Purpose: To evaluate if fundus photography is useful to study the size of the optic disc in patients with optic nerve head drusen (ONHD). Methods: Cross-sectional study. Fifty-five patients with ONHD confirmed by B-scan echography and 52 patients’ normal controls were studied. Fundus photography was done in all the cases with a telecentric optical system FF450 IR plus from Zeiss with 20° magnification and Visupac measuring system. We measured total optic disc area, vertical and horizontal diameter. Results: Patients with ONHD had smaller optic disc area 2.6 ± 0.55 mm2 (mean ± SD), horizontal diameter (1.68 ± 0.18 mm) and vertical diameter (1.94 ± 0.28 mm) than normal controls (2.93 ± 0.43 mm2, 1.86 ± 0.14 mm and 1.98 ± 0.17 mm, respectively). Abstract Andropogon lateralis is a tall and highly plastic tussock-forming grass native from southern South America. It is a frequent component of Campos and Subtropical highland grasslands that often becomes dominant under lax grazing regimes. The aim of this work was to analyze the response of species diversity and forage production of a natural grassland dominated by A. lateralis to a wide range of grazing intensity. We hypothesized that species diversity and forage production would both peak at the intermediate canopy heights determined by grazing regimes of moderate intensity. A grazing experiment was conducted in a highland grassland with mesothermal humid climate at 922 masl (Atlantic Forest biome, Santa Catarina state, Brazil) that comprised 87 species from 20 families but had 50% of its standing biomass accounted by A. lateralis. Four pre-/post-grazing canopy heights—12/7, 20/12, 28/17, and 36/22 cm (measured on A. lateralis)—were arranged in a complete randomized block design with four replications, and intermittently stocked with beef heifers from October 2015 to October 2017. Andropogon lateralis cover decreased (from 75 to 50%), and species richness increased (15–25 species m−2) as canopy height decreased. Grazing intensity did not affect annual forage production (4.2 Mg DM ha−1). This natural grassland dominated by A. lateralis had a high capacity to adjust to grazing regimes of contrasting intensity, maintaining forage production stable over a wide range of canopy heights. However, to prevent losses in floristic diversity, such grassland should not be grazed at canopy heights higher than 28 cm.

ABSTRACT: The animal performance on pasture is directly correlated to canopy structure since this influences the herbage consumption. This study was evaluated the effects of four pre-grazing canopy heights (12, 20, 28 and 36 cm) of Andropogon lateralis Ness on herbage intake and feeding behavior of steers in a natural grassland under intermittent stocking management, using the same proportion of defoliation (40% reduction in pre-grazing height, i.e., post-grazing heights of 7.2, 12.0, 16.8 and 21.6 cm). The experiment was conducted on a total area of 14,000 m2, divided into sixteen paddocks of 875 m2. Thirty-two steers were used, divided into uniform pairs according to the live weight (LW) at the start of the experiment (244 ± 23.0 kg). Each paddock was subdivided into three plots of identical area; the first two plots were used for the adaptation period and the third for the assessment period. A randomized block design was used with four replicates and two assessment periods. Herbage mass and neutral detergent fiber content increased linearly (P < 0,001) with the increase of pre-grazing canopy heights. In contrast, was not affected by treatments, with mean values of 75 g/kg of dry matter (DM) in the upper stratum and 83 g/kg of DM in lower stratum. The herbage intake was similar between treatments (P = 0.255), averaging 1.78% LW. Grazing time increased linearly in the upper stratum and decreased linearly in the lower stratum with increasing pre-grazing canopy heights. Total time spent grazing, ruminating, and idling did not differ between treatments, with means of 52.6%, 23.0%, and 24.2%, respectively. Pre-grazing canopy heights treatments, based on the predominant species A. lateralis, did not affect the daily herbage intake of steers.

