In the Garu-Tempane area and Tamne River basin of north-eastern Ghana, granitic aquifers supply nearly 80% of annually abstracted groundwater. Rapid and diffuse recharge enters the fractured and weathered Tamnean Plutonic Suite aquifers mainly granitoid, which are the dominant rock types in the study area. However, a greater challenge to the water supply in the area is posed by global climatic changes and overexploitation due to population growth. The semi-arid nature of the area together with the factors mentioned earlier has caused water scarcity, particularly in the dry season and these have affected the livelihoods of the farmers who depend mostly on the groundwater for irrigation and domestic purposes. A promising way to balance water resources in the region is using engineering technology such as managed aquifer recharge (MAR). MAR augments water levels in water-scarce areas and represents a key tool in water supply management. For this reason, a comprehensive hydrogeological characterization involving the hydrochemistry of the groundwater, groundwater recharge process and residence time using multi-environmental tracers, and a numerical groundwater flow model was developed. Based on the hydrochemistry results, the water quality index showed that the groundwater is very suitable for drinking. However, about 10.5 % out of the 38 groundwater samples had elevated nitrate concentrations exceeding the permissible WHO drinking water limit. These are mainly agricultural areas, which might have influenced the elevated nitrate concentrations. Groundwater age dating using sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) was used to date shallow groundwater in Ghana for the first time. The results proved that the mean residence time of groundwater was around 30 years, an indication of young groundwater and rapid groundwater renewability. The findings also showed different groundwater ages implying diffused flow systems occurring in the fractured granitic aquifer. Investigation of the groundwater recharge using stable isotopes of deuterium and oxygen-18 revealed that the main source of groundwater recharge is of meteoric origin. There were little or no contributions from the stream and ponds as they were subjected to evaporative fractionation during the dry season. The White Volta River samples and samples from two big rivers were depleted in heavy isotopes, which suggested a hydraulic connection between them and the groundwater. The numerical groundwater flow model was used to assess the feasibility of MAR and determine the maximum recharge and abstraction rates. The results showed that the aquifer had enough storage to accommodate enough volumes of floodwater without causing groundwater mounding. This shows that MAR is feasible in augmenting the water levels in the area when irrigation and domestic withdrawals are regulated., Im Nordosten Ghanas liefern Granitgrundwasserleiter fast 80 % des jährlich aufkommenden Grundwassers. Hinzu kommt die charakteristische Trockenheit des Gebiets, die die Wasserknappheit insbesondere in der Trockenzeit immens verstärkt. Dies beeinträchtigt wiederum erheblich die Lebensgrundlage der Bauern, die für Bewässerungs- und Haushaltszwecke hauptsächlich vom Grundwasser abhängig sind. Aus diesem Grund wurde für die ausgewählte Region eine umfassende hydrogeologische Charakterisierung unter Einbeziehung der Hydrochemie des Grundwassers, des Grundwasserneubildungsprozesses und der Verweilzeit unter Verwendung von „Multi-Umwelttracern“ sowie ein numerisches Grundwasserströmungsmodell entwickelt. Basierend auf den Daten der Hydrochemie zeigt der sogenannte Wasserqualitätsindex, dass das Grundwasser sehr gut zum Trinken geeignet ist. Allerdings weisen etwa 10,5 % der Grundwassersproben aus insgesamt 38 Messstellen erhöhte Nitratkonzentrationen auf, die den zulässigen WHO-Trinkwassergrenzwert überschreiten. Die erhöhten Nitratwerte werden hauptsächlich durch Landwirtschaft verursacht. Die Datierung des Grundwasseralters mit Multi Umwelt Tracer (SF6, FCKW) wurde erstmals von flachem Grundwasser in Ghana verwendet. Die Ergebnisse belegen, dass die Durchschnittsverweildauer des Grundwassers bei etwa 30 Jahren liegt. Dies ist ein Hinweis auf junges Grundwasser, d.h. der Grundwasserleiter kann „zügig“ mit Grundwasser angereichert werden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen auch unterschiedliche Grundwasseralter, was auf diffuse Strömungssysteme hindeutet, die im zerklüfteten Granitaquifer vorkommen. Die Untersuchung der Grundwasserneubildung mit stabilen Isotopen von Deuterium und Sauerstoff-18 zeigt, dass die Hauptquelle der Grundwasserneubildung meteorischen Ursprungs ist. Es gab nur geringe oder keine Wassereinträge aus den kleineren Oberflächengewässer da keine Isotopen aus diesen Quellen im Grundwasser nachweisbar waren. Aus den größeren Oberflächengewässern wie dem White Volta River konnten hingegen schweren Isotopen im Grundwasser nachgewiesen werden, was wiederum ein Hinweis auf eine hydraulische Verbindung zwischen ihnen ist. Das numerische Grundwasserströmungsmodell wurde verwendet, um die Machbarkeit von MAR zu bewerten und die maximalen Neubildungs- und Entnahmeraten zu bestimmen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass der Aquifer über genügend Stauraum verfügt, um genügend Hochwassermengen aufzunehmen ohne Grundwasseranhäufungen zu verursachen. MAR ist somit realisierbar, um die Wasserstände in dem Gebiet zu erhöhen, wenn Bewässerung und häusliche Entnahmen reguliert werden.

Wind energy is a growing concern over the present awareness of lethal impact of green house gas emission. This energy source has been proven a promising alternative to fossil fuel based energy. Increased onshore wind capacity and decreased amount of low roughness wind sites has inspired the wind energy researchers to explore the possibilities of wind energy from high roughness sites such as urban area. Moreover, exhausted grid capacity between the wind energy producer from remote area and the consumer at city is also a major constrain for wind energy expansion. Driven by such motivation, this thesis has explored possibilities of wind energy conversion from buildings where energy is needed the most. Urban topography is known to be highly turbulent region considering its roughness characteristics. Wind energy yield from urban aerodynamics is a vast arena of experimental research. Within the time frame of the thesis period and available opportunities, a brief description about the wind energy assessment modelling approach from urban flow was outlined. There are several possibilities of wind energy yield from the built structure, but only building integrated duct was focused in this thesis. Time-averaged and global wind speed on the building integrated ducts, flow around the buildings was measured from wind tunnel and numerical analysis. Available wind energy yield and turbulence present in the locations measured from the flow was calculated based on the wind tunnel data and summarized with the pros and cons of the particular geometry. Elliptical duct configuration was found to achieve maximum energy yield from the omnidirectional free stream flow. However, simple rectangular duct configuration was determined as most efficient and optimized considering its simplicity, financial feasibility and relative energy yield with other duct configuration. The thesis also showed that on roof configuration is also very promising for wind energy exploration from the omnidirectional free stream flow. Necessary recommendations were made based on available result for future development of the research approach. Scope and opportunities was mentioned. This investigation has proved that it is possible to extract limited amount of wind energy from building augmented ducts using concentrator effect of the building exterior. Thus, the thesis concluded that the wind energy yield from building augmented ducts using the concentrator effect of the building exterior is a promising renewable energy source., Windenergie gibt angesichts des gegenwärtigen Bewusstseins für die tödlichen Auswirkungen von Treibhausgasemissionen zunehmend Anlass zur Sorge. Die erhöhte Onshore-Windkapazität und die verringerte Anzahl von Windstandorten mit geringer Rauheit haben die Windenergieforscher dazu inspiriert, die Möglichkeiten der Windenergie von Standorten mit hoher Rauheit, wie z. B. städtischen Gebieten, zu untersuchen. Darüber hinaus ist auch die erschöpfte Netzkapazität zwischen dem Windenergieerzeuger in abgelegenen Gebieten und dem Verbraucher in der Stadt ein großes Hindernis für den Ausbau der Windenergie. Angetrieben von einer solchen Motivation hat diese Arbeit Möglichkeiten der Windenergieumwandlung von Gebäuden untersucht, in denen die Energie am meisten benötigt wird. Die städtische Topographie ist aufgrund ihrer Rauheitseigenschaften als hochturbulente Region bekannt. Darüber hinaus erfordert die Komplexität des städtischen Gebiets aufgrund seiner unterschiedlichen Topographie und Form ein besseres Verständnis in Bezug auf die Aerodynamik. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Möglichkeit der Windenergieausbeute von Gebäuden und die geeignete Designlösung zu untersuchen. Im zeitlichen Rahmen der Arbeit und der verfügbaren Möglichkeiten wurde eine kurze Beschreibung des Modellierungsansatzes für die Windenergiebewertung aus dem urbanen Fluss skizziert. Es existieren mehrere Möglichkeiten der Windenergieausbeute aus der gebauten Struktur, aber in dieser Arbeit wurde nur der gebäudeintegrierte Kanal fokussiert. Die zeitlich gemittelte und globale Windgeschwindigkeit auf den gebäudeintegrierten Kanälen, die Strömung um die Gebäude herum wurde aus dem Windkanal und der numerischen Analyse gemessen. Verfügbare Windenergieerträge und vorhandene Turbulenzen an den aus der Strömung gemessenen Stellen wurden auf Basis der Windkanaldaten berechnet und mit den Vor- und Nachteilen der jeweiligen Geometrie zusammengefasst. Es wurde festgestellt, dass eine elliptische Kanalkonfiguration eine maximale Energieausbeute aus dem omnidirektionalen freien Stromfluss erzielt. Jedoch wurde eine einfache rechteckige Kanalkonfiguration als die effizienteste und optimierte unter Berücksichtigung ihrer Einfachheit, finanziellen Machbarkeit und relativen Energieausbeute mit anderen Kanalkonfigurationen bestimmt. Die Diplomarbeit zeigte auch, dass die Auf-Dach-Konfiguration auch für die Windenergieerkundung aus der omnidirektionalen freien Strömung sehr vielversprechend ist. Notwendige Empfehlungen wurden basierend auf verfügbaren Ergebnissen für die zukünftige Entwicklung des Forschungsansatzes gegeben. Umfang und Möglichkeiten wurden genannt. Diese Untersuchung hat bewiesen, dass es möglich ist, eine begrenzte Menge an Windenergie aus gebäudegestützten Kanälen zu extrahieren, indem der Konzentrator-Effekt der Gebäudehülle genutzt wird.

Die hybride Brandsimulation (HFS) ist eine neuartige Methode zur Analyse der Gesamtstrukturen im Brandfall. Bei dieser Methode wird der Teil eines Bauwerks, das einem Brand ausgesetzt ist, in einem Brandversuch physikalisch getestet, während der Rest des Bauwerks numerisch modelliert wird. Bei HFS als erweiterter FE-Simulation kontrolliert und aktualisiert das numerische Modell kontinuierlich die Daten des laufenden Brandversuchs. In dieser Dissertation wird ein kleines Benchmark-Problem mit einem Freiheitsgrad verwendet. Es werden eine Reihe von hybriden Brandsimulationen durchgeführt und die Robustheit und Genauigkeit des implementierten HFS-Frameworks wird durch die Untersuchung verschiedener Parameter, wie z.B. des angewandten Lastverhältnisses, der Aufheizrate sowie einflussreicher rechnergestützter Faktoren, validiert. Darüber hinaus wird der Einfluss des Wärmeübergangs an der Schnittstelle von Substrukturen im Hybridmodell durch einen virtuellen HFS-Ansatz dargestellt., Hybrid fire simulation (HFS) is a novel method for analysis of global performance of structures in fire. In the principles of this method, the part of a structure subjected to fire is physically tested in a fire test while the rest of the structure is numerically modeled. In HFS as an extended FE simulation, the numerical model continuously controls and updates the data of the ongoing fire test. In this dissertation, a small-scale one-degree-of-freedom benchmark problem is applied. A series of hybrid fire simulations are performed and the robustness and accuracy of the implemented HFS framework are validated by investigating various parameters as applied load ratio, heating rate as well as influencing computational factors. Additionally, the influence of heat transfer at the interface of substructures in hybrid model is also presented by a virtual HFS approach.

