Purpose: We examined the associations of soy product intake with all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortality and mediations through CVD risk factors based on the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study (GBCS), and conducted updated meta-analyses. Methods: A total of 29,825 participants aged 50 + years were included. Causes of death were identified through record linkage. Soy product intake was assessed by food frequency questionnaire. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to analyze the associations between soy product intake and mortality, yielding hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Mediation analyses with CVD risk factors as mediators, and updated meta-analyses were conducted. Results: During 454,689 person-years of follow-up, 6899 deaths occurred, including 2694 CVD and 2236 cancer. Participants who consumed soy product of 1–6 portions/week, versus no consumption, had significantly lower risks of all-cause and CVD mortality (adjusted HR (95% CI) 0.91 (0.86, 0.97) and 0.87 (0.79, 0.96), respectively). In participants who consumed soy product of ≥ 7 portions/week, the association of higher intake with lower CVD mortality was modestly mediated by total cholesterol (4.2%, 95% CI 1.0–16.6%). Updated meta-analyses showed that the highest level of soy product intake, versus the lowest, was associated with lower risks of all-cause and CVD mortality (pooled HR (95% CI) 0.92 (0.88, 0.96) and 0.92 (0.87, 0.98), respectively). Conclusion: Moderate and high soy product intake were associated with lower risks of all-cause and CVD mortality. Our findings provide support for current dietary guidelines recommending moderate soy product intake, and contribute additional evidence regarding the potential protective effects of high soy product intake. Purpose: The associations between dietary patterns and liver cancer risk have received much attention, but evidence among the Chinese population is scarce. This study aims to update the results of two cohort studies and provide the sex-specific associations in the Chinese population. Methods: This study was based on two cohorts from the Shanghai Men's Health Study (SMHS) and the Shanghai Women's Health Study (SWHS). Diet information was collected by validated food frequency questionnaires. Dietary patterns were derived by factor analysis. Cox regression model was utilized to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for associations between dietary patterns and liver cancer risk. Results: During median follow-up years of 11.2 (male) and 17.1 (female) years, 427 males and 252 females were identified as incident primary liver cancer cases. In males, vegetable-based dietary pattern was inversely associated with liver cancer (HRQ4-Q1: 0.67, 95%CI 0.51–0.88, Ptrend < 0.001). Interaction analysis indicated that in males lower vegetable-based dietary pattern score and older age/medical history of chronic hepatitis combined increase the hazard of liver cancer more than the sum of them, with a 114% and 1061% higher risk, respectively. In females, the fruit-based dietary pattern was associated with a reduced risk of liver cancer (HRQ4-Q1: 0.63, 95%CI 0.42–0.95, Ptrend = 0.03). In both males and females, null associations were observed between the meat-based dietary pattern and the risk of liver cancer. Conclusion: A vegetable-based dietary pattern in males and a fruit-based dietary pattern in females tended to have a protective role on liver cancer risk. Background The difference in the prognoses between treatment with surgical therapy and continuation of local-plus-systemic therapy following successful down-staging of intermediate-advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. Methods Data of 405 patients with intermediate-advanced HCC treated at 30 hospitals across China from January 2017 to July 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients received local-plus-systemic therapy and were divided into the surgical (n  = 100) and nonsurgical groups (n  = 305) according to whether they received surgical therapy. The differences between long-term prognoses of the 2 groups were compared. Subgroup analysis was performed in 173 HCC patients who met the criteria for surgical resection following down-staging. Results Multivariable analysis of all patients showed that surgical therapy, hazard ratio (HR): 0.289, 95% confidence interval, CI, 0.136-0.613) was a protective factor for overall survival (OS), but not for event-free survival (EFS). Multivariable analysis of 173 intermediate-advanced HCC patients who met the criteria for surgical resection after conversion therapy showed that surgical therapy (HR: 0.282, 95% CI, 0.121-0.655) was a protective factor for OS, but not for EFS. Similar results were obtained after propensity score matching. For patients with Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage B (HR: 0.171, 95% CI, 0.039-0.751) and C (HR: 0.269, 95% CI, 0.085-0.854), surgical therapy was also a protective factor for OS. Conclusions Overall, for patients with intermediate-advanced HCC who underwent local-plus-systemic therapies, surgical therapy is a protective factor for long-term prognosis and can prolong OS, and for those who met the surgical resection criteria after conversion therapy, surgical therapy is recommended. Background: Depression is a major health condition among the aging population. Previous studies indicated that edentulism was a risk factor for depression. The link between edentulism and depression has not been fully clarified. Objectives: This study aimed to estimate whether chewing difficulties play a mediating role in the association between edentulism and depression among middle‐aged and older populations with national cross‐sectional data. Methods: Data were obtained from the latest fourth wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The outcome variable was set as depression, which was measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES‐D‐10). Independent and mediated variables were separately set as self‐assessed edentulism and chewing difficulties. The nearest neighbour propensity score matching (PSM) method was used to construct a matching group to balance the basic characteristics of individuals with and without edentulism with minimised bias in the estimation. Causal mediation analysis was performed to estimate the degree of contribution of chewing difficulties to the association between edentulism and depression. Several sensitivity analyses were performed to evaluate the robustness of the primary result. Results: A total of 15 853 individuals remained for analysis. After PSM, 809 individuals with edentulism and 2628 without edentulism remained for analysis. Among the matched individuals, the mean age was 66.3 ± 9.2 years, 58.5% were female, 78.8% lived in rural areas, 23.5% had edentulism, 51.1% had depressive symptoms, and 50.1% had chewing difficulties. Logistic regression results showed that a higher incidence of edentulism was associated with a higher rate of depression (OR: 1.39, 95% CI: 1.19–1.63) in the matching group. Causal mediation analysis results indicated that the average mediation effect of chewing difficulties on the association between edentulism and depression was 0.010 (95% CI: 0.005–0.015), and the average direct effect was 0.072 (95% CI: 0.036–0.11). The mediation proportion of chewing difficulties was 11.7% (95% CI: 0.079–0.21). Conclusion: A higher prevalence of edentulism was associated with a higher rate of depression among middle‐aged and elderly populations. Chewing difficulties moderately mediated the association between edentulism and depression. Fundamental oral function should not be neglected to improve mental health among the aging population. Background and Aim: Little is known about whether early menopause in Chinese ethnicity is associated with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We aimed to determine whether self-reported early menopause (either surgical or natural menopause at an age <50 year) was associated with first AMI in Chinese women. Methods: The study population was from the INTERHEART China Study, part of the INTERHEART global study. INTERHEART global study was a standardized case–control study that was designed to evaluate the risk factors for first AMI among 52 countries. Data for demographic factors, education, income, and cardiovascular risk factors were obtained by structured questionnaires. A standard set of questions that inquired about menstrual history was included in the interview. Results: Of the 1,771 Chinese women, 1,563 (88.3%) reported either natural or surgical menopause. In univariate logistic regression model, women with early menopause had higher risk of AMI (odds ratio [OR]: 1.51; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.23–1.87). After controlling for age, birth control measures, type of menopause, and other traditional risk factors (including waist/hip ratio, lifestyle factors, history of hypertension and diabetes, psychosocial factors, and apolipoprotein B [ApoB]/A1 [ApoA1]), the risk for AMI remained (OR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.03–1.79). The population attributable risk for AMI in women with early menopause at <50 years was 10.1% (95% CI: 4.0–20.0) compared with women who had menopause at ≥50 years. Background: Evidence regarding the characteristics and prognosis of neuroblastoma (NBL) in China is limited. We aimed to investigate the characteristics and prognosis of intermediate- or high-risk NBL in children in China. Methods: We included 147 patients with intermediate- or high-risk NBL evaluated from January 2006 to March 2015. The patients were aged 1 month to 15.5 years, 66% of them were boys, and 117 (79.6%) were diagnosed with high-risk NBL. Results: After a median follow-up of 32.5 months, 80 (45.6%) patients survived, with a median survival time of 48 months (95% confidence interval [CI]: 36.41–59.59). High-risk patients (hazard ratio [HR]: 12.467; 95% CI: 11.029–12.951), partial response (PR) (HR: 1.200; 95% CI: 