Abstract: International audience; In the present paper, a fluid-structure interaction model is developed, questioning how the mechanical action of the blood onto an atheromatous plaque is affected by the length and the severity of the stenosis. An axisymmetric model is considered. The fluid is assumed Newtonian. The plaque is modelled as a heterogeneous hyperelastic anisotropic solid composed of the arterial wall, the lipid core and the fibrous cap. Transient velocity and pressure conditions of actual pulsatile blood flow are prescribed. The simulation is achieved using the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian scheme in the COMSOL commercial Finite Element package. The results reveal different types of behavior in function of the length (denoted L) and severity (denoted S) of the stenosis. Whereas large plaques (L > 10 mm) are mostly deformed under the action of the blood pressure, it appears that shorter plaques (L < 10 mm) are significantly affected by the shear stresses. The shear stresses tend to deform the plaque by pinching it. This effect is called: "the pinching effect". It has an essential influence on the mechanical response of the plaque. For two plaques having the same radius severity S = 45%, the maximum stress in the fibrous cap is 50% larger for the short plaque (L = 5 mm) than for a larger plaque (L = 10 mm), and the maximum wall shear stress is increased by 100%. Provided that they are confirmed by experimental investigations, these results may offer some new perspectives for understanding the vulnerability of short plaques. more...

Abstract: Given λ > 0, p ∈ [0, 1] and a Poisson Point Process Po(λ) in R 2 with intensity λ, we consider the random graph G = G(λ, p) with vertex set Po(λ) in which every pair of vertices at distance at most 1 forms an edge with probability p, independently of other pairs. Our study is motivated by the question of locality for bond percolation on the standard random geometric graph G(λ, 1). We show that for a large class of graphs converging locally to G(λ, 1) in a suitable sense, the corresponding critical percolation thresholds converge to the one of G(λ, 1). The proof is based on a finite volume criterion. In this direction, we strengthen recent results of Penrose by showing that the size of the largest component rescaled by n converges almost surely to a constant, and providing sharp bounds for the size of the second-largest component. more...

Abstract: We study farsighted coalitional stability in the context of TU-games. Chwe (1994, p.318) notes that, in this context, it is difficult to prove nonemptiness of the largest consistent. We show that every TU-game has a nonempty largest consistent set. Moreover, the proof of this result allows to conclude that each TU-game has a farsighted stable set. We go further by providing a characterization of the collection of farsighted stable sets in TU-games. We also show that the farsighted core of a TU-game is empty or equal to the set of imputations of the game. Next, we study the relationships between the core and the largest consistent set in superadditive TU-games and in clan games. In the last section, we explore the stability of the Shapley value in superadditive TU-games. We show that the Shapley value is always a stable imputation. More precisely, if the Shapley value does not belong to the core, then it constitutes a farsighted stable set. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a superadditive TU-game to have the Shapley value in the largest consistent set. more...

Abstract: In this paper we consider cooperative graph games being TU-games in which players cooperate if they are connected in the communication graph. We focus our attention to the average tree solutions introduced by Herings, van der Laan and Talman [6] and Herings, van der Laan, Talman and Yang [7]. Each average tree solution is defined with re- spect to a set, say T , of admissible rooted spanning trees. Each average tree solution is characterized by efficiency, linearity and an axiom of T - hierarchy on the class of all graph games with a fixed communication graph. We also establish that the set of admissible rooted spanning trees introduced by Herings, van der Laan, Talman and Yang [7] is the largest set of rooted spanning trees such that the corresponding aver- age tree solution is a Harsanyi solution. One the other hand, we show that this set of rooted spanning trees cannot be constructed by a dis- tributed algorithm. Finally, we propose a larger set of spanning trees which coincides with the set of all rooted spanning trees in clique-free graphs and that can be computed by a distributed algorithm. more...

