Two Thousand Seventeen: Sesquicentennial Poems (2018) is a collection of forty-nine exquisite poems - twenty-nine by Richard M. Grove and twenty by John B. Lee, brought together to celebrate the sesquicentennial anniversary of Canada’s birth in the year 2017. Diverse in their themes, style and depth, the brilliant welding together of these poems into a firm composite owes itself to an overarching topophilia. The present paper attempts to undertake a bio-centric reading of the book from the point of view of contemporary theories in Ecocriticism and seeks to establish these poems as being predominantly about place and the ways in which we root in and relate to it. It proposes that these poems can, in Timothy Morton’s words, be termed as ecological rhapsodies in which nature is both protagonist and witness and in whose rhythms, both sustenance and wisdom are to be discovered. Poetry, among the arts, remains understudied as a means for community development. To address this scarcity, this paper considers the use of poetry as a community development tool and discusses its uniqueness in this role. It offers a description and analysis of an exploratory, qualitative research study carried out with twelve respondents in Montreal, Canada, who participated in community-based creative writing groups. Evaluation suggested that, overall, the poetry groups made a positive contribution to community building and development. This paper locates the study in the context of community development and the arts and includes references to poetry therapy and social action-based creative writing. In this paper we report on one aspect of a qualitative study about an online wiki community, which was developed to build collaborative knowledge about poetry among a group of pre-service English teachers. Our paper explores pre-service teachers' experiences of writing in a digital medium and their perceptions of themselves as writers. We focus specifically on the processes of poetry writing (both collaborative and independent) undertaken in this digital medium by two groups of teachers, who were working in contrasting settings in the UK and Canada during their pre-service year. We investigate the affordances (Laurillard, Stratford, Lucklin, Plowman, & Taylor, 2000) that a multimodal, wiki environment offered these teachers for learning about poetry writing and question the impact that these affordances have had both on the teachers' collaborations and the poetry they wrote. In analysing the pre-service teachers' wiki writings we were interested to observe how they shaped themselves as writers and intervened in each other's work in progress within a digital third space. We also wanted to explore how the wiki had supported their professional learning about the teaching of poetry writing during their training year and the implications that this support could have for their own future classroom practice as teachers of writing. In this article I discuss the ways in which writing poetry and reflecting on its meanings may be a valuable tool for promoting an educator's reflexivity surrounding issues of reconciliation. As Canada embarks on the work of healing the difficulties its colonial past has caused its original inhabitants (i.e. Indigenous peoples), educators must explore ways in which they can contribute to a more socially just, democratic, and healthy society. By utilising the theoretical framework of Dialogical Self Theory (DST) to describe and explore identity and the writing of poetry as an exploration of self, it becomes possible for myself, as an educator, to unearth my own biases and begin to create safe spaces for identity exploration, learning, and healing. In this article, the author experiments with artful writing as a means of contemplating research with internationally educated female teachers. In doing so, she sits with, listens to, writes from particular moments of the research process. The author also composes found poems from words and phrases in the transcripts. Her intention is to dwell with particular artifacts, rather than analyze or interpret them according to a theoretical framework. In this work, she considers Deleuze and Guattari’s writing about art and also Shambhala/Buddhist Chögyam Trungpa’s teachings about Dharma art—all of whom contend that art is a form of bodily attunement to and awareness of the physical world through perception, the senses, sensation rather than a means of expressing the self and/or representing something. In this essay, the author compares and contrasts the literary theories of Canadian poets and literary scholars Jan Zwicky and Anne Carson, focusing particularly on the books "Lyric Philosophy" and "Wisdom & Metaphor" by Zwicky as well as Carson's "Eros the Bittersweet." It explores the competing approaches to defining and using the term lyric within their literary criticisms.

This article explains how Duncan Campbell Scott, in his poem "The Height of Land," failed to elucidate on the concept of Aboriginal title by examining more closely the landscape he had traveled when he was a treaty commissioner. Scott had worked in the Canadian Department of Indian Affairs from 1879 to 1932. It is pointed out that poet, being a foreigner, remained at odds with the land he was describing. It is noted that he failed to fully comprehend the land's spirit.

Drawing from in-depth qualitative research of poetry communities in New York City and Toronto, Canada, and grounded in theories of gift relations and Bourdieu's conception of fields of literary production (1996), this article argues that the sustainability of the arts must include visions of sustainability that extend beyond the economic if they are to be true to the internal experience and definitions of fields of artistic production. This article argues that relations among poets can be understood as exemplars of a gift economy and that these gift relations among poets contribute to the sustainability of this artistic field and career.