1.475–2.509) or progression disease (PD) (HR: 1.924; 95% CI: 1.623–3.012) after induction chemotherapy, and intracranial metastasis (HR: 3.057; 95% CI: 0.941–4.892) were independent risk factors for survival (p < 0.05) and postrelapse survival (p < 0.05). NBL relapse, male sex, and PR or PD after induction chemotherapy were risk factors for event-free survival (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In addition to previously established independent risk factors, such as age, risk group, and relapse, efficacy of induction chemotherapy and intracranial metastasis play significant roles in the prognosis of NBL. Background: Delirium is one of the most common complications in critically ill children. Once delirium occurs, it will cause physical and psychological distress in children and increase the length of their ICU stay and hospitalization costs. Understanding the risk factors for delirium in critically ill children can help develop targeted nursing interventions to reduce the incidence of delirium. Aims: To investigate the incidence and the risk factors of delirium in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Study design: We performed a prospective observational study in critically ill patients in the PICU between February and July 2020. Delirium was diagnosed by the Cornell Assessment of Paediatric Delirium (CAPD) and the Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale and analysed via univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression to determine the independent risk factors of delirium in critically ill children. Results: The study enrolled 315 patients ranging in age from 1–202 (65.3–54.3) months, with 56.2% (n = 177) being male. The incidence of delirium was 29.2% (n = 92) according to CAPD criteria. Among them, 33 cases (35.9%) were of hyperactive delirium, 16 cases (17.4%) were of hypoactive delirium, and 43 cases (46.7%) were of mixed delirium. By using stepwise logistic regression, the independent risk factors of delirium included mechanical ventilation (odds ratio [OR], 11.470; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.283–30.721), nervous system disease (OR, 5.596; 95%CI, 2.445 to 12.809), developmental delay (OR, 5.157; 95% CI, 1.990–13.363), benzodiazepine (OR, 3.359; 95% CI 1.278–8.832), number of catheters (OR, 1.918; 95% CI, 1.425 to 2.582), and age (OR, 0.985; 95% confidence interval CI, 0.976–0.993). Conclusions: Delirium is a common complication in the PICU. The independent risk factors include mechanical ventilation, nervous system disease, developmental delay, benzodiazepines, higher number of catheters, and younger age. This study may help develop intervention strategies to reduce the incidence of delirium in critically ill children by targeting modifiable risk factors. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Recommendations for practice include paying attention to high‐risk children in the ICU who are prone to delirium, removing influencing factors as soon as possible, and providing targeted nursing interventions. Background The prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients was reported rarely and with small sample. Aim The study sought to explore the prevalence of ED in men with AS and to determine whether AS is a risk factor for ED. Methods A systematic search was conducted in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, VIP Database, CBM, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. The search was restricted to the articles published up to October 2022. Assessment tools adapted for prevalence studies were used to evaluate the quality of cross-sectional studies, and the quality of case-control studies was assessed by Newcastle–Ottawa scale. The relative risk (RR) and the standard mean difference (SMD) were used to evaluate the association between AS and ED. The subgroup analyses were conducted to identify the resources of heterogeneity. The sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the stability of the pooled estimates. Data were analyzed and graphed using STATA 16.0. Outcomes The pooled prevalence of ED in AS patients was calculated and the RR and the SMD were used to evaluate the association between AS and ED. Results A total of 393 AS patients, enrolled in the 8 included studies, were assessed for the prevalence of ED. The pooled ED prevalence estimate was 44% (95% confidence interval [CI], 25% to 63%, P <.001) with the statistical heterogeneity (I2 = 95.1%, P <.001). After pooling the data for RR, the results showed that men with AS were at a significantly higher risk for ED when compared with the general population without AS (RR, 2.04; 95% CI, 1.28 to 3.25, P =.003; heterogeneity: I2 = 72.6%, P =.003). The pooled results of 5 studies, which provided the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score, demonstrated that patients with AS had significantly lower values in the IIEF erectile function domain as compared with the healthy control subjects (SMD, −0.60; 95% CI, −0.80 to −0.41; P <.001; heterogeneity: I2 = 34.4%, P =.192). Additionally, the other domain of the IIEF also showed lower values when compared with the general population without AS (P <.05). Clinical Implications The present meta-analysis provides evidence of the management of ED in men with AS. Strengths and Limitations This is the first meta-analysis to provide the prevalence of ED in AS patients and to demonstrate that AS is a risk factor for ED. However, the results after pooling the included studies showed significant heterogeneity. China is a multi-ethnic country, and the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection may be diverse among ethnics. This meta-analysis was conducted to compare the prevalence of H. pylori infection between Tibetans and Han ethnics. Ten studies that reported the prevalence of H. pylori infection between Tibetans and Hans in China were eligible. The pooled prevalence of H. pylori infection was 62.2% versus 55.3% among Tibetans and Hans, respectively. Tibetans had a higher risk of H. pylori infection than Hans (odds ratio [OR] = 1.38). In subgroup analysis, Tibetans with upper gastrointestinal symptoms (OR = 1.51), inhabiting in Tibet (OR = 1.51), or inhabiting in Northwestern region (OR = 1.15) had significantly higher risks of H. pylori infection. In addition, in the recent 10 years, Hans showed a decreased risk of H. pylori infection (OR = 1.81). Heterogeneity was common, while sensitivity analyses showed partially inconsistent results against main findings. This study demonstrated higher prevalence of H. pylori infection in Tibetans compared with Hans, especially in recent years, or in Tibet and northwest China, as well as symptomatic Tibetans. Objective: Our objective is to validate the effectiveness of the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria in malnutrition diagnosis compared with Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) and assess the impact of malnutrition diagnosed using GLIM criteria on the clinical outcomes of patients with GC.Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 895 patients who underwent radical gastrectomy at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. Nutrition assessment was performed on all patients according to the GLIM criteria and PG-SGA. The κ statistic was used to evaluate the agreement between two methods. Multivariate logistic regression and Cox regression based on single-factor analysis were used to predict postoperative complications and overall survival rates.Results: Based on the GLIM criteria, 38.3% of the patients were diagnosed as malnourished, including 21.7% Stage I (moderate malnutrition) and 16.6% Stage II (severe malnutrition). GLIM criteria had a moderate agreement with PG-SGA (κ = 0.548). Patients in the Stage II malnutrition group had a higher incidence of complications, a longer postoperative length of stay, and higher hospitalization costs. Logistic regression showed that Stage II malnutrition was an independent risk predictor of postoperative complications (odds ratio, 3.28; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.18-4.94). Furthermore, Cox regression analysis showed that both Stage I (hazard ratio [HR], 1.52; 95% CI, 1.11-2.07; P = .009) and Stage II (HR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.34-2.53; P < .001) malnutrition were independent risk predictors of overall survival.Conclusion: Diagnosis of malnutrition according to the GLIM criteria is useful in predicting the adverse postoperative clinical outcomes of patients with gastric cancer. Objective. Our study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram to predict severe hypocalcemia (SH) before total parathyroidectomy (TPTX) without auto-transplantation in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism. Methods. A total of 299 consecutive patients who underwent TPTX without transplantation for secondary hyperparathyroidism were selected from the General Hospital of Northern Theater Command between January 2013 and December 2021. Of these, patients who underwent surgery between January 2013 and December 2020 formed the training cohort (n = 208) to develop a nomogram, and those who underwent surgery thereafter formed the validation cohort (n = 91) to validate the performance of this nomogram. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify the risk factors associated with SH, and then, a nomogram was constructed. Results. The incidence of postoperative SH was 27.9% and 35.2% in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The preoperative factors associated with SH were younger age, lower serum calcium (Ca) level, higher intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) level, and higher serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level. Incorporating these 4 factors, the nomogram achieved good concordance indexes of 0.866 (95%CI, 0.816–0.916) and 0.867 (95% CI, 0.793–0.941) in predicting SH in the training and validation cohorts, respectively, and had well-fitted calibration curves. The positive predictive values of the nomogram were 64.7% (54.1%–78.4%) and 75.0% (58.6%–88.5%), and negative predictive values of the nomogram were 90.0% (82.9%–93.6%) and 86.4% (73.5%–94.0%) for the training and validation cohorts, respectively. Conclusions. We developed and validated a nomogram for the prediction of SH in patients who underwent TPTX without auto-transplantation for secondary hyperparathyroidism. Background. To evaluate the associations between long-term oral Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) and recurrence and metastasis (R&M) in patients with stage II and III colorectal cancer (CRC). Furthermore, we aimed to determine the correlation between different syndrome patterns and prognosis and summarized the regularities among CHMs prescriptions, providing reference for clinical practice. Methods. An ambispective cohort study was conducted. All CRC patients who sought evaluation and treatment at Xiyuan Hospital and Beijing Cancer Hospital from August 2014 to August 2016 were included. In this study, "whether patients voluntarily take CHMs" was taken as the exposure factor, and the exposure degree was "the duration of CHM use." Stratification was performed according to the duration of TCM use to determine the relationship with R&M of CRC. The primary outcome was disease-free survival. Patients who had R&M of CRC after taking CHMs for ≥6 months were defined as "worst patients." R software was used for statistical analysis. The Kaplan–Meier method and Cox regression analysis were used to determine the prognosis. IBM SPSS was used to model a priori association rules; drug use rules were analyzed on this basis. Results. A total of 186 patients with stage II and III CRC after radical resection were enrolled. All patients reached the study endpoint by August 2021. The difference in disease-free survival between the two groups was most significant when the cutoff value for CHMs was 18 months (P = 0.0012). Multivariate analysis showed that 18 CHMs were independent protective factors for R&M of CRC (P = 0.001 , HR = 0.20, 95% CI = 0.08–0.53). The ratio of Pi (spleen) and Shen (kidney) deficiency in the worst cases was higher than patients without R&M (P = 0.018). Sijunzi and Liuwei Dihuang decoctions were the most frequently used prescriptions in the anti-R&M phase. Conclusion. CHMs complying with the "Jianpi Bushen" principle may attenuate the risk of R&M in patients with stage II and III CRC. Pi (spleen) and Shen (kidney) deficiency in patients receiving TCM intervention for the first time within 6 months of radical resection may be associated with a higher CRC R&M rate. Preterm birth is the leading cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity. Some prospective cohort studies suggested that fish and shellfish consumption may affect the incidence of preterm birth. However, conflicting evidence exists on the relationship between fish and shellfish consumption and preterm birth. A total of 10 179 women from Gansu province were interviewed after delivery to collect information on their past intake of fish and shellfish using FFQ. Logistic regression models were used to estimate OR and 95 % CI to examine the association between fish and shellfish consumption and preterm birth and its clinical subtypes. Fish and shellfish consumption was associated with reduced risk of preterm birth (OR = 0·65, 95 % CI 0·56, 0·77). Increasing frequency of fish and shellfish consumption, compared with no fish and shellfish consumption, was associated with decreasing odds of preterm birth. Besides, increasing weekly total amount of fish and shellfish consumption, compared with no fish and shellfish consumption, was also associated with decreasing odds of preterm birth. Significant trend effect was also seen between fish and shellfish consumption and very preterm birth (Pfor trend = 0·001) and spontaneous preterm birth (Pfor trend = 0·003). Interaction was observed between total fish and shellfish consumption with maternal age (Pfor interaction = 0·041) and pre-pregnancy BMI underweight (Pfor interaction = 0·012). Our findings showed that maternal fish and shellfish consumption was associated with lower incidence of preterm birth.We recommend for the national guideline of ≥350 g/week of fish and shellfish consumption among pregnant women. Background: The outbreak of COVID-19 generated severe emotional reactions, and restricted mobility was a crucial measure to reduce the spread of the virus. This study describes the changes in public emotional reactions and mobility patterns in the Chinese population during the COVID-19 outbreak. Methods: We collected data on public emotional reactions in response to the outbreak through Weibo, the Chinese Twitter, between 1st January and 31st March 2020. Using anonymized location-tracking information, we analyzed the daily mobility patterns of approximately 90% of Sichuan residents. Results: There were three distinct phases of the emotional and behavioral reactions to the COVID-19 outbreak. The alarm phase (19th–26th January) was a restriction-free period, characterized by few new daily cases, but a large amount public negative emotions [the number of negative comments per Weibo post increased by 246.9 per day, 95% confidence interval (CI) 122.5–371.3], and a substantial increase in self-limiting mobility (from 45.6% to 54.5%, changing by 1.5% per day, 95% CI 0.7%–2.3%). The epidemic phase (27th January–15th February) exhibited rapidly increasing numbers of new daily cases, decreasing expression of negative emotions (a decrease of 27.3 negative comments per post per day, 95% CI −40.4 to −14.2), and a stabilized level of self-limiting mobility. The relief phase (16th February–31st March) had a steady decline in new daily cases and decreasing levels of negative emotion and self-limiting mobility. Conclusions: During the COVID-19 outbreak in China, the public's emotional reaction was strongest before the actual peak of the outbreak and declined thereafter. Objectives: Limited information is known about preventive dental visits (PDVs) before seven years of age among children in China. This study aimed to examine the early PDV rate, identify the impact of PDV on dental caries and untreated dental caries, and explore the factors related to PDV among Chinese sampled children under seven years old. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in five selected primary health care facilities in Chengdu, China, from May to August 2021. Parent–child dyads during regular systematic medical management were recruited to participate. Children's dental caries were identified through dental examinations and documented as decayed, missing and filled teeth index (dmft) by trained primary care physicians. Dental-related information was collected through a questionnaire. Zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) regression was used to test the effect of early PDV on the dmft value, and logistic regression was used to analyse impact factors on the early PDV. Results: A total of 2028 out of 2377 parent–child dyads were qualified for analysis. Half of the children (50.4%) were male, with a mean age of 4.8 years. Among all the children, 12.1% had their first dental visit for preventive purposes, 34.4% had their first dental visit for symptomatic purposes, and more than half had never visited a dentist. The results showed that a lower dmft value (adjusted OR: 0.69, 95% CI: 0.48–0.84), a higher rate of caries-free (aOR: 6.5, 95% CI: 3.93–10.58), and a lower rate of untreated dental caries (aOR: 0.40, 95% CI: 0.21–0.76) were associated with early PDV utilization. Children who had a higher rate of PDV were positively associated with living in a family with better parental behaviours (aOR: 2.30, 95% CI: 1.71–3.08), better parental oral health perception (aOR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.06–1.32), fathers who had no untreated caries (aOR: 0.68, 95% CI: 0.47–0.97), families with higher socioeconomic status (aOR: 1.09, 95% CI: 1.04–1.16), and dental health advice received from well-child care physicians (aOR: 1.47, 95% CI: 1.08–2.00). Conclusions: Early PDV was associated with a lower rate of dental caries prevalence and untreated dental caries among sampled children younger than seven in Western China. Underutilization and social inequities existed in PDV utilization. Introduction: Vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP) is correlated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) through the biological functions of regulating plasma vitamin D (VD) level and the inflammatory process. Objective: This study aims to investigate the effects of VD level and VDBP gene polymorphisms on the risk of NAFLD in a Chinese population. Methods: Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels were measured and seven VDBP candidate genetic variants (rs222020, rs2282679, rs4588, rs1155563, rs7041, rs16847024, rs3733359) were genotyped among participants in this case-control study. The control group was frequency-matched to the NAFLD case group by age and gender. Correlation analysis and multiple linear regressions were used to screen determinants of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels. Multivariable unconditional logistic regression was performed to estimate odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). The prediction capability of models containing independent factors was estimated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and Hosmer-Lemeshow test. Results: Age, body mass index, and triacylglycerol were independent factors influencing VD levels. Participants with low VD levels had significantly higher prevalence of NAFLD compared to subjects with normal VD levels (p < 0.001). A low VD level contributed to increased the risk of NAFLD, independent of metabolic factors known to affect VD levels (adjusted OR = 2.282, 95% CI = 1.422–3.661, p = 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that individuals carrying rs7041-G allele had a significantly decreased the risk of NAFLD occurrence compared to T allele (additive model: adjusted OR = 0.814, 95% CI = 0.713–0.929, p = 0.002; codominant model: adjusted OR = 0.623, 95% CI = 0.449–0.866, p = 0.005), after adjusting for age, gender, and overweight. Stratification by multiple metabolic disorders did not alter this relationship. Moreover, we developed a simple model including age, gender, metabolic disorders, and VDBP single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) to assess NAFLD risk, an AUC of which being 0.817, significantly higher than the model not included VDBP SNP, with Hosmer-Lemeshow test fitting well (p = 0.182). Conclusions: Low plasma VD levels may increase susceptibility to NAFLD, while rs7041-G allele in VDBP contributed to a decreased NAFLD risk among Chinese population. Aim: To examine whether various aspects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with comorbid cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and diabetes among middle‐aged and old adults in China. Methods: Using the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study survey and the 2014 Life History survey, in total, 17 115 respondents aged ≥45 years were included. Logistic regressions were applied to estimate the relationship between aspects of ACEs and diagnosis of both CVDs and diabetes while adjusting for adulthood demographics, health and health behaviors. Results: Childhood hunger (OR = 1.75, P < 0.01), childhood socioeconomic status (OR = 1.45, P < 0.05) and abuse from father (OR = 1.50, P < 0.05) were significantly associated with greater odds of comorbid CVDs and diabetes above and beyond adulthood characteristics. In addition, the effects of these ACEs on comorbidity were stronger than their effects on the single chronic condition. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that, for middle‐aged and old Chinese adults, ACEs could have long‐lasting impacts on multiple chronic conditions in later life. In this report, we provided an overview of the prevalence, control, and prevention of water-borne arsenicosis in China during 2001–2016. Random sampling was continuously performed during 2001–2010 to find villages having high levels of arsenic (>50 µg/L) in drinking water. The high-arsenic-exposure villages with more geographically dispersed water supplies were subsequently analyzed for characteristics of arsenic distribution, and villages with relatively large populations were investigated for arsenicosis. The results showed that among 32,673,677 inhabitants in 36,820 villages, 1,894,587 inhabitants in 2,476 villages were at risk of high arsenic exposure. Among the 33,318 drinking water sources surveyed in 625 high-arsenic-exposure villages, 9,807 drinking water sources that contained high levels of arsenic (>50 µg/L) were identified. The overall prevalence rate of arsenicosis was 1.93%. Further, some representative villages were chosen to monitor arsenicosis annually, showing that the prevalence rate of arsenicosis was lower in villages with arsenic-safe water supplies than in villages without arsenic-safe water supplies. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the trends and geographic variations of incident diabetes as well as the corresponding sex differences in China. Methods: The open cohort study derived data of 16,610 individuals from the China Health and Nutrition Survey 1997–2015. Direct standardisation was employed to calculate the age‐standardised diabetes incidence. Mixed effects logistic regression models with interaction terms were performed to examine variations in incident diabetes. Socio‐demographic (age, sex, marital status, racial compositions and educational attainment) and lifestyle attributes (smoking history, BMI and waist circumference) were sequentially included as covariates. Results: Overall age‐standardised diabetes incidence increased from 2.94 per 1000 person‐years (95% CI, 2.44–3.44) in 1997–2004 to 5.54 (95% CI, 4.94–6.14) in 2009–2015. Models with interaction terms suggest that the increase among men was higher than that among women (wave 2006–2009 × Female: OR = 0.45, 95% CI 0.28–0.72). Age‐standardised incidence of diabetes varied across regions, ranging from 5.67 (95% CI, 4.95–6.40) in Eastern China to 2.69 (95% CI 2.19–3.19) in Western China. Subsequent modelling analyses suggest that the geographic variations could be mostly explained by the variations in the BMI and waist circumference across regions. Conclusions: Results suggest that the incidence of self‐reported diabetes approximately doubled during the study period. The increase among men was steeper than that among women. To examine how immigrant status and family relationships are associated with advance care planning (ACP) engagement and end-of-life (EOL) preference in burial planning among older Chinese Americans, the largest subgroup of Asian Americans. Cross-sectional survey. Communities in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Participants were 430 older Chinese Americans aged 55 years and older. Measures included ACP contemplation, ACP discussion, and EOL preference in burial planning, immigrant status, family cohesion, family conflict, demographic information, and health status. Results show that in comparison to foreign-born Chinese Americans, US-born Chinese Americans were more likely to have ACP contemplation [odds ratio (OR) 2.80, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.39-5.63], ACP discussion (OR 3.02, 95% CI 1.50-6.08), and preferences for burial plans at the end of life (OR 4.56, 95% CI 2.04-10.18). Family conflict increased the possibility of having ACP contemplation (OR 1.21, 95% CI 1.07-1.38), ACP discussion (OR 1.22, 95% CI 1.07-1.39), and EOL preference in burial planning (OR 1.22, 95% CI 1.04-1.42), whereas family cohesion was not associated with these study outcomes. This study suggests that ACP should be adapted to be more culturally appropriate, especially in a time of coronavirus and xenophobia, such as framing ACP as a tool to help families reduce stress while fulfilling filial obligations, in order to ensure equitable access to ACP. Many people die from cardiovascular diseases each year, and extreme temperatures are regarded as a risk factor for cardiovascular deaths. However, the relationship between temperature and cardiovascular deaths varies in different regions because of population density, demographic inequality, and economic situation, and the evidence in Ganzhou, China is limited and inconclusive. This study aimed to assess extreme temperature-related cardiovascular mortality and identify the potential vulnerable people. After controlling other meteorological measures, air pollution, seasonality, relative humidity, day of the week, and public holidays, we examined temperature-related cardiovascular mortality along 21 lag days by Poisson in Ganzhou, China. A J-shaped relationship was observed between mean temperature and cardiovascular mortality. Extremely low temperatures substantially increased the relative risks (RR) of cardiovascular mortality. The effect of cold temperature was delayed by 2–6 days and persisted for 4–10 days. However, the risk of cardiovascular mortality related to extremely high temperatures was not significant (p > 0.05). Subgroup analysis indicated that extremely low temperatures had a stronger association with cardiovascular mortality in people with cerebrovascular diseases (RR: 1.282, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.020–1.611), males (RR: 1.492, 95% CI: 1.175–1.896), married people (RR: 1.590, 95% CI: 1.224–2.064), and people above the age of 65 years (RR: 1.641, 95% CI: 1.106–2.434) than in people with ischemic heart disease, females, unmarried people, and the elderly (≥65 years old), respectively. The type of cardiovascular disease, sex, age, and marital status modified the effects of extremely low temperatures on the risk of cardiovascular mortality. The accurate identification and prediction of high-cost Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients is important for addressing the economic burden of COPD. The objectives of this study were to use machine learning approaches to identify and predict potential high-cost patients and explore the key variables of the forecasting model, by comparing differences in the predictive performance of different variable sets. Machine learning approaches were used to estimate the medical costs of COPD patients using the Medical Insurance Data of a large city in western China. The prediction models used were logistic regression, random forest (RF), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost). All three models had good predictive performance. The XGBoost model outperformed the others. The areas under the ROC curve for Logistic Regression, RF and XGBoost were 0.787, 0.792 and 0.801. The precision and accuracy metrics indicated that the methods achieved correct and reliable results. Objectives: Parental psychological control is a stressor that may provoke children's aggression. However, whether there are bidirectional associations between parental psychological control and children's physical aggression remains unclear, as does the mechanism underlying these associations. Using an autoregressive cross-lagged model, the present study tested (a) the extent to which parental psychological control predicts physical aggression and vice versa, and (b) whether child impulsivity explains this bidirectional association. Methods: Data were collected across three time points (fall semester of 4th grade, spring semester of 4th grade, and fall semester of 5th grade). A sample of 689 children (385 boys, 304 girls) completed questionnaires regarding parental psychological control, impulsivity and physical aggression. Gender, age and socioeconomic status were controlled in the analyses. Results: As hypothesized, the findings showed that there was a direct longitudinal connection from parental psychological control to child physical aggression, and the inverse relation was also significant. Moreover, the results demonstrated an indirect link from parental psychological control to physical aggression via child impulsivity, but the inverse effect was not significant. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that there is a reciprocal relationship between parental psychological control and children's physical aggression, and that the parent-driven component of this bidirectional process is mediated by child impulsivity. This article aims to estimate the effects of air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and NO2) on the hospitalization expenses of adult patients admitted due to asthma. The data is sourced from the medical health database of a city in Southwest China, which involves approximately 14 million residents. A generalized additive model using a Poisson distribution was utilized to identify the effects of air pollution on the cost of hospitalization due to asthma. Hospital admissions were stratified by sex, age, season, and type of medical insurance to specialize the results. Air pollution significantly affects hospitalization expenses for asthma. These effects were more significant in the male, non-senior subgroups than in the female, senior subgroups. The difference also significantly existed in different insurance type subgroups. Air pollution has adverse effects on hospitalization expenses for asthma. Climate change is now deeply affecting the world in the aspects of economy and health. Based on our research, policymakers can establish more effective air pollution reduction policies and measures that can control the levels of ambient air pollutants, which help save health care resources and improve the welfare of the population by easing the climate change. Background evidence concerning the relationship between sleep quality and cognitive impairment is limited and inconsistent. Objective to examine the association of sleep quality with memory impairment and poor cognitive function in a large sample of older Chinese. Methods 15,246 participants aged 50+ years of the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study who attended the second physical examination from 2008 to 2012 were included. Sleep quality was assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and cognitive performance was assessed using both Delayed Word Recall Test (DWRT) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Memory impairment was defined by DWRT score < 4 and poor cognitive function by MMSE score < 25. Results after adjusting for potential confounders, lower habitual sleep efficiency was associated with a higher risk of memory impairment and poor cognitive function with a dose-response pattern (both P for trend <0.001). The adjusted odds ratio (OR, 95% confidence interval (CI)) for poor cognitive function in those with the sleep efficiency of 75–85%, 65–75% and <65%, versus ≥85%, was 1.31 (1.12–1.53), 1.41 (1.16–1.73) and 1.33 (1.09–1.63), respectively. No association of the global PSQI score with memory impairment or poor cognitive function was found. Background: Due to the drastic surge of COVID-19 patients, many countries are considering or already graduating health professional students early to aid professional resources. We aimed to assess outbreak-related psychological distress and symptoms of acute stress reaction (ASR) in health professional students and to characterize individuals with potential need for interventions. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 1442 health professional students at Sichuan University, China. At baseline (October 2019), participants were assessed for childhood adversity, stressful life events, internet addiction, and family functioning. Using multivariable logistic regression, we examined associations of the above exposures with subsequent psychological distress and ASR in response to the outbreak. Results: Three hundred and eighty-four (26.63%) participants demonstrated clinically significant psychological distress, while 160 (11.10%) met the criterion for a probable ASR. Individuals who scored high on both childhood adversity and stressful life event experiences during the past year were at increased risks of both distress (ORs 2.00–2.66) and probable ASR (ORs 2.23–3.10), respectively. Moreover, internet addiction was associated with elevated risks of distress (OR 2.05, 95% CI 1.60–2.64) and probable ASR (OR 2.15, 95% CI 1.50–3.10). By contrast, good family functioning was associated with decreased risks of distress (OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.33–0.55) and probable ASR (OR 0.48, 95% CI 0.33–0.69). All associations were independent of baseline psychological distress. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that COVID-19 related psychological distress and high symptoms burden of ASR are common among health professional students. Nonmedical use of prescription drug (NMUPD) among adolescents has increased substantially over the last 2 decades, and evidence suggests that sleep duration may impact upon drug use and academic performance. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of sleep duration, NMUPD, and academic performance among Chinese adolescents, to test the independent associations of sleep duration with NMUPD, and to investigate whether these associations vary by academic performance. Data were from the 2015 School-based Chinese Adolescents Health Survey using a multi-stage, stratified-cluster, random-sampling method to collect information from 162,601 high school students [mean age (SD) =15.2 (1.9) years; 47.4% were male] from 42 cities in China. The weighted prevalence of sleeping ≤ 5 h/weekday was 1.1% (95% CI, 1.0–1.1%), and the weighted prevalence of sleeping > 9 h/weekday was 7.6% (95% CI 7.4–7.7%). After adjusting for significant covariates and academic performance, the results showed that compared with those with 7–9 h/weekday sleep duration, students reporting ≤5 h/weekday were more likely to misuse opioids (AOR = 2.12, 95% CI 1.73–2.59), sedatives (AOR = 2.00, 95% CI 1.65–2.42), and any prescription drug use (AOR = 1.89, 95% CI 1.60–2.23); students with>9 h/weekday sleep duration were also at a higher risk of opioids use, sedative use, and any prescription drug misuse; the U-shaped association of sleep duration with NMUPD was found. Moreover, there exist significant associations between weekday sleep duration and NMUPD among Chinese adolescents, and academic performance plays a moderating role in the aforementioned associations. Objective: The rising rate of suicidal behavior among adolescents is a growing concern, and sex differences may induce differential exposure to prescription drug misuse or suicidal behavior. We estimated, among Chinese adolescents, (1) the prevalence of nonmedical use of prescription drugs, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts; (2) whether nonmedical use of prescription drugs was independently associated with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts; and (3) whether there were sex differences in the associations. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of the data drawn from the 2015 National School-based Chinese Adolescents Health Survey. A total of 94,911 students completed questionnaires and qualified for our survey (response rate: 93.7%). All analyses were conducted separately for boys and girls. Results: There were significant sex differences in the prevalence of opioid or sedative misuse, and the sources and reasons for nonmedical use of prescription drugs (p < 0.05). The prevalence of suicidal ideation or suicide attempts was significantly higher in girls than in boys (suicidal ideation: 17.9% among girls vs 14.1% among boys; suicide attempts: 3.5% among girls vs 2.7% among boys). Among girls, frequent use of opioids was associated with an increased risk of suicidal ideation (adjusted odds ratio = 1.84, 95% confidence interval = [1.57, 2.17]) and suicide attempts (adjusted odds ratio = 2.96, 95% confidence interval = [2.34, 3.74]), and frequent use of sedatives was also positively associated with suicidal ideation (adjusted odds ratio = 2.23, 95% confidence interval = [1.91, 2.60]) and suicide attempts (adjusted odds ratio = 4.02, 95% confidence interval = [3.25, 4.99]). These associations were also statistically significant in boys, but the magnitudes of adjusted odds ratios for the associations between frequent use of opioids and sedatives and suicidal behavior were greater in girls than boys. Conclusion: There exist significant sex differences in the prevalence rates of nonmedical use of prescription drugs and suicidal behavior, and the child's sex plays a role in the association between nonmedical use of prescription drugs and suicidal behavior. Purpose: Eggs are highly nutritious but concerns over their cholesterol content have led to dietary avoidance among many. There are also important international differences in relevant dietary guidance. We conducted the first prospective study in China investigating the association of egg consumption, cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, and a meta-analysis. Methods: We included 28,024 participants without CVD at baseline (2003-8) in Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study. All-cause and CVD mortality were identified through record linkage. We used Cox proportional hazards regression. We followed the Meta-analysis Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology reporting guidelines. Results: During 275,343 person-years follow-up (average 9.8 years), we found 2685 all-cause and 873 CVD deaths. We found no significant difference in all-cause mortality between higher (7+ eggs/week) and low consumption (< 1 egg/week) [adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 1.08, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.93–1.24], and mortality from CVD (0.99, 95% CI 0.76–1.27), ischemic heart disease (IHD) (0.92, 95% CI 0.63–1.36), or stroke (0.88, 95% CI 0.57–1.35). The updated meta-analyses including our results showed that 7+ eggs/week was not associated with all-cause mortality (HR 1.09, 95% CI 0.997–1.200) or IHD (HR 0.97, 95% CI 0.90–1.05), but associated with a small reduction in stroke (HR 0.91. 