Abstract: BackgroundDirect oral anticoagulants (DOACs) account for an increasing proportion of prescriptions in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) in primary care. Inappropriate dosing of DOACs is a common problem, with under-dosing being a particular issue. However, conflicting results have been reported about the factors independently associated with inappropriate dosing.AimTo describe inappropriate prescriptions of DOACs among patients in the CACAO French nationwide general practice cohort, and to identify the factors independently associated with inappropriate DOAC doses.Design and settingCross-sectional baseline analysis of the CACAO French national multicentre prospective cohort of adult patients in primary care receiving an oral anticoagulant who were recruited between April and October 2014.MethodA total of 1111 patients from the CACAO cohort who received a DOAC for NVAF were included in this study. Inappropriate prescriptions of DOACs were described (inappropriate dosage, contraindications, non-indications, interactions, and non-compliance with the precautions for use). Multivariate logistic models were used to investigate factors associated with inappropriate DOAC dosing (under-dosing and over-dosing).ResultsOverall, 438 patients (39.4%) received at least one inappropriate DOAC prescription. The most common inappropriate prescription was inappropriate dosage (n = 374, 33.7%), particularly under-dosing (n = 348, 31.3%). Multivariate analysis revealed that factors independently associated with under-dosing were older age, prescription of apixaban or dabigatran, and a CHA2DS2-VASc score ≥2 vs. a score = 1. Factors with over-dosing were kidney failure, a HAS-BLED score ≥3, and older age.ConclusionThe appropriateness of DOAC prescribing for NVAF can be improved, especially in older patients, and in patients with kidney failure, a higher risk of ischaemic stroke, and/or a higher risk of bleeding. GPs have a key role in increasing the proportion of appropriate DOAC prescriptions via informational, educational, and/or management strategies. more...

Abstract: Three autochthonous cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) acquired in rural areas of France where Lyme borreliosis, but not TBE, is endemic highlight the emergence of TBE in new areas. For patients with neurologic involvement who have been in regions where Ixodes ticks circulate, clinicians should test for TBE virus and other tickborne viruses. more...

Abstract: Background We assessed prevalence of multimorbidity (MM) according to year of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnosis in elderly people living with HIV (PLWH). Methods This was a cross-sectional study of MM in PLWH aged ≥70 years from the Dat’AIDS French multicenter cohort. MM was defined as at least 3 coexistent morbidities of high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, non-AIDS cancer, chronic renal failure, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, obesity, undernutrition, or hypercholesterolemia. Logistic regression models evaluated the association between MM and calendar periods of HIV diagnosis (1983–1996, 1997–2006, and 2007–2018). The secondary analysis evaluated MM as a continuous outcome, and a sensitivity analysis excluded PLWH with nadir CD4 count Results Between January 2017 and September 2018, 2476 PLWH were included. Median age was 73 years, 75% were men, median CD4 count was 578 cells/μL, and 94% had controlled viremia. MM prevalence was 71%. HBP and hypercholesterolemia were the most prevalent comorbidities. After adjustment for age, gender, smoking status, hepatitis C and hepatitis B virus coinfection, group of exposure, nadir CD4 count, CD4:CD8 ratio, and last CD4 level, calendar period of diagnosis was not associated with MM (P = .169). Abstract: Resume Objectifs Evaluer la satisfaction des patientes operees d’un cancer du sein en ambulatoire et le role du medecin traitant. Methodes Cette etude de satisfaction prospective s’interessait aux patientes operees d’un cancer du sein en ambulatoire, toutes chirurgies confondues, entre fevrier et octobre 2018, au CHU et a la Clinique Mutualiste chirurgicale de Saint-Etienne, Loire, France. Le recueil des donnees a ete fait par l’intermediaire d’un questionnaire de satisfaction remis aux patientes lors de la consultation postoperatoire. Resultats Cent quatre patientes ont ete incluses. L’intervention la plus frequente etait la mastectomie partielle avec ganglion sentinelle (63,5 %). Sur la totalite des chirurgies carcinologiques mammaires, 47,6 % etaient realisees en ambulatoire. Parmi les patientes, 97 % etaient satisfaites, 96,9 % auraient recommande cette procedure a une amie et 47 % avaient repris leurs activites de la vie quotidienne des le deuxieme jour. Parmi les patientes, 16,2 % auraient souhaite rester hospitalisees une nuit apres l’intervention. Cette preference etait liee a la lourdeur (p = 0,035) et la longueur de l’intervention (p = 0,025), la fatigue (p = 0,03) et au sentiment d’isolement (p = 0,016). Parmi les patientes, 25,5 % ont consulte leur medecin traitant pour des problemes organiques, psychologiques, administratifs, le suivi et l’echange d’informations. Conclusions La chirurgie ambulatoire du cancer du sein semble sure et de qualite. Des procedures standardisees, une bonne information sur la prise en charge globale de la maladie et les particularites liees a l’ambulatoire, ainsi que l’echange d’informations avec les medecins generalistes sont les cles de la reussite. more...

