, n = 20 participated in Round II, and n = 18 participated in Round III. Participants included occupational therapists and researchers in Canada, United States, Brazil, UK, Ireland and New Zealand. Consensus was achieved on a total of 93 competencies in 10 categories after 15 were eliminated in Rounds II and III. The categories with the greatest number of competencies included occupational knowledge (n = 18), followed by psychosocial competencies (n = 16). This study represents the first to identify the competencies needed for occupational therapists working in the area of homelessness. Practitioners and educators are encouraged to view the identified competencies as a guide for the professional development of occupational therapists in this context. Stakeholders consulted for this study were able to communicate in English and situated in middle to high-income countries. Occupational therapists support individuals experiencing homelessness in traditional roles, and occupational therapy positions focussed specifically on homelessness appear to be growing. To develop and refine a framework to guide occupational therapy practice and research in homelessness. We developed a framework and refined it through a stakeholder consultation process conducted with 17 international occupational therapy experts using an online survey. In this survey, we presented an initial framework and requested qualitative feedback. We analyzed this qualitative data using content analysis. Stakeholder feedback was categorized into eight recommendations: (1) Revision to the 'four processes'; (2) Emphasizing social justice and systems-level advocacy; (3) Reflecting intersectionality; (4) Emphasizing meaningful activity; (5) Emphasizing peer support; (6) Incorporating a focus on independent living skills; (7) Increasing a focus on an activity for addressing substance misuse; and (8) Acknowledging cognitive and physical health. Each of these recommendations was incorporated into a refined version of this framework. These recommendations and a refined version of the framework are presented in this paper. We have developed and refined a framework aimed at guiding practice and research in occupational therapy in homelessness that will be evaluated in future research. Though a range of frameworks exists for guiding the practice of occupational therapists more generally, this framework represents the first that is focussed specifically on guiding occupational therapy practice and research with individuals who experience homelessness. Routinely, fish encounter stressors and conditions that require the use of anaerobic exercise, including escaping predators, capturing prey, and interacting with fisheries. Although anaerobic metabolism rapidly yields energy to support locomotion, it also accelerates the depletion of energy stores, and accumulates potentially damaging metabolites, relative to aerobic metabolism. During recovery from intense exercise, animals are vulnerable and may forgo opportunities (e.g., foraging, mating). Recovery is thus likely under strong selection pressure. Despite the fact that recovery is essential for life, relatively little attention has been given to its importance for fitness and survival. Here, the ecology and physiology of recovery following intense exercise are reviewed using Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) as a model, though findings are relevant to a wide range of species given that the need for recovery is ubiquitous. Specifically, when and why salmon use anaerobic exercise across their lifecycle, the physiological consequences of this extreme exercise, and the recovery process are considered. The importance of considering recovery for effective management and conservation of Pacific salmon species is discussed, and examples to highlight meaningful ways in which knowledge of recovery can be applied to problems facing fish are provided, with implications widely applicable to all fishes. Given current and projected climate scenarios, understanding the role of temperature in recovery will become progressively more important, and should be an explicit consideration when assessing vulnerability. Abstract Building from a panel at the 2022 National Communication Association (NCA) annual convention, the present article seeks to ground communication studies/sciences as central to interdisciplinary conversations surrounding sexuality education and communication. Communication is integral to sexuality education, and topics of communication, sex, and sexuality education are researched across disciplines. Still, research on sexuality education within communication studies remains under-attended, and interdisciplinary sexuality education research remains siloed by academic discipline. Presenting a forum featuring both emerging and leading scholars in the field of communication researching sex(uality) education, the present article seeks to establish the academic discipline of communication as integral to research on sexuality education. To do so, we first discuss communication as an academic discipline and its advancements in sexuality education research. Next, communication scholars offer their expertise in sex(uality education) communication topics including family conversations, cultural influence, health inequities in education, and medicine. Collectively, these perspectives offer an understanding of current sexual health research in the field of communication, as well as next steps through direct application to conversations about sex, improvement to our medical and education systems, and community-based education and intervention. Abstract Purpose Methods Results Discussion The aim of this review was to synthesise qualitative literature on physical activity experiences of community-dwelling older adults with physical