Abstract: International audience; There is a growing interest in on-site, real-time analytical solutions for mining and environmental projects to characterize large areas and/or volumes of raw materials that are sometimes highly heterogeneous in terms of elemental distribution and mineralogy. Several fast and cost-effective methods are used for rapid on-site screening and real-time chemical and mineralogical characterization, such as portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) and X-ray diffraction (pXRD). However, these methods are not always applicable due to limitations in the detection and quantification of light elements (Mg, Al, Si) for pXRF or complex or minor minerals for pXRD, whose results need to be supported by laboratory analysis.This study presents a new methodological approach for in situ rapid chemical and mineralogical characterization of samples, based on the use of a transportable instrument (called ID2B) that allows, in a single acquisition step, a combined XRD-XRF analysis to identify and quantify the chemical elements and their associated minerals. The HI0 harzburgite sample from New Caledonia used to evaluate the data was analyzed in the laboratory (SEM-EDS, EPMA, XRF and XRD) and with the ID2B instrument to highlight the potential of our new methodology. In order to demonstrate the interest of using the ID2B combined XRF-XRD analysis approach directly in the field, where sample preparation is not always easy to implement, this comparison was made on the same sample (HI0), prepared in two different ways, either as a powderized (optimal preparation) or as-sawn (unprepared) sample. After automated processing of the combined XRF-XRD datasets acquired with the ID2B instrument, the chemical elements and mineralogical phases identified on both the powder and as-sawn samples are identical to the laboratory analyses.The chemical proportions calculated from the combined XRF-XRD data sets are also close to the laboratory XRF analysis with relative errors

Abstract: International audience; The study was conducted in the southern part of the lower Strymon valley, in northern Greece, and revealed up to 25 m of fluvio-lacustrine sediments deposited over the last seven millennia. This sedimentary record represents a significant opportunity for high-resolution palaeoenvironmental studies of the period from 6 to 3 ka cal BP linked to land use and climate change. The results of geophysical investigations, multi-proxy sedimentological (grain size, magnetic susceptibility, loss-on-ignition), pollen and NPP analyses, based on high-precision radiocarbon dating enabled reconstruction of past landscapes as well as a comprehensive discussion of anthropogenic responses and their impact on the vegetation cover, especially during periods with well-known Holocene Rapid Climate Change events (5.6, 4.2 and 3.2 ka cal BP). During the 7-5.7 ka cal BP corresponding to the Late and Final Neolithic, wet conditions created an extended lake surrounded by the densely wooded Strymon watershed, followed by a shift to a shallower lake environment that lasted until ca. 4.5 ka cal BP. The continuous presence of anthropogenic taxa suggests the persistence of human activities even in the absence of formally recognized sites, suggesting the relocation of settlements. The first signs of human disturbance of the landscape at regional scale occurred toward 5.2 ka cal BP (onset of the Early Bronze Age). The so-called « 4.2 ka BP event », which coincided with the end of the Early Bronze Age and the transition to the Middle Bronze Age, is divided into three distinct periods (4.35-4.1, 4.1-3.95 and 3.95-3.75 ka cal BP). The first corresponds to gradual aridification before a period with severe dry conditions that marks a tipping point toward wetland contraction. From this period on, diversification, and multiplication of anthropogenic species including Olea, Juglans and Castanea reflect a global trend toward cultural landscapes. The later periods are characterized by dramatic climatic change around 3.2-3 ka cal BP, at the end of Late Bronze Age, and increasing impacts of agro-pastoral activities and forest clearing starting at the beginning of Antiquity, around 2.8 ka cal BP (Thracian period). After the 4.2 ka cal BP event and we suggest that climatic adversity may have acted as a stimulus to innovation and relocation rather than retarding societal development in the region. To conclude, environmental factors in the lower Strymon valley were not sufficient on their own to trigger a social crisis similar to that mentioned in the Middle East.

Abstract: International audience; The surface modification of metal oxides by grafting an organic molecule allows the development of new specific properties on demand. In this work, we demonstrate the modification of the Yttria Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal (Y-TZP), which is a ceramic widely used in dental implantology, by polymer grafting of the surface in a three-steps protocol for tuning the wetting properties. The first step involved the preparation of zirconia pellet by sintering followed by their surface activation. In the second step, the organic initiator bearing a tertiary amine such as the N,N-dimethylamino group capable of initiating a radical photopolymerization reaction, was grafted onto the surface through a bisphosphonic acid functionality. In the last step, two monomers, namely methyl methacrylate and styrene, were photopolymerized on the zirconia surface by blue light irradiation.The chemical steps were monitored and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Wetting properties to different polar and nonpolar liquids and surface energies calculated with the Van Oss theory were found to vary systematically depending on the type of functionalization and grafting. This methodology is very promising for surface tuning of the dental ceramic.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a novel continuous-discrete (sampled data) time neural network (NSNN) observer for nonlinear systems. It can therefore be applied to systems with a high degree of non-linearity with no prior knowledge of the system dynamics. The proposed observer is a three-layer feedforward neural network that has been intensively trained using the error backpropagation learning algorithm, which includes an e-modification term to ensure robustness of the observer. A structure of the output predictor with a corrective term is added in the structure of the NN observer to overcome the problem of discrete time measurement. Simulations using MATLAB and CarSim are illustrated to demonstrate the performance of the proposed state observer strategy to reconstruct the state variables and parameters of a vehicle system.

Abstract: We have investigated the interface dislocations in InxGa1−xN/GaN heterostructures (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.20) using diffraction contrast analysis in a transmission electron microscope. The results indicate that the structural properties of interface dislocations depend on the indium composition. For lower indium composition (up to x = 0.09), we observed that the screw-type dislocations and dislocation half-loops occurred at the interface, even though the former do not contribute toward elastic relaxation of the misfit strain in the InGaN layer. With the increase in indium composition (0.13 ≤ x ≤ 0.17), in addition to the network of screw-type dislocations, edge-type misfit dislocations were generated, with their density gradually increasing. For higher indium composition (0.18 ≤ x ≤ 0.20), all of the interface dislocations are transformed into a network of straight misfit dislocations along the direction, leading to partial relaxation of the InGaN epilayer. The presence of dislocation half-loops may be explained by a slip on basal plane; formation of edge-type misfit dislocations are attributed to punch-out mechanism.