Abstract: Based on a spatial extension of an R&D investment model, this paper measures the macroeconomic impact of the French R&D policy mix on business R&D using regional data. Our measure takes into account not only the direct effect of policies but also indirect effects generated by the existence of spatial interaction between regions. Using a unique database containing information on the levels of various R&D policy instruments received by firms in French NUTS3 regions over the period 2001–2011, our estimates of a spatial Durbin model with structural breaks and fixed effects reveal the existence of a negative spatial dependence among R&D investments in regions. In this context, while a-spatial estimates would conclude that all instruments have a crowding-in effect, we show that national subsidies are the only instrument that is able to generate significant crowding-in effects. On the contrary, it seems that the design, size and spatial allocation of funds from the other instruments (tax credits, local subsidies, European subsidies) lead them to act (in the French context) as beggar-thy-neighbor policies. Abstract: International audience; As HIV-infected adults on successful antiretroviral therapy (ART) are expected to have close to normal lifespans, they will increasingly develop age-related comorbidities. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to compare in the French Dat’AIDS cohort, the HIV geriatric population, aged 75 years and over, to the elderly one, aged from 50 to 74 years. As of Dec 2015, 16,436 subjects (43.8% of the French Dat’AIDS cohort) were aged from 50 to 74 (elderly group) and 572 subjects (1.5%) were aged 75 and over (geriatric group). Durations of HIV infection and of ART were slightly but significantly different, median at 19 and 18 years, and 15 and 16 years in the elderly and geriatric group, respectively. The geriatric group was more frequently at CDC stage C and had a lower nadir CD4. This group had been more exposed to first generation protease inhibitors and thymidine analogues. Despite similar virologic suppression, type of ART at the last visit significantly differed between the 2 groups: triple ART in 74% versus 68.2%, ART ≥ 4 drugs in 4.7% versus 2.7%; dual therapy in 11.6% versus 16.4% in the elderly group and the geriatric group, respectively. In the geriatric group all co-morbidities were significantly more frequent, except dyslipidemia, 4.3% of the elderly group had ≥4 co-morbidities versus18.4% in the geriatric group. Despite more co-morbidities and more advanced HIV infection the geriatric population achieve similar high rate of virologic suppression than the elderly population. Abstract: Background Children with sickle cell anemia (SCA) have an 11% risk of stroke by the age of 18. Chronic transfusion applied in patients detected to be at risk by transcranial Doppler allows a significant reduction of stroke risk. However, chronic transfusion exposes to several adverse events, including alloimmunization and iron overload, and is not curative. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation allows termination of the transfusion program, but its benefit has not been demonstrated. Design DREPAGREFFE ( NCT01340404 ) is a multicenter, prospective trial enrolling SCA children younger than 15 years receiving chronic transfusion due to a history of abnormal transcranial Doppler (velocities ≥ 200 cm/s). Only those with at least one non-SCA sibling and parents accepting HLA-typing and transplantation with a genoidentical donor were eligible. Chronic transfusion was pursued in patients with no available donor, whereas others were transplanted. Comparison between the 2 arms (transfusion vs transplantation) was analyzed using both genetic randomization and propensity-score matching as a sensitivity analysis. The primary end-point was the velocity measure at 1 year. Secondary endpoints were the incidence of stroke, silent cerebral infarcts and stenoses, cