The interaction processes of electromagnetic fields with biological tissues have been extensively studied over the last decades. However, while the exposure of humans and animals to electromagnetic radiation has been the subject of numerous research papers, it is not so common to find studies in the scientific literature that address the effects of plant exposure to radioelectric emissions. In this paper, 24 different seed sets were exposed to an electromagnetic field continuous wave at 2.45 GHz of low and medium power levels in a controlled environment. Radiated power densities at seed location for low levels range from 3.5 to $3820~\mu $ W/cm2 in free space inside an anechoic chamber. For medium power levels a waveguide was used, which produced power density levels at seed location from 502.7 to 2097.9 mW/cm2. Exposition time was also controlled from periods of just 4.7 seconds to 16 full days. Subsequently, the samples were transferred to a culture chamber for germination keeping growth conditions constant for all samples. Great care was taken in the strict protocols of sample preparation, radiation, and growth tests. Finally, different growth parameters were analyzed. The results show that, under certain exposure conditions, the germination process is affected. Generally, most of the seeds exposed to medium power, completed their germination earlier than the untreated control. In the other hand, seeds treated at low power and high exposure times generally slowed down their germination.

This work presents a reconfigurable-band analog filter capable of performing the low-pass, high-pass, band-pass or all-pass functions. The proposed filter is a simple and compact cell composed of only two RC networks and one differential Operational Transconductance Amplifier (OTA). To select the desired filter type, two configurations must be done: 1) the two RC network shall be configured as low-pass/low-pass, high-pass/high-pass or low-pass/high-pass, 2) the input signals must be fed in differential or single mode. To validate theory and simulations, the proposed reconfigurable-band filter was designed, fabricated and measured to meet the biomedical band (0.1 Hz - 10 kHz) in a $0.5 ~\mu \text{m}$ CMOS standard fabrication process. To achieve the extremely low RC time constants imposed by the biomedical band, the R element was implemented using PMOS high-value programmable resistor. The prototype exhibits a silicon area of $470 ~\mu \text{m}$ x $250 ~\mu \text{m}$ and a power consumption of $96.32 ~\mu \text{W}$ using a ± 0.8 V symmetric power supply. Due to this circuit’s ability to perform four filter-functions, its operation band can be tuned over five decades, its power consumption is in the nano and micro-watt regime, and it is area compact, the proposed analog filter is a suitable candidate for being an analog standard-cell.

Colon cancer has had a significant increase in its incidence in recent years. Many of the cases are diagnosed late; it is not unusual that a large number of cases present metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis, and the liver is the main organ where these lesions occur. Surgical approach to this condition has undergone many advances which have allowed a better approach to them. Local techniques such as embolization have gained momentum in recent years and are a great help to the surgical planning. We present the case of a 72-year-old female patient diagnosed with colorectal cancer and metastatic disease. Multiple liver tumors were demonstrated by imaging studies. A staged resection of the primary tumor and the metastatic hepatic tumors was planned. It was decided to perform an embolization of the hepatic artery to cause hypertrophy of the left lobe before the second stage of the surgical approach with good clinical and laboratorial findings after the surgery. Follow-up with adjuvant chemotherapy, imaging studies and tumor markers is planned. Several publications state that surgical approach of metastatic disease is still controversial and that decisions should be made under the context of each patient. Many techniques have shown good results; embolization of the hepatic tumors has a good outcome in the survival rate in selected patients. Hepatic volume and future liver remnant should be always assessed with imaging studies. Each case has to be individualized for the approach of the metastatic disease, always in a coordinated teamwork for maximum benefit of the patient.

Abstract The following article aims to analyse the current situation in Venezuela, identifying some helpful information written by academics on this topic. Thus, this essay will focus on the five stages a government faces when it loses legitimacy, as described by Samuel Huntington in his book Democracy's third wave. Furthermore, after analysing them, it will draw some arguments explaining why Venezuela has not made a U-turn into democracy yet, to end with a conclusion. En este estudio se ha utilizado la base de datos de publicaciones científicas Scopus para analizar los artículos que incluyen el concepto de incertidumbre política como variable de estudio en las ciencias económicas y administrativas. El análisis se basa técnicas bibliométricas aplicadas para el periodo comprendido entre los años 2010 y 2022. Dentro de los hallazgos del estudio se encuentra que el uso del concepto de incertidumbre política es amplio en investigaciones aplicadas en las ciencias económicas y administrativas. Asimismo, se observa que conceptos afines tales como: incertidumbre de la política económica, riesgo político y cambio climático, también muestran recurrencia como palabras claves de los estudios. Por último, se aprecia que países tales como Estados Unidos y China son los que más contribuyen en el número de publicaciones, así como determinados autores y revistas evidencian alto impacto a partir de la medición de métricas como el índice H.