Natural pastures are important ecosystems that both contribute to biodiversity conservation and provide an important source of income, especially for cattle ranchers. While these pastures yield fairly low productivity, they can be improved by increasing soil fertility and introducing species with high productive potentials. In this sense, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of applying limestone and phosphorus, as well as introducing cool-season species with a mixture of species dominated by Schizachyrium tenerum Nees, into a natural pasture in the Catarinense Plateau. The experiment was conducted from January 2010 to December 2013; the treatments consisted of superficial distribution of limestone in proportions of 3.6, 7.2, 11.0, and 14.4 t ha-1, as well as distribution of phosphorus in the form of triple superphosphate in proportions of 35, 70, 105, and 140 kg of P2O5 ha-1. In addition, cool-season species were overseeded. The experiment consisted of a randomized block design with subdivided plots and three replications. Limestone was applied to the main parcel, whereas phosphorus was applied to the subplots. There was no interaction between the levels of limestone and phosphorus. The application of 11.0 t ha-1 of limestone yielded the highest forage production, with 3,932.2 kg of dry matter (DM) ha-1 during the second year. Red clover was the species that best reacted to the additions, with levels of 7.2 and 11.0 t ha-1 over the 4 years. In addition, phosphorus provoked a positive response throughout the experiment. The highest forage production was observed during the second year, with an addition of 140 kg P2O5 ha-1 (4,419.4 kg DM ha-1). Only one-eighth of the recommended amount of limestone (3.6 t ha-1) allowed for the establishment and persistence of the legumes introduced into natural pastures. These additions, associated with increasing levels of phosphorus, yielded linear growth in the production of forage in natural pastures with a mixture of species dominated by Schizachyrium tenerum Nees.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the sample size and area of the quadrats necessary to accurately estimate the forage mass (FM) of a fenced pasture of stargrass (Cynodon nlemfuensis cv. Florico) during the winter. Five metal quadrats were used: a 0.09 m² square (0.30 m side), a 0.25 m2 square (0.50 m side), a 0.25 m2 circle (0.28 m diameter), a 0.5 m2 rectangle (0.5 x 1.0 m), and a 1 m2 square (1.0 m side), each with eight replicates. The size and shape of the quadrats were determined based on cumulative variances to identify combinations that minimized the coefficient of variation (CV). The minimum sample size required to estimate the FM, morphological components and height was established by the CV maximum curvature method. The 0.25 m2 square quadrat (0.5 m side) presented the lowest cumulative CV in estimating the FM and the dry mass of dead material. However, for the estimation of the leaf and stem dry mass, the 1.00 m2 square quadrat (1.00 m side) presented the lowest CV. Using the 0.25 m2 square quadrat, a minimum number of six samples were required for the FM estimation, and eight samples were required for estimating the mean height of the stargrass pasture. Therefore, at least eight samples are recommended to obtain accurate results for the estimation of both variables.

As pastagens naturais representam um importante ecossistema, com contribuições tanto para manutenção da biodiversidade quanto para geração de renda aos produtores, principalmente na pecuária de corte. No entanto, os níveis de produtividade destas pastagens são relativamente baixos, e podem ser melhorados com incrementos em fertilidade do solo e introdução de espécies de elevado potencial produtivo. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de níveis de calcário e fósforo, bem como da introdução de espécies de inverno em uma pastagem natural com predomínio de Schizachyrium tenerum Nees no Planalto Catarinense. O experimento foi conduzido de janeiro de 2010 a dezembro de 2013, e os tratamentos consistiram na distribuição superficial de calcário nas doses de 3,6; 7,2; 11,0 e 14,4 t ha-1; distribuição de fósforo na forma de superfosfato triplo nas doses de 35; 70; 105 e 140 kg de P2O5 ha-1; e a sobressemeadura de espécies de estação fria. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso com parcelas subdivididas e três repetições. Os níveis de calcário foram distribuídos nas parcelas e os de fósforo nas subparcelas. Não houve interação entre os níveis de calcário e fosforo. A aplicação de 11,0 t ha-1 de calcário propocionou a maior produção de forragem, de 3.932,2 kg MS ha-1, no 2º ano. O trevo-vermelho foi a espécie que melhor respondeu ao corretivo, nos níveis de 7,2 a 11,0 t ha-1 durante os 4 anos. O fósforo proporcionou resposta positiva durante todo período experimental. A máxima produção de forragem ocorreu no 2º ano para a dose de 140 kg P2O5 ha-1 (4.419,4 kg MS ha-1). Apenas 1/8 da recomendação de calcário (3,6 t ha-1) permite o estabelecimento e a persistência de leguminosas introduzidas em pastagem natural, dose esta que associada à níveis crescentes de fosforo proporcionam aumentos lineares na produção de forragem em pastagem natural com predomínio de Schizachyrium tenerum Nees.