Abstract: The coordinating role of nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in cellular function is undeniable. Evidence indicates that this transcription factor exerts massive regulatory functions in multiple signaling pathways concerning redox homeostasis and xenobiotics, macromolecules, and iron metabolism. Being the master regulator of antioxidant system, Nrf2 controls cellular fate, influencing cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, resistance to therapy, and senescence processes, as well as infection disease success. Because Nrf2 is the key coordinator of cell defence mechanisms, dysregulation of its signaling has been associated with carcinogenic phenomena and infectious and age-related diseases. Deregulation of this cytoprotective system may also interfere with immune response. Oxidative burst, one of the main microbicidal mechanisms, could be impaired during the initial phagocytosis of pathogens, which could lead to the successful establishment of infection and promote susceptibility to infectious diseases. There is still a knowledge gap to fill regarding the molecular mechanisms by which Nrf2 orchestrates such complex networks involving multiple pathways. This review describes the role of Nrf2 in non-pathogenic and pathogenic cells.

Abstract: International audience; Endometriosis is a painful gynecological disorder that affects many women. Constant treatments and contraception changes affect women looking for solutions to treat and limit the problems caused by endometriosis. The current narrative review discusses the effects of physical activity on the management, pain, and quality of life in patients with endometriosis. Findings suggest that body awareness practices such as Hatha yoga, the Jacobson method, and progressive muscle relaxation reduce pain and stress and improve the quality of life associated with endometriosis. It also highlights the current knowledge gap on available evidence and future research. Moreover, care must be taken when considering patients’ physical abilities and goals and avoiding intense physical activities. The forms of endometriosis and its symptoms vary from one woman to another, so it is important to perform studies with various nonmedicinal or surgical techniques. It is important to continue randomized controlled trials to obtain more data on the benefits of physical activity in women with endometriosis and also to identify what types of activities could be beneficial to combat pain symptoms and improve the daily lives of women with endometriosis.

Abstract: Atom probe tomography (APT) is a powerful three-dimensional nanoanalyzing microscopy technique considered key in modern materials science. However, progress in the spatial reconstruction of APT data has been rather limited since the first implementation of the protocol proposed by Bas et al. in 1995. This paper proposes a simple semianalytical approach to reconstruct multilayered structures, i.e., two or more different compounds stacked perpendicular to the analysis direction. Using a field evaporation model, the general dynamic evolution of parameters involved in the reconstruction of this type of structure is estimated. Some experimental reconstructions of different structures through the implementation of this method that dynamically accommodates variations in the tomographic reconstruction parameters are presented. It is shown both experimentally and theoretically that the depth accuracy of reconstructed APT images is improved using this method. The method requires few parameters in order to be easily usable and substantially improves atom probe tomographic reconstructions of multilayered structures.

Abstract: International audience; Mass mortality events affecting the blue mussels Mytilus edulis have been observed in France since 2014. The DNA of the bacterium Francisella halioticida, reported as pathogen of giant abalone (Haliotis gigantea) and Yesso scallop (Mizuhopecten yessoensis) has been detected recently in mussels from areas suffering mortalities. Isolation of this bacterium was attempted from individuals collected during mortality events. Identification was performed by16S rRNA gene sequencing, real-time specific PCR and MALDI-ToF using spectra produced from the strain 8472-13A isolated from diseased Yesso scallop in Canada. Five isolates were identified as F. halioticida by real-time specific PCR and 16S rRNA sequencing. MALDI-ToF allowed the direct identification of four isolates(FR22a,b,c,d) which had 100% identity on the 16S rRNA gene with the known strains. On the other hand, one isolate (FR21) was not recognized by MALDI-ToF and had 99.9% identity on the 16S rRNA gene. The FR22 isolates showed difficult growth and required media optimization, which was not the case with the FR21 isolate. For these reasons, it was hypothesized that two type strains are present on French coasts, named FR21 and FR22. The FR21 isolate was selected for phenotypic analysis (growth curve, biochemical characteristics, electron microscopy), phylogenetic analysis and an experimental challenge.This isolate showed distinct differences compared to published F. halioticida strains, both at phenotypic and genotypic levels. Experimental infections of adult mussels led to 36% mortalities in 23 days following intramuscular injection with 3 x 107 CFU while a lower dose (3 x 103 CFU) did not lead to significant mortalities. In the context of this study, the strain FR21 was not virulent towards adult mussels.

Abstract: Background: While intravesical injections of botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT-A) are currently recommended for patients experiencing refractory neurogenic overactive bladder and/or detrusor overactivity (OAB/DO), it is unclear how much this therapy is effective and sustainable in the long-term in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Objectives: To assess the mid-term continuation rate of BoNT-A injections to treat neurogenic OAB/DO in MS patients and to investigate MS-specific risk factors for discontinuation. Methods: This retrospective study involved 11 French university hospital centers. All MS patients who received BoNT-A to treat neurogenic OAB/DO between 2008 and 2013 and were subsequently followed up for at least 5 years were eligible. Results: Of the 196 MS patients included, 159 (81.1%) were still under BoNT-A 5 years after the first injection. The combination of the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS < 6 or ⩾ 6) and of the MS type (relapsing–remitting vs progressive) predicted the risk of discontinuation. This risk was 5.5% for patients with no risk factor, whereas patients presenting with one or two risk factors were 3.3 and 5.7 times more likely to discontinue, respectively. Conclusion: BoNT-A is a satisfying mid-term neurogenic OAB/DO therapy for most MS patients. Combining EDSS and MS type could help predict BoNT-A discontinuation.

Abstract: International audience; Background The identification of patients at high risk of a disabling disease course would be invaluable in guiding initial therapy in Crohn’s disease (CD). Our objective was to evaluate a combination of clinical, serological, and genetic factors to predict complicated disease course in pediatric-onset CD. Methods Data for pediatric-onset CD patients, diagnosed before 17 years of age between 1988 and 2004 and followed more than 5 years, were extracted from the population-based EPIMAD registry. The main outcome was defined by the occurrence of complicated behavior (stricturing or penetrating) and/or intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. Lasso logistic regression models were used to build a predictive model based on clinical data at diagnosis, serological data (ASCA, pANCA, anti-OmpC, anti-Cbir1, anti-Fla2, anti-Flax), and 369 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms. Results In total, 156 children with an inflammatory (B1) disease at diagnosis were included. Among them, 35% (n = 54) progressed to a complicated behavior or an intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. The best predictive model (PREDICT-EPIMAD) included the location at diagnosis, pANCA, and 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms. This model showed good discrimination and good calibration, with an area under the curve of 0.80 after correction for optimism bias (sensitivity, 79%, specificity, 74%, positive predictive value, 61%, negative predictive value, 87%). Decision curve analysis confirmed the clinical utility of the model. Conclusions A combination of clinical, serotypic, and genotypic variables can predict disease progression in this population-based pediatric-onset CD cohort. Independent validation is needed before it can be used in clinical practice.