disabilities.We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed, qualitative studies on physical activity with community-dwelling older adults with physical disabilities. We analysed eligible studies identified through electronic database searches (CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus) and manual searches undertaken up to June 2023.Twenty-eight articles with 306 participants were included. As regard the experience of physical activity, although physical activity could elicit pleasure and enjoyment, many reported that physical activity sometimes produced pain. Various outcomes of physical activity were reported, with several physical, psychological, social, and lifestyle benefits prominent. Analyses of barriers and facilitators demonstrated how intrapersonal, interpersonal, environmental, and systems and programme factors influenced physical activity participation among older adults with physical disabilities.Our findings contribute to literature on physical activity in older adults with physical disabilities by synthesising qualitative research on physical activity experiences, outcomes, barriers, and facilitators in this population. Findings demonstrate the need for knowledgeable and supportive healthcare and exercise professionals, environments that support physical activity, and activities that promote pleasure and social connections. Sleep disorders are prevalent in children with Down Syndrome (DS). However, sleep treatment is not always readily accessed by this group. This study aims to understand families' experiences of having a child with DS and sleep difficulties, and in particular, their healthcare experiences, with the goal of informing practice improvements. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 34 parents (fathers n = 4 and mothers n = 30) with open-ended questions about parents' experiences of sleep, family dynamics, and healthcare. We operationalized a reflexive Thematic Analysis. Parents normalized their experiences of having a child with DS and sleep problems. Parents acknowledged that sleep disruption has adverse and pervasive impacts on their wellbeing and family dynamics, but also found this difficult to identify as a health problem. They accepted sleep difficulties as a regular part of bringing up any child, particularly one with a disability. When they did seek treatment for their child's sleep difficulties, parents often reported encountering insensitive and inadequate care and described that, at times, healthcare professionals also normalized children's sleep difficulties, resulting in sub-optimal treatment. This included at times failure to refer to tertiary sleep medicine services when required. Parents' and healthcare professionals' normalization of sleeping difficulties denies that they are both deleterious and modifiable. Practice implications include raising healthcare professionals' awareness of the importance of proactively addressing sleep, with sensitivity to families' normalization strategies, recognizing that families may require prompting to report concerns. Historically, written and oral assessments such as essays and group presentations have been the predominant modes of assessment used to assess pre-service physical education students' and sport coaching students' teaching and coaching knowledge the pedagogical content knowledge of preservice physical education students and sport coaching students. Yet, at a time when the call for more practice-based teacher education is commanding more and more attention in the literature, key consideration should be given to the authenticity of assessment modes being used. Thus, one particular mode of assessment that could be considered is use of Practically Assessed Structured Scenarios (PASS). This article presents a four-way conversation conducted by university educators from four different countries who discuss the benefits and challenges of using PASS as a mode of assessment within physical education teacher education (PETE) and sport coaching education programs. Alcohol control strategies vary between countries and reflect differences in drinking cultures. This study explored how perceived effectiveness of alcohol control strategies varies according to individual characteristics and country of residence. A cross-sectional online survey was completed by 1910 university students in Denmark, England, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Switzerland. It assessed the perceived effectiveness of 11 alcohol control strategies. Correlates included sensation-seeking, alcohol outcome expectancies, drink refusal self-efficacy, and Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) scores. Bivariate analysis using mixed-measures MANOVA and Pearson correlations were followed by linear regression to identify multivariate correlates. These analyses revealed that educational strategies (e.g. teaching people skills to resist peer pressure) were considered more effective than restrictive strategies (e.g. raising the legal drinking age). Perceived effectiveness was greater among women and lighter drinkers. Country of residence also explained unique variance. The findings highlight the need to consider the potential impact of drinking culture in alcohol-related harm-reduction strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The sequelae of concussion are of growing concern within Rugby. World Rugby has introduced rule changes to improve player welfare and reduce head injury frequency. We aimed to report the incidence of head injuries and head injury assessment (HIA) at the 2019 Rugby World Cup (RWC). We reviewed all 45 tournament matches and recorded the number of head injuries, the injured player's position, and the mechanism of injury; whether the player had an HIA; and if they returned to play following injury. We compared these findings with previous