This thesis is aimed at reliable numerical predictions of hydrodynamic damping and loads on floating offshore wind turbines. Investigations of hydrodynamic damping and loads on a moored semi-submersible floater are presented using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The investigations include systematic verification studies comparing three discretisation error and uncertainty quantification methods on four different aspects of floating wind turbine simulations. These aspects are wave propagation, wave loads on a cylinder, surge decay motion of a semi-submersible, and a dynamic mooring model in surge decay motion. The discretisation error and uncertainty estimation approaches are based on Richardson extrapolation. Furthermore, a variety of different settings and models are studied to predict hydrodynamic damping, including temporal and spatial discretisation, wave radiation as well as turbulence and mooring models. Die Ber��cksichtigung von Fluid-Struktur-Interaktionen (FSI) zwischen Ingenieurbauwerken und dem Wind ist eine fundamentale Herausforderung des Windingenieurwesens. Ein noch nicht vollst��ndig verstandenes FSI-bedingtes Ph��nomen stellen hierbei wirbelinduzierte Schwingungen dar. Um das Verst��ndnis dieser Schwingung bei unter- und ��berkritischen Reynoldszahlen zu verbessern, verwendet diese Arbeit eine hybride Strategie, die auf der Durchf��hrung von CFD-Simulationen (Computational Fluid Dynamics) und dem Heranziehen experimentellen Ergebnissen beruht. Die Bewertung der Simulationsergebnisse durch Validierung mit experimentellen Daten erlaubt in einem zweiten Schritt das Erlangen neuer Erkenntnisse ��ber die Natur von wirbelinduzierten Schwingungen, die ��ber die experimentellen Daten hinaus gehen. Die Simulationen umfassen Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Simulationen und Large-Eddy-Simulationen an station��ren, gef��hrt bewegten und frei schwingenden Kreiszylinderabschnittsmodellen.

Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) belong to the most efficient devices for control of particle emissions in the process industry and environmental technologies in general. The operating principle of ESPs, relying on particle precipitation by electrical charging, leads to an enhanced turbulent motion by electrohydrodynamic (EHD) effects within the gaseous working fluid passing through the ESP. This enhanced turbulence is generally considered detrimental to the separation efficiency, because the additional shear forces acting on the collection electrodes promote re-entrainment of already precipitated particles. Further, the enhanced turbulent cross mixing diminishes the transport of charged particles by electric forces directed towards the collection electrodes. In other industrial applications however, many process units that are based on heat or mass transport would benefit from enhanced turbulent mixing. These include heat exchangers for energy recuperation or evaporation and absorption units such as flue gas scrubbers. A combination of these with an ESP possibly allows for versatile new applications in the process industry. The motivation of this thesis is to study the effects of electrohydrodynamically generated motions onto the turbulent cross mixing within gaseous flows over a wide parameter space including variations in geometry and operating conditions. In order to do so, the influence of EHD effects on the three major transport properties, i.e. thermal energy, mass and momentum, were experimentally investigated. Based on analogies caused by similar transport mechanisms, the experimental results were compared despite different methods being used. In order to help with the comparison a simplified eddy viscosity model is applied. The study for each transport property was conducted with a different setup of a tube type ESP. These setups include axial and radial pressure drop measurements to quantify the momentum transport, a self-built local heat transfer sensor to determine heat transfer coefficients and a wetted wall-column to study the enhancement of mass transport phenomena. Experiments on momentum and heat transport include a large variation of different geometries and operating variables such as discharge electrode design, tube diameter, flow velocity, as well as magnitude and polarity of operating voltage. In addition, selected measurements with aerosol particles were conducted, to gain additional insights on the effects of EHD induced turbulence generation by particle bound space charge compared to ion bound space charge in clean gas flows. The results do not only provide transport coefficients for the hands-on application by plant designers, but also feature numerous experimental data that can be used as reference values for ongoing research in the numerical simulation of electrohydrodynamically enhanced flow and therefore significantly increase the available amount of data provided by current literature., Im Rahmen der Maßnahmen zur Eindämmung der Luftverschmutzung sind Elektroabscheider als eines der effektivsten Systeme zur Minderung von Feinstaubemissionen im industriellen Umfeld bekannt. Charakteristisch für den Betrieb von Elektroabscheidern ist das Auftreten elektrohydrodynamischer (EHD) Strömungen, welche die Turbulenz des gasförmigen Trägermediums der Partikeln weiter anfachen. Aus emissionstechnischer Sicht handelt es sich dabei um einen unerwünschten Nebeneffekt, da Scherkräfte, verursacht durch die zusätzliche Turbulenz in der Gasströmung, auf die bereits abgeschiedenen Partikeln auf der Niederschlagselektrode wirken und zu deren Wiedereintrag in die Gasströmung führen. Zudem wirkt die turbulente Quervermischung dem Partikeldrift der geladenen Teilchen in Richtung der Sammelelektrode entgegen. Andere Komponenten der Prozessindustrie hingegen würden von einer erhöhten Turbulenz in der Gasphase profitieren, insbesondere dann, wenn ihr Funktionsprinzip auf Wärme- und Stoffübertragung basiert. Dies beinhaltet neben Wärmeübertragern zur Energierückgewinnung oder Verdampfungszwecken auch Wäscher zur Schadgasabsorption. Damit steht ein großes Potential zur Anwendung des elektrohydrodynamisch verstärkten Wärme- und Stofftransports in der Prozessindustrie zur Verfügung. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es deshalb, die Auswirkungen von EHD-Effekten auf die turbulente Quervermischung in einem Rohr-Elektroabscheider, unter Variation verschiedener Geometrien und Betriebsparameter zu untersuchen. Dazu zählen unterschiedliche Rohrdurchmesser und Sprühelektrodenformen, sowie die Abdeckung eines großen Arbeitsbereichs von Betriebsspannungen beider Polaritäten bei drei unterschiedlichen Strömungsgeschwindigkeiten. Bei ausgewählten Versuchen erfolgt außerdem noch die Zugabe eines stark beladenen Aerosols. Die Wahl der Rohr-Elektroabscheidergeometrie erlaubt es auf Basis der Rotationssymmetrie theoretische Betrachtungen gegebenenfalls zu vereinfachen, wenn experimentelle Untersuchungen durch diese gestützt werden sollen. Die turbulente Quervermischung wird anhand ihres Einfluss auf die drei Haupttransportgrößen, thermische Energie, Masse und Impuls, jeweils auf Basis unterschiedlicher Methoden, charakterisiert. Dies erlaubt einerseits die Validierung der Ergebnisse durch den Vergleich zwischen den Methoden, beispielsweise, wenn bestimmte Transportanalogien zutreffen, andererseits erlaubt es Rückschlüsse auf Besonderheiten der jeweiligen Transportgleichungen, falls Unterschiede zwischen den Transportgleichungen überwiegen. Zum Vergleich wird unter anderem das vereinfachte Modell der Eddy-Viskosität herangezogen. Die Ergebnisse beinhalten dabei neben den experimentell bestimmten Transportkoeffizienten und turbulenten Diffusionskoeffzienten, welche sich zur direkten Anwendung im Anlagenbau eignen, auch eine Vielzahl experimenteller Messdaten, welche als Referenzwerte für numerische Studien herangezogen werden.

The research conducted in this thesis is focused on property-preserving discretizations of hyperbolic partial differential equations. Computational methods for solving such problems need to be carefully designed to produce physically meaningful numerical solutions. In particular, approximations to some quantities of interest should satisfy local and global discrete maximum principles. Moreover, numerical methods need to obey certain conservation relations, and convergence of approximations to the physically relevant exact solution should be ensured if multiple solutions may exist. Many algorithms based on the aforementioned design principles fall into the category of algebraic flux correction (AFC) schemes. Modern AFC discretizations of nonlinear hyperbolic systems express approximate solutions as convex combinations of intermediate states and constrain these states to be admissible. The main focus of our work is on monolithic convex limiting (MCL) strategies that modify spatial semi-discretizations in this way. Contrary to limiting approaches of predictor-corrector type, their monolithic counterparts are well suited for transient and steady problems alike. Further benefits of the MCL framework presented in this thesis include the possibility of enforcing entropy stability conditions in addition to discrete maximum principles. Using the AFC methodology, we transform finite element discretizations into property-preserving low order methods and perform flux correction to recover higher orders of accuracy without losing any desirable properties. The presented methods produce physics-compatible approximations, which exhibit excellent shock capturing capabilities. One novelty of this work is the tailor-made extension of monolithic convex limiting to the shallow water equations with a nonconservative topography term. Our generalized MCL schemes are entropy stable, positivity preserving, and well balanced in the sense that lake at rest equilibria are preserved. Another desirable property of numerical methods for the shallow water equations is the capability to handle wet-dry transitions properly. We present two new approaches to dealing with this issue. To corroborate our computational results with theoretical investigations, we perform numerical analysis for property-preserving discretizations of the time-dependent linear advection equation. In this context, we prove stability and derive an a~priori error estimate in the semi-discrete setting. We also compare the monolithic convex limiting strategy to two representatives of related flux-corrected transport algorithms. Another highlight of this thesis is the chapter on MCL schemes for arbitrary order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations. Building on algorithms developed for continuous Lagrange and Bernstein finite elements, we extend our MCL schemes to the high order DG setting. This research effort involves the design of new AFC tools for numerical fluxes that appear in the DG weak formulation. Our limiting strategy for DG methods exploits the properties of high order Bernstein polynomials to construct sparse discrete operators leading to compact-stencil nonlinear approximations. The proposed numerical methods are applied to various hyperbolic problems. Scalar equations are considered mainly for testing purposes and to simplify numerical analysis. Besides the shallow water system, we study the Euler equations of gas dynamics.

Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt eine Abhandlung über den effizienten Einsatz von hochgenauen Grobstruktursimulationsverfahren (LES) für die präzise Bestimmung des Grenzschichtzustandes in hochbelasteten Niederdruckturbinenstufen unter periodischem Nachlaufeinfluss dar. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf einer präzisen Definition der Problemstellung, einer exakten Ableitung der resultierenden Randbedingungen & Einstellungen und der effizienten Auswertung der resultierenden Daten. Hierdurch können umfassende Einblicke in fundamentale strömungsphysikalische Zusammenhänge gewonnen werden konnten, welche auf Basis der zusätzlich vorgestellten experimentellen Datenbasis nicht ermittelt werden konnten., This work presents a treatise on the efficient use of highly accurate Large Eddy Simulation (LES) techniques for the precise determination of the boundary layer condition in highly loaded low-pressure turbine stages under periodic wake influence. Special attention is paid to a precise definition of the problem, an exact derivation of the resulting boundary conditions & settings and the efficient evaluation of the resulting data. Through this, comprehensive insights into fundamental flow-physical relationships can be gained, which could not be determined on the basis of the additionally presented experimental data base.