Abstract: International audience; Among the various alternatives to fossil energies, microalga-based fuels are promising solutions. Thanks to their ability to grow under harsh conditions and trap industrial exhaust gases, these microalgae can help reduce global warming effects. One efficient way to process this feedstock is to use hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) which leads to an intermediate bio-crude and a residual solid. This bio-crude can be further refined to produce usable biofuel by eliminating problematic heteroatoms such as nitrogen, oxygen, and metals. The residual solid, which can represent 50 % in mass is, however not useable nowadays. To valorize this insoluble fraction, the present work is focused on its molecular characterization and, in particular, on its metal content. Metals are particularly problematic for downstream processes when they are in an organic form such as porphyrins as they destroy catalysts. Identification and speciation of these metal organic species is thus needed. However, these analyses are challenging because of the high molecular diversity of these samples. Here, complementarity between electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and FTICR-MS, which is a state-of-the-art mass spectrometer, was used for the speciation of copper elements in the residual solid. A signal characteristic of a copper surrounded by four symmetric nitrogen atoms was observed in EPR, suggesting porphyrinic structures. The dynamic range of FTICR-MS broadband analyses was not sufficient to access the isotopic fine structure of the copper porphyrins. Continuous accumulation of selected ions analyses (CASI) was thus, performed to boost the dynamic range of the mass spectrometer in a narrower mass range allowed to confirm for the first time the presence of copper porphyrins in a residual solid of bio-crude. Different families of copper porphyrins were observed, and putative structures were proposed.

Abstract: International audience; In the Combinatorial Substrate Epitaxy (CSE) approach, a thin film is grown at high temperature on a polycrystalline substrate. Those substrates induce a local film epitaxy on each substrate grain and an overall polycrystalline character on the macroscopic scale. Compared to single-crystalline films, this approach provides the possibility to introduce, in a controlled way, grain boundaries providing new functionalities. Therefore, controlling the microstructure and grain size of the substrates is an important step for tuning the film properties. In this paper, a complete study of the granular growth of the standard substrate material for the deposition of perovskite thin films, SrTiO3, has been carried out with different isothermal cycles highlighting the grain growth mechanisms. From these results, we are able to predict the sintering thermal cycle necessary for targeting very precisely a desired grain size and the corresponding physical properties. Indeed, highly restraint physical properties specifications are needed for advanced electronic applications. Since a classic granular growth model was used, this approach can be generalized to the broad family of oxides.

Abstract: International audience; The possibility of anodic oxidation of SiC surfaces by a strong, local electric field applied during Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) under ambient conditions is an interesting method to achieve nanopatterning of SiC, but is also a side-effect to be well characterized and controlled during this kind of AFM measurements if used to determine the local electric properties. In this contribution, we will analyze the local electric fields by finite element simulations in order to quantify the effect of the presence of a water meniscus and of an oxide layer on the SiC surface. Furthermore, we will experimentally highlight the strong influence of the local doping on the anodization, leading to the formation of thicker oxide layers at the location of highly doped SiC. Therefore, the location of these areas can be determined by a simple AFM topography scan after the application of a high field, allowing to detect highly doped SiC areas in complex structures as for example SiC MOSFETs.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Anal ulcerations are frequently observed in Crohn's disease (CD). However, their natural history remains poorly known, especially in pediatric-onset CD.Methods: All patients with a diagnosis of CD before the age of 17 years between 1988 and 2011 within the population-based registry EPIMAD were followed retrospectively until 2013. At diagnosis and during follow-up, the clinical and therapeutic features of perianal disease were recorded. An adjusted time-dependent Cox model was used to evaluate the risk of evolution of anal ulcerations towards suppurative lesions.Results: Among the 1,005 included patients (females, 450 (44.8%); median age at diagnosis 14.4 years (IQR, 12.0-16.1)), 257 (25.6%) had an anal ulceration at diagnosis. Cumulative incidence of anal ulceration at 5 and 10 years from diagnosis was 38.4% (CI95%, 35.2-41.4) and 44.0% (CI95%, 40.5-47.2), respectively. Abstract: International audience; Two series of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBHV) and poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) with different amounts of hydroxyvalerate (HV) and hydroxyhexanoate (HHx) units are compared. The influence of chemical composition on the molecular mobility in quenched samples is discussed, as well as the consequences on the aptitude to crystallize and the microstructures developed during cold-crystallization. In both quenched PHBHV and PHBHHx, Tg decreases as the content of comonomer unit increases. The HHx units (propyl side-groups) are better molecular spacers and produce a stronger Tg shift as compared to the HV units (ethyl side-groups). Copolymerization has no striking effect on the width of the glass transition and the cooperativity length in quenched samples, but in cold-crystallized samples the glass transition is dramatically broadened. When the fully amorphous copolymers are heated from the glassy state to room temperature, crystallization occurs but is largely disrupted, suggesting that the molecular environment in the amorphous phase is significantly changed. The HHx units, which are excluded from the host crystals, delay and slow down the crystallization kinetics in a stronger way as compared to the HV units, which can partially co-crystallize. The obtained crystalline phases are prone to reorganization and the residual amorphous phases appear to have strong differences in composition and large density fluctuations. A practical consequence is that microstructures with different coupling between phases, and thus different properties and stability over time, can be obtained by controlling the nature and content of the comonomer units.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this systematic review was to examine the effects of foot orthoses on gait kinematics and low back pain (LBP) in individuals with leg length inequality (LLI). This review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines and has been undertaken in the PubMed-NCBI, EBSCO Host, Cochrane Library, and ScienceDirect databases. Inclusion criteria were the analysis of kinematic parameters during walking or LBP before and after foot orthosis use in patients with LLI. Ultimately, five studies were retained. We extracted the following information: study identity, patients, type of foot orthosis, duration of orthopedic treatment, protocols, methods, and data to assess gait kinematics and LBP. The results showed that insoles seem to reduce pelvic drop and active compensations of the spine when LLI is moderate/severe. However, insoles do not always seem to be efficient in improving gait kinematics in patients with low LLI. All of the studies noted a significant reduction of LBP with use of insoles. Consequently, although these studies revealed no consensus on whether and how insoles affect gait kinematics, the orthoses seemed helpful in relieving LBP.