RWCs. We recorded 68 head injuries (1.33/game). Thirty-six players (52.9%) were removed from the field of play for an HIA. Of these, 23 (63.9%) failed and therefore considered to have concussion. The head injury rate in 2019 was 37.8 per 1000 player hours, which increased from previous tournaments (22.0 in 2015, 14.6 in 2011, and 4.7 in 2007). The concussion rate was 23 per 1000 player hours in 2019, which was lower than 29 in 2015. In 2019, 63.9% of HIAs were failed compared to 48.7% in 2015. We identified 17 cases where medical staff did not attend to a player suffering a head injury on-field. Of these, four players underwent an HIA after the match doctor reviewed the incident. We recorded a higher rate of head injuries, and a player was more likely to fail their HIA than in previous tournaments. These findings may represent a greater awareness from medical staff and the benefits of education. Reporting a measurement procedure and its analytical performance following method evaluation in a peer-reviewed journal is an important means for clinical laboratory practitioners to share their findings. It also represents an important source of evidence base to help others make informed decisions about their practice. At present, there are significant variations in the information reported in laboratory medicine journal publications describing the analytical performance of measurement procedures. These variations also challenge authors, readers, reviewers, and editors in deciding the quality of a submitted manuscript. The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine Working Group on Method Evaluation Protocols (IFCC WG-MEP) developed a checklist and recommends its adoption to enable a consistent approach to reporting method evaluation and analytical performance characteristics of measurement procedures in laboratory medicine journals. It is envisioned that the LEAP checklist will improve the standardisation of journal publications describing method evaluation and analytical performance characteristics, improving the quality of the evidence base that is relied upon by practitioners. What can we learn from the prodigious expansion of the non-government protected areas that now comprise 12% of terrestrial Australia? An increasingly professional, formal, and diverse non-government sector has developed since 1990, comprising private individuals, non-government organizations, and First Nations and having close ties to governments. We investigate the drivers, dynamics, and diversity of this sector through thematic analysis of 24 key informant interviews and associated gray literature. Changing environmental movements, science-led conservation, partial recognition of First Nations land rights, international agreements, and neoliberal reforms combined to formalize the sector during the 1990s. A bipartisan policy framework for incorporating non-government lands in the national conservation estate, diverse partnerships, transnational networks, and innovation in public and private funding helped grow the sector. The confluence of interests that has transformed the politics and practice of nature conservation in Australia is likely to inform those engaged with similar changes elsewhere. The idea to be explored in this contribution is that to understand change as society evolves is useless without Learning that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing and may look 'smart' but is likely to be unwise. This in turn requires an understanding of why the label 'knowledge economy' came into substantial usage by opinion-formers at about the same time. Thus a first wave of injunctions in favour of 'Learning' by governments and corporate leaders occurred about 30 years ago. The change in question was led by information technology and the production and consumption practices it entailed. In a second wave of 'Learning from Leaders', especially how to be 'Smart', the lesson quickly became 'Learning from Losers'. Here some of the most-vaunted - for example – 'smart' visions for various functions nevertheless failed to deliver. Perhaps the greatest failure to learn has been the sight and sound of 'Flailing by Failing' from Science Policy 'led' governments in response to the SARS2-Covid-19 pandemic when the lessons of at least moderate success involved 'Learning from Life' after being prepared by previous experience. In this article, we detail a project that seeks to expand the ways in which the concepts of gesture and spectromorphology can be understood and applied in audiovisual projects. We argue that understanding spectromorphology in visual domains requires consideration of the wavelengths of light that give us an image. In this project, the complex interaction between clouds and solar radiation becomes the medium for understanding this concept of visual spectra. Invalid Data W.E.S.T. is a collaboration between media artist Grayson Cooke, audio engineer Ian Stevenson, and the experimental improvising group Wilcox, Encarnacao, Swanton Trio (W.E.S.T.), comprising three Australian composer-performers: Felicity Wilcox (piano), John Encarnacao (guitar), and Lloyd Swanton (bass). In this project, a multi-camera recording of W.E.S.T. in studio performance is combined with Cooke's exploration of creative uses of satellite data. Satellite images of clouds rendered using infrared light are intercut with in-depth, multi-camera footage of W.E.S.T. captured during improvisation. The resulting audiovisual meditation draws parallels between spontaneous artistic processes, collaborative creation, and environmental phenomena. In this article, we explore how concepts of gesture and spectromorphology shaped the conception, production and post-production phases of the project, and how these concepts can be used to enhance the production of audiovisual work. This contribution