How should teachers of international relations in settler-colonial states engage with First Nations' sovereignty claims? While a growing body of recent scholarship explores how teaching might acknowledge and move beyond the discipline's racist and colonial origins, less research investigates how pedagogy might rectify inattention to Indigenous sovereignty. This paper reports on a class activity that sought to highlight how the discipline's foundational assumptions can naturalize Indigenous dispossession. In the class, students were asked to conduct discourse analysis of debates surrounding the "Uluru Statement from the Heart," and to consider practices of Indigenous transnationalism. Although students generally succeeded in identifying how discursive practices consolidate the authority of the settler-colonial state, class discussion tended to reproduce the state's justificatory narratives and to classify First Nations' claims as akin to those of any other ethnic minority. At a time when many universities are seeking to embed more Indigenous content within curriculum, we reflect on how the activity revealed epistemic colonialism's operation within educational settings. We argue that in addition to introducing Indigenous perspectives and knowledges, it is valuable for teaching in settler-colonial states to focus critical attention onto non-Indigenous practices that reproduce systemic injustice. In this paper we present research into narratives on immigrants and immigration, to identify cases of hate speech on the part of political parties against immigrants on Twitter during the 2019 and 2021 electoral campaigns in the Community of Madrid. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, the results confirm the exponential increase by all parties in discussion on the issue of immigration and that the political agenda and public discourse is increasingly framed by hate speech towards unaccompanied minors and undocumented migrants. Mitigation is a pragmatic-linguistic category traditionally related to the theory of verbal politeness. Previous work on this issue has shown that conversational hedging is largely conditioned by the speaker's identity (Albelda 2012 Cestero 2011 Samper 2017), that is why a deeper understanding of attenuating phenomena requires close attention to the social context underpinning communicative interactions. This paper advances some preliminary results from the ongoing research on discursive mitigation in the Malaga-PRESEEA spoken corpus. The analysis is centered on the underlying mitigating functions in the speech performance of a group of speakers with university education. Since one of our main objectives is contrastive, and previous solid research on attenuation has been carried out within the PRESEEA context, its methodological basis has been assumed (Albelda 2012 Cestero 2011 Samper 2017). Results of multifactorial logistic regression analysis from our data are partially similar to those obtained in previous studies: mitigation formulas are frequent among the well-educated speakers we have studied, especially those related to self-protection functions. Women—more than men—, and younger speakers—more than every other age-group—, tend to lead this use. La atenuación es una categoría pragmático-lingüística tradicionalmente relacionada con la teoría de la cortesía verbal. Trabajos anteriores demostraron que está condicionada, en gran medida, por los atributos sociales y personales de los hablantes, por lo que para entenderla plenamente es necesario atender a los factores sociales que la determinan (Albelda 2012 Cestero 2011 Samper 2017). Esta investigación presenta los resultados parciales del estudio de la atenuación discursiva en el corpus lingüístico PRESEEA-Málaga. Se analizan las funciones mitigadoras del discurso en un grupo de hablantes pertenecientes al nivel de instrucción alto. Contamos con investigaciones previas sobre la atenuación realizadas en el seno de PRESEEA-España, así que, para establecer comparaciones, asumimos los fundamentos metodológicos comunes a esos trabajos (Albelda 2012 Cestero 2011 Samper 2017). El análisis de regresión logística multifactorial que hemos realizado permite afirmar que nuestros resultados coinciden en parte con los presentados en estudios anteriores: las fórmulas de atenuación son frecuentes entre los informantes de nivel de instrucción alto que han sido estudiados en este trabajo. De las funciones analizadas, aquellas relacionadas con la autoprotección son las más frecuentes. Desde principios de los años 2000, un equipo de personas del Departamento de Sociología de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona ha venido desarrollando el análisis reticular del discurso (ARD) como una aproximación particular de análisis de datos textuales que usa herramientas del análisis de redes sociales. El ARD se ha concretado en diferentes propuestas metodológicas de análisis cualitativo y recientemente en algunas de carácter mixto cualitativo-cuantitativo. Como continuación de estos trabajos, el artículo propone un nuevo método de análisis del texto narrativo de las entrevistas cualitativas que supone una aplicación nueva del ARD en una versión mixta que combina técnicas de análisis cualitativas y cuantitativas. En una primera fase de análisis cualitativo, se interpretan los vínculos conceptuales que el entrevistado hace en su narración y se transforman en grandes redes semánticas de las temáticas centro de estudio. En la segunda fase de análisis, las redes se examinan e interpretan combinando su análisis con los indicadores cuantitativos faction y cliques propios del análisis de redes sociales con los criterios analítico-interpretativos de la persona investigadora. El método implica un análisis de la estructura formal del texto, entendido como una unidad estructurada de significados, que permite captar su significado de una forma completa y rigurosa. La propuesta se ilustra aplicándola al análisis de una entrevista narrativa biográfica.