Abstract: International audience; Advances in the melt-growth synthesis technique for preparing superconducting REBaCuO bulks allow the production and commercialisation of single crystals with a diameter of about 10 cm. This is in close agreement with the development of new applications such as electric motors where superconducting bulks are used as trapped field magnets or magnetic screens [1], [2]. It is then crucial to determine the superconducting properties such as critical temperature, critical current density and irreversible magnetic field, which is usually done using MPMS-SQUID on a millimetre size sample. In this study, the characterisation of a 10 cm wide commercial bulk machined for use as a magnetic shield is presented, see Fig. 1. 24 orthorhombic samples were extracted at different positions from the centre of the bulk, prepared and measured on a 14 T MPMS with a VSM head. A comparison of the superconducting properties of each sample will be presented together with the trapped field measurements performed on 10 other wide REBaCuO bulks. This will provide an opportunity to discuss the state of the art of this technology and its possible future development and will highlight the need to measure superconducting properties in different positions. Abstract: International audience; We follow the assumption that the dilatational response of glassy polymers can be characterized by a back-stress type analog that includes a thermal expansion for each elastic component and with a viscosity that is dependent on the expansion of the elastic back-stress component. To this, we add the assumption of an unloaded equilibrium temperature that correlates to the past processing through the viscous flow. After setting this in a thermodynamically consistent structure, elastic, elastic back-stress, thermal expansion, back-stress thermal expansion, heat capacity, and viscous damping are evaluated using existing experiments for the response of polycarbonate over the glassy and rubbery ranges. For the demonstration, this is done entirely using a WLF shift factor that is augmented to include, in addition, back strain superposition. We then examine the resulting model under different thermal and mechanical loadings that have the material passing through the glass transition.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Anti-TNF agents are the first biologic treatment option in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The long-term effectiveness of this strategy at the population level is poorly known, particularly in pediatric-onset IBD.Methods: All patients diagnosed with Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC) before the age of 17 between 1988 and 2011 in the EPIMAD population-based registry were followed retrospectively until 2013. Among patients treated with anti-TNF, the cumulative probabilities of anti-TNF failure defined by primary failure, loss of response (LOR) or intolerance were evaluated. Factors associated with anti-TNF failure were investigated by a Cox model.Results: Among a total of 1,007 patients with CD and 337 patients with UC, respectively 481 (48%) and 81 (24%) were treated with anti-TNF. Median age at anti-TNF initiation was 17.4 years (IQR, 15.1-20.9). Median duration of anti-TNF therapy was 20.4 months (IQR, 6.0-59.9). In CD, the probability of failure of 1st line anti-TNF at 1, 3 and 5 years was respectively 30.7%, 51.3% and 61.9% for infliximab and 25.9%, 49.3% and 57.7% for adalimumab (p = 0.740). In UC, the probability of failure of 1st line anti-TNF therapy was respectively 38.4%, 52.3% and 72.7% for infliximab and 12.5% for these 3 timepoints for adalimumab (p = 0.091). The risk of failure was maximal in the first year of treatment and LOR was the main reason for discontinuation. Female gender was associated with LOR (HR, 1.48; 95%CI 1.02-2.14) and with anti-TNF withdrawal for intolerance in CD (HR, 2.31; 95%CI 1.30-4.11) and disease duration (≥ 2 y vs. < 2 y) was associated with LOR in UC (HR, 0.37; 95%CI 0.15-0.94) in multivariate analysis. Sixty-three (13.5%) patients observed adverse events leading to termination of treatment (p = 0.57). No death, cancer or tuberculosis was observed while the patients were under anti-TNF treatment.Conclusion: In a population-based study of pediatric-onset IBD, about 60% in CD and 70% in UC experienced anti-TNF failure within 5 years. Loss of response account for around two-thirds of failure, both for CD and UC.

Abstract: International audience; Plasmonic hyperdoped Si nanocrystals embedded in silica synthesized via a combination of sequential low energy ion implantation and rapid thermal annealing. We show that phosphorus dopants are incorporated into the nanocrystal cores at concentrations up to six times higher than P solid solubility in bulk Si by combining 3D mapping with atom probe tomography and analytical transmission electron microscopy. We shed light on the origin of nanocrystal growth at high P doses, which we attribute to Si recoiling atoms generated in the matrix by P implantation, which likely increase Si diffusivity and feed the Si nanocrystals. We show that dopant activation enables partial nanocrystal surface passivation that can be completed by forming gas annealing. Such surface passivation is a critical step in the formation of plasmon resonance, especially for small nanocrystals. We find that the activation rate in these small doped Si nanocrystals is the same as in bulk Si under the same doping conditions.

Abstract: Technical improvements at the end of the Bronze Age led to the rise of a 1rst generation of major sea powers around the Mediterranean Sea, such as Etruria in modern Italy. The Etruscan coast was the fringed by a series of large lagoons. Only one survives today: the lagoon of Orbetello. The lagoon is preserved by two subparallel sand spits that connect former Argentario island to mainland Italy, as situation that today protects it from rapid infilling. A third sand spit, in the middle of the lagoon, hosts the Etruscan city of Orbetello. Today, three canals connect the lagoon to the sea. A massive phase of eutrophication driven by the ingress of fertilizers has plagued the lagoon in late 20th Century. Eutrophication at times has spurred fish and bird kills, and the release of mercury in the water column. Major contingency plans have been implemented to fight off eutrophication, with various success. However little is known of the lagoon management and the evolution of Orbetello before the 17th century CE. Nonetheless, the wealth of the city and the health of its lagoon have been tightly related during the past three millennia. To track this coevolution, a large team of researcher has been assembled to conduct an analysis of the lagoon sediments using XRF scanning of cored sediments, SMIR, Rock Eval, hyperspectral imaging of chromatic pigments, analysis of mercury and phosphorus content, ostracods and pollen assemblages, to document the links between sediment facies, eutrophication and salinity crises, as a result of successive phases of rise and demise of lagoon management over the past three millennia. Here, we focus on the sub-bottom imaging conducted in the very shallow (< 1.5m) waters of this extensive (30 km2) lagoon. The Exail Echoes 10 000 sub-bottom profiler reveals individual layers that can be traced across the lagoon, allowing stratigraphic correlations between cores, and highlighting the environmental significance of the sedimentary facies. Acoustic imaging using a 3.5 kHz Chirp systems from Exail (Haliotis R/V) was conducted offshore to document the architecture of the sand spits protecting the lagoon. The architecture of the deposits, 14C, OSL, and U-Th dating reveal that the lagoon results from the drowning of strandplains that started forming on both side of the older, central sand spit, at the end of the postglacial transgression. Drowning accompanied the final rise in sea level over the past 6.5 ka, forming two lagoons on both sides of the central spit. These initial lagoons eventually coalesced after drowning the central sand spit. Continuation of the lagoon level rise since Antiquity led to the flooding of Bronze Age, Etruscan and Roman settlements. Sub-bottom imaging in the lagoon reveals buried structures possibly used for navigation and salinity control. Sedimentation is marked by an alternation of black, shelly organic silty clays and decimeter-thick layers of broken shells. Radiocarbon dating indicates that the cores capture up to five millennia of sedimentation, with a sharp decrease in sedimentation rates four millennia ago.

