Pavements are critical components of highway assets, but accurately estimating their value can be challenging due to the lack of connection between valuation and long-term service performance degradation. To address this issue, the replacement cost and condition-based valuation methods were introduced using the Yunnan province highway in China as an example, which divided pavement into four performance states based on service stages. The rationality of maintenance decisions and the impact of preventive maintenance investment on life cycle assessments were also considered. The results indicate that there are issues of irrational allocation of maintenance funds of the highway in Yunnan province, and a higher proportion of preventive maintenance investment is required. Moreover, it is recommended to balance the maintenance funds for bridge and tunnel engineering in the following year, focusing on bridge engineering with a rapid decline in the newness rate. The implementation of preventive maintenance has a positive correlation with the replacement cost and newness rate of the road sections. Through comparison, it was found that the road surface renewal rate in 2019 was lower than that in 2018, and some highway management departments in certain regions need to adjust their preventive maintenance strategies. Overall, the condition-based pavement asset valuation method comprehensively considers each stage of pavement operation and can serve as an effective tool for evaluating pavement asset depreciation. Objectives : This study was aimed to investigate the gender-related differences of regional cerebral glucose metabolism in healthy people along the age using 18F-FDG PET/CT. Methods : We recruited 344 healthy volunteers, including 217 males and 127 females (age range: 40–89 years old). All subjects underwent fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose(18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET). All the data were divided into four groups for every 10 years old. Each participant was carefully screened from PET, MR, and other examinations in order to exclude the abnormalities, such as neurodegenerative or psychiatric disorders, alcohol/abuse, cerebral vascular disorders, metabolic diseases like diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism, and other systemic malignancies. The 40–50 years old group was set as the baseline group. Statistical parametric mapping (SPM) analysis was employed to illustrate the differences among groups. Results : Compared to the baseline group, whether in a cohort or different gender groups, the decrease of brain glucose metabolism was shown in the bilateral frontal lobe, anterior cingulate gyrus, and the bilateral temporal lobe. In males, the regions of decreased metabolism were bilateral frontal lobe, caudate nucleus, and cingulate gyrus, whereas that of females were left occipital lobe, cerebellum, and the thalamus. However, the overall decrease of brain metabolism in men and women began from the age of 60s, an aggravated decrease from 70s was only observed in males. Conclusion : (1) An obviously decreased brain metabolism was found from 60 years old, especially in the bilateral frontal lobe, bilateral temporal lobe, and inferior cingulate gyrus; (2) We found specific brain metabolic differences between genders, including the caudate nucleus region in males and the occipital lobe region in females; and (3) The aging trend is different between genders. This study was carried out to explore clinical treatment and prognosis of patients with AA with different economic status. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical outcome of 301 patients with AA in our center from April 2008 to November 2017. Treatments included anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) or anti-lymphocyte globulin (ALG) combined with cyclosporineA (CsA) (9%), allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) (7%), CsA combined with androgen or CsA alone (hereinafter referred to as CsA group) (77%), no specific therapy (7%). The 5-year overall survival (OS) was higher in patients with non-severe AA (94.6%) compared with those with severe AA (SAA) (66.6%, P <.001), very severe AA (VSAA) (41.3%, P <.001). The 5-year OS was 76.5% in patients with SAA/VSAA treated with ATG/ALG combined with CsA, 75% in allo-HSCT group(P =.936), 63.6% in CsA group (P =.557), which was significantly higher than no specific therapy group (21.8%, P =.002). For those who responded to CsA , the duration of CsA (median follow-up time: 27 months, 1–101 months) was positively correlated with progression-free survival (r=0.603, P <.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that 36–65 years of age, SAA/VSAA, and no specific therapy were independent risk factors for inferior survival. The treatment of elderly patients with AA still faces challenges. CsA is benefit to the survival of SAA/VSAA patients. AA patients, who responded to initialy CsA treatment, may benefit from prolonged CsA treatment. In view of the side effects of CsA, the timing of withdrawal is worth further exploration. Bacillus coagulans has been widely studied for its probiotic properties. Therefore, identifying a strain that can be used as an adjunct starter culture for yogurt production would have commercial value. In this study, 30 B. coagulans strains were isolated from vegetable samples from 11 provinces or autonomous regions in China, and their pan-genomic and phylogenetic characteristics were analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis categorized 30 strains into 4 different subphylotypes, including subtype I (11 isolates), subtype II (7 isolates), subtype III (11 isolates), and subtype IV (1 isolate). Four B. coagulans strains (B. coagulans -70, B. coagulans -78, B. coagulans -79, and B. coagulans -100) were randomly selected from each subphylotype of the phylogenetic tree as adjunct starter cultures. Compared with the other tested strains, B. coagulans -70 showed the highest count in yogurt at the end of the manufacturing period. Comparative genome analysis indicated that the different bacterial levels of B. coagulans strains in yogurt may be associated with the abundance of genes related to carbohydrate transport and metabolism (e.g., sucrose utilization). Finally, differences in texture and volatile flavor compound profiles were observed between the yogurt samples. Compared with the other groups, the addition of B. coagulans -70 exerted a positive effect on the appearance and texture of yogurt products. Volatile analysis showed increased quantities of 2-heptanone, 2-nonanone, amyl alcohol, and 2-hydroxy-3-pentanone in the B. coagulans -70 group compared with control yogurts. These results above combined with the results of a sensory evaluation indicated that B. coagulans -70 is the most suitable strain for further use in functional dairy product development. The COVID-19 pandemic has a heavy impact on the mental health of elderly surgical patients worldwide. In particular, the elderly patients faced considerable psychological stress due to various environmental and medical factors during the outbreak. This study aims to examine changes in mental health trends among non-cardiac surgical patients aged 65 and above in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. This multi-center, convenient sampling, longitudinal observational study was conducted from April 1, 2020 to April 30, 2022. Primary outcome was the prevalence of postoperative depression. Secondary outcome was the prevalence of postoperative anxiety. Follow-up was conducted separately at 7 days and 30 days after surgery. Depression symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) scale. Anxiety symptoms were assessed using Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale, with scores of ≥5 defining positive depression or anxiety symptoms. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to investigate risk factors of mental health status in more elderly patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. A total of 4639 patients were included, of whom 2279 (46.0 %) were male, 752 (15.2 %) were over the age of 75, and 4346 (93.7 %) were married. The monthly prevalence trends demonstrated that compared to the outbreak period, a significant reduction in the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in elderly patients who underwent surgery during the post-pandemic period. In post-pandemic period, a statistically significant decrease in the prevalence of all severity depression and anxiety patients was noted at the 7-day follow-up, but no significant decrease was observed for severe depression and anxiety in the 30-day follow-up. In COVID-19 low-risk area, a significant overall decrease in prevalence of mental health was observed during the post-pandemic period compared to the outbreak period, including 7-day depression, 7-day anxiety, 30-day depression, and 30-day anxiety (all with P < 0.001). Female and patients with ≥2 comorbidities appeared to be more susceptible to postoperative depression and anxiety during the pandemic. Objective: This study aims to analyze the serotype distribution and drug resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from children aged 8 days to 7 years in Urumqi, China, between 2014 to 2021, during which PCV13 was introduced in the private sector's immunization program and COVID-19 control was administrated in the last 2 years., Methods: Serotypes of S. pneumoniae isolates were determined by Quellung reaction, and their susceptibility against 14 antimicrobials were tested. According to the start year of PCV13 administration (2017) and COVID-19 control (2020), the study period was divided into three stages: 2014-2015, 2018-2019, and 2020-2021., Results: A total of 317 isolates were involved in this study. The most common serotypes were type 19F (34.4%), followed by 19A (15.8%), 23F (11.7%), 6B (11.4%), and 6A(5.0%). The coverage rate of both PCV13 and PCV15 was 83.0%. The coverage of PCV20 was a little higher at 85.2%. The resistance rate against penicillin was 28.6% according to the breakpoints of oral penicillin, which would reach up to 91.8% based on the breakpoints of parenteral penicillin for meningitis. The resistance rates to erythromycin, clindamycin, tetracycline, and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim were 95.9%, 90.2%, 88.9%, and 78.8%, respectively. The PCV13 isolate was more resistant to penicillin than the non-PCV13 ones. There was not any significant change found in the serotype distribution since the PCV13 introduction and the COVID-19 control. Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is widely acknowledged as a severe traumatic event, and depression, anxiety, and psychological distress are common in diagnosed patients. However, the correlations of biological indicators with emotion are rarely reported. The primary objective of this study was to explore the dysfunction of immune-inflammatory characteristics in patients with depression-anxiety symptoms., Methods: We investigated the mental status of inpatients with COVID-19 in Wuhan and compared the differences in cytokines and lymphocytes between patients with and without depression-anxiety symptoms at admission. After two weeks of treatment, we evaluated the mental conditions and measured the cytokines and lymphocytes of the patients with depression and anxiety symptoms and explored the changes and their associations., Results: Approximately half of the patients with COVID-19 had depression and anxiety symptoms, and the symptoms were related to the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ and the level of CD4 + T lymphocytes. When compared with patients without depression-anxiety symptoms, CD4 + T lymphocytes level was significantly higher in COVID-19 patients with depression-anxiety symptoms., Conclusion: This study provided novel evidence regarding the association between depression and anxiety symptoms and immune characteristics, especially CD4 + T lymphocyte levels, in COVID-19 patients. Based on the recently proposed Chinese ischemic stroke subclassification (CISS) system, intracranial branch atheromatous disease (BAD) is divided into large artery atherosclerosis (LAA) and penetrating artery disease (PAD). In the current retrospective analysis, we compared the general characteristics of BAD-LAA with BAD-PAD, BAD-LAA with non-BAD-LAA and BAD-PAD with non-BAD-PAD. The study included a total of 80 cases, including 45 cases of BAD and 35 cases of non-BAD. Subjects were classified using CISS system: BAD-LAA, BAD-PAD, non-BAD-LAA and non-BAD-PAD. In addition to analysis of general characteristics, the correlation between the factors and the two subtypes of BAD was evaluated. The number of cases included in the analysis was: 32 cases of BAD-LAA, 13 cases of BAD-PAD, 21 cases of non-BAD-LAA, and 14 cases of non-BAD-PAD. Diabetes mellitus affected more non-BAD-LAA patients than BAD-LAA patients (P=0.035). In comparison with non-BAD-PAD, patients with BAD-PAD were younger (P=0.040), had higher initial NIHSS score (P<0.001) and morbidity of ischemic heart disease (P=0.033). Within patients with BAD, the PAD subtype was associated with smoking (OR=0.043; P=0.011), higher low-density lipoprotein (OR=5.339; P=0.029), ischemic heart disease (OR=9.383; P=0.047) and diabetes mellitus (OR=12.59; P=0.020). It was concluded that large artery atherosclerosis was the primary mechanism of BAD. The general characteristics showed no significant differences between the CISS subtypes of LAA and PAD within BAD, as well as between the BAD and non-BAD within LAA subtype. Several differences between PAD subtypes of BAD and non-BAD were revealed.

Signet ring cell gastric cancer (SRCGC) has very poor prognosis worldwide, and studying its molecular characteristics is urgent for improving the outcome. However, few well-characterized SRCGC cell lines are available for research. Therefore, we established a novel cell line GCSR1, from a Chinese male SRCGC patient. Cell morphology of GCSR1 in culture, maintained in vitro for over 90 passages, is similar to the cells from the patient. GCSR1 cells proliferated in vitro with a doubling time of 67.65 h. Karyotyping showed they were aneuploid. Missense mutation occurred in codon 193 of P53 and deletion occurred in exons 1 and 3 of P16. Results of CCK8 assay revealed that GCSR1 was more resistant to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and mitomycin (MMC) than other gastric cancer cell lines. Stem cell marker assay by flow cytometry showed that GCSR1 had high proportion of CD44+ and/or CD133+ cells. It formed colonies easily in soft agar and generated xenograft tumors in nude mice. In conclusion, GCSR1 is a well-established, well-characterized multi-drug resistant cell line with abundant cancer stem cells.

Background: The Amplatzer ventricular septal defect (VSD) occluder has a fixed stainless steel pin bottom protruding out of the surface at the center of the discs on both sides. Theoretically, this protruding bottom may interfere with epithelialization or, in some cases, cause thrombosis., Objective: To evaluate a new type of pan-nitinol VSD occluder without the protruding stainless steel pin bottom on both sides in a canine VSD model designed to ensure safety, effectiveness, and feasibility., Methods and Results: VSDs were successfully created by transseptal ventricular septal puncture with a Brockenbrough needle and dilation with an 8-mm-diameter balloon via the right jugular vein in 9 out of 12 canines. The new type VSD occluder was successfully implanted in 8 of the 9 modeled canines. No procedure- or device-related complication was observed. Transthoracic echocardiography and MRI 2 months after device implantations showed that there was no device dislocation or heart valve dysfunction in 6 of the 8 tested canines. In addition, gross and pathological examinations 3-6 months after implantation showed no corrosion of the devices or serious inflammatory reactions in the modeled animals. Complete endothelialization was seen over the surface of the discs., Conclusions: The new pan-nitinol VSD device can be successfully implanted in a canine VSD model via a transcatheter approach featuring high success rate, low risk of procedure-related complications, and sound biocompatibility. The result suggests that this new VSD occluder could be used safely in future clinical trials for further test.

Aim: To investigate bilirubin UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT1A1) gene allele in healthy Chinese neonates, their cord bilirubin level and the subsequent hyperbilirubinemia to determine relationships among them., Methods: Cord blood of 48 neonates was obtained to determine the exon 1 of UGT1A1 gene, total serum bilirubin, albumin, glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT), glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) and haemoglobin (Hb) concentration. Neonatal jaundice was assessed by measurement of transcutaneous bilirubin (TCB) and serum bilirubin. Neonates were divided into two groups according to mutant or normal allele to compare the variables., Results: Nineteen infants had the nucleotide 211 G-->A allele, 3 had the heterozygous variation (686C-->A, 845 A-->T, 231G-->A). In the 211 A allele group, cord bilirubin was significantly higher than in the 211 G allele group (p = 0.034), but there were no differences in albumin (p = 0.678), GPT (p = 0.460), GOT (p = 0.440) and Hb (p = 0.886). The TCB (at 48, 96 h), the frequency of the hyperbilirubinemia and prolonged jaundice were also significantly higher in the 211 A allele group., Conclusions: The UGT1A1 gene codon G71R allele is a risk factor for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in the Chinese population. Its effect on bilirubin metabolism may present early on, as well as late in foetal life.