O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o tamanho e a área da moldura necessários para estimar a massa de forragem (MF) de um pasto vedado de capim-estrela (Cynodon nlenfluensis cv. Florico) durante o inverno. Foram utilizadas cinco molduras metálicas: quadrado de 0,09 m² (0,30 m de lado), quadrado de 0,25 m² (0,50 m de lado), circular de 0,25 m² (0,28 m de raio), retangular de 0,5 m² (0,5 x 1,0 m) e quadrado de 1 m² (1,0 m de lado), cada uma com oito repetições. A dimensão e o formato da moldura foram determinados com base nas variâncias acumuladas para escolha da combinação com menor coeficiente de variação (CV). O número mínimo de amostras necessárias para estimativa da MF, dos componentes morfológicos e da altura foi estabelecido pelo método da máxima curvatura do CV. A moldura de formato quadrado e 0,25 m2 de área (0,5 m de lado) apresentou menor CV acumulado para estimar a MF e a massa seca de material morto. No entanto, para estimativa da massa seca de folha e de colmo, a moldura de formato quadrado e área de 1,00 m2 (1,00 m de lado) apresentou menor CV. Com o uso da moldura de área 0,25 m2 de formato quadrado, foi estabelecido o número mínimo de seis amostras necessárias para estimativa da MF e oito amostras para estimativa da altura média do pasto de capim-estrela. Portanto, indicam-se no mínimo oito amostras para obter resultados acurados da estimativa de ambas variáveis.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate tiller dynamics and population stability of Andropogon lateralis in a natural pasture subjected to grazing height management under intermittent stocking method. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with four treatments and four replicates, in 16 experimental units of 875 m2 each. The treatments consisted of four pre-grazing heights of A. lateralis (12, 20, 28, and 36 cm), which was grazed until its initial height was reduced by 40%. Dynamics of tiller birth and death were evaluated using the marked tiller technique over a period of 18 months, from October 2015 to March 2017. The results indicate that the use of different heights for the management of natural pastures does not affect the stability of the tiller population of A. lateralis and that, regardless of the management strategy, the persistent pathway of this species is mainly based on the maintenance of high-tiller survival rates.

ABSTRACT: Find shade-tolerant species is essential to the success of silvopastoral systems, increasingly frequent in recent years. In legumes, which have potential of biological nitrogen fixation, there is a great lack of knowledge when in shaded environments.The cultivation of four tropical forage (Neonotonia wightii, Pueraria phaseoloides, Macrotyloma axilare and Arachis pintoi) was evaluated when submitted to artificial shade levels (30, 50 and 70% shade) and in full sun during water and drought seasons. The design used was in randomized complete blocks in a sub-divided plot scheme with four replications. In the Water-season the Forage Peanuts had higher forage production in full sun (11 ton ha-1 DM), and under shade did not differ from Perennial Soybean, higher than the others in all levels of shade. In Drought-season the forage production was 61% lower than in Water-season. The highest crude protein levels were reported in Forage Peanuts, Tropical Kudzu and Perennial Soybean, 19.0; 18.3 and 18.2% respectively in the Water-season. Forage Peanuts is a good option for use in silvopastoral systems although there is a small reduction in forage production (average of 23.7%). In general, species of fabaceae showed a greater reduction in forage production in the period of water deficit; however, shading at levels of 30% to 50% contribute to mitigation of water shortage. Although, there is a small reduction in forage production, withexception of perennial soybeans in dry season, it is advisable to use tropical forage legumes in silvopastoral systems, since forage quality is not affected by shade.