Abstract: International audience; The dislocation configurations of a Ti2AlC-MAX phase deformed under severe plastic deformation by surface mechanical attrition treatment have been analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. Results show that the microstructure of the deformed Ti2AlC sample is composed of numerous 〈a〉-dislocations, which interact with each other notably with dipolar configurations. In addition, we report here 〈a〉-dislocation dissociations in the basal plane with a dissociation distance of approximately 20 nm, following the reaction 1/3 〈21 ̅1 ̅0〉⇔1/3 〈11 ̅00〉+1/3 〈101 ̅0〉. Finally, strong evidence of zonal dislocations is reported. These original results are discussed in the context of the fundamental deformation mechanisms of nanolayered ternary alloys.

Abstract: International audience; Catalytic dehydrogenation of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC), such as formic acid (FAc), is considered as a promising approach to safely store and easily transport hydrogen at ambient conditions. Generally, this process suffers from low activity, low reaction selectivity, low stability of the catalysts and/or the use of noble-metal based catalysts. In this study, a highly efficient CuFe$_2$O$_4$-based photocatalyst is reported for the photocatalytic dehydrogenation of FAc under visible light at room temperature and under continuous gas flow. The effects of various factors such as composition of the catalysts and thermal pretreatment are investigated along a series of samples. The synthesis, dispersion, oxidation states, photo-electrochemical properties and performances of these materials were investigated in details. A synergetic effect, with relatively high dehydrogenation selectivity (77% with 6.6 mmol.g$^{-1}$ .h$^{-1}$ of H$_2$ production) is obtained on the copper-rich samples without any significant deactivation for two cycles of 20h/cycle. This study opens up a new route to design new Cu-based photocatalysts as cost-effective materials for visible-light driven photocatalytic dehydrogenation of FAc at room temperature.

Abstract: Background Students are a vulnerable group for the indirect impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly their mental health. This paper examined the cross-national variation in students’ depressive symptoms and whether this can be related to the various protective measures implemented in response to the initial stage of the COVID-19 outbreak. Methods Student data stem from the COVID-19 International Student Well-being Study, covering 26 countries during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Country-level data on government responses to the COVID-19 pandemic were retrieved from the Oxford COVID-19 Tracker. Multilevel analyses were performed to estimate the impact of the containment and economic support measures on students’ depressive symptoms (n = 78 312). Results School and workplace closures, and stay-at-home restrictions were positively related to students’ depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic, while none of the economic support measures significantly related to depressive symptoms. Countries’ scores on the index of these containment measures explained 1.5% of the cross-national variation in students’ depressive symptoms (5.3%). This containment index’s effect was stable, even when controlling for the economic support index, students’ characteristics, and countries’ epidemiological context and economic conditions. Conclusions Our findings raise concerns about the potential adverse effects of existing containment measures (especially the closure of schools and workplaces and stay-at-home restrictions) on students’ mental health.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Fatigue is commonly reported by patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but the determinants of IBD-related fatigue have yet to be determined.Aims: To identify the factors associated with fatigue in a large population of patients with IBD.Patients and methods: Fatigue and nine other IBD-related disability dimensions were assessed in a cohort of 1704 consecutive patients with IBD using the IBD-disk questionnaire in a cross-sectional survey of 42 French and Belgian centers. Fatigue and severe fatigue were defined as energy subscores >5 and >7, respectively. Determinants of fatigue were assessed using univariate and multivariate analyses (odds ratios (ORs) are provided with 95% confidence intervals).Results: The prevalence rates of fatigue and severe fatigue were 54.1% and 37.1%, respectively. Both fatigue and severe fatigue were significantly higher in patients with active disease than in patients with inactive disease (64.9% vs. 44.7% and 47.4% vs. 28.6%, respectively; p40 years (OR=0.71 [0.54-0.93]), female sex (OR=1.48 [1.13-1.93]), IBD-related sick leave (OR=1.61 (1.19-2.16]), and joint pain (OR=1.60 [1.17-2.18]), abdominal pain (OR=1.78 [1.29-2.45]), regulating defecation (OR=1.67 [1.20-2.32]), education and work (OR=1.96 [1.40-2.75]), body image (OR=1.38 [1.02-1.86]), sleep (OR=3.60 [2.66-4.88]) and emotions (OR=3.60 [2.66-4.88]) subscores > 5.Conclusion: Determinants of fatigue are not restricted to IBD-related factors but also include social factors, sleep, and emotional disturbances, thus supporting a holistic approach to IBD patient care.

Abstract: Electrospun nanofibers have emerged as a new class of materials that combines both lightweight and compelling mechanical properties, promising a new area of less expensive and more efficient materials to be used in a wide range of applications. However, the structure-properties aspect of nanofibers has not been fully elucidated due to difficulties associated with their nanostructunanofibre, relaxation structurale, structure polymorphique, calorimétrie différentielle à balayage rapidere. The aim of this research is to contribute to the understanding of a particular feature of nanofibers which is the molecular orientation, a feature that is generally mentioned to explain the properties of electrospun fibers, by the study of the polyamide 6 (PA6) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber mats. This study was conducted using spectroscopic techniques and thermal techniques. The Fast Scanning Calorimetry (FSC) allowed to trace the signature of molecular orientation in PAN nanofiber mats by the investigation of their structural relaxation kinetics, that was found to be slower as nanofibers diameters decrease. The study of the crystalline structure of PA6 nanofiber mats revealed the predominance of a polymorphic crystalline conformation and its higher thermal stability for thinner nanofibers, which illustrated the tunability of the nanofibers crystalline structure when varying their processing parameters.; Les nanofibres électrofilées représentent une nouvelle classe de matériaux combinant à la fois légèreté et propriétés mécaniques exceptionnelles ayant un énorme potentiel d’application dans plusieurs domaines. Cependant, l'aspect structure-propriétés des nanofibres n'est pas encore maîtrisé en raison des difficultés liées à leur structure nanométrique. L’objectif de ce travail est de contribuer à la compréhension d’une caractéristique particulière des nanofibres qui est l’orientation macromoléculaire, un critère généralement cité quand il s’agit des propriétés des nanofibres, par l’étude des mats de nanofibres en polyamide 6 (PA6) et polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Cette étude a été menée à l'aide de techniques spectroscopiques thermiques. La calorimétrie différentielle à balayage rapide (FSC) a permis de sonder la signature de l'orientation macromoléculaire dans les mats de nanofibres de PAN par l'étude de leur cinétique de relaxation structurale, qui s'est avérée plus lente lorsque le diamètre des nanofibres diminue. L'étude de la structure cristalline des mats de nanofibres de PA6 a révélé la prédominance d'une conformation cristalline polymorphe avec une meilleure stabilité thermique pour les nanofibres les plus fines.