This manuscript shows the CMOS design of Lorenz systems using operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs). Two Lorenz systems are then synchronized in a master–slave topology and used to implement a CMOS secure communication system. The contribution is devoted to the correct design of first- and second-order OTA-C filters, using 180 nm CMOS technology, to guarantee chaotic behavior. First, Simulink is used to simulate a secure communication system using two Lorenz systems connected in a master–slave topology, which is tested using sinusoidal signals that are masked by chaotic signals. Second, the Lorenz systems are scaled to have amplitudes of the state variables below 1 Volt, to allow for CMOS design using OTA-C filters. The transconductances of the OTAs are tuned to accomplish a Laplace transfer function. In this manner, this work highlights the design of a second-order CMOS OTA-C filter, whose damping factor is tuned to generate appropriate chaotic behavior. Finally, chaotic masking is performed by designing a whole CMOS secure communication system by using OTA-C based Lorenz systems, and its SPICE simulation results show its appropriateness for hardware security applications.

Abstract A three‐stage rail‐to‐rail bulk‐driven class AB OTA that operates with ±0.15 V supplies and a power dissipation of 90 nW is introduced. The first two stages use resistive local common mode feedback. The OTA uses simple phase lead compensation. It has a 36 MHz.pF/μW small signal figure of merit and a 55(V/μs) pF/μW large signal figure of merit.

Rapid shallow landslides are a significant hillslope erosion mechanism and limited understanding of their initiation and development results in persistent risk to infrastructure. Here, we analyse the slope above the strategic A83 Rest and be Thankful road in the west of Scotland. An inventory of 70 landslides (2003–2020) shows three types of shallow landslide, debris flows, creep deformation, and debris falls. Debris flows dominate and account for 5,350 m3 (98%) of shallow-landslide source volume across the site. We use novel time-lapse vector tracking to detect and quantify slope instabilities, whilst seismometers demonstrate the potential for live detection and location of debris flows. Using on-slope rainfall data, we show that shallow-landslides are typically triggered by abrupt changes in the rainfall trend, characterised by high-intensity, long duration rainstorms, sometimes part of larger seasonal rainfall changes. We derive empirical antecedent precipitation (>62 mm) and intensity-duration (>10 h) thresholds over which shallow-landslides occur. Analysis shows the new thresholds are more effective at raising hazard alerts than the current management plan. The low-cost sensors provide vital notification of increasing hazard, the initiation of movement, and final failure. This approach offers considerable advances to support operational decision-making for infrastructure threatened by complex slope hazards.

BackgroundRecently it has been proposed a new approach to estimate aortic systolic blood pressure (aoSBP) without the need for specific devices, operator-dependent techniques and/or complex wave propagation models/algorithms. The approach proposes aoSBP can be quantified from brachial diastolic and mean blood pressure (bDBP, bMBP) as: aoSBP = bMBP2/bDBP. It remains to be assessed to what extent the method and/or equation used to obtain the bMBP levels considered in aoSBP calculation may affect the estimated aoSBP, and consequently the agreement with aoSBP invasively recorded.MethodsBrachial and aortic pressure were simultaneously obtained invasively (catheterization) and non-invasively (brachial oscillometry) in 89 subjects. aoSBP was quantified in seven different ways, using measured (oscillometry-derived) and calculated (six equations) mean blood pressure (MBP) levels. Summary: Background: Arterial stiffening is central to the vascular ageing process and a powerful predictor and cause of diverse vascular pathologies and mortality. We investigated age and sex trajectories, regional differences, and global reference values of arterial stiffness as assessed by pulse wave velocity (PWV). Methods: Measurements of brachial-ankle or carotid-femoral PWV (baPWV or cfPWV) in generally healthy participants published in three electronic databases between database inception and August 24th, 2020 were included, either as individual participant-level or summary data received from collaborators (n = 248,196) or by extraction from published reports (n = 274,629). Quality was appraised using the Joanna Briggs Instrument. Variation in PWV was estimated using mixed-effects meta-regression and Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape. Findings: The search yielded 8920 studies, and 167 studies with 509,743 participants from 34 countries were included. PWV depended on age, sex, and country. Global age-standardised means were 12.5 m/s (95% confidence interval: 12.1–12.8 m/s) for baPWV and 7.45 m/s (95% CI: 7.11–7.79 m/s) for cfPWV. Males had higher global levels than females of 0.77 m/s for baPWV (95% CI: 0.75–0.78 m/s) and 0.35 m/s for cfPWV (95% CI: 0.33–0.37 m/s), but sex differences in baPWV diminished with advancing age. The following article highlights the need for methodological transparency and consensus for an accurate and non-invasive assessment of central aortic blood pressure (aoBP), which would contribute to increasing its validity and value in both clinical and physiological research settings. The recording method and site, the mathematical model used to quantify aoBP, and mainly the method applied to calibrate pulse waveforms are essential when estimating aoBP and should be considered when analyzing and/or comparing data from different works, populations and/or obtained with different approaches. Up to now, many questions remain concerning the incremental predictive ability of aoBP over peripheral blood pressure and the possible role of aoBP-guided therapy in everyday practice. In this article, we focus on “putting it on the table” and discussing the main aspects analyzed in the literature as potential determinants of the lack of consensus on the non-invasive measurement of aoBP.