95% CI 0.85–0.98). Conclusions: Eating one egg daily is not associated with increase in CVD or all-cause mortality. The small observed reduction in stroke risk needs to be confirmed. Aims To test, among Chinese adolescents: (1) whether childhood maltreatment is associated with non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) and (2) whether there are interaction effects of childhood maltreatment and depressive symptoms on NMUPD. Design A secondary analysis of the cross-sectional data collected from 7th- and 12th-graders who were sampled using a multi-stage, stratified-cluster, random-sampling method in the 2015 School-based Chinese Adolescents Health Survey (SCAHS). Setting Surveys conducted in high schools in six cities of China in 2015. Participants There were 24 457 students who were invited to participate and 23 039 students' questionnaires were completed and qualified for our survey. Measurements The outcomes comprised self-report of NMUPD (prior 30 days); a history of childhood maltreatment was our main predictor. Other covariates included depressive symptoms, smoking, drinking and demographics. Data were analysed using multi-level regression modelling. Findings Our final multivariable logistic regression models demonstrated that after adjusting for other variables, physical abuse was associated positively with non-medical use of opioids [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.13, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.10-1.22], sedatives (AOR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.10-1.21) and any prescription drugs (AOR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.09-1.20); emotional abuse, sexual abuse and emotional neglect were also associated with an increased risk of opioids, sedatives and any prescription drugs misuse; students who reported that they had experienced childhood physical neglect were more likely to be involved in the non-medical use of sedatives (AOR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.04-1.12) and any prescription drugs (AOR = 1.06, 95% CI = 1.03-1.10). Additionally, there was no evidence of interaction effects on NMUPD between depressive symptoms and each of physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, physical neglect and emotional neglect, respectively. Conclusions Maltreatment while a child is associated with an increased risk of non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) among Chinese adolescents. Being the target of peer victimization contributes to alcohol and cigarette use during early adolescence. This 1-year longitudinal study extended the current literature by investigating the potential links between peer victimization and alcohol and cigarette initiation among a sample of 723 youths recruited from three middle schools in Southern China. We proposed a moderated mediation model to examine whether peer victimization is indirectly related to substance use via deviant peer affiliation, and whether the strength of this mediation is moderated by the level of parental knowledge for both genders. All participants self-reported using questionnaires to assess peer victimization, deviant peer affiliation, parental knowledge, and substance use. The results revealed that peer victimization was indirectly associated with increased alcohol use via deviant peer affiliation for both genders. However, deviant peer affiliation mediated the impact of peer victimization on trying cigarettes for only boys. Moreover, parental knowledge acted as a protective role for increases in alcohol use for girls, but not for boys. These findings highlight the potential role of deviant peer affiliation to explain the relationship between peer victimization and substance use, and provide important implications for addressing the adverse consequences of peer victimization. BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are post-transcriptional gene suppressors and potential mediators of environmental effects. In addition to human miRNAs, viral miRNAs expressed from latent viral sequences are detectable in human cells. OBJECTIVE: In a highly exposed population in Beijing, China, we evaluated the associations of particulate air pollution exposure on blood miRNA profiles. METHODS: The Beijing Truck Driver Air Pollution Study (BTDAS) included 60 truck drivers and 60 office workers. We investigated associations of short-term air pollution exposure, using measures of personal PM2.5 (particulate matter ≤ 2.5 µm) and elemental carbon (EC), and ambient PM10 (≤ 10 µm), with blood NanoString nCounter miRNA profiles at two exams separated by 1--2 weeks. RESULTS: NO miRNA was significantly associated with personal PM2.5 at a false discovery rate (FDR) of 20%. Short-term ambient PM10 was associated with the expression of 12 miRNAs in office workers only (FDR < 20%). Short-term EC was associated with differential expression of 46 human and 7 viral miRNAs, the latter including 3 and 4 viral miRNAs in office workers and truck drivers, respectively. EC-associated miRNAs differed between office workers and truck drivers with significant effect modification by occupational group. Functional interaction network analysis suggested enriched cellular proliferation/differentiation pathways in truck drivers and proinflammation pathways in office workers. CONCLUSIONS: Short-term EC exposure was associated with the expression of human and viral miRNAs that may influence immune responses and other biological pathways. Associations between EC exposure and viral miRNA expression suggest that latent viral miRNAs are potential mediators of air pollution--associated health effects. Objectives:Disability, which has been proved to be associated with suicide and suicidal ideation, has received little attention in relation to suicidal attempts among the elderly. The aim of this study was to explore the influence of disability on attempted suicide within this demographic. Method:A multi-stage cluster sample of 8399 residents aged 60 or more was investigated from 15 communities in Shanghai, China. Disability was measured using the Lawton instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scale. Results:The prevalence of attempted suicide in the elderly was 0.75%. Specific IADL disabilities, including shopping (OR = 3.01, 95% CI = 1.56–5.81), preparing meals (OR = 4.12, 95% CI = 2.12–8.00), housekeeping (OR = 2.48, 95% CI = 1.01–6.06), doing laundry (OR = 2.82, 95% CI = 1.09–7.35), using transport (OR = 3.10, 95% CI = 1.36–6.99) and medical care (OR = 4.41, 95% CI = 2.10–9.17), were significantly and independently associated with attempted suicide in the elderly. The presence of at least one such disability was associated with an almost threefold increase in the attempted suicide rate, and the presence of five or more IADL disabilities was associated with an approximate fivefold increase in the attempted suicide rate. Conclusion:Specific IADL disabilities, such as preparing meals or dealing with medical care, may be significant predictive factors for risk of suicidal attempts among the elderly. After the Wenchuan earthquake, a large number of studies have focused on postearthquake psychological disorders among survivors; however, most of these studies were conducted within a relatively short period. This study was conducted to examine the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and general psychiatric morbidity among adult survivors 3 years after the Wenchuan earthquake, China. Through a multistage systematic sampling approach, a cross-sectional survey of 360 participants, 18 years or older, was conducted. The prevalence of PTSD and general psychiatric morbidity was 10.3% and 20.6%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed significant predictors for PTSD, including female gender and having felt guilt concerning someone’s death or injury. Significant predictors for general psychiatric morbidity included unmarried status and having been in serious danger. Background. Aberrant promoter methylation has been considered as a potential molecular marker for gastric cancer (GC). However, the role of methylation of FLNC, THBS1, and UCHL1 in the development and progression of GC has not been explored. Methods. The promoter methylation status of UCHL1, FLNC, THBS1, and DLEC1 was assessed by quantitative methylation-specific PCR (QMSP) in the serum of 82 GC patients, 46 chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) subjects, and 40 healthy controls. Results. All four genes had significantly higher methylation levels in GC patients than in CAG and control subjects. However, only UCHL1 methylation was significantly correlated with the tumor stage and lymph node metastasis. While THBS1 methylation was altered in an age-dependent manner, FLNC methylation was correlated with differentiation and Helicobacter pylori infection. DLEC1 methylation was only associated with tumor size. Moreover, methylated UCHL1 with or without THBS1 in the serum was found to be significantly associated with a poor prognosis. Conclusion. The promoter methylation degree of FLNC, THBS1, UCHL1, and DLEC1 in serum could tell the existence of GC and only UCHL1 in the serum was also associated with poor prognosis of GC. What are the social factors that matter most to the health of elderly Chinese? Are there any gender and age differences? Using a representative sample of elderly Chinese in Shanghai, the most developed city in China with the nation’s largest proportion of elderly residents, this study found that economic conditions, chronic health status, living arrangements, social activity participation, and caring for grandchildren are factors that are most important to the health of elderly Chinese. This is true for both self-rated health and psychological well-being. The beneficial effects of participation in social activities are particularly salient for elderly women and for the old–old, whereas the salutary effects of caring for grandchildren are more substantial for elderly men and for the young–old. Our findings suggest the importance of social engagement in promoting health and successful aging of elderly Chinese and