Este artículo presenta un análisis de los discursos producidos por Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007) y Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (2007-2015) cada 2 de abril durante sus mandatos presidenciales de Argentina, en ocasión del Día de los Caídos y Veteranos de la Guerra de Malvinas (1982). Adoptando el análisis del discurso como práctica interpretativa (Arnoux “Análisis del discurso como campo académico,” Análisis del discurso. Modos de abordar materiales de archivo), se estudian distintos aspectos de la materialidad lingüística que exponen distancias interpretativas sobre la guerra. Específicamente, el análisis se organiza en cuatro ejes: la configuración del adversario, el tipo de emociones desplegadas, la consideración de la guerra como causa nacional o causa dictatorial y la representación de los combatientes. Comparar los discursos de ambxs líderes a partir de estas dimensiones permitirá comprender cómo la memoria de Malvinas se configura discursivamente desde posiciones políticas e ideológicas no exentas de tensiones. This paper aims to analyze the commemorative speeches produced by former Argentine presidents Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007) and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (2007-2015) each April 2nd, the Day of the Fallens and Veterans of the Malvinas War (1982). By adopting Discourse Analysis as an interpretative practice (Arnoux, “Análisis del discurso como campo académico,” Análisis del discurso. Modos de abordar materiales de archivo), we study different aspects of the linguistic materiality that uncover interpretative gaps about the War. We especially focus on five axes: the configuration of the adversary, the kind of emotions, the understanding of war as a national or a dictatorial cause, and the representation of combatants. Comparing the discourses of both leaders by taking these axes into account allows us to understand how the memory about Malvinas is discursively configured from a political and ideological position, not without tension.

This paper analises the discursive reconstruction of the Basque armed conflict in the oral narratives of the first post-conflict generation among Oñati's inhabitants, in order to observe how collective memory is being built and transmitted to the younger generations after the end of ETA's attacks. Using a discursive-historical approach and based on both in-depth and collective interviews, it focuses on three main aspects: how these adolescents categorise and evaluate events and actors of the violent past, the level of identification towards the events narrated, and the main canals through which both knowledge and attitudes are being transmitted. It concludes that adolescents perceive the conflict rather in its immaterial forms such as feelings and prejudices, and that they rely mostly on educational and familiar discourses when rebuilding the past. Some of the main voids identified are also signalised in this paper. Este artículo estudia la reconstrucción discursiva del conflicto armado vasco en la narrativa oral de la primera generación posconflicto de Oñati, con el objeto de observar cómo se está construyendo y transmitiendo a las generaciones jóvenes la memoria colectiva después del fin de los ataques de ETA. Utilizando un enfoque discursivo-histórico y con base en entrevistas en profundidad y colectivas, el artículo se centra en tres aspectos principales: cómo los adolescentes categorizan y evalúan hechos y actores del pasado violento, el nivel de identificación con los hechos narrados y los canales principales a través de los cuales se transmiten el conocimiento y las actitudes. La conclusión es que los adolescentes perciben el conflicto más en sus formas inmateriales, como sentimientos y prejuicios, y que se apoyan sobre todo en discursos educativos y familiares a la hora de reconstruir el pasado. This paper is situated in an emerging body on Brazilian development cooperation, looking at the specific case of cooperation concerning agricultural development in Africa. The analysis highlights the discursive side of Brazilian cooperation, where competing narratives about models and purposes construct different versions of reality for reasons related to the political character of cooperation. Discourse is hence an expression of the political. This paper frames Brazil's agricultural cooperation as a domain of priests, technicians and traders, driven, respectively, by doctrinal, technical fixing and business rationales. This provides an initial frame of reference to distil actors' narratives about Brazilian cooperation programmes. The paper focuses on two cooperation programmes in Mozambique: ProSAVANA and More Food International. The key for understanding competing narratives on these programmes and how they intermingle and change over time can be found in Brazil's domestic sphere. The two programmes have been interpreted as an expression of contradictions in Brazil's agriculture and particularly its dualistic character, typically framed as family farming versus agribusiness. Through the lenses of discourse analysis, this paper offers a critical reading of the interplay between priests, technicians and traders, as shaped by different interests and points of view in cooperation relations. Las cifras de maltrato a la niñez son alarmantes y aumentan cada día. Según el Sistema de Denuncias de la Junta Cantonal de Protección de Derechos de Guayaquil, del total de denuncias recibidas por vulneración de derechos, la mayoría refieren a maltrato a la niñez; de estos casos, 9 de cada 10, provienen de papá, mamá y/o familiares cercanos. Esta realidad plantea al Estado, a la sociedad y a la familia, desafíos e interrogantes difíciles de responder, y que ameritan la revisión de conceptos, normativas y abordajes en que se soportan las diversas políticas públicas. En este contexto, el presente trabajo se propone comprender las representaciones sociales de los actores que son responsables directos del cuidado. Se analiza el discurso que estos tienen frente al maltrato, prestando especial atención a la influencia que tiene la información transmitida por medio de campañas educomunicacionales impulsadas en los últimos años por el Gobierno local de Guayaquil.

Los mensajes de Navidad del rey Juan Carlos I constituyen una de las pocas ocasiones en las que el jefe del Estado español se dirige a los españoles a través de la televisión. El objetivo principal de este artículo es analizar estos textos emitidos por el monarca en el período de su reinado (1975-2013). Estamos ante unos mensajes que los pronuncia el representante de la institución de la Corona, pero que no tienen el correspondiente refrendo legal. Son costumbres y tradiciones aceptadas por todos. El estudio se lleva a cabo desde la perspectiva del análisis del discurso y desde la semiótica de la comunicación, para poner de relieve cómo el texto es utilizado con fines ideológicos para consolidar la imagen de la Monarquía, a la vez que la estructura del Estado. Las figuras del ethos y de la auctoritas reales se ponen de relieve cuando se quiere afianzar la imagen del monarca y de la institución que encarna. Los mensajes siguen el modelo de la oratoria clásica y se utilizan como medio para comentar, persuadir y arbitrar un marco de convivencia en España en la que el rey juega un papel de moderador entre el Estado y la ciudadanía. King Juan Carlos I's Christmas Messages are one of the few occasions when the head of the Spanish State addresses Spanish people on television. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the texts issued by the King during the period of his reign (1975-2013). They are speeches delivered by the representative of the Crown but they do not have any legal endorsement and, as a consequence, they belong to the realm of customs and traditions. The research was carried out from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis and the Semiotics of Communication, in order to highlight how the texts are used with the ideological purpose of strengthening the face of the monarchy as well as that of the State structure. In this respect, the ethos and royal autorictas figures are emphasized when the intention is to enhance the monarch's image and that of the institution he embodies. The messages comply with the rules of classical oratory and are used as a means to discuss, persuade and arbitrate a framework of coexistence in Spain in which the King plays a role of liaison between the state and the citizens. Populism has become a defining feature of European and world politics. During the last decade, major drastic changes in the political landscape have occurred, with France appearing as a singular example: none of the two candidates who made it to the second round of the presidential elections were from the traditionally dominant center-left and center-right parties. This paper analyzes the presence of populism in the political narratives by the main political contenders in the French presidential elections held in 2017. It does so through a discourse analysis of some of their most widely seen political speeches around the campaign, providing an overview of the different framing techniques used by each candidate and their degree and type of populism. En este artículo se presentan los resultados del análisis discursivo realizado sobre las producciones verbales elaboradas por Directivos de Responsabilidad Social (DIRSE) para explicar qué son y cómo se organizan sus políticas socialmente responsables. Concretamente, se disecciona el modo en que la élite empresarial española construye las coordenadas narrativas de su relato sobre la responsabilidad social corporativa o empresarial, haciendo especial hincapié en el conjunto de significaciones y maniobras discursivas que las configuran. Para ello, se ha dividido el documento en cuatro epígrafes. En el primero se introduce al lector en la perspectiva adoptada en esta investigación. En el segundo epígrafe se exponen las principales cuestiones de orden metodológico y en el tercero se presentan los resultados. Finalmente, el documento se cierra con una síntesis las conclusiones alcanzadas. In this paper we present the results of the discourse analysis of verbal productions made by Managers of Social Responsibility (dirse by its Spanish acronym) to explain what they are and how their socially responsible policies are organized. More specifically, we examine the way that Spanish business elite builds the narrative coordinates of its discourse about corporate social responsibility, with particular emphasis on the set of meanings and discourse manoeuvres that shapes them. In order to do so, we have divided this paper into four sections. In the first one, the reader is introduced to the approach taken for this research. In the second section we reflect the main methodological issues, while the last two sections present respectively the results and conclusions of our analysis.

In this paper we present and discuss the construction and articulation of these discourses during the coverage of Rio + 20, a conference that had as its main theme the Green Economy. The brazilian magazines Veja, Isto É, Época and Carta Capital are analyzed. We use Journalism Theories, under the theoretical-methodological perspective of Discourse Analysis, to understand how the selections presented in each journal determine that the reports have a certain focus and, with this, we identify the "discursive framework" of each publication. However, to address the growing debate globally, since the IV Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the discourse that predominates in the articles analyzed is that of the green economy and is then considered as the basis of the hegemonic discursive formation. This paper tries to open a debate about teaching knowledge avai­lable today in the university, showing a plurality of learning practices developed in it, some of which have become, whereas others proposals are ignored or hidden. To account for the analysis about teaching university, our methodology take it some experts have described like traditions of teacher education: the academic tra­dition, the technological tradition, the practice tradition, the personalist-humanist tradition, the critic/poscritic tradition. From these, we use two hermeneutics propo­sals: the paradigms of teacher education from Kenneth Zeichner, the hermeneutical strategies used by Nancy Fraser to discuss social policies. At the end, this paper defended the need to thinking about our practices as teachers, so that the analysis of discourse on the university teaching, our identification with them or not, and the subsequent debate, may emerging processes of professional development and teaching innovation.
