He mentions that he appointed several topical senior editors to assist with the operation of the journal. He also presented the names of the newly appointed editors, along with their affiliation.

The winner of the 2020 TPS Best Paper Award has been selected (please refer to our TPS home page for details about the award at https://ieee-npss.org/publications/transactions-on-plasma-science/). This year is the second year that the award is being given, and I am pleased to announce that Prof. Chandrashekhar Joshi, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California at Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA, USA, is the winner for his article “Laser-driven plasma accelerators operating in the self- guided, blowout regime.” This article appeared in IEEE TPS, vol. 45, pp. 3134–3146, in December 2017. The award plaque, certificate, and cheque will be presented to Prof. Joshi at an upcoming International Conference on Plasma Science in South Lake Tahoe, CA, USA, in June 2021. The combined IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) (held annually) and Pulsed Power Conference (held biennially) are merged once every six years, sponsored by the Plasma Science and Applications Committee (PSAC) and the Pulsed Power Science and Technology Committee (PPS&T) of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science Society (NPSS). The joint conference, called the Pulsed Power and Plasma Science Conference, was held on June 23–28, 2019, in Orlando, FL, USA. The conference’s technical program included a wide range of topics, which ranged from fundamental research to traditional and emerging technology applications. The conference had over 800 accepted abstracts, representing scientists from over 30 countries. The program also included a minicourse on “Computational Methods in Plasma Physics.” This year the PPPS sessions were enhanced by a number of exceptional plenary talks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This year is the first year that the award is being given, and I am pleased to announce that Prof. Noah Hirshkowitz, of the Department of Engineering Physics at the University of Wisconsin (UW), Madison, WI, USA, is the winner for his paper, “43 years of Fun Basic Plasma Physics Experiments,” published in the Transactions in 2016 (vol. 44, no. 4, pp. 347–363). The IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) is held annually, sponsored by the Plasma Science and Applications Committee (PSAC) of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science Society (NPSS). The 45th IEEE NPSS ICOPS was held on June 24–28, 2018, in Denver, CO, USA. The conference's technical program included a wide range of topics, which ranged from basic and fundamental research to traditional and emerging technology applications. Over 530 accepted abstracts, representing scientists from over 30 countries. The program also included a minicourse on “New Directions in Plasma Diagnostics for High Energy Density and Burning Plasmas.” This year, the ICOPS sessions were enhanced by several exceptional plenary talks and two IEEE Birdsall award talks. John Cary from the University of Colorado (the 2016 Birdsall Award Winner) gave a talk entitled “The Evolution of Computational Physics,” and Alex Friedman from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (the 2017 Birdsall Award Winner) spoke on “Computer Simulations of Plasmas and Beams: A View From Multiple Angles.” Other plenary talks covered areas that included: particle accelerator technology; challenges of high-energy density physics and inertial fusion; the physics, chemistry, and interactions of plasma with liquids; radiation belt remediation; and electron beams, plasmas, and EM fields and waves. As part of our continuing efforts to upgrade and improve the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science (TPS), a number of changes were made or are taking place. I wanted to update our readers on these developments. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The article announces the publication transition of the periodical from a bimonthly to a monthly publication effective January 2009.

The editorial is intended to serve as an introduction to a new series of Special Issues in the "IEE Transactions of Plasma Science." Beginning with this issue of selected contributed oral papers from the International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) 2003. It was decided that candidates papers for the special issue would be limited to subset of all papers actually presented at ICOPS. nominations from oral contributed papers for the selection process for this Special Issue. The manuscripts represented in this Special Issue are drawn from all the disciplines of plasma science represented at ICOPS.