develops previous work analysing forms of misconduct by knowledge-intensive professional business services (P-KIBS) firms, globally located and client-interactive on all five continents. Here we focus on accountancy partnerships, having previously investigated management consultancies. In the former, the infractions range from condoning systematic cheating at accountancy examinations, to unchecked client accountancy estimates signed-off as satisfactory, to covering up inflated budgetary estimates, to advising clients on fraudulent practice, to advising on tax evasion, to acting complicitly in corrupt government practices, including engaging in ‘state capture’ by channelling internal state revenue into private holding bank accounts. Because the litany of misconduct is too enormous for encompassing in a single contribution and in the spirit of this task, the spotlight is only on a few cases that represent typical ‘creative economy’ companies contracted to ‘Big 4’ accountancy P-KIBS in relation to sustainability and social equity issues. For interpretation of data discovery, we utilize evolutionary ‘pattern recognition’ methodology set within a ‘Thirdspace-assemblage’ theoretical framework. As a test, we sketch the ‘sustainability’ complexities of the Pacific Gas & Electricity (PG&E) and Deloitte/Lloyds Register relationship. Through this case study, two leading international museums have shared how they are adopting a structured, leading-practice approach to embed climate action and sustainability into organisational strategy and planning, set meaningful objectives and actively engage the community through programming and curation. While it is too early to gauge the full impact of their current action plans, the strategic and holistic way in which they are integrating sustainability -- and the SDG targets -- into ways of working marks a shift in museum practice. No two institutions are exactly alike and each must chart its own sustainability leadership path, but among the signature elements underpinning the approach these museums have taken are the following: - Mapping at the outset the organisation's role and contribution within the 2030 Agenda, Paris Agreement and other pressing societal challenges; - Proactive early involvement of stakeholders in the design and strategic intent of the plan via the creation of steering committees, rollout of employee surveys and community consultation; - Identification of material topics and setting of strategic objectives across priority impact areas; - Development and endorsement of Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timebound (SMART) organisational targets, with roles and responsibilities; - Measuring and reporting publicly on progress and performance to hold the museum accountable and contribute to the conversation. The five steps of the Universal Strategy Cycle (see Fig. 1.) are a journey any museum can take at any stage of sustainability leadership maturity to realise its 'full transformative potential' for sustainable development and become an ally in 'facing the common threat of climate change', as advocated by ICOM (2022, n. page). As these museums continue to make progress on their plans and 'get their house in order, emphasis is likely to shift from mitigation and management of operational impacts towards greater engagement and partnership to spur the deeper cultural changes that humanity - and the planet -- so urgently needs. One key takeway from the experience of the AM and Powerhouse is that it is essential to start measuring impacts and set plans to minimise these. There is much to learn from other industries and institutions, and there are many solutions at hand to reduce negative impacts and enhance positive influence. Pulling together a cohesive approach lifts standards of operating and supports the organisation through these changes. As climate-related emergencies increase in scale and size, cultural institutions will probably be among the first to be defunded so they have to play a more active role in helping the public, talking about the crisis and flagging solutions. Museums are well-placed to teach on adaptation and resilience and whatever their niche area, they can weigh in on what building for the future looks like. Our sincere call to action is to be courageous, take risks, be vulnerable and know there will be criticism. Connect with others and don't try to do it on your own. To unleash the transformative power of culture, museums must play a part in reimagining a better version of the world, together. Teams composed of human and machine members operating in complex task environments must effectively interact in response to information flow while adapting to environmental changes. This study investigates how interpersonal coordination dynamics between team members are associated with team performance and shared situation awareness in a simulated urban search and rescue (USAR) task. More specifically, this study investigates (1) how communication recurrence affected and reflected coordination dynamics between a USAR robot and human operator when they used different communication strategies, and (2) how these dynamic characteristics of the human–robot interpersonal coordination were associated with the team performance and shared situation awareness. The USAR interpersonal coordination dynamics were systematically characterized using discrete recurrence quantification analysis. Results from this study indicate that (1) teams demonstrating more flexibility in their coordination dynamics were more adaptive to changes in the task environment, and (2) while robot explanations help to improve shared situation awareness, revisiting the same communication pattern (i.e., routine coordination) was associated with better team performance, but did not improve shared situation awareness.