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to develop high-pass (HP) negative group delay (NGD) investigation based on three-port lumped circuit. The main particularity of the proposed three-port passive topology is the consideration of only a single circuit element represented by a capacitor. Design/methodology/approach The methodology of the paper is to consider the S-matrix equivalent model derived from admittance matrix approach. So, an S-matrix equivalent model of a three-port circuit topology is established from admittance matrix approach. The frequency-dependent basic expressions are explored to perform the HP-NGD analysis. Then, the existence condition of HP-NGD function type is analytically demonstrated. The specific characteristics and synthesis equations of HP-NGD circuit with respect to the desired optimal NGD value are established. Findings After computing the frequency expressions to perform the HP-NGD analysis, this study demonstrated the existence condition of HP-NGD function type analytically. The validity of the HP-NGD theory is verified by a prototype of three-port circuit. The proof-of-concept (POC) single capacitor three-port circuit presents an NGD response and characteristics from analytical calculation and simulation is in very good correlation. Originality/value An innovative theory of HP-NGD three-port circuit is studied. The proposed HP-NGD topology is constituted by only a single capacitor. After the topological description, the S-matrix model is established from the Y-matrix by means of Kirchhoff voltage law and Kirchhoff current law equations. A POC of single capacitor three-port circuit was designed and simulated with a commercial tool. Then, a prototype with a surface-mounted device component was fabricated and tested. As expected, simulation and measurement results in very good agreement with the calculated model show the feasibility of the HP-NGD behavior. Abstract: International audience; As building blocks of multifunctional materials involving coupling at the nanoscale, highly doped semiconductor nanocrystals are of great interest for potential applications in nanophotonics. In this work, we investigate the plasmonic properties of highly doped Si nanocrystals embedded in a silica matrix. These materials are obtained by evaporation of heavily Phosphorus-doped SiO/SiO2 multilayers in a ultrahigh vacuum chamber followed by rapid thermal annealing. For P contents between 0.7 and 1.9 at%, structural investigations at the nanoscale give clear evidence that P atoms are mainly located in the core of Si nanocrystals with concentrations reaching up to 10 at%, i.e. well beyond the solid solubility limit of P in bulk Si. Alloying and formation of SiP nanoparticles is observed for P contents exceeding 4 at% in the multilayer. Infrared absorption measurements give evidence of a localized surface plasmon resonance located in the 3 to 6 µm range. A core-shell structure was used to model Si nanocrystals embedded in a silica matrix. Based on the Mie theory and the Drude model, both the mobility and the free charge carrier density were extracted from the simulation, with values reaching 27 cm 2 V-1 s-1 and 2.3×10 20 cm-3 , respectively. This results in a dopant activation rate of about 8 %.

Abstract: International audience; Aim: To compare transanal irrigation with conservative bowel management for the treatment of bowel dysfunction in Spina bifida (SB) patients.Methods: Patients with SB and bowel dysfunction were randomly assigned to receive either transanal irrigation or conservative bowel management. The effectiveness of the treatment was defined as a decrease of 4 points in the neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) score at week 10. Data on incontinence (Cleveland scores; Jorge-Wexner [JW]) and constipation (Knowles-Eccersley-Scott Symptom Constipation Score [KESS]) were recorded at 10 and 24 weeks after inclusion. Data were analysed on an intention-to-treat basis.Results: A total of 34 patients were randomised: 16 patients to conservative bowel management and 18 patients to transanal irrigation. A total of 19/31 (61%) patients improved at week 10, 13 (76%) in the transanal irrigation group versus six (43%) in the conservative group (p = 0.056). In the irrigation group, the decrease in NBD score was -6.9 (-9.9 to -4.02) versus -1.9 (-6.5 to -2.8) in the conservative group (p = 0.049 in univariate and p = 0.004 in multivariate analysis). The NBD, Cleveland (JW and KESS) and Rosenberg scores were significantly lower in the transanal irrigation group than in the conservative bowel management group at week 10.Conclusions: This prospective, randomised, controlled, multicentre study in adult patients with SB suggests that transanal irrigation may be more effective than conservative bowel management.

Abstract: International audience; Additive Manufacturing is a powerful process to build complex geometry. Besides the numerous process parameters influencing the mechanical part performances, others parameters related to the initial powder feedstock or component machining are of most importance. In this study, the combined effect of a wide particle size distribution, surface machining and stress-relief heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties (tension and fatigue) of a stainless steel AISI 316L, produced by laser powder bed fusion, is investigated. In order to correctly investigate those parameters separately, the netshape/machined character of the sample, alongside with the heat treatment is studied for two kinds of powder having different particle size distributions, i.e, narrow and widely spread. Results show that a large spread of particle size is only slightly detrimental to the fatigue life, in particular in high cycle conditions due to a larger porosity related to a weakly more uneven particle spatial distribution in the bed. Nevertheless, this effect is of a second order compared to machining or heat treatments which greatly affect the mechanical behaviour. Surface machining and moderate heat treatment are then the best post-operational steps to increase the fatigue life in high cycle fatigue conditions independently of the particle size distribution. Results are discussed in terms of defects, microstructural modifications, surface roughness, martensitic transformation and mechanical loading.