Objetivo: Determinar la distribución morfológica de las Clases II según su naturaleza esqueletal en una muestra de población adulta de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Chile. Materiales y métodos: La muestra experimental estuvo compuesta por 220 telerradiografías laterales de cráneo de individuos mayores de 18 años con ángulos ANB mayores a 4°. Para asignar la naturaleza esqueletal se midieron los ángulos SNA y SNB. Resultados: Se obtuvo que la naturaleza esqueletal más frecuente fue la mandibular seguido por la maxilar. Además, se obtuvieron tres nuevas naturalezas esqueletales las cuales, según el análisis de la literatura pertinente, no habían sido descritas explícitamente con anterioridad (bi-protruida, bi-retruida y en norma). Conclusiones: La naturaleza esqueletal de las maloclusiones Clase II más frecuente en nuestro estudio fue la naturaleza mandibular. Las variantes bi-retruida y bi-protruida deberían ser incorporadas en el diagnóstico esqueletal, especialmente la variante bi-retruida, debido a su significativa alta frecuencia y relevancia clínica.

BackgroundIncreased wave reflections assessed by pulse wave analysis (PWA) was proposed as one of the potential culprits of hypertension seen in women with pregnancy-associated hypertension (PAH). However, this statement has never been confirmed with “Wave Separation Analysis” (WSA), a more sophisticated mathematical approach that analyzes the amplitude and interaction between forward and backward aortic pressure waveform components.ObjectiveTo characterize potential changes in pressure wave components of PAH compared to healthy non-pregnant (NP) women and women with normal pregnancies (HP) by using WSA and compared these findings with PWA-derived indexes; secondarily, to evaluate differences in WSA-derived indexes between subgroups of PAH (i.e., preeclampsia [PE] and gestational hypertension [GH]).MethodsUsing radial and carotid applanation tonometry, we quantified in HP (n = 10), PAH (n = 16), and NP (n = 401): (i) PWA-derived indexes; (ii) WSA-derived indexes: forward (Pf) and backward (Pb) waveform components, backward component arrival time (PbAT), reflection magnitude (RM = Pb/Pf) and index [RIx = Pb/(Pf + Pb)].ResultsWhile PAH was associated with a higher Pf compared to HP and NP, Pb and PbAT were similar between the groups. Both GH and PE showed a higher Pf compared to HP, but only PE had a trend of presenting with higher Pb and lower PbAT compared to the other groups. Finally, PAH showed a trend of having lower RM and RIx compared to NP and HP, with no differences between GH and PE.ConclusionPAH was associated with higher Pf, but not higher Pb, compared to NP and HP, although PE also demonstrated a trend of higher Pb.

BackgroundChildren with cancer are at risk of critical disease and mortality from COVID-19 infection. In this study, we describe the clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with cancer and COVID-19 from multiple Latin American centers and risk factors associated with mortality in this population.MethodsThis study is a multicenter, prospective cohort study conducted at 12 hospitals from 6 Latin American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras and Peru) from April to November 2021. Patients younger than 14 years of age that had an oncological diagnosis and COVID-19 or multisystemic inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) who were treated in the inpatient setting were included. The primary exposure was the diagnosis and treatment status, and the primary outcome was mortality. We defined “new diagnosis” as patients with no previous diagnosis of cancer, “established diagnosis” as patients with cancer and ongoing treatment and “relapse” as patients with cancer and ongoing treatment that had a prior cancer-free period. A frequentist analysis was performed including a multivariate logistic regression for mortality.ResultsTwo hundred and ten patients were included in the study; 30 (14%) died during the study period and 67% of patients who died were admitted to critical care. A fully differential Miller op-amp with a composite input stage using resistive local common-mode feedback and regulated cascode transistors is presented here. High gain pseudo-differential auxiliary amplifiers are used to implement the regulated cascode transistors in order to boost the output impedance of the composite input stage and the open-loop gain of the op-amp. Both input and output stages operate in class AB mode. The proposed op-amp has been simulated in a 130nm commercial CMOS process technology. It operates from a 1.2V supply and has a close to rail-to-rail differential output swing. It has 156dB DC open-loop gain and 63MHz gain-bandwidth product with a 30pF capacitive load. The op-amp has a DC open-loop gain figure of merit $FOM_{AOLDC}$ of 174 (MV/V) MHz pF/ $\mu \text{W}$ and large-signal figure of merit $FOM_{LS} $ of 3(V/ $\mu \text{s}$ ) pF/ $\mu \text{W}$ .

A compact power-efficient class-AB Miller op-amp is introduced. It uses a simple auxiliary circuit that enhances the op-amp’s gain-bandwidth product and helps to drive a wide range of capacitive and resistive loads with high static and dynamic current efficiency. Simple Miller compensation is used to obtain stability over a wide range of loading conditions. The op-amp’s simulation and experimental results in strong inversion with $15\mu \text{A}$ bias current and in sub-threshold with 250nA bias current are shown. Its performance is measured in terms of dynamic and static current efficiency figures of merit FOMCEDyn and FOMCEStat. and using the conventional small-signal figure of merit FOMSS. Experimental results of op-amps fabricated in a 130nm CMOS technology are shown that validate the proposed approach.

Summary: CRISPR-Cas systems have been used to induce DNA mutagenesis for gene function discovery. However, the development of tools to eliminate RNAs provides complementary and unique approaches to disrupt gene expression. Here, we present a workflow to perform specific, efficient, and cost-effective mRNA knockdown in zebrafish embryos using our in vivo optimized CRISPR-RfxCas13d (CasRx) system. Although the described protocol focuses on mRNA knockdown in zebrafish embryos, it can also be applied to other vertebrates.For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Kushawah et al. A comparative study of one-stage-amp performance improvement based on simulations in 22 nm, 45 nm, 90 nm, and 180 nm in deep submicrometer CMOS technologies is discussed. Generic SPICE models were used to simulate the circuits. It is shown that in all cases a simple modification using resistive local common mode feedback increases open-loop gain and gain-bandwidth product, peak output currents, and slew rate by close to an order of magnitude. It is shown that this modification is especially appropriate for its utilization in current CMOS technologies since large factor improvements were not available in previous technologies. The OTAs with resistive local common mode feedback require simple phase lead compensation with a very small additional silicon area and keep supply requirements and static power dissipation unchanged.

We used low-cost Raspberry Pi ultraviolet (UV) cameras to measure sulphur dioxide (SO2) fluxes from Sabancaya volcano, Peru, during eruptive activity on 27 April 2018. Light dilution corrections were made by operating instruments at two distances simultaneously. Estimated SO2 fluxes of 27.1 kgs-1 are higher than previously reported, likely due to the current eruptive episode (ongoing since November 2016). Each eruptive event included frequent (2–3 per minute), ash-rich emissions, forming gas pulses with masses of 3.0–8.2 tonnes SO2. Sustained degassing and lack of overpressure suggest open-vent activity. Mean fluxes are consistent with those measured by a permanent NOVAC station (25.9 kgs-1) located under the plume, with remaining differences likely due to windspeed estimates and sampling rate. Our work highlights the importance of accurate light dilution and windspeed modelling in SO2 retrievals and suggests that co-location of UV cameras with permanent scanning spectrometers may be valuable in providing accurate windspeeds.

Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) causes respiratory tract infections and neurologic manifestations. We compared the clinical manifestations from 2 EV-D68 outbreaks in 2014 and 2018 and a low-activity period in 2016 among hospitalized children in central Ohio, USA, and used PCR and sequencing to enable phylogenetic comparisons. During both outbreak periods, infected children had respiratory manifestations that led to an increase in hospital admissions for asthma. The 2018 EV-D68 outbreak appeared to be milder in terms of respiratory illness, as shown by lower rates of pediatric intensive care unit admission. However, the frequency of severe neurologic manifestations was higher in 2018 than in 2014. During the same period in 2016, we noted neither an increase in EV-D68 nor a significant increase in asthma-related admissions. Phylogenetic analyses showed that EV-D68 isolates from 2018 clustered differently within clade B than did isolates from 2014 and are perhaps associated with a different EV-D68 subclade.

Background: There are scarce and controversial data on whether human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is associated with changes in aortic pressure (aoBP) and waveform-derived indexes. Moreover, it remains unknown whether potential differences in aoBP and waveform indexes between people living with HIV (PLWHIV) and subjects without HIV (HIV-) would be affected by the calibration method of the pressure waveform.Aims: To determine: (i) whether PLWHIV present differences in aoBP and waveform-derived indexes compared to HIV- subjects; (ii) the relative impact of both HIV infection and cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) on aoBP and waveform-derived indexes; (iii) whether the results of the first and second aims are affected by the calibration method.Methods: Three groups were included: (i) PLWHIV (n = 86), (ii) HIV- subjects (general population; n = 1,000) and (iii) a Reference Group (healthy, non-exposed to CRFs; n = 398). Haemodynamic parameters, brachial pressure (baBP; systolic: baSBP; diastolic: baDBP; mean oscillometric: baMBPosc) and aoBP and waveform-derived indexes were obtained. Brachial mean calculated (baMBPcalc=baDBP+[baSBP-baDBP]/3) pressure was quantified. Three waveform calibration schemes were used: systolic-diastolic, calculated (baMBPcalc/baDBP) and oscillometric mean (baMBPosc/baDBP).Results: Regardless of CRFs and baBP, PLWHIV presented a tendency of having lower aoBP and waveform-derived indexes which clearly reached statistical significance when using the baMBPosc/baDBP or baMBPcalc/baDBP calibration. HIV status exceeded the relative weight of other CRFs as explanatory variables, being the main explanatory variable for variations in central hemodynamics when using the baMBPosc/baDBP, followed by the baMBPcalc/baDBP calibration.Conclusions: The peripheral waveform calibration approach is an important determinant to reveal differences in central hemodynamics in PLWHIV.

Background: Non-pregnant (NP) women have a progressive increase in arterial stiffness from central-to-peripheral arteries [“stiffness gradient” (SG)], which is of physiologic importance since excessive pulsatility is filtered by the creation of wave reflections. If the aorta gets stiff with minimal or no change in the periphery, the SG is dissipated transmitting pressure disturbances to the microcirculation. It remains unknown the status of the SG in both women with healthy pregnancies (HP) and complicated by pregnancy-associated hypertension (PAH).Objective: To determine whether HP and PAH are associated with changes in SG. Secondarily, we aim at identifying potential differences between the subgroups of PAH (pre-eclampsia and gestational hypertension).Methods: HP (n = 10), PAH (n = 16), and healthy NP women (n = 401, to be matched for age, and cardiovascular risk with the pregnant women) were included. Carotid-to-femoral (cfPWV) and carotid-to-radial pulse wave velocity (crPWV), common carotid artery (CCA) and brachial artery (BA) diameters and elastic modulus (EM), and regional (cfPWV/crPWV or “PWV ratio”) and local (CCA EM/BA EM or “EM ratio”) SG were quantified.Results: HP showed no changes in PWV ratio compared with NP, in the presence of significantly lower cfPWV and crPWV. HP exhibited higher arterial diameters and lower CCA EM/BA EM compared to NP, without differences with PAH. PAH was associated with a significant increase in the PWV ratio that exceeded the levels of both NP and HP, explained by a lower (although significant) reduction of cfPWV with respect to that observed in HP with respect to NP, and a higher reduction in crPWV with respect to that observed between HP and NP. The blunted reduction in cfPWV observed in PAH coincided with an increase in the CCA EM.Conclusions: Compared with NP, HP was associated with unchanged PWV ratio but with a reduction in CCA EM/BA EM, in the setting of a generalized drop in arterial stiffness. Compared with NP and HP, PAH was associated with an “exaggerated rise” in the PWV ratio without changes in CCA EM/BA EM, in the setting of a blunt reduction in cfPWV but exaggerated crPWV drop. The SG attenuation/reversal in PAH was mainly driven by pre-eclampsia.

Osteomyelitis is a rare clinical manifestation of infection with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). We report an adolescent with femoral osteomyelitis associated with prosthetic material due to an emerging pathogen, Mycobacterium goodii. Application of secA1 and 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing reliably determined the NTM species, enabling targeted antimicrobial therapy.

There is currently no vaccine against American trypanosomiasis, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. This is due to the genomic variation observed in the six DTUs of T. cruzi. This work aims to propose a consensus sequence of the enolase protein from different strains of T. cruzi and mainly evaluate its immunogenic properties at the bioinformatic level. From specialized databases, 15 sequences of the enolase gene were aligned to obtain a consensus sequence, where this sequence was modeled and then evaluated and validated through different bioinformatic programs to learn their immunogenic potential. Finally, chimeric peptides were designed with the most representative epitopes. The results showed high immunogenic potential with six epitopes for MHC-I, and seven epitopes for MHC-II, all of which were highly representative of the enolase present in strains from the American continent as well as five epitopes for B cells. Regarding the computational modeling, molecular docking with Toll-like receptors showed a high affinity and low constant of dissociation, which could lead to an innate-type immune response that helps to eliminate the parasite. In conclusion, the consensus sequence proposed for enolase is capable of providing an ideal immune response; however, the experimental evaluation of this enolase consensus and their chimeric peptides should be a high priority to develop a vaccine against Chagas disease.

Interleukin (IL)-1 family cytokines initiate inflammatory responses, and shape innate and adaptive immunity. They play important roles in host defense, but excessive immune activation can also lead to the development of chronic inflammatory diseases. Dysregulated IL-1 family signaling is observed in a variety of skin disorders. In particular, IL-1 family cytokines have been linked to the pathogenesis of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. The biological activity of pro-inflammatory IL-1 family agonists is controlled by the natural receptor antagonists IL-1Ra and IL-36Ra, as well as by the regulatory cytokines IL-37 and IL-38. These four anti-inflammatory IL-1 family members are constitutively and highly expressed at steady state in the epidermis, where keratinocytes are a major producing cell type. In this review, we provide an overview of the current knowledge concerning their regulatory roles in skin biology and inflammation and their therapeutic potential in human inflammatory skin diseases. We further highlight some common misunderstandings and less well-known observations, which persist in the field despite recent extensive interest for these cytokines.

A highly power-efficient, fully differential Miller op-amp with accurately controlled output quiescent current is introduced. The op-amp can drive both capacitive and resistive load due to the presence of the auxiliary amplifier. This amplifier helps to achieve class AB operation of the proposed op-amp. The fully differential auxiliary amplifier is compact and uses a resistive local common-mode feedback network. It consumes only 6% of the total current of the op-amp. The proposed op-amp has several innovative features. Incorporating the auxiliary amplifier helps to improve the unity gain frequency, power efficiency, slew-rate, and common-mode rejection ratio of the proposed op-amp. It can drive a wide range of resistive (200 Ω–1 MΩ) and capacitive loads (5 pF–300 pF). The op-amp has a large signal dynamic current efficiency of 8.6 and a large signal static current efficiency of 7.9. The small-signal figure of merit is 8.7 for RL = 1 MΩ and 7.3 for RL = 200 Ω.

The injection of gas and pyroclastic material from volcanic vents into the atmosphere is a prolific source of acoustic waves. Infrasound arrays offer efficient, cost-effective, and near real-time solutions to track the rate and intensity of surface activity at volcanoes. Here, we present a simple framework for the analysis of acoustic array data, based on least-squares beamforming, that allows to evaluate the direction and speed of propagation of acoustic waves between source and array. The algorithms include a new and computationally efficient approach for quantitative assessment of the uncertainty on array measurements based on error propagation theory. We apply the algorithms to new data collected by two 6-element infrasound arrays deployed at Mt. Etna during the period July–August 2019. Our results demonstrate that the use of two infrasound arrays allowed detecting and tracking acoustic sources from multiple craters and active vents associated with degassing and ash-rich explosions, vigorous and frequent Strombolian activity, opening of new eruptive fractures and emplacement of lava flows. Finally, we discuss the potential use of metrics based on infrasound array analyses to inform eruption monitoring operations and early warning at volcanoes characterized by episodic intensification of activity.

In times of crisis, citizens’ support for democracy can depend on how well they think their democracy can address that crisis compared to authoritarian alternatives. Mexico is in the midst of just such a crisis, as its war on drug trafficking organisations has brought an unprecedented rise in violence and, in some areas, posed a direct challenge to the state’s capacity to govern. At the same time, its subnational political landscape ranges from vibrant, multi-party states to those with continued connections to a dominant one-party past. We leverage these variations in subnational political context and levels of drug-related violence to examine how the subnational political context mediates the relationship between a crisis and support for non-democratic alternatives. When faced with a violent shock to the system, public attitudes towards democracy depend in part on one’s experiences with non-democratic alternatives and whether these authoritarian options appear to solve the crisis at hand more effectively.

Infrasound is an increasingly popular tool for volcano monitoring, providing insights of the unrest by detecting and characterizing acoustic waves produced by volcanic processes, such as explosions, degassing, rockfalls, and lahars. Efficient event detection from large infrasound databases gathered in volcanic settings relies on the availability of robust and automated workflows. While numerous triggering algorithms for event detection have been proposed in the past, they mostly focus on applications to seismological data. Analyses of acoustic infrasound for signal detection is often performed manually or by application of the traditional short-term average/long-term average (STA/LTA) algorithms, which have shown limitations when applied in volcanic environments, or more generally to signals with poor signal-to-noise ratios. Here, we present a new algorithm specifically designed for automated detection of volcanic explosions from acoustic infrasound data streams. The algorithm is based on the characterization of the shape of the explosion signals, their duration, and frequency content. The algorithm combines noise reduction techniques with automatic feature extraction in order to allow confident detection of signals affected by non-stationary noise. We have benchmarked the performances of the new detector by comparison with both the STA/LTA algorithm and human analysts, with encouraging results. In this manuscript, we present our algorithm and make its software implementation available to other potential users. This algorithm has potential to either be implemented in near real-time monitoring workflows or to catalog pre-existing databases.

An approach to implement single-ended power-efficient static class-AB Miller op-amps with symmetrical and significantly enhanced slew-rate and accurately controlled output quiescent current is introduced. The proposed op-amp can drive a wide range of resistive and capacitive loads. The output positive and negative currents can be much higher than the total op-amp quiescent current. The enhanced performance is achieved by utilizing a simple low-power auxiliary amplifier with resistive local common-mode feedback that increases the quiescent power dissipation by less than 10%. The proposed class AB op-amp is characterized by significantly enhanced large-signal dynamic, static current efficiency, and small-signal figures of merits. The dynamic current efficiency is 15.6 higher, the static current efficiency is 10.6 times higher, and the small-signal figure of merit is 2.3 times higher than the conventional class-A op-amp. A global figure of merit that determines an op-amp’s ultimate speed is 6.33 times higher than the conventional class A op-amp.

Background: Chagas disease is considered a neglected tropical disease. The acute phase of Chagas disease is characterized by several symptoms: fever, fatigue, body aches, headache and cardiopathy’s. Chronic phase could be asymptomatic or symptomatic with cardiac compromise. Since the emergence of the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the cardiovascular involvement has been identified as a complication commonly reported in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Due to the lack of knowledge of the cardiac affectations that this virus could cause in patients with Chagas disease, the aim of this review is to describe the possible cardiac affectations, as well as the treatment and recommendations that patients with both infections should carry out. Methods: The authors revised the recent and relevant literature concerning the topic and discussed advances and limitations of studies on COVID-19 and their impact in Chagas disease patients, principally with cardiac affectations. Results: There currently exists little information about the consequences that Chagas disease patients can suffer when they are infected with COVID-19. Conclusions: This review highlights the emerging challenges of access to medical care and future research needs in order to understand the implications that co-infections (SARS-CoV-2 or other viruses) can generate in Chagas disease-infected people.

Background. Hypertriglyceridemia and hyperglycemia coexist in 30-60% of patients with diabetes. The impact of hypertriglyceridemia regarding HbA1c assay reliability remains uncertain. Therefore, we conducted a prospective in vivo controlled study with the aim of defining the association between triglyceride levels and HbA1c. Methods. A total of 44 patients with an index-hospital admission diagnosis of diabetic ketoacidosis or hypertriglyceridemia-induced pancreatitis, as a model for acute elevation of triglycerides, were recruited. Blood samples were drawn for the measurement of HbA1c, triglycerides, glucose, and hemoglobin at baseline and subsequently 24 and 48 hours after admission. HbA1c analysis was performed with high-performance liquid chromatography Bio-Rad D10 (NGSP approved). Results. All patients completed the study protocol. A difference between mean triglycerides from day 0 (baseline) to day 2 of 1567.2 mg/dL was observed. We found a difference between mean serum HbA1c from days 0 to 2 of 0.09% [1 mmol/mol] (p=0.004). Moreover, a weak correlation between the mean difference of HbA1c and triglycerides from baseline to day 2 was found to be statistically significant (r=0.256, p=0.015). None of these findings, however, are clinically significant. Conclusion. Triglycerides do not impair the interpretation of HbA1c assay. Patients and clinicians can now be confident that hypertriglyceridemia is not an important factor when interpreting HbA1c results.

Identifying precursor events that allow the timely forecasting of landslides, thereby enabling risk reduction, is inherently difficult. Here we present a novel, low cost, flow visualization technique using time-lapsed imagery (TLI) that allows real time analysis of slope movement. This approach is applied to the Rest and Be Thankful slope, Argyle, Scotland, where past debris flows have blocked the A83 or forced preemptive closure. TLI of the Rest and Be Thankful are taken from a fixed station, 28 mm lens, time lapse camera every 15 min. Imagery is filtered to counter the effects of misalignment from wind induced vibration of the camera, asymmetric lighting, and fog. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) algorithms are then run to produce slope movement velocity vectors. PIV generated vectors are automatically post-processed to separate vectors generated by slope movement from false positives generated by harsh environmental conditions. Results for images over a 20-day period indicated precursor slope movement initiated by a rainfall event, a period of quiescence for 10 days, followed by a large landslide failure during proceeding rainfall where over 3000 tons of sediment reached the road. Results suggest low cost, live streamed TLI and this novel PIV approach correctly detect and, importantly, report precursor slope movement, allowing early warning, effective management and landslide impact mitigation. Future applications of this technique will allow the development of an effective decision-making tool for asset management of the A83, reducing the risk to life of motorists. The technique can also be applied to other critical infrastructure sites, allowing hazard risk reduction.

A simple scheme to implement class AB low-voltage fully differential amplifiers that do not require an output common-mode feedback network (CMFN) is introduced. It has a rail to rail output signal swing and high rejection of common-mode input signals. It operates in strong inversion with ±300 mV supplies in a 180 nm CMOS process. It uses an auxiliary amplifier that minimizes supply requirements by setting the op-amp input terminals very close to one of the rails and also serves as a common-mode feedback network to generate complementary output signals. The scheme is verified with simulation results of an amplifier that consumes 25 µW, has a gain-bandwidth product (GBW) of 16.1 MHz, slew rate (SR) of 8.4 V/µs, the small signal figure of merit (FOMSS) of 6.49 MHz*pF/µW, the large signal figure of merit (FOMLS) of 3.39 V/µs*pF/µW, and current efficiency (CE) of 2.03 in strong inversion, with a 10 pF load capacitance.

Reference intervals (RIs) of carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) from large healthy population are still lacking in Latin America. The aim of this study was to determine CIMT RIs in a cohort of 1012 healthy subjects from Argentina. We evaluated if RIs for males and females and for left and right carotids were necessary. Second, mean and standard deviation (SD) age-related equations were obtained for left, right, and average (left + right)/2) CIMT using parametric regression methods based on fractional polynomials, in order to obtain age-specific percentiles curves. Age-specific percentile curves were obtained. Males showed higher A-CIMT (0.577±0.003 mm versus 0.566±0.004 mm, P=0.039) in comparison with females. For males, the equations were as follows: A-CIMT mean = 0.42 + 8.14×10-5⁎Age2; A-CIMT SD = 5.9 × 10−2 + 1.09×10-5⁎Age2. For females, they were as follows: A-CIMT mean = 0.40 + 8.20×10-5⁎Age2; A-CIMT SD = 4.67 × 10−2 + 1.63×10-5⁎Age2. Our study provides the largest database concerning RIs of CIMT in healthy people in Argentina. Specific RIs and percentiles of CIMT for children, adolescents, and adults are now available according to age and gender, for right and left common carotid arteries.

Age-related reference intervals (RIs) of central (aortic) systolic blood pressure (cSBP) and augmentation index (cAIx) obtained from large healthy population are lacking in Argentina (South America). Aims. To analyze the existence of associations among cSBP and cAIx with demographic, anthropometric, and hemodynamic parameters and to generate percentile curves and RIs adjusted to each level of age and gender and/or body height. cSBP and cAIx were measured in 1038 healthy children, adolescents, and young adults. First, we evaluated if RIs for males and females were necessary using correlation and covariate analysis. Second, mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) age-related equations were obtained for cSBP and cAIx, using parametric regression methods based on fractional polynomials. Third, age specific percentiles curves were generated. Fourth, body height specific percentiles curves were generated using a similar procedure. The obtained equations (considering age as independent variable) for all subjects (cSBP0.26 and (cAIx + 12.001)0.5) were as follows: cSBP Mean = 3.0581 + 0.2189 log(Age) − 0.001044Age; cSBP SD = −0.03919 + 0.1535 log(Age) − 0.004564Age; cAIx mean = 9.5226 − 6.1599 log(Age) + 0.1450Age; cAIx SD = 1.3880 − 0.8468 log(Age) + 0.03212Age. This study, performed in Argentinean healthy children, adolescents, and young adults with ages of 5 to 22 years, provides the first RIs and percentile curves of cSBP and cAIx. Additionally, specific body height-related cAIx percentiles are reported for the analyzed population. The RIs and percentiles contribute to the knowledge of arterial dynamic evolution along the normal aging process and the interpretation of data obtained in clinical research and daily clinical practice.

Volcanic ash is a well-known hazard to population, infrastructure, and commercial and civil aviation. Early assessment of the parameters that control the development and evolution of volcanic plumes is crucial to effective risk mitigation. Acoustic infrasound is a ground-based remote sensing technique—increasingly popular in the past two decades—that allows rapid estimates of eruption source parameters, including fluid flow velocities and volume flow rates of erupted material. The rate at which material is ejected from volcanic vents during eruptions, is one of the main inputs into models of atmospheric ash transport used to dispatch aviation warnings during eruptive crises. During explosive activity at volcanoes, the injection of hot gas-laden pyroclasts into the atmosphere generates acoustic waves that are recorded at local, regional and global scale. Within the framework of linear acoustic theory, infrasound sources can be modelled as multipole series, and acoustic pressure waveforms can be inverted to obtain the time history of volume flow at the vent. Standard quadcopters are popular largely because of their mechanical simplicity relative to other hovering aircraft, low cost and minimum operator involvement. However, this simplicity imposes fundamental limits on the types of maneuvers possible due to its under-actuation. The dexterity and fault tolerance required for flying in limited spaces like forests and industrial infrastructures dictate the use of a bespoke dual-tilting quadcopter that can launch vertically, performs autonomous flight between adjacent obstacles and is even capable of flying in the event of the failure of one or two motors. This paper proposes an actuation concept to enhance the performance characteristics of the conventional under-actuated quadcopter. The practical formation of this concept is followed by the design, modeling, simulation and prototyping of a dual-axis tilting quadcopter. Outdoor flight tests using tilting rotors, to follow a trajectory containing adjacent obstacles, were conducted in order to compare the flight of conventional quadcopter with the proposed over-actuated vehicle. The results show that the quadcopter with tilting rotors provides more agility and mobility to the vehicle especially in narrow indoor and outdoor infrastructures.

BackgroundHeart failure places a significant burden on patients and health systems in high-income countries. However, information about its burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is scant. We thus set out to review both published and unpublished information on the presentation, causes, management, and outcomes of heart failure in LMICs.Methods and findingsMedline, Embase, Global Health Database, and World Health Organization regional databases were searched for studies from LMICs published between 1 January 1995 and 30 March 2014. Additional unpublished data were requested from investigators and international heart failure experts. We identified 42 studies that provided relevant information on acute hospital care (25 LMICs; 232,550 patients) and 11 studies on the management of chronic heart failure in primary care or outpatient settings (14 LMICs; 5,358 patients). The mean age of patients studied ranged from 42 y in Cameroon and Ghana to 75 y in Argentina, and mean age in studies largely correlated with the human development index of the country in which they were conducted (r = 0.71, pConclusionsThe presentation, underlying causes, management, and outcomes of heart failure vary substantially across LMICs. On average, the use of evidence-based medications tends to be suboptimal. Better strategies for heart failure surveillance and management in LMICs are needed. The experimental results of the Fowler-Nordheim characterization using poly1-poly2 capacitors on CMOS ON Semi 0.5 μm technology are presented. This characterization allows the development, design, and characterization of a new current-mode analog nonvolatile memory. Experimental results of the memory cell architecture are presented and demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed architecture.

A new tool for the solution of nonlinear differential equations is presented. The Fixed-Term Homotopy (FTH) delivers a high precision representation of the nonlinear differential equation using only a few linear algebraic terms. In addition to this tool, a procedure based on Laplace-Padé to deal with the truncate power series resulting from the FTH method is also proposed. In order to assess the benefits of this proposal, two nonlinear problems are solved and compared against other semianalytic methods. The obtained results show that FTH is a power tool capable of generating highly accurate solutions compared with other methods of literature.

The Algebraic lambda-calculus and the Linear-Algebraic lambda-calculus extend the lambda-calculus with the possibility of making arbitrary linear combinations of terms. In this paper we provide a fine-grained, System F-like type system for the linear-algebraic lambda-calculus. We show that this "scalar" type system enjoys both the subject-reduction property and the strong-normalisation property, our main technical results. The latter yields a significant simplification of the linear-algebraic lambda-calculus itself, by removing the need for some restrictions in its reduction rules. But the more important, original feature of this scalar type system is that it keeps track of 'the amount of a type' that is present in each term. As an example of its use, we shown that it can serve as a guarantee that the normal form of a term is barycentric, i.e that its scalars are summing to one.

The fact that most of the physical phenomena are modelled by nonlinear differential equations underlines the importance of having reliable methods for solving them. This work presents the rational biparameter homotopy perturbation method (RBHPM) as a novel tool with the potential to find approximate solutions for nonlinear differential equations. The method generates the solutions in the form of a quotient of two power series of different homotopy parameters. Besides, in order to improve accuracy, we propose the Laplace-Padé rational biparameter homotopy perturbation method (LPRBHPM), when the solution is expressed as the quotient of two truncated power series. The usage of the method is illustrated with two case studies. On one side, a Ricatti nonlinear differential equation is solved and a comparison with the homotopy perturbation method (HPM) is presented. On the other side, a nonforced Van der Pol Oscillator is analysed and we compare results obtained with RBHPM, LPRBHPM, and HPM in order to conclude that the LPRBHPM and RBHPM methods generate the most accurate approximated solutions.