disclose the moderating roles of gender and age in this focal relationship. Previous research suggested that parental behavioral control and psychological control have differential associations with adolescents' peer victimization. However, given that these two types of parental control are somewhat related but distinct from each other, it is critical to distinguish the unique relationship between each form of parental control and peer victimization. Furthermore, the mediating mechanism between parental control and peer victimization has not been thoroughly examined. The present study was designed to examine the unique associations of parental behavioral control and psychological control with Chinese adolescents' peer victimization, as well as the mediating role of self-control. A total of 694 7th-9th grade middle school students in China ( M age = 13.67, SD = 1.20) participated the survey by completing questionnaires about demographics, parental control, self-control, and peer victimization. Results indicated that: psychological control had positive associations with both overt and relational victimization, and these associations were partially mediated by adolescents' self control. In contrast, behavioral control was positively associated with self-control, which in turn negatively associated with peer victimization. On the other hand, behavioral control was positively associated with peer victimization. Hence, an inconsistent mediation was found due to the opposite signs and the same magnitudes of the direct and indirect relationships between behavioral control and peer victimization. Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effect of laser vaporization for vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia ( VAIN) after hysterectomy in Chinese women and to identify factors affecting persistence/recurrence. Material and Methods Twenty-eight VAIN patients after hysterectomy due to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (group 1) and 11 VAIN patients due to cervical cancer (group 2) were reviewed retrospectively. All patients were treated with at least one episode of laser vaporization between 2010 and 2011, and then followed up every 3 months for at least 1 year. Cox regression analysis was used to identify independent factors predicting persistence/recurrence. Results All VAIN patients achieved remission after two episodes of laser treatment, with 85.7% complete regression in group 1 and 54.5% in group 2. The first episode of the treatment had a significantly higher success rate in group 1 than in group 2 (46.2% vs 0.0%). All patients had no recurrence during a mean follow-up time of 22.8-27.8 months (range 12-39 months). However, infection persisted in 21 (61.8%) of 34 human-papillomavirus-positive patients after laser vaporization. Severity of VAIN was the only significant independent predictor of persistence/recurrence after one episode of the treatment (adjusted odds ratio, 4.08; 95% confidence interval, 1.28-12.96; P = 0.017). Laser treatments were well tolerated with no major side-effects. Conclusion Laser vaporization may be a useful option for the treatment of VAIN after hysterectomy. Global Positioning System (GPS) is currently the most frequently used wayfinding aid for driving. Yet, GPS is designed to act as a driving guide rather than to help users gain spatial knowledge. Accordingly, GPS might be less usable in situations where such knowledge is required or highly desirable. In this study, we experimentally study the influence of GPS display scales (single-scale vs. dual-scale) using simulated driving tasks in a virtual environment. The single-scale GPS is similar to the regular GPS view. The dual-scale GPS aid is a dual-scale navigation tool that provides two levels of detail, including both detailed and contextual information. The results demonstrate that the dual-scale GPS was more efficient in leading the participants to the destination during the simulated driving and was more useful for the participants to establish spatial awareness and a cognitive map; the dual-scale GPS participants also reported higher subjective evaluations. The proposed dual-scale GPS design and experimental results show some indications for designing new wayfinding aids aimed at increasing wayfinding performance while simultaneously helping users construct a cognitive map. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of Chinese traditional exercise such as t'ai chi and qigong (TCQ) on patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: All prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trials, published in English or Chinese and involving the use of TCQ by patients with COPD, were searched in 10 electronic databases from their respective inceptions to July 2012. The methodological quality of all studies was assessed using the Jadad score. The selection of studies, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed independently by two raters. Results: In the results, 10 trials met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed. The meta-analysis demonstrated that compared with no exercise, TCQ had significant effects on 6-minute walk distance, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), predicted FEV1 percentage, and St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire score. There were no significant differences in all outcomes between TCQ and other exercise training except 6-minute walk distance. Conclusions: In conclusion, TCQ might be beneficial with respect to physical performance, lung function, remission of dyspnea, and quality of life in patients with COPD; however, caution is needed to draw a firm conclusion because of the low methodological quality of the included trials. Purpose: As an inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase that catalyses the first step of cholesterol synthesis, pitavastatin undergoes little hepatic metabolism; however, it is a substrate of uptake and efflux transporters. Since pitavastatin is potentially co-administered with agents that affect transporter activities, the pharmacokinetics of pitavastatin was investigated on the effects of a single-dose rifampin in healthy volunteers. Methods: Twelve Chinese healthy male volunteers took 4 mg pitavastatin orally with 150 ml water or with a single dose of 600 mg rifampin on separate occasions and the plasma concentrations of pitavastatin were measured over 48 h by HPLC-MS/MS. Results: A single dose of rifampin significantly increased the mean area under the plasma concentration-time curve(AUC) and C of pitavastatin by 573.5 %(95%CI, 373.3-773.7 %, p < 0.001) and 819.2 %(95 % CI, 515.4-1123.0 %, p < 0.001) respectively, while significantly decreased the t and CL/F of pitavastatin by 38.8 % (95 % CI, 18.2-59.4 %, p < 0.001) and 81.4 % (95 % CI, 75.0-87.7 %, p < 0.001) respectively. Conclusions: Co-administration of pitavastatin with a single dose of rifampin resulted in a significant increase in plasma levels of pitavastatin in Chinese healthy subjects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies over 5 decades have examined ABO blood groups and risk of pancreatic cancer in Western, Asian, and other populations, though no systematic review has been published. We studied data from 908 pancreatic cancer cases and 1,067 population controls collected during December 2006–January 2011 in urban Shanghai, China, and reviewed the literature for all studies of this association. Random-effects meta-analysis provided summary odds ratio estimates according to blood group and by populations endemic versus nonendemic for cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA)-positive Helicobacter pylori. In our Shanghai study, versus group O, only ABO group A was associated with risk (odds ratio (OR) = 1.60, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.27, 2.03). In 24 pooled studies, group A showed increased risk in both CagA-nonendemic and -endemic populations (ORpooled = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.32, 1.49). In nonendemic populations, groups B and AB were also associated with higher risk (OR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.16, 1.64; and OR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.24, 1.85, respectively). However, in CagA-endemic populations, groups B and AB were not associated with risk (OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 0.92, 1.19; and OR = 1.13, 95% CI: 0.92, 1.38, respectively). These population differences were significant. One explanation for contrasts in associations of blood groups B and AB between CagA-endemic and -nonendemic populations could involve gastric epithelial expression of A versus B antigens on colonization behaviors of CagA-positive and CagA-negative H. pylori strains. Background: There is consistent evidence of the co-occurrence of poor mental health and asthma in Western populations. Since the experience and expression of mental health is partly culturally determined, it is of interest to examine if similar associations are found in other cultural settings. In that regard, very little is known about the association between mental health and asthma in Asian countries, such as China. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between mental health and asthma in a large sample from China. Method: We used data from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study phase 3 ( n = 9,280). Participants reported physician-diagnosed asthma. Mental health measures included the 15-item Chinese version of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-C) and the SF-12 Mental Component Summary (MCS) score. We compared the prevalence of asthma by GDS-C and MCS scores by estimating prevalence ratios (PRs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI), using Poisson regression. Results: Compared to those without depression, the prevalence of asthma was higher in those with moderate or severe depression levels (PR = 2.63, 95% CI = 1.58-4.40 and PR = 4.43, 95% CI = 1.62-12.09, p for trend ≤0.0001). The prevalence of asthma increased by 46% with every 1 standard deviation increase of the GDS-C score (PR = 1.46, 95% CI = 1.24-1.73). The MCS score was not associated with asthma. Conclusion: Depressive symptoms were associated with asthma prevalence in a Chinese population. Further research into the mechanism and potential directions of causality is warranted. Background: To evaluate the conditions of palliative chemotherapy in terminally ill patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and to discuss the potential factors that affect the prognosis of these patients. Methods: All 205 terminally ill patients with advanced NSCLC, who died in our hospital during the period from 2006 to 2010, were included in the study. Basic information was collected and details for the treatment of patients, related to overall survival, were evaluated. Results: One hundred and fifty-nine out of 205 patients (77.6%) were treated with palliative chemotherapy. Of these, 59.7% patients were treated with palliative chemotherapy in the last three months and 27.7% patients in the last one-month, prior to their expiration, respectively. In addition, 22.0% of the 159 patients were treated with palliative chemotherapy for the first time in the last three months and 10.1% in the last month of their final days. We have shown that patients treated with palliative chemotherapy in their last three and final month had a shorter overall survival rate than those patients who were not treated with palliative chemotherapy. Conclusion: A large proportion of patients with advanced NSCLC received palliative chemotherapy near the end of their life. Purpose: Nateglinide is commonly used in the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Our objective was to assess the association between CYP2C9 and SLCO1B1 polymorphisms and the metabolism of nateglinide in healthy Chinese male volunteers. Methods: A total of 35 healthy Chinese male volunteers with different CYP2C9 and SLCO1B1 genotypes were given a single oral dose of 120 mg nateglinide. Plasma concentrations of nateglinide and blood glucose level were measured up to 8 h. Results: In subjects with the CYP2C9*1/*3 & 521TT, CYP2C9*1/*1 & 521TC/CC and CYP2C9*1/*3 & 521TC genotype, AUC of nateglinide was 56 %, 34 % and 56 % higher ( P = 0.002, P = 0.041 and P = 0.013, respectively), and the CL/F of nateglinide was 35 %, 11 % and 36 % lower ( P = 0.000, P = 0.003 and P = 0.002, respectively) than that in the reference group. When only considering 521 T>C polymorphism, it had no significant association with the pharmacokinetics of nateglinide. CYP2C9*3 and 521 T>C polymorphisms were the significant predictors of the AUC and CL/F of nateglinide (adjusted multiple R = 34 % and 43 %, respectively) according to multiple linear regression analyses, but they have no significant association with changes in the blood glucose-lowering effect of nateglinide. Conclusions: Both SLCO1B1 521 T>C and the CYP2C9*3 polymorphisms can significantly affect the pharmacokinetics of nateglinide, but they could only partially explain the interindividual variability of plasma concentration of nateglinide. Moreover, 521 T>C and the CYP2C9*3 polymorphisms have no effect on pharmacodynamics of nateglinide in healthy Chinese male subjects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To report on the design and basic outcomes of three interventions aimed at improving the use and quality of maternity care in rural China: financial interventions, training in clinical skills, and training in health education. Community-based cluster randomized trials were carried out in one central and two western provinces between 2007 and 2009: (1) financial interventions covered part of women's costs for prenatal and postnatal care, (2) training of midwives in clinical skills was given by local maternity care experts in two- or three-group training courses, (3) health education training for midwives and village doctors were given by local experts in health education in two- or three-group training courses. A survey was conducted in a stratified random sample of women who had been pregnant in the study period. 73% of women (n = 3,673) were interviewed within 1-10 months of giving birth. Outcomes were compared by the different intervention and control groups. Adjusted odds ratios were calculated by logistic regression to adjust for varying maternal characteristics. Most of the differences found between the groups were small and some varied between provinces. The financial intervention did not influence the number of visits, but was associated with increased caesarean sections and a decrease in many ultrasound tests. The clinical intervention influenced some indicators of care content. There was no consistent finding for the health education intervention. Financial and training interventions have the potential to improve maternity care, but better implementation is required. Unintended consequences, including overuse of technology, are possible. Aim To assess the associations of oral hygiene and periodontal health with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD) exacerbations. Material and Methods In total, 392 COPD patients were divided into frequent and infrequent exacerbation (≥2 times and <2 times in last 12 months) groups. Their lung function and periodontal status were examined. Information on oral hygiene behaviours was obtained by interview. Results In the univariate analysis, fewer remaining teeth, high plaque index ( PLI) scores, low tooth brushing times, and low regular supra-gingival scaling were significantly associated with COPD exacerbations (all p-values <0.05). After adjustment for age, gender, body mass index, COPD severity and dyspnoea severity, the associations with fewer remaining teeth ( p = 0.02), high PLI scores ( p = 0.02) and low tooth brushing times ( p = 0.008) remained statistically significant. When stratified by smoking, fewer remaining teeth ( OR = 2.05, 95% CI: 1.04-4.02) and low tooth brushing times ( OR = 4.90, 95% CI: 1.26-19.1) among past smokers and high PLI scores ( OR = 3.43, 95% CI: 1.19-9.94) among never smokers were significantly associated with COPD exacerbations. Conclusions Fewer remaining teeth, high PLI scores, and low tooth brushing times are significant correlates of COPD exacerbations, indicating that improving periodontal health and oral hygiene may be a potentially preventive strategy against COPD exacerbations. Because the public and private sectors often operate with different goals, individuals employed by the two sectors may receive different levels of welfare. This can potentially lead to different health status. As such, employment sector offers an important perspective for understanding labor market outcomes. Using micro-level data from a recent Chinese household survey, this study empirically evaluated the impact of employment sector on health and within-sector health inequalities. It found that public sector employment generated better health outcomes than private sector employment, controlling for individual characteristics. The provision of more job security explained an important part of the association between public sector employment and better health. The study also found less health inequality by social class within the public sector. These findings suggest that policymakers should think critically about the "conventional wisdom" that private ownership is almost always superior, and should adjust their labor market policies accordingly. Aims: We evaluated if killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor 3DL2 gene (KIR3DL2) polymorphisms are a key factor in the development of preeclampsia. Methods: In this case-control study, 105 pregnant women with PE (PE group) were enrolled. Their A52G in exon 3 and C32T in exon 9 polymorphisms of the KIR3DL2 genotypes were determined by polymorphism chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) from venous blood samples and compared with the corresponding KIR3DL2 genotypes of 103 pregnant women with uncomplicated pregnancies (control group). Results: Carriers of the A allele in exon 3 of KIR3DL2 gene occurred less frequently in PE than in controls [P=0.001; odds ratio (OR)=2.65, range: 1.5-4.7]. No significant difference was found about allelic frequencies of KIR3DL2 gene C32T in exon 9 in women with preeclampsia as compared to controls. A significant difference between the two groups of genotypic frequencies of KIR3DL2 gene A52G in exon 3 and KIR3DL2 gene C32T in exon 9 polymorphisms was found (P=0.003 and P=0.000). There was no significant difference between genotypic or allelic frequencies in women with mild preeclampsia compared to sever preeclampsia. Conclusions: Our results suggest that carriers of A allele in exon 3 have a decreased susceptibility to PE. It is likely that the presence of the CC genotype in exon 9 has a considerable effect on disease progression. The mutation of the two sites is not associated with the severity of preeclampsia. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex immune disease. The genetic variation in the NCF2 gene was found to associate with SLE in US and European populations. However, the association of rs10911363 with SLE was not extensively studied in Chinese mainland population. A total of 488 SLE patients and 380 controls were recruited. Unlabeled probe-based high-resolution melting analysis (HRMA) was used in genotyping. HRMA with unlabeled probe successfully distinguished all genotypes. Neither genotype nor allele frequencies of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs10911363 showed statistically significant differences between SLE patients and controls. The association of SNP rs10911363 with the diagnostic criteria of SLE was also examined. Minor allele (G) of rs10911363 was found to significantly associate with the incidence of arthritis ( p = 0.024, odds ratio (OR) = 1.35, and 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.04-1.75) and increased abnormalities of antinuclear antibody ( p = 0.002, OR = 1.51, and 95%CI = 1.17-1.95) and anti-DNA ( p = 0.013, OR = 1.40, and 95%CI = 1.07-1.82).