Abstract: International audience; Background Crohn's disease (CD) location would influence the risk of complications and therapeutic strategies. The objective of this study was to compare the clinical presentation at diagnosis and the natural history of colonic CD in comparison to ileal CD and ulcerative colitis (UC) in pediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease. Methods All children (< 17 years) with a diagnosis of CD or UC made between 1988 and 2011 in a population-based registry were followed retrospectively until 2013. Presentation at diagnosis, risks of complicated disease, surgery, hospitalization and exposure to treatments in ileal CD (L1), colonic CD (L2) and UC were compared. Disease location was defined at diagnosis. In case of extension of the disease (L1 or L2 to L3), follow-up was censored. Results A total of 215 L1 patients, 234 L2 patients and 337 UC patients were included. At diagnosis, the proportion of males (L1 53.5%; L2 53.4%; UC 42.7%; p=0.012), age at diagnosis (15.0; 13.7; 14.0 years; p=0.003), family history of IBD (12.6%; 12.7%; 5.0%; p=0.005), diagnostic delay (3.0; 3.0; 2.0 months; p=0.001) and smoking prevalence (11.6%; 8.1%; 5.6%; p=0.041) were different between the three groups. Bloody stool and diarrhea at diagnosis was observed in respectively 14.9%, 44.4%, and 91.1% (p < 0.001) and 47.0%, 71.8%, and 65.0% (p < 0.001) of L1, L2 and UC. Abstract: International audience; Understanding the distributions and behaviors of dopants in Si nanocrystal are the primary and necessary issues to realize the controllable doping at nanoscale and develop the next generation of optoelectronic devices. This work reports the atomic-scale distributions of phosphorus and boron dopants in Si nanocrystals mul- tilayers. The phosphorus-doped and boron-doped Si nanocrystals/SiO2 multilayers are fabricated by PECVD and subsequently annealed at 1000 ◦C. It is found that the locations of phosphorus are redistributed after the formation of Si nanocrystals due to the combined effects of formation energy and self-purification. Phosphorus dopants are mainly distributed at the Si nanocrystals surfaces to passivate the dangling bonds, while part of them incorporate into Si nanocrystals lattice sites to provide free electrons. However, boron dopants exhibit different distributions in contrast to phosphorus. The concentration of boron on Si nanocrystals surfaces can reach as high as 40.0 at. %, which forms a dopant-shell covering on Si nanocrystals. Meanwhile, the boron dopant-shell can modify the surface states of Si nano- crystals like Si-oxide related emission centers and dangling bonds, which is responsible for the luminescence properties. Moreover, the boron-aggregations with concentration near 74.8 at. % are appeared inside Si nanocrystals and led to the damage of crystalline lattice.

Abstract: We present the results of the implantation of sulfur ions in ice samples (H2O:C3H8) in conditions relevant to Europa and other jovian satellites. The samples were prepared and irradiated at 80 K, and were thick enough to ensure the projectiles were implanted in the ice, allowing the sulfur projectiles to become part of the ensuing chemistry. The evolution of the samples was followed with Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and the organic residues were analyzed off-site through Ultra High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (UHRMS). The UHRMS shows formation of a complex, diverse refractory organic matter, however no evidence of organosulfur formation has been found. Introduction: Energetic particles from Jupiter’s magnetosphere (electrons, protons, oxygen and sulfur ions) are likely to be a key driver of the chemical evolution of the icy satellite’s surface, especially Europa; they can alter organic matter deposited on the surface from the internal ocean. In the case of impinging ions, in addition to the stopping power and total energy of the projectile [1], their reactivity is a possible factor in the chemistry. Sulfur is abundant in Jupiter’s magnetosphere [3] due to Io’s volcanic activity, and highly reactive. Experiments with sulfur projectiles have been performed and have shown the efficient creation of sulfuric acid in water ice [4, 5]; previous experiments by our group with interstellar analogs showed it can become part of the organic chemistry triggered by irradiation and form organosulfurs [6]. Here, in temperature conditions relevant to Europa (80K), we investigate the composition of the organic residue generated by the irradiation of a water:propane ice by sulfur ions. Experiments We performed the experiments at the ARIBE low-energy line at the Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds (GANIL) in Caen, France. The projectiles were 105 keV S6+ and 105 keV Ar7+ (the latter to produce a reference sample with a non-reactive projectile). The samples were prepared at 80K on a ZnSe window from a 2:1 H2O:C3H8 gas mixture and irradiated at a fluence of approximately 1014 ions. To ensure the products would be abundant enough to be detected, cycles of deposition-irradiation were repeated up to 15 times. The finally obtained samples were slowly warmed up to 300K to sublimate the volatiles and leave the refractory organic residue. This residue was analyzed off-site using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). This FT-ICR-MS technique represents the highest mass resolving power (R > 106) and highest mass accuracy ( Results Infrared spectroscopy shows little difference to previous work on irradiation with electrons of similar ices [8], except for the early production of CO2 and modest abundance of CH4. No qualitative difference was seen between Ar-irradiated and S-irradiated samples in the IR. The results from the ESI or LDI FT-ICR-MS analysis show a very diverse, (3000 + annotations) refractory (average Double Bond Equivalent=14) organic matter (Figure 1). The residue features an insoluble phase. Heavy molecules (m/z>200) are common, showing that a fairly low dose is enough to form large molecules. No organosulfur could be identified, in stark contrast with our previous experiments [6]. Analysis of the soluble phase by ESI-FT-ICR shows that the oxygen-bearing products tend to be lighter. We discuss how our results compare to experiments using electrons ([8], and our own work). Abstract: International audience; In studies of ion-induced molecular fragmentation, the challenging measurement of the velocity distribution of fragments emitted below 1-eV kinetic energy is rarely achieved, although most fragments have an energy below this value. Here, we study H$^+$ fragment emission in collisions of 10-keV O$^+$ ions with H$_2$ molecules using a field-free time-of-flight technique developed specifically to detect sub-eV fragments. We find that, in the velocity map, the binary ridge due to direct H$^+$ knockout is split into two parts arising from the rotational motion of the H$_2$ molecule, and that this split scales with rotational velocity. The velocity distribution of the nuclei in the original molecule is determined and the thermally populated J = 1 rotational level is found to be the dominant contributor, although asymmetry in the split indicates projectile-induced rotational transitions between M sublevels. These rotation effects influence fragment emission probabilities, thus carrying important consequences for the radiation-induced hydrogen loss and H$_2$ dissociation in the atmospheres or exospheres of planets and moons.

Abstract: Introduction : Les atteintes musculaires par mutation du gène LMNA ont un spectre large, avec des formes congénitales (L-CMD) et des formes plus tardives de type Emery Dreifus (EDMD) et proximales non rétractiles. L’évolution des L-CMD est rapidement progressive, commençant par une faiblesse cervico-axiale (Syndrome, de la tête tombante ou dropped head dyndrome DHS), puis des extrémités et des muscles respiratoires, pouvant associer une atteinte cardiaque. Le traitement par corticoïdes a été suggéré en raison de signes inflammatoires observés sur la biopsie musculaire. Méthodes : Étude rétrospective des enfants atteints de myopathie par mutations de LMNA traités par corticoïdes au moins un an dans trois centres français. Les données génétiques, phénotypiques, d’évolution clinique (motrice respiratoire, cardiologique) et des tests complémentaires (biopsie, imagerie musculaire, biochimiques) ont été recueillies.Résultats : 7 enfants (6 DHS, 1 EDMD) ont été traités avec prednisone à 0.75 mg/Kg jour à un âge moyen de 4 ans (2-8) pendant 3 ans (1-7). Tous portaient une mutation de novo du gène LMNA. Des signes inflammatoires étaient observés chez tous les enfants sur biopsie (2) ou IRM musculaire corps entier (5). Trois patients qui n’avaient jamais marché ont acquis la marche après le traitement, dont un avec appui (2 semaines- 1 an). Un patient qui avait perdu la marche l’a récupéré deux ans après le début des corticoïdes. Les 2 patients DHS ambulatoires avant traitement sont restés stables (1-3 ans). Les corticoïdes étaient arrêtés chez le patient EDMD après trois ans de traitement devant une perte de périmètre de marche et une aggravation cardiaque. Conclusion: Le traitement par corticoïdes pourrait être bénéfique chez les jeunes enfants avec mutations dans le gène LMNA, en particulier ceux avec phénotype DHS traités avant l'âge de quatre ans. L’IRM musculaire pourrait être utile comme méthode non invasive pour évaluer la présence d’inflammation avant traitement et dans l’évolution.

Abstract: Context Treeline-ecotone spatial patterns and their dynamics reflect underlying processes. Changes in ecotone pattern may reflect changes in climatic drivers or land-use practices. However, characterizing these dynamics presents a major challenge, limiting our ability to map, understand and predict changes in the upper limits of mountain forests. Objective This paper proposes a new method using multiple pattern dimensions to describe treeline-ecotone spatial pattern shifts. This standardized protocol should be able to (i) distinguish different types of treeline-ecotone patterns within a large study area, (ii) characterize temporal pattern shifts in spatial pattern between two or more dates. Method We mapped alpine treeline ecotones (ATE) at 648 sites in the eastern French Pyrenees using aerial images from ~ 1955 and ~ 2015, identifying forest and non-forest areas at the hillslope scale. Extracted patch metrics were summarized using a Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and spatial pattern change was quantified from the shift in the PCA space and compared to elevational shifts. Results Three clusters of patterns were distinguished: diffuse, discrete and island-forming ATEs. Between 1955 and 2015, about half of the sites changed from one pattern cluster to another. Shifts into discrete ATEs were associated with smaller and negative elevational shifts, while shifts into diffuse ATEs coincided with the highest positive elevational shifts. Conclusion The proposed method allows a standardized and repeatable quantification of vegetation pattern change in alpine treeline ecotones based on historical aerial imagery. Seeing the importance of treeline-ecotone shifts for alpine biodiversity, we encourage the use of this protocol to better understand treeline dynamics at treelines globally.

Abstract: We are grateful to the ANSES expert committee panel in charge of assessing animal health and animal welfare risk, and to the working group “Botulism,” including the authors as well as Catherine Belloc, Stéphane Bertagnoli, Alain Boissy, Henri-Jean Boulouis, Eric Collin, Jean-Claude Desfontis, David Fretin, Emmanuelle Gilot-Fromont, Etienne Giraud, Nadia Haddad, Viviane Hénaux, Elsa Jourdain, Sophie Le Poder-Alcon, Monique L’Hostis, Gilles Meyer, Elodie Monchatre-Leroy, Pierre Mormède, Carine Paraud, Ariane Payne, Carole Peroz-Sapede, Claire Ponsart, Claude Saegerman, Gaëlle Simon, Michèle Tremblay, Nathalie Arnich, Isabelle Attig, Carole Catastini, Charlotte Dunoyer, Nabila Haddache, and Elissa Khamisse.; International audience; Clostridium botulinum is the main causative agent of botulism, a neurological disease encountered in humans as well as animals. Nine types of botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) have been described so far. Amongst these “toxinotypes,” the A, the B and E are the most frequently encountered in humans while the C, D, C/D and D/C are mostly affecting domestic and wild birds as well as cattle. In France for instance, many cases and outbreaks are reported in these animal species every year. However, underestimation is very likely at least for avifauna species where the detection of dead animals can be challenging. Knowledge about BoNTs C, D, C/D, and D/C and the diseases they cause in animals and humans is still scarce and unclear. Specifically, the potential role of animal botulism outbreaks in cattle and poultry as a source of human illness needs to be further assessed. In this narrative review, we present the current knowledge about toxinotypes C, D, C/D, and D/C in cattle and poultry with, amongst various other aspects, their epidemiological cycles. We also discuss the zoonotic potential of these toxinotypes and some possible ways of risk mitigation. An adapted and effective management of botulism outbreaks in livestock also requires a better understanding of these less common and known toxinotypes.

Abstract: International audience; This paper contributes to the understanding of market categorisation processes. More specifically, it analyses the evolution of the independent music category, characterised as a fuzzy category by its instability, and as an alternative category by its power relations with the dominant mainstream music category. Based on a sociohistorical approach, we show how external forces such as boundary reconfigurations on the one hand, and internal forces such as tension around category representations on the other, shape the definition and evolution of the independent music market category. Our findings show the joint action of these dynamics in 1 the emergence and evolution of alternative categories. They highlight the interest of simultaneously examining these multiple dynamics and their relationships in the study of market categories. Our paper also reveals the strategic and ideological issues associated with the alternative-mainstream dialectic, which constitutes a key factor in the structuring and evolution of many other industries.; Cet article contribue à la compréhension des processus de catégorisation des marchés alternatifs. Plus spécifiquement, il analyse l’évolution de la catégorie des musiques indépendantes qui se caractérise comme catégorie floue par son instabilité et comme catégorie alternative par les rapports de force qu’elle entretient avec la catégorie dominante de la musique mainstream. À partir d’une approche sociohistorique, nous montrons comment les dynamiques externes telles que les jeux de frontières d’une part et les dynamiques internes telles que les tensions autour des représentations de la catégorie d’autre part, agissent sur la définition et l’évolution de la catégorie de marché des musiques indépendantes. Nos résultats permettent de souligner l’action conjointe de ces dynamiques dans l’émergence et l’évolution des catégories alternatives. Ils mettent en évidence l’intérêt d’examiner simultanément ces multiples dynamiques et leurs relations pour l’étude des catégories de marché. Notre article révèle également les enjeux stratégiques et idéologiques du rapport entre l’alternatif et le mainstream qui constitue un élément-clé de la structuration et de l’évolution de nombreux autres secteurs.