The change in morphology of a char particle affects both its trajectory and carbon consumption rate, hence the performance and efficiency of an entrained-flow gasifier. Among key processes taking place in the gasifier, the char conversion process is a limiting step for the overall carbon conversion. For that reason, the Ph.D. thesis presents the evolution of morphology of char particles during the carbon conversion process using particle-resolved transient CFD calculations. Analyses of numerical data obtained from the transient CFD calculations were carried out. As a result, new sub models related to the drag coefficient and the fundamental parameters of char conversion model were emerged. The new sub models were applied for modeling a pressured entrained-flow gasifier at laboratory scale. The numerical results of the gasifier show a good agreement with experimental data and an improvement of the sub models applied.

A local algebraic simulation model was developed, to determine the characteristic length scales for dispersed phases. This model includes the Ishii- Zuber drag model, the lift, the wall lubrication force and the turbulent dispersion force as well. It is based on the Algebraic Interface Area Density (AIAD) model from the Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf (HZDR), which provides the morphology detection and the free surface drag model. The developed model is in agreement with the current state of knowledge based on an examination of the theory and of state of science models for interface momentum transfer. This new simulation model was tested on three different experiments. Two experiments can be found in the literature, the Fabre 1987 and the Hewitt 1987 experiment. And the third simulation is based on a steam drum experiment. This steam drum experiment is designed with ERK Eckrohrkessel GmbH internals and was developed to examine the droplet mass flow out of the turbulent separation stage. The implementation of all models and tests was performed using Ansys CFX. The first analysis was carried out to reproduce a wavy stratified flow to examine the effects of different simulation model set-ups according to the velocity and kinetic energy profiles, as well as the pressure drop gradient and the water level measured by Fabre 1987. The second analysis was a proof on concept for reproducing the vertical flow pattern by an experiment from Hewitt 1987. The third simulation analysed the water distribution in the steam drum and feeding pipes system as well as the droplet carryover into the gas phase in the turbulent separation region of the drum. These simulations have shown, that the accuracy of the particle distribution model in interaction with the drag and non-drag forces is able to reproduce horizontal and vertical flow patterns. Higher deviations are recognised for the liquid volume fraction close above the interface. Generally, simulations can now be performed to optimise industrial steam drum designs., Ein algebraisches Simulationsmodell, basierend auf lokalen Variablen, wurde entwickelt, zur Berechnung von charakteristischen Längen von dispersen Phasen. Dieses Modell beinhaltet das Ishii-Zuber Widerstandsmodell, die „lift“, die „wall lubrication“ und die „turbulent dispersion“ Kraft. Das Modell baut auf das „Algebraic Interface Area Density“ (AIAD) Modell, vom Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf (HZDR) auf, welches die Detektion der Morphologie der Strömung und das Widerstandsmodell der freien Oberfläche bereitstellt. Das entwickelte Modell basiert auf dem Stand der Technik, auf die Begutachtung der Theorie und auf Modelle für den Impulstransport an der Phasengrenzfläche, die Stand der Wissenschaft sind. Auf drei verschiedenen Experimenten wurde das Simulationsmodell angewendet. Die Experimente von Fabre 1987 und Hewitt 1987 wurden aus der Literatur entnommen. Das dritte Experiment war eine Dampftrommel, die entwickelt wurde, um den Tröpfenmassenstrom zu ermitteln, der aus der turbulenten Abscheidungszone mitgerissen wurde. Diese Dampftrommel basiert auf ein Design von ERK Eckrohrkessel GmbH. Die Implementierung und Erprobung wurde mit Ansys CFX durchgeführt. In der ersten Analyse sollte der Einfluss der verschiedenen Modelle auf das Geschwindigkeits-, das kinetische Energieprofil, den Druckgradienten und die Höhe der Phasengrenzfläche bezüglich einer Wellenströmung im Fabre 1987 Experimente untersucht werden. Die zweite Analyse war ein Machbarkeitsnachweis bezüglich eines vertikalen Zweiphasenströmung-Experimentes von Hewitt 1987. In einer dritten Analyse wurde die Wasserverteilung in einer Dampftrommel und den Zulaufrohren, sowie der mitgerissene Massenstrom an Tröpfchen aus der turbulenten Abscheidungszone, untersucht. Diese Simulationen haben gezeigt, dass die Genauigkeit des Partikelverteilungsmodells, den „drag“ und „non-drag“ Kräften ausreicht, um horizontale und vertikale Strömungsformen zu reproduzieren. Bei der Phasenverteilung über der Phasengrenzfläche sind größere Abweichungen zu erkennen. Generell eignet sich das Simulationsmodell, um eine Optimierung von Dampftrommeln jetzt durchzuführen.

In this thesis, the novel Tensor Diffusion approach for the numerical simulation of viscoelastic fluid flows is introduced. Therefore, it is assumed that the extra-stress tensor can be decomposed into a product of the strain-rate tensor and a (nonsymmetric) tensor-valued viscosity function. As a main potential advantage, which can be demonstrated for fully developed channel flows, the underlying complex material behaviour can be explicitly described by means of the so-called Diffusion Tensor. Consequently, this approach offers the possibility to reduce the complete nonlinear viscoelastic three-field model to a generalised Stokes-like problem regarding the velocity and pressure fields, only. This is enabled by inserting the Diffusion Tensor into the momentum equation of the flow model, while the extra-stress tensor or constitutive equation can be neglected. As a result, flow simulations of viscoelastic fluids could be performed by applying techniques particularly designed for solving the (Navier-)Stokes equations, which leads to a way more robust and efficient numerical approach. But, a conceptually improved behaviour of the numerical scheme concerning viscoelastic fluid flow simulations may be exploited with respect to discretisation and solution techniques of typical three- or four-field formulations as well. In detail, an (artificial) diffusive operator, which is closely related to the nature of the underlying material behaviour, is inserted into the (discrete) problem by means of the Diffusion Tensor. In this way, certain issues particularly regarding the flow simulation of viscoelastic fluids without a Newtonian viscosity contribution, possibly including realistic material and model parameters, can be resolved. In a first step, the potential benefits of the Tensor Diffusion approach are illustrated in the framework of channel flow configurations, where several linear and nonlinear material models are considered for characterising the viscoelastic material behaviour. In doing so, typical viscoelastic flow phenomena can be obtained by simply solving a symmetrised Tensor Stokes problem including a suitable choice of the Diffusion Tensor arising from both, differential as well as integral constitutive laws. The validation of the novel approach is complemented by simulating the Flow around cylinder benchmark by means of a four-field formulation of the Tensor Stokes problem. In this context, corresponding reference results are reproduced quite well, despite the applied lower-order approximation of the tensor-valued viscosity. A further evaluation of the Tensor Diffusion approach is performed regarding two-dimensional contraction flows, where potential advantages as well as improvements and certain limits of this novel approach are detected. Therefore, suitable stabilisation techniques concerning the Diffusion Tensor variable plus the behaviour of deduced monolithic and segregated solution methods are investigated.

Purpose – Test the aerodynamic analysis code VSPAERO, which is part of OpenVSP from NASA. Apply VSPAERO to calculate the lift curve slope and the span efficiency factor of straight wings (for various aspect and taper ratios) as well as the induced drag of box wings (for various h/b-ratios) relative to their reference wing. --- Methodology – VSPAERO results are compared with results from analytical equations, wind tunnel measurements, and results produced with other aerodynamic codes. --- Findings – VSPAERO offers correct and reliable results, if the simulation is set up with care. The user must always keep an eye on model discretization and refinement, flow conditions, and number of iterations. The Vortex Lattice Method (VLM) and the panel method are best used for different purposes. The VLM shows shorter simulation time and produces reliable results. The panel method is more complicated to use. Numerical results are also good. In addition, the panel method can be used better to visualize flow phenomena. Hoerner's simple approach to induced drag estimation can be used to approximate results of the VLM and the panel method, if a simple correction factor is applied. --- Research Limitations – Most of the tests of VSPAERO have been done with a simple wing geometry, as such much simpler than a full aircraft geometry. --- Practical Implications – VSPAERO can be used with relative ease. It can also be used to show flow phenomena on full aircraft geometry. --- Originality – Repeating simple calculations done many times before does not sound original, but doing this with the relatively new software VSPAERO offering the VLM as well as the panel method seems to be original after all.

This thesis is an attempt to assess some of the effects that electroquasistatic body forces exert on turbulent internally forced convective flows. In order to do that, a stochastic turbulence model is employed, namely, the One-Dimensional Turbulence (ODT) model. The reduced dimensionality of ODT demands a reduction of the Navier-Stokes equations (and in this case, also the Maxwell equations), into a 1-D system. This is done by performing an asymptotic analysis in terms of the nondimensional numbers of the flow. Also, a validation step due to the relative novel character of the cylindrical ODT formulation is done for an incompressible and constant properties flow regime and a variable density flow regime. The validation is presented for both the temporal (T-ODT) and a novel spatial (S-ODT) formulation in both planar and cylindrical geometries. Results in the constant property case show that wall normal (and radial) profiles, in both the T-ODT and S-ODT formulations, show good agreement with each other and to the data of Direct Numerical Simulations (DNSs). For the evaluated variable density heated pipe flow, gradients at the wall can be better reproduced with S-ODT. After validating the model, ODT is applied first into a planar configuration which emulates the flow in a wire-plate Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP). For this flow, the additional input energy due to the electroquasistatic body force has an effect on the modification of the bulk velocity, and subsequently, the skin friction coefficient. Some qualitative DNS trends are confirmed with ODT, such as the localized increase of the Reynolds stress, as a consequence of increased eddy activity close to the discharge electrodes. Next, the results of ODT simulations in a cylindrical wire-tube ESP are presented. Here, ODT results are compared to experimental results. ODT results for global integral quantities such as the streamwise pressure gradient and the Nusselt number enhancement ratio are able to match in a reasonable way the experimental results. The competing relevance between the EHD contribution to turbulence by momentum, and by affecting the temperature and density due to the Joule heating effect is also analyzed, showing the leading order relevance of the former one. Specifically for the Nusselt number results, the sensitivity of the EHD flow to transition effects is shown to be very significant. This thesis may open the door to a vast new field of phenomena which can not only serve for the further validation of the ODT model against DNSs or experiments, but also for the real use of ODT in applications which are so far inaccessible for traditional DNSs. Ziel dieser Dissertation ist die Untersuchung der Effekte von elektroquasistatischen Volumenkräften auf turbulente druckgetriebene Strömungen. Dazu wurde das stochastisch Eindimensionale Turbulenzmodell (ODT) angewendet. Als ein Modell niedriger Ordnung benötigt ODT eine Reduktion der Navier-Stokes-Gleichungen (sowie der Maxwell-Gleichungen hier) zu einem 1-D System. Diese Reduktion erfolgte mittels einer asymptotischen Analyse, welche die Strömung als Funktion von Leading-Order-Effekten entdimensionalisierter Kennzahlen beschreibt. Zusätzlich erfolgte in der Dissertation ein Validierungsschritt aufgrund der kürzlich veröffentlichten Zylinderformulierung für ODT. Zur Validierung wurden inkompressible Strömungen konstanter Fluideigenschaften, sowie Strömungen variabler Dichte betrachtet. Die Validierung stellt Ergebnisse von zeitlich (T-ODT) und räumlich (S-ODT) entiwckelnde ODT-Simulationen für planare und zylindrische Koordinatensysteme vor. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass wand-normale (oder radiale) Profile, sowohl in T-ODT und S-ODT, eine gute Übereinstimmung miteinander und mit Daten von Direkten Numerische Simulationen (DNS) aufzeigen. Im Fall der aufgeheizten Rohrströmungen variabler Dichte lassen sich die Gradienten an der Wand mittels S-ODT besser reproduzieren. Nach der Validierung des Modells wurde ODT erstmals auf eine planare Konfiguration, welche die Strömung einer Plattenelektroabscheider simuliert, angewendet. Der zusätzliche Energiebeitrag, der von der elektroquasistatischen Volumenkraft geliefert wird, hat einen Effekt auf die Bulk-Geschwindigkeit, sowie auf den Reibungsbeiwert. Einige Trends der DNS lassen sich mit ODT bestätigen, z.B. der lokalisierte Anstieg der Reynolds'schen Schubspannungen, der aufgrund der erhöhten Wahrscheinlichkeit der Erzeugung turbulenter Wirbel in der Nähe der Sprühelektrode verursacht wird. Im Anschluss werden ODT-Ergebnisse eines zylindrischen Rohrelektroabscheiders vorgestellt. Diese sind in Form von integralen Größen gegen experimentellen Messungen vergliechen, z.B., der Druckgradient in Strömungsrichtung, sowie das Erhöhungsverhältnis der Nusseltzahl. Die von ODT generierten integralen Größen stimmen gut mit experimentellen Messwerten überein. Die Wichtigkeit des EHD-Beitrags zur Turbulenz mittels Impulstransport, sowie dessen Einfluss auf die Temperatur und Dichte gemäß des ersten Jouleschen Gesetzes wurde ebenfalls mit ODT untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen den Effekt führender Ordnung des EHD-Beitrags auf die Turbulenz. Eine große Sensitivität der Nusseltzahl-Ergebnisse bzgl. der Transitionseffekten in EHD-Strömungen konnte parallel nachgewiesen werden. Dank dieser Arbeit lassen sich neue Phänomene mittels numerischer Simulationen untersuchen. Dies dient zur weiteren Validierung des ODT-Modells anhand DNS und Experimenten. Außerdem erlaubt die Dissertation zukünftige Anwendungen von ODT auf Phänomene und Strömungen, die bisher unzugänglich für DNS sind.

Der Hauptzweck dieser Studie ist es, ein profundes Wissen über die Wechselwirkung zwischen Kavitation und Luftfreisetzung zu erlangen, indem das komplexe Feld der Blasendynamik und die damit verbundenen Dampf- und Luftflüsse unter Nichtgleichgewichtsbedingungen untersucht werden. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, werden die maßgeblichen Differentialgleichungen numerisch gelöst, einschließlich der Erhaltung von Masse, Impuls und Energie innerhalb und außerhalb der Blase. Die gesamte Thermodynamik wurde auf der Grundlage validierter experimenteller Datensätze in das Modell implementiert, sodass das Modell für verschiedene Flüssigkeiten und Flüssigkeitsgemische verwendet werden kann. Dieses Modell mit detaillierter Erklärung der Transportprozesse und der hohen Genauigkeit kann auf die CFD-Codes angewendet und als geeignetes Kavitationsmodell verwendet werden., The main purpose of this study is to gain a profound knowledge of the interaction between cavitation and air release by investigating the complex field of bubble dynamics and its associated vapor and air fluxes under non-equilibrium conditions. For achieving this goal, the governing differential equations are solved numerically, including conservation of mass, momentum, and energy both within and outside the bubble. In contrast to existing models, the whole complete thermodynamics has been implemented into the model based on validated experimental data sets, allowing to utilize the model for different liquids and liquid mixtures. This model, with detailed explanation of transport processes, with the least simplifying assumptions, and the high level of accuracy can be applied into the CFD codes and can be utilized as a proper cavitation model.

This thesis is concerned with the development of a computational model and simulation technique capable of capturing the complex physics behind the intriguing phenomena of Elasto-capillarity. Elastocapillarity refers to the ability of capillary forces or surface tensions to deform elastic solids through a complex interplay between the energy of the surfaces (interfaces) and the elastic strain energy in the solid bulk. The described configuration gives rise to a three-phase system featuring a fluid-fluid interface (for instance the interface of a liquid and an ambient fluid such as air) and two additional interfaces separating the elastic solid from the first and second fluids, respectively. This setup is encountered in the wetting of soft substrates which is an emerging young field of research with many potential applications in micro- and nanotechnology and biomechanics. By virtue of the fact that a lot of physical phenomena under the umbrella of the wetting of soft substrates (e.g. Stick-slip motion, Durotaxis, Shuttleworth effect, etc.) are not yet fully understood, numerical analysis and simulation tools may yield invaluable insights when it comes to understanding the underlying processes. The problem tackled in this work – dubbed Elasto-Capillary Fluid-Structure Interaction or Binary-Fluid-Structure Interaction (BFSI) – is of multiphysics nature and poses a tremendous and challenging complexity when it comes to its numerical treatment. The complexity is given by the individual difficulties of the involved Two-phase Flow and Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) subproblems and the additional complexity emerging from their complex interplay. The two-phase flow problems considered in this work are immiscible two-component incompressible flow problems which we address with a Cahn-Hilliard phase field-based two-phase flow model through the Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard (NSCH) equations. The phase field method – also known as the diffuse interface method – is based on models of fluid free energy and has a solid theoretical foundation in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. It may therefore be perceived as a physically motivated extension of the level-set or volume-of-fluid methods. It differs from other Eulerian interface motion techniques by virtue of the fact that it does not feature a sharp, but a diffuse interface of finite width whose dynamics are governed by the joint minimization of a double well chemical energy and a gradientsquared surface energy – both being constituents of the fluid free energy. Particularly for two-phase flows, diffuse interface models have gained a lot of attention due to their ability to handle complex interface dynamics such moving contact lines on wetted surfaces, and droplet coalescence or segregation without any special procedures. Our computational model for the FSI subproblem is based on a hyperelastic material model for the solid. When modeling the coupled dynamics of FSI, one is confronted with the dilemma that the fluid model is naturally based on an Eulerian perspective while it is very natural to express the solid problem in Lagrangian formulation. The monolithic approach we take, uses a fully coupled Arbitrary Lagrangian– Eulerian (ALE) variational formulation of the FSI problem and applies Galerkin-based Isogeometric Analysis for the discretization of the partial differential equations involved. This approach solves the difficulty of a common variational description and facilitates a consistent Galerkin discretization of the FSI problem. Besides, the monolithic approach avoids any instability issues that are associated with partitioned FSI approaches when the fluid and solid densities approach each other. The BFSI computational model presented in this work is obtained through the combination of the above described phase field-based two-phase flow and the monolithic fluid-structure interaction models and yields a very robust and powerful method for the simulation of elasto-capillary fluid-structure interaction problems. In addition, we also show that it may also be used for the modeling of FSI with free surfaces, involving totally or partially submerged solids. Our BFSI model may be classified as “quasi monolithic” as we employ a two-step solution algorithm, where in the first step we solve the pure Cahn-Hilliard phase field problem and use its results in a second step in which the binary-fluid-flow, the solid deformation and the mesh regularization problems are solved monolithically.

Einige industrielle Prozesse nutzen die Vorteile von überkritischem CO\(_2\) als Lösungsmittel. Die bemerkenswerten und einzigartigen physikalischen Eigenschaften von Mischungen, cCO\(_2\) enthalten, führen jedoch zu einer Ausweitung ihres Anwendungsbereichs auf nochunerforschte Gebiete, wie die der Emulgierverfahren.Das Verständnis der Tröpfchenbildung ist entscheidend, um den Effekt von gelöstem cCO\(_2\) bei Hochdruckemulgierverfahren zu bestimmen. Die Grundlagen beinhalten die Tröpfchenzertrümmerungs, die mit den Betriebsbedingungen und der Mischvorrichtung verknüpft sind. Aufgrund der Natur des Systems beeinflussen verschiedene Parameter diese physikalischen Prozesse. Um den Einfluss von cCO\(_2\) auf die Dispersionsprozesse zu verstehen, werden die Parameter bestimmt und deren Einflüsse untersucht.

Sophisticated engine knock modeling supports the optimization of the thermal efficiency of spark ignition engines. For this purpose the presented work introduces the resonance theory (Bradley and co-workers, 2002) for three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and for the zero-dimensional Spark Ignition Stochastic Reactor Model (SI-SRM) simulations. Hereby, the auto-ignition in the unburnt gases is investigated directly instead of the resulting pressure fluctuations. Based on the detonation diagram auto-ignition events can be classified to be in acceptable deflagration regime or possibly turn to a harmful developing detonation. Combustion is modeled using detailed chemistry and formulations for turbulent flame propagation. The use of detailed chemistry caters for the prediction of physical and chemical properties, such as the octane rating, C:H:O-ratio or dilution. For both models, the laminar flame speed is retrieved from surrogate specific look-up tables compiled using the reaction mechanism for Ethanol containing Toluene Reference Fuels by Seidel (2017). In the fresh gas zone, the scheme is used for auto-ignition prediction. For this purpose, the G-equation coupled with a Well-Stirred-Reactor model is applied in RANS. In analogy, in the SI-SRM the combustion is modeled using a two zone model with stochastic mixing between the particles. RANS is used to develop the knock classification methodology and to analyze in detail location, size and shape of the auto-ignition kernels. RANS estimates the ensemble average of the process and therefore cannot reproduce a developing detonation. Hence, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to verify the methodology. Studies using wide ranges of surrogates with different octane rating and cycle-to-cycle variations are carried out using the computationally efficient SI-SRM. Cyclic variations are predicted based on stochastic mixing, stochastic heat transfer to the wall, varying exhaust gas recirculation composition and imposed probability density functions for the inflammation time and the scaling of the mixing time retrieved from RANS. The methodology is verified for spark timing and octane rating. It is shown that the surrogate formulation has an important impact on knock prediction. RANS is suitable to predict the mean strength of auto-ignition in the unburnt gas if the thermodynamic and chemical state of the ignition kernel is analyzed instead of the pressure gradients. The probability of the transition to knocking combustion can be determined. Good agreement between RANS and SI-SRM are obtained. The combination of both tools gives insights of local effects using RANS and the distribution of auto-ignition in the whole pressure range of an operating point using SI-SRM with reasonable computationally cost for development purposes. Die vorliegende Arbeit diskutiert einen neuen Ansatz zur Bewertung von motorischen Klopfen mittels der Resonanztheorie (Bradley und Kollegen, 2002) für die Nutzung in dreidimensionalen Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Simulationen (RANS) und im nulldimensionalen Spark Ignition Stochastic Reactor Model (SI-SRM). Hierbei wird die Selbstentzündung in den unverbrannten Gasen direkt untersucht anstatt der resultierenden Druckwelle. Mit Hilfe des Detonationsdiagramms können Selbstzündungsereignisse klassifiziert und der mögliche Übergang zu einer schädlichen, sich aufbauenden Detonation bestimmt werden. Die vorgemischte Verbrennung wird mittels detaillierter Chemie und einer Beschreibung der turbulenten Flammenausbreitung modelliert. Die Verwendung von detaillierter Chemie ermöglicht die Vorhersage physikalischer und chemischer Prozesse, zum Beispiel, abhängig von der Oktanzahl, dem C:H:O-Verhältniss oder der Verdünnung. Für beide Modelle wird die laminare Flammengeschwindigkeit aus Tabellen abgerufen, die unter Verwendung des Reaktionsmechanismus für Ethanol haltige Toluol-Referenzkraftstoffe (ETRF) von Seidel (2017) unter Berücksichtigung der Zusammensetzung des Ersatzkraftstoffes erstellt werden. In den unverbrannten Gasen wir der Reaktionsmechanismus für die Simulation der Selbstzündung genutzt. Zu diesem Zweck wird in RANS die G-Gleichung mit einem Well-Stirred-Reactor (WSR) Modell gekoppelt. In Analogie wird im SI-SRM ein Zwei-Zonen-Modell mit stochastischer Mischung der Partikel verwendet. RANS wird zur Entwicklung der Methodik zur Klopfbewertung und zur detaillierten Analyse von Position, Größe und Form der Selbstentzündungskerne verwendet. RANS liefert ensemble-gemittelte Größen und kann daher eine entstehende Detonation nicht auflösen. Daher wird die Methodik mit Large Eddy Simulationen (LES) verifiziert. Für Studien, die viele verschiede Ersatzkraftstoffe mit unterschiedlichen Oktanzahlen und zyklische Schwankungen untersuchen, wird das SI-SRM aufgrund der kurzen Rechenzeiten genutzt. Zyklische Schwankungen werden basierend auf stochastischem Mischen der virtuellen Partikeln, stochastischem Wärmeübergang zur Wand, variierende Zusammensetzung der zurück geführten Abgase und vorgegeben Verteilungsfunktionen für Entflammung und Mischungszeit modelliert. Die Methodik wurde hinsichtlich der Reaktion auf Zündzeitpunkt und Oktanzahl verifiziert. Die Zusammensetzung des Ersatzkraftstoffs hat einen maßgeblichen Einfluss auf die Vorhersage des motorischen Klopfens. RANS ist geeignet, die mittlere Stärke der Selbstzündung im unverbrannten Gas vorherzusagen, wenn der thermodynamische und chemische Zustand des Zündkerns analysiert wird anstatt des Druckgradientens. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit des Übergangs zu einer sich aufbauenden Detonation (Klopfen) kann bestimmt werden. Die Ergebnisse von RANS und SI-SRM stimmen gut überein. Die Kombination beider Werkzeuge ermöglicht die Untersuchung lokaler Effekte (RANS) und die Verteilung der Selbstzündung über die gesamte Ausdehnung des maximalen Druckes eines Betriebspunktes (SI-SRM) mit vertretbarem rechnerischem Aufwand für den Einsatz in der Motorenentwicklung.

Due to the electrification of cars and the reduction of noise generated by the powertrain, the automotive industry has gained growing interest for computer-based acoustic design of HVAC systems. In order to implement tools for virtual noise reduction, it is necessary to develop simulation procedures that are able to reliably predict the aeroacoustic noise of HVAC systems and their components. For this purpose, a hybrid simulation technique was proposed and tested in this work: First of all, the non-stationary flow was computed by use of a common finite volume solver; subsequently, the aeroacoustic sources were evaluated; finally, the sound radiation was simulated by a finite element code. The coupling procedure between these simulation steps is a crucial task to achieve excellent results, for which two aeroacoustic approaches were tested. Applying Lighthill's analogy was able to yield spectra in good agreement with experiments. However, the effort required for the implementation and acoustic simulation was high, while the possibilities for source analysis were limited. These problems did not occur when the acoustic perturbation equations (APE) in form of the perturbed convective wave equation (PCWE) were used. This approach provides insight into the pure sound source and propagation fields. However, it was found to be more sensitive regarding numerical noise and the truncation of sources. Based on these findings, this work revealed how the proposed procedure can be used to successfully predict the far-field noise spectra of a generic air outlet, a real air outlet of a car, an HVAC unit, a centrifugal fan, and eventually a complete HVAC system. Therefore, this work demonstrated the applicability of hybrid approaches for the prediction of HVAC noise. Furthermore, details on their correct usage are provided to enable the error diagnostics of aeroacoustic simulations also in other fields of application. These findings offer the basis for the development of computer-based acoustic design tools for HVAC systems and thus pave the way for further improvements regarding practical usage., Mit zunehmendem Einsatz von Elektromotoren im Automobilbau sowie durch Maßnahmen zur Geräuschreduktion im herkömmlichen Antriebsstrang hat das Interesse am Klangdesign von PKW Klimatisierungsgeräten zugenommen. Dieser Aspekt wird bisher jedoch nicht im computergestützten Entwicklungsprozess berücksichtigt. Hierzu sind verlässliche Methoden zur Schallvorhersage von Klimatisierungsgeräten und deren Komponenten notwendig. Zu diesem Zweck wurde in dieser Arbeit ein hybrider Simulationsansatz vorgeschlagen und getestet: Im ersten Schritt wurde das instationäre Strömungsfeld berechnet. In einem Zwischenschritt wurden die strömungsinduzierten Schallquellen bestimmt und zum Schluss die akustische Schallausbreitung simuliert. Die Kopplungsstrategie bzw. Quelltermberechnung zwischen beiden Simulationsschritten ist entscheidend um exzellente Ergebnisse zu erhalten. Dazu wurden zwei aeroakustische Ansätze verfolgt. Der erste Ansatz war die Analogie von Lighthill, die zu Schallspektren in guter Übereinstimmung mit den Experimenten führte. Dabei haben sich die komplexe Implementierung der korrekten Randbedingungen und die fehlende Trennung von Strömung und Akustik als nachteilig erwiesen. Dieses Verhalten konnte bei Anwendung von akustischen Störungsgleichungen (APE) nicht festgestellt werden, was am Beispiel der gestörten konvektiven Wellengleichung (PCWE) gezeigt wurde. Diese Vorgehensweise ermöglicht einen Einblick in das reine akustische Quell- und Ausbreitungsfeld. Nachteilig erwies sich hier jedoch das ausgeprägtere numerische Rauschen sowie die Sensitivität bzgl. abgeschnittenen Quellregionen. Auf Basis dieser Erkenntnisse konnte gezeigt werden, wie die Schallspektren im Fernfeld eines vereinfachten Ausströmers, eines realen PKW-Ausströmers, einer Klimageräteeinheit, eines Radialgebläses und schließlich einer Gesamtklimaanlage erfolgreich vorhergesagt werden können. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit demonstrieren die Anwendbarkeit hybrider Ansätze für die Vorhersage von Strömungsschall in PKW-Klimaanlagen. Darüber hinaus werden Details bezüglich ihres korrekten Einsatzes erläutert, wodurch die Fehlerdiagnose von aeroakustischen Simulationen auch in anderen Anwendungsfeldern vereinfacht wird. Solving partial differential equations (PDEs) is a fundamental challenge in many application domains in industry and academia alike. With increasingly large problems, efficient and highly scalable implementations become more and more crucial. Today, facing this challenge is more difficult than ever due to the increasingly heterogeneous hardware landscape. One promising approach is developing domain‐specific languages (DSLs) for a set of applications. Using code generation techniques then allows targeting a range of hardware platforms while concurrently applying domain‐specific optimizations in an automated fashion. The present work aims to further the state of the art in this field. As domain, we choose PDE solvers and, in particular, those from the group of geometric multigrid methods. To avoid having a focus too broad, we restrict ourselves to methods working on structured and patch‐structured grids. We face the challenge of handling a domain as complex as ours, while providing different abstractions for diverse user groups, by splitting our external DSL ExaSlang into multiple layers, each specifying different aspects of the final application. Layer 1 is designed to resemble LaTeX and allows inputting continuous equations and functions. Their discretization is expressed on layer 2. It is complemented by algorithmic components which can be implemented in a Matlab‐like syntax on layer 3. All information provided to this point is summarized on layer 4, enriched with particulars about data structures and the employed parallelization. Additionally, we support automated progression between the different layers. All ExaSlang input is processed by our jointly developed Scala code generation framework to ultimately emit C++ code. We particularly focus on how to generate applications parallelized with, e.g., MPI and OpenMP that are able to run on workstations and large‐scale cluster alike. We showcase the applicability of our approach by implementing simple test problems, like Poisson’s equation, as well as relevant applications from the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In particular, we implement scalable solvers for the Stokes, Navier‐Stokes and shallow water equations (SWE) discretized using finite differences (FD) and finite volumes (FV). For the case of Navier‐Stokes, we also extend our implementation towards non‐uniform grids, thereby enabling static mesh refinement, and advanced effects such as the simulated fluid being non‐Newtonian and non‐isothermal.

Der Effekt eines externen Magnetfeldes auf die mehrphasige und turbulente Strömung in Stranggußkokillen und deren Wechelspiel führt in den wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten zu widersprüchlichen Aussagen. Die verschiedenen Prozessparameter können innerhalb eines kleinen Varianzbereichs entscheidenden Einfluss auf die Aussage haben, ob ein Magnetfeld begünstigend oder schädigend auf die Qualität des Produkts wirkt. Um wichtige Einflussfaktoren zu identifizieren, werden daher numerische Strömungssimulationen des Prozesses durchgeführt. Dazu wird zunächst ein mehrphasiger und inkompressibler Mehrregionen-CFD-Löser für magnetohydrodynamische Strömungen entwickelt und validiert, um die komplexe Strömung in einer Stranggußkokille mit hoher Genauigkeit simulieren zu können. Darauf aufbauend wird das numerische Setup anhand einer Modellkokille mit aktuellen Messdaten validiert. Durch die neuartige Kombination Lagrange'scher Lösungsmethoden mit angepassten Termen für die Magnetohydrodynamik sowie der skalenaufgelösten magnetohydrodynamischen Turbulenz, können erstmals Aussagen zur optimalen Magnetfeldverteilung im Hinblick auf Strömungsstabilität, Turbulenzmodulation und Blasenverteilung getroffen werden. Mit Hilfe dieses Wissens können neuartige Konzepte elektromagnetischer Bremssysteme für den Stranggußprozess entwickelt werden.

Für den Einsatz von ableitungsbasierten Optimierungsverfahren für die Verbesserung von Zielgrößen industrieller Produkte, wie z.B. dem Wirkungsgrad einer Turbine, werden exakte Ableitungen benötigt, um die letzten Prozent an möglicher Effizienz-steigerung zu erhalten. Dafür ist es notwendig, dass die Ableitungen immer konsistent zu den Lösungsverfahren in der eingesetzten Lösersoftware sind. Problematisch ist dabei die fortlaufende Weiterentwicklung an der Lösersoftware, die meist dazu führt, dass approximative Ableitungsverfahren eingesetzt werden oder die Ableitungsberechnung in der Software nicht erneuert wird und somit veraltet und inkonsistent ist. In dieser Arbeit wird ein universeller Ansatz vorgeschlagen, der zum einen die gesamte Software mittels Algorithmischen Differenzierens (AD) ableitet und zum anderem eine korrekte und konsistente Ableitung nach jeder Änderung sicherstellt. Um die Korrektheit und Konsistenz zu garantieren, wird die Technik des Variable Tagging entwickelt. Diese überprüft zur Laufzeit ob alle Abhängigkeiten von den eingesetzten Ableitungsmethoden korrekt berücksichtigt werden. Für die generelle Überprüfung, ob eine Ableitungsmethode korrekt implementiert ist, wird ein Theorem für die Vergleichbarkeit von AD Ableitungen entwickelt. Aus diesem Theorem ergeben sich Techniken, wie eine Implementierung getestet werden kann. Durch Analyse von vorliegenden industriellen Fällen wird die praktische Anwendbarkeit der entwickelten Techniken erfolgreich bestätigt. Die so erzeugten Ableitungen sind damit bereits konsistent und korrekt, jedoch kann die Effizienz des Verfahrens noch gesteigert werden. Dazu werden neue Ablei-tungsalgorithmen entwickelt. Eine konsistente Herleitung mit einem Fix-Punkt-Iterator beinhaltet alle dem Stand der Technik entsprechenden Algorithmen und ergibt zwei neue Algorithmen, die alle implementationstechnischen Details mitberücksichtigen und damit die Konsistenz der Ableitungsergebnisse nicht verletzen. Des Weiteren werden bekannte Techniken für das automatische Auffinden der größ-ten Ressourcenverbraucher vorgestellt und erweitert. Das Datenlayout für die Berechnung der Kenngrößen für die Ressourcenverbraucher, wie z.B. die Anzahl der Eingabe- und Ausgabewerte oder der Speicherverbrauch, wurde so erweitert, dass die Geschwindigkeit der Anwendung nur geringfügig verändert wird. Die Ressourcenverbraucher können mit Techniken wie Checkpointing und Preaccumulation behandelt werden. Die bisher in der Literatur fehlende Analyse, wie diese Techniken den Zeit- und Speicherverbrauch verändern, wird durchgeführt und Besonderheiten bezüglich verschiedener AD-Werkzeuge werden betrachtet. Als letzten Schritt werden die benutzten AD Werkzeuge genauer analysiert. Basie-rend auf den existierenden Implementierungen wird eine generelle Übersicht von allen möglichen Implementationstechniken durch Operatorüberladen gezeigt. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt auf dem minimalen Speicherverbrauch eines AD-Werkzeuges und stellt implementationstechnische Verbesserungen vor. Es resultiert die erstmals mögliche Vergleichbarkeit von AD-Werkzeugen auf einer theoretischen Ebene. Dies dient als Basis zur Entwicklung eines optimalen Werkzeugs. Das neue Software-Werkzeug CoDiPack geht aus diesen Überlegungen hervor und wird in seinem Design und Konzepten vorgestellt. Die in dieser Arbeit vorgestellten Verbesserungen und Analysen ermöglichen es, eine automatisierte, konsistente und korrekte Ableitung für industrielle Zwecke effizient zur Verfügung zu stellen. If gradient based derivative algorithms are used to improve industrial products by reducing their target functions, the derivatives need to be exact. The last percent of possible improvement, like the efficiency of a turbine, can only be gained if the derivatives are consistent with the solution process that is used in the simulation software. It is problematic that the development of the simulation software is an ongoing process which leads to the use of approximated derivatives. If a derivative computation is implemented manually, it will be inconsistent after some time if it is not updated. This thesis presents a generalized approach which differentiates the whole simulation software with Algorithmic Differentiation (AD), and guarantees a correct and consistent derivative computation after each change to the software. For this purpose, the variable tagging technique is developed. The technique checks at run-time if all dependencies, which are used by the derivative algorithms, are correct. Since it is also necessary to check the correctness of the implementation, a theorem is developed which describes how AD derivatives can be compared. This theorem is used to develop further methods that can detect and correct errors. All methods are designed such that they can be applied in real world applications and are used within industrial configurations. The process described above yields consistent and correct derivatives but the efficiency can still be improved. This is done by deriving new derivative algorithms. A fixed-point iterator approach, with a consistent derivation, yields all state of the art algorithms and produces two new algorithms. These two new algorithms include all implementation details and therefore they produce consistent derivative results. For detecting hot spots in the application, the state of the art techniques are presented and extended. The data management is changed such that the performance of the software is affected only marginally when quantities, like the number of input and output variables or the memory consumption, are computed for the detection. The hot spots can be treated with techniques like checkpointing or preaccumulation. How these techniques change the time and memory consumption is analyzed and it is shown how they need to be used in selected AD tools. As a last step, the used AD tools are analyzed in more detail. The major implementation strategies for operator overloading AD tools are presented and implementation improvements for existing AD tools are discussed.\ The discussion focuses on a minimal memory consumption and makes it possible to compare AD tools on a theoretical level. The new AD tool CoDiPack is based on these findings and its design and concepts are presented. The improvements and findings in this thesis make it possible, that an automatic, consistent and correct derivative is generated in an efficient way for industrial applications.

Während CFD Simulationen für Metallschmelze im Rahmen des SFB920 fallen auf dem Taurus HPC Cluster in Dresden sehr große Datenmengen an, deren Handhabung den wissenschaftlichen Arbeitsablauf stark verlangsamen. Zum einen ist der Transfer in Visualisierungssysteme nur unter hohem Zeitaufwand möglich. Zum anderen ist interaktive Analyse von zeitlich abhängigen Prozessen auf Grund des Speicherflaschenhalses nahezu unmöglich. Aus diesen Gründen beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Dissertation mit der Entwicklung sog. Temporaler In-Situ Kompression für wissenschaftliche Daten direkt innerhalb von CFD Simulationen. Dabei werden mittels neuer Quantisierungsverfahren die Daten auf ~10% komprimiert, wobei dekomprimierte Daten einen Fehler von maximal 1% aufweisen. Im Gegensatz zu nicht-temporaler Kompression, wird bei temporaler Kompression der Unterschied zwischen Zeitschritten komprimiert, um den Kompressionsgrad zu erhöhen. Da die Datenmenge um ein Vielfaches kleiner ist, werden Kosten für die Speicherung und die Übertragung gesenkt. Da Kompression, Transfer und Dekompression bis zu 4 mal schneller ablaufen als der Transfer von unkomprimierten Daten, wird der wissenschaftliche Arbeitsablauf beschleunigt.

This dissertation addresses the analysis of partially premixed flame configurations and the detection and characterization of their local flame regimes. First, the identification of flame regimes in experimental data is intensively discussed. Current methods for combustion regime characterization, such as the flame index, rely on 3D gradient information that is not accessible with available experimental techniques. Here, a method is proposed for reaction zone detection and characterization, which can be applied to instantaneous 1D Raman/Rayleigh line measurements of major species and temperature as well as to the results of laminar and turbulent flame simulations, without the need for 3D gradient information. Several derived flame markers, namely the mixture fraction, the heat release rate and the chemical explosive mode, are combined to detect and characterize premixed versus non-premixed reaction zones. The methodology is developed and evaluated using fully resolved simulation data from laminar flames. The fully resolved 1D simulation data are spatially filtered to account for the difference in spatial resolution between the experiment and the simulation, and experimental uncertainty is superimposed onto the filtered numerical results to produce Raman/Rayleigh equivalent data. Then, starting from just the temperature and major species, a constrained homogeneous batch reactor calculation gives an approximation of the full thermochemical state at each sample location. Finally, the chemical explosive mode and the heat release rate are calculated from this approximated state and compared to those calculated directly from the simulation data. After successful validation, the approach is applied to Raman/Rayleigh line measurements from laminar counterflow flames, a mildly turbulent lifted flame and turbulent benchmark cases. The results confirm that the reaction zones can be reliably detected and characterized using experimental data. In contrast to other approaches, the presented methodology circumvents uncertainties arising from the use of limited gradient information and offers an alternative to known reaction zone identification methods. Second, this work focuses on the flame structure of partially premixed dimethyl ether (DME) flames. DME flames form significant intermediate hydrocarbons in the reaction zone and are classified as the next more complex fuel candidate in research after methane. To simulate DME combustion processes, accurate predictions by computational combustion models are required. To evaluate such models and to identify appropriate flame regimes, numerical simulations are necessary. Therefore, fully resolved simulations of laminar dimethyl ether flames, defined by different levels of premixing, are performed. Further, the qualitative two-dimensional structures of the partially premixed DME flames are discussed and analyses are carried out at selected slices and compared to each other as well as to experimental data. Further, the flamelet/progress variable (FPV) approach is investigated to predict the partially premixed flame structures of the DME flames. In the context of the FPV approach, a rigorous analysis of the underlying manifold is carried out based on the newly developed regime identification approach and an a priori analysis. The most promising flamelet look-up table is chosen for the fully coupled tabulated chemistry simulations and the results are further compared to the fully resolved simulation data.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden verschiedene Simulationsansätze angewandt um die Hydrodynamik in einem neu entwickelten Wirbelschichtvergaser zu untersuchen. Die Ansätze umfassen a) entdimensionalisierter Ähnlichkeitskennzahlen und empirischer Gleichungen, b) 1D Simulationen mittels ASPEN Plus®, c) 3D CFD Simulationen mittels Ansys Fluent® zur detaillierten Abbildung der zu erwartenden Hydrodynamik. Vor- und Nachteile der jeweiligen Ansätze sowie Klassen von ermittelbaren Simulationsdaten werden diskutiert. Guided waves hold great potential for applications in the field of ultrasonic nondestructive testing. Examples of possible applications are the ultrasonic testing and structural health monitoring of wheelset-axles as used in trains. Depending on the particular type, these axles can be described as either thick cylindrical rods or thick walled hollow cylinders with varying thickness. Wheelset-axles are safety relevant components that have to be inspected on a regular basis. The use of guided waves would allow a full inspection while accessing only the front faces of the axle, thus potentially speeding up the inspection procedure. In order to develop such an inspection technique, however, detailed knowledge of wave propagation through the axle is required. Established mesh-based procedures, like the finite element method, could be used to simulate guided wave propagation in such structures. However, due to the size of the axle itself and the comparatively fine mesh that is dictated by the wavelengths usually applied in ultrasonic testing, these mesh-based procedures would be very expensive in terms of computation times. The multimodal approach seems to be a very promising alternative that can be expected to provide results significantly faster. The multimodal method uses the guided wave modes of a corresponding waveguide with a constant cross-section as basis in which the local sound field at any given position in a waveguide with varying thickness can be expressed. Thereby the numerical effort is reduced to solving the one dimensional differential equations that govern the evolution of the coefficients in the mode spectrum along the waveguide. Once the sound field has been calculated, a time dependence can easily be included, which allows the simulation of pulse propagation through the waveguide. In this thesis, the multimodal approach, as described for the calculation of Lamb-waves in plates with non-constant thickness, is extended to other types of elastic waveguides such as cylindrical rods and thick walled hollow cylinders. For the sake of simplicity, investigations are restricted to axially symmetric wave modes. The results obtained with the multimodal approach are validated against FEM-simulations. It is shown that the multimodal method potentially holds a great advantage in terms of computation time over commercially available software based on the finite element method. Finally, the multimodal method is evaluated with respect to possible future applications on wheelset-axles. Geführte Wellen besitzen ein großes Potential für Anwendungen im Bereich der zerstörungsfreien Ultraschallprüfung. Beispiele möglicher Anwendungen sind die Ultraschallprüfung oder Zustandsüberwachung von Radsatzwellen, wie sie in Zügen verwendet werden. Abhängig vom jeweiligen Typ können diese Radsatzwellen als Vollzylinder oder dickwandige Hohlzylinder beschrieben werden. Radsatzwellen sind sicherheitsrelevante Bauteile, die regelmäßig geprüft werden müssen. Die Verwendung geführter Wellen würde ausgehend von den Stirnflächen eine Prüfung des gesamten Bauteilvolumens ermöglichen. Dieser Umstand kann potentiell verwendet werden um den Prüfprozess zu beschleunigen. Zur Entwicklung eines entsprechenden Prüfverfahrens sind jedoch Kenntnisse über die Details der Ausbreitung geführter Wellen innerhalb der Radsatzwellen notwendig. Etablierte Verfahren, wie die Finite-Elemente-Methode, können für die Simulation der Ausbreitung geführter Wellen in derartigen Strukturen verwendet werden. Aufgrund der Abmessungen der Radsatzwelle, der in der Ultraschallprüfung gebräuchlichen Wellenlängen und der sich daraus ergebenden notwendigen Größe und Anzahl der Elemente, wäre dabei allerdings mit einem großen Zeitaufwand zu rechnen. Der Multimodalansatz scheint eine vielversprechende Alternative darzustellen, welche im Stande ist Simulationen wesentlich schneller durchzuführen. Die Multimodalmethode basiert darauf, das lokale Schallfeld in einem Wellenleiter variierender Dicke in einer Basis von geführten Wellenmoden eines korrespondierenden Wellenleiters konstanter Dicke darzustellen. Der numerische Aufwand reduziert sich dadurch auf die Lösung der eindimensionalen Differenzialgleichungen, welche die Entwicklung der Koeffizienten im Modenspektrum entlang des Wellenleiters beschreiben. Nachdem das Schallfeld bestimmt wurde, kann der Lösung mit geringem Aufwand eine Zeitabhängigkeit hinzugefügt werden, was die Simulation der Ausbreitung von Ultraschallpulsen durch den Wellenleiter ermöglicht. In der vorliegenden Dissertation wird ein Multimodalansatz zur Bestimmung von Lamb-Moden in Platten nicht-konstanter Dicke auf andere Arten elastischer Wellenleiter, wie Vollzylinder und dickwandige Hohlzylinder, erweitert. Zur Vereinfachung der notwendigen Herleitungen wird dabei eine Einschränkung auf axialsymmetrische Moden getroffen. Die Ergebnisse werden durch Vergleich mit FEM-Simulationen validiert. Es wird gezeigt, dass der Multimodalansatz in Bezug auf die benötigte Rechenzeit potentiell große Vorteile gegenüber, auf der Finiten-Elemente Methode basierender, kommerziell verfügbarer Software bietet. Abschließend wird der Multimodalansatz in Hinblick auf mögliche zukünftige Anwendungen in Bezug auf Radsatzwellen bewertet.

Pultrusion ist eine etablierte Herstellungstechnik für die Produktion faserverstärkter Kunststoffprofile. Der Prozess ist durch einen relativ hohen Automatisierungsgrad und geringe Investitions- und Betriebskosten im Vergleich zu den meisten anderen Herstellungstechniken für Faserverbundbauteile gekennzeichnet. Als Standard-Variante wird ein offener, mit flüssigem Harz gefüllten Behälter für die Tränkung der Faserverstärkungsmaterialien eingesetzt. Die Verschärfung von Gesetzen zum Schutz von Mitarbeitern am Arbeitsplatz, die Einführung neuer Harzsysteme mit kurzer Topfzeit (z.B. Polyurethane), sowie gestiegene Qualitätsanforderungen für neue Anwendungen (z.B. im Fahrzeugbau) haben einen Trend eingeleitet, der die Pultrusionstechnologie signifikant verändern soll. Die Auslegung von Pultrusionswerkzeugen mit integrierten bzw. zusammengebauten Werkzeugkavitäten, in die Harz eingespritzt wird, das die Verstärkungsstrukturen unmittelbar vor der Aushärtung tränkt, soll die offene Tränkungstechnik ersetzen. In dieser Dissertation werden Simulationstechniken eingesetzt, um Erkenntnisse bzw. ein besseres Verständnis über die physikalischen Prozesse bei der Pultrusion mit geschlossenen Harzeinspritzung und Imprägnierung zu gewinnen: das Fließen vom flüssigen Harz durch ein komprimiertes Faserpaket, Wärmeübertragung zwischen Material und Werkzeug, und die Aushärtung (verbunden mit Änderungen im Materialzustand und Wärmegenerierung durch die exothermische Reaktion). Um diese Prozesse zu untersuchen, werden Materialkennwerte des Harzsystems (Reaktionskinetik und Veränderung der Viskosität während der Aushärtung) und Faserstrukturen (Kompressibilität und Permeabilität) experimentell ermittelt. Ein geometrisches Modell des Werkzeugs und entsprechende Randbedingungen werden in eine kommerzielle Software numerischer Strömungsmechanik (englisch: Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD) eingepflegt und der Prozess wird simuliert. Ein auf die finite Differenzmethode basiertes Simulationsprogramm wurde entwickelt, um das CFD-Modell zu ergänzen. Die Simulation liefert Druck-, Temperatur-, Viskositäts- und Aushärtegradfelder in der Kavität. Simulationsergebnisse werden mit Prozessparametern aus experimentellen Versuchen abgeglichen, um das Modell zu validieren. Geometrische Details werden parametrisiert, um den Einfluss auf die Prozessbedingungen zu evaluieren. Die Simulationsergebnisse zeigen, dass der in dieser Arbeit verfolgte ganzheitliche Ansatz, d.h. die Kopplung eines thermochemischen Modells und des Strömungsmodells, zum Erzielen realitätsnahen Vorhersagen, zumindest für hochreaktive Harzsysteme erforderlich ist. Eine Modellerweiterung, welche die Ausdehnung der Werkzeugkavität berücksichtigt, wäre hingegen für eine bessere Vorhersage des Druckanstiegs notwendig. Weiterhin, wäre für bestimmten Werkzeuggeometrien, Materialsystem bzw. Prozessfenster ein transienter Ansatz für eine realitätsnahe Vorhersage und für die Evaluierung der Prozessstabilität sinnvoll.

The aim of the study presented here, is to understand and characterize the air puff generated by a non‐contact tonometer (NCT). Therefore, we propose a method to experimental calibrate a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model of an eye examined with a Corvis ST. The time dependence of the nozzle pressure was found to be equal to the pressure measured by a device intern sensor. However, the maximum pressure identified at the nozzle inlet reaches approximately 25 kPa.

This dissertation presents a fully implicit, monolithic finite element solution scheme to effectively solve the governing set of differential algebraic equations of incompressible poroelastodynamics. Thereby, a two-dimensional, biphasic, saturated porous medium model with intrinsically coupled and incompressible solid and fluid constituents is considered. Our schemes are based on some well-accepted CFD techniques, originally developed for the efficient simulation of incompressible flow problems, and characterized by the following aspects: (1) a special treatment of the algebraically coupled volume balance equation leading to a reduced form of the boundary conditions; (2) usage of a higher-order accurate mixed LBBstable finite element pair with piecewise discontinuous pressure for the spatial discretization; (3) application of the fully implicit 2nd-order Crank-Nicolson scheme for the time discretization; (4) use of a special fast multigrid solver of Vanka-type smoother available in FEATFLOW to solve the resulting discrete linear equation system. Furthermore, a new adaptive time stepping scheme combined with Picard iteration method is introduced to solve a non-linear elastic problem with special hyper-elastic model. For the purpose of validation and to expose themerits and benefits of our new solution strategies in comparison to other established approaches, canonical one- and two-dimensional wave propagation problems are solved and a large-scale, dynamic soil-structure interaction problem serves to reveal the efficiency of the special multigrid solver and to evaluate its performance for different formulations.

The present habilitation thesis in theoretical biological physics addresses two central dynamical processes in cells and organisms: (i) active motility and motility control and (ii) self-organized pattern formation. The unifying theme is the nonlinear dynamics of biological function and its robustness in the presence of strong fluctuations, structural variations, and external perturbations. We theoretically investigate motility control at the cellular scale, using cilia and flagella as ideal model system. Cilia and flagella are highly conserved slender cell appendages that exhibit spontaneous bending waves. This flagellar beat represents a prime example of a chemo-mechanical oscillator, which is driven by the collective dynamics of molecular motors inside the flagellar axoneme. We study the nonlinear dynamics of flagellar swimming, steering, and synchronization, which encompasses shape control of the flagellar beat by chemical signals and mechanical forces. Mechanical forces can synchronize collections of flagella to beat at a common frequency, despite active motor noise that tends to randomize flagellar synchrony. In Chapter 2, we present a new physical mechanism for flagellar synchronization by mechanical self-stabilization that applies to free-swimming flagellated cells. This new mechanism is independent of direct hydrodynamic interactions between flagella. Comparison with experimental data provided by experimental collaboration partners in the laboratory of J. Howard (Yale, New Haven) confirmed our new mechanism in the model organism of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas. Further, we characterize the beating flagellum as a noisy oscillator. Using a minimal model of collective motor dynamics, we argue that measured non-equilibrium fluctuations of the flagellar beat result from stochastic motor dynamics at the molecular scale. Noise and mechanical coupling are antagonists for flagellar synchronization. In addition to the control of the flagellar beat by mechanical forces, we study the control of the flagellar beat by chemical signals in the context of sperm chemotaxis. We characterize a fundamental paradigm for navigation in external concentration gradients that relies on active swimming along helical paths. In this helical chemotaxis, the direction of a spatial concentration gradient becomes encoded in the phase of an oscillatory chemical signal. Helical chemotaxis represents a distinct gradient-sensing strategy, which is different from bacterial chemotaxis. Helical chemotaxis is employed, for example, by sperm cells from marine invertebrates with external fertilization. We present a theory of sensorimotor control, which combines hydrodynamic simulations of chiral flagellar swimming with a dynamic regulation of flagellar beat shape in response to chemical signals perceived by the cell. Our theory is compared to three-dimensional tracking experiments of sperm chemotaxis performed by the laboratory of U. B. Kaupp (CAESAR, Bonn). In addition to motility control, we investigate in Chapter 3 self-organized pattern formation in two selected biological systems at the cell and organism scale, respectively. On the cellular scale, we present a minimal physical mechanism for the spontaneous self-assembly of periodic cytoskeletal patterns, as observed in myofibrils in striated muscle cells. This minimal mechanism relies on the interplay of a passive coarsening process of crosslinked actin clusters and active cytoskeletal forces. This mechanism of cytoskeletal pattern formation exemplifies how local interactions can generate large-scale spatial order in active systems. On the organism scale, we present an extension of Turing’s framework for self-organized pattern formation that is capable of a proportionate scaling of steady-state patterns with system size. This new mechanism does not require any pre-pattering clues and can restore proportional patterns in regeneration scenarios. We analytically derive the hierarchy of steady-state patterns and analyze their stability and basins of attraction. We demonstrate that this scaling mechanism is structurally robust. Wir entwickeln hierzu theoretische Beschreibungen für zwei grundlegende biologische Prozesse: (i) die zell-autonome Kontrolle aktiver Bewegung, sowie (ii) selbstorganisierte Musterbildung in Zellen und Organismen. In Kapitel 2, untersuchen wir Bewegungskontrolle auf zellulärer Ebene am Modelsystem von Zilien und Geißeln. Spontane Biegewellen dieser dünnen Zellfortsätze ermöglichen es eukaryotischen Zellen, in einer Flüssigkeit zu schwimmen. Wir beschreiben einen neuen physikalischen Mechanismus für die Synchronisation zweier schlagender Geißeln, unabhängig von direkten hydrodynamischen Wechselwirkungen. Der Vergleich mit experimentellen Daten, zur Verfügung gestellt von unseren experimentellen Kooperationspartnern im Labor von J. Howard (Yale, New Haven), bestätigt diesen neuen Mechanismus im Modellorganismus der einzelligen Grünalge Chlamydomonas. Der Gegenspieler dieser Synchronisation durch mechanische Kopplung sind Fluktuationen. Wir bestimmen erstmals Nichtgleichgewichts-Fluktuationen des Geißel-Schlags direkt, wofür wir eine neue Analyse-Methode der Grenzzykel-Rekonstruktion entwickeln. Die von uns gemessenen Fluktuationen entstehen mutmaßlich durch die stochastische Dynamik molekularen Motoren im Innern der Geißeln, welche auch den Geißelschlag antreiben. Um die statistische Physik dieser Nichtgleichgewichts-Fluktuationen zu verstehen, entwickeln wir eine analytische Theorie der Fluktuationen in einem minimalen Modell kollektiver Motor-Dynamik. Zusätzlich zur Regulation des Geißelschlags durch mechanische Kräfte untersuchen wir dessen Regulation durch chemische Signale am Modell der Chemotaxis von Spermien-Zellen. Dabei charakterisieren wir einen grundlegenden Mechanismus für die Navigation in externen Konzentrationsgradienten. Dieser Mechanismus beruht auf dem aktiven Schwimmen entlang von Spiralbahnen, wodurch ein räumlicher Konzentrationsgradient in der Phase eines oszillierenden chemischen Signals kodiert wird. Dieser Chemotaxis-Mechanismus unterscheidet sich grundlegend vom bekannten Chemotaxis-Mechanismus von Bakterien. Wir entwickeln eine Theorie der senso-motorischen Steuerung des Geißelschlags während der Spermien-Chemotaxis. Vorhersagen dieser Theorie werden durch Experimente der Gruppe von U.B. Kaupp (CAESAR, Bonn) quantitativ bestätigt. In Kapitel 3, untersuchen wir selbstorganisierte Strukturbildung in zwei ausgewählten biologischen Systemen. Auf zellulärer Ebene schlagen wir einen einfachen physikalischen Mechanismus vor für die spontane Selbstorganisation von periodischen Zellskelett-Strukturen, wie sie sich z.B. in den Myofibrillen gestreifter Muskelzellen finden. Dieser Mechanismus zeigt exemplarisch auf, wie allein durch lokale Wechselwirkungen räumliche Ordnung auf größeren Längenskalen in einem Nichtgleichgewichtssystem entstehen kann. Auf der Ebene des Organismus stellen wir eine Erweiterung der Turingschen Theorie für selbstorganisierte Musterbildung vor. Wir beschreiben eine neue Klasse von Musterbildungssystemen, welche selbst-organisierte Muster erzeugt, die mit der Systemgröße skalieren. Dieser neue Mechanismus erfordert weder eine vorgegebene Kompartimentalisierung des Systems noch spezielle Randbedingungen. Insbesondere kann dieser Mechanismus proportionale Muster wiederherstellen, wenn Teile des Systems amputiert werden. Wir bestimmen analytisch die Hierarchie aller stationären Muster und analysieren deren Stabilität und Einzugsgebiete. Damit können wir zeigen, dass dieser Skalierungs-Mechanismus strukturell robust ist bezüglich Variationen von Parametern und sogar funktionalen Beziehungen zwischen dynamischen Variablen. In dieser Dissertation wird die numerische Modellierung des Verfüllvorgangs eines Ringspaltes mit Ringspaltmörtel im Bereich des maschinellen Tunnelbaus untersucht. Ausgehend von dem Arbeitsbereich der Kontinuumsmechanik, wird zur Beschreibung der vorherrschenden Prozesse die Theorie Poröser Medien verwendet. Hierbei kann der Infiltrationsprozess durch die Auswertung partieller lokaler Bilanzgleichungen beschrieben werden. Zusätzlich wird eine statistische Auswertung der Mikrostruktur durchgeführt. Die präsentierten Berechnungsmodelle sind für die Beschreibung von Grenzschichtphänomenen, wie die Entstehung eines Filterkuchens, geeignet. Die Erfassung und numerische Abbildung der natürlichen Prozesse, welche bei der Verfüllung von Ringspaltmörtel im Lockergestein auftreten, führt zu einem tiefergehenden Verständnis der ablaufenden physikalischen Phänomene. Dies kann für eine präzisere Steuerung des Verfüllvorgangs von Ringspaltmörtel im maschinellen Tunnelbau genutzt werden.

The design and optimization of entrained flow gasifiers is conducted more and more via computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A detailed resolution of single coal particles within such simulations is nowadays not possible due to computational limitations. Therefore the coal particle conversion is often represented by simple 0-D models. For an optimization of such 0-D models a precise understanding of the physical processes at the boundary layer and within the particle is necessary. In real gasifiers the particles experience Reynolds numbers up to 10000. However in the literature the conversion of coal particles is mainly regarded under quiescent conditions. Therefore an analysis of the conversion of single particles is needed. Thereto the computational fluid dynamics can be used. For the detailed analysis of single reacting particles under flow conditions a CFD model is presented. Practice-oriented parameters as well as features of the CFD model result from CFD simulations of a Siemens 200MWentrained flow gasifier. The CFD model is validated against an analytical model as well as two experimental data-sets taken from the literature. In all cases good agreement between the CFD and the analytics/experiments is shown. The numerical model is used to study single moving solid particles under combustion conditions. The analyzed parameters are namely the Reynolds number, the ambient temperature, the particle size, the operating pressure, the particle shape, the coal type and the composition of the gas. It is shown that for a wide range of the analyzed parameter range no complete flame exists around moving particles. This is in contrast to observations made by other authors for particles in quiescent atmospheres. For high operating pressures, low Reynolds numbers, large particle diameters and high ambient temperatures a flame exists in the wake of the particle. The impact of such a flame on the conversion of the particle is low. For high steam concentrations in the gas a flame appears, which interacts with the particle and influences its conversion. Furthermore the impact of the Stefan-flow on the boundary layer of the particle is studied. It is demonstrated that the Stefan-flow can reduce the drag coefficient and the Nusselt number for several orders of magnitude. On basis of the CFD results two new correlations are presented for the drag coefficient and the Nusselt number. The comparison between the correlations and the CFD shows a significant improvement of the new correlations in comparison to archived correlations. The CFD-model is further used to study moving single porous particles under gasifying conditions. Therefore a 2-D axis-symmetric system of non-touching tori as well as a complex 3-D geometry based on the an inverted settlement of monodisperse spheres is utilized. With these geometries the influence of the Reynolds number, the ambient temperature, the porosity, the intrinsic surface and the size of the radiating surface is analyzed. The studies show, that the influence of the flow on the particle conversion is moderate. In particular the impact of the flow on the intrinsic transport and conversion processes is mainly negligible. The size of the radiating surface has a similar impact on the conversion as the flow in the regarded parameter range. On basis of the CFD calculations two 0-D models for the combustion and gasification of moving particles are presented. Cyclone separators are popular devices used to filter dust from the emitted flue gases. They are applied as pre-filters in many industrial processes including energy production and grain processing facilities. Increasing computational power and the availability of 3D printers provide new tools for the combination of modeling and experimentation, which necessary for constructing efficient cyclones. Several simulation tools can be run in parallel, e.g., long running CFD simulations can be accompanied by experiments with 3D printers. Furthermore, results from analytical and data-driven models can be incorporated. There are fundamental differences between these modeling approaches: some models, e.g., analytical models, use domain knowledge, whereas data-driven models do not require any information about the underlying processes. At the same time, data-driven models require input and output data, whereas analytical models do not. Combining results from models with different input-output structure is of great interest. This combination inspired the development of a new methodology. An optimization via multimodel simulation approach, which combines results from different models, is introduced. Using cyclonic dust separators (cyclones) as a real-world simulation problem, the feasibility of this approach is demonstrated. Pros and cons of this approach are discussed and experiences from the experiments are presented. Furthermore, technical problems, which are related to 3D-printing approaches, are discussed.

In this work a set of efficient numerical methods for the simulation of particulate flows and virtual prototyping applications are proposed. These methods are implemented as modular components in the FEATFLOW software package which is used as the fluid flow solver. In direct particulate flow simulations the calculation of the hydrodynamic forces acting on the particles is of central importance. For this task acceleration techniques are proposed based on hierarchical spatial partitioning. For arbitrary shaped particles the usage of distance maps to rapidly process the needed geometric information is employed and analyzed. In case of collisions between the particles it is shown how these same structures can be used to efficiently handle the collision broad phase and narrow phase. The computation of collision forces in the proposed particulate flow solving scheme can be handled by several collision models. The used models are based on a constrained-based formulation which leads to a linear complementarity problem (LCP). Another approach is added into the particulate flow solver that is based on the discrete element method (DEM). This approach is suited very well to an Implementation on graphic processing units (GPU) as the particles can be handled independently and thus excellent use of the massive parallel computing capabilities of the GPU can be made. In order to extend the DEM to handle non-spherical particles or rigid bodies, an inner sphere representation of such shapes is used. Furthermore, a mesh adaptation technique to increase the numerical efficiency of the CFD-simulations is shown which is based on Laplacian smoothing with special weights. The proposed techniques are validated in various benchmark configurations or comparisons to experimental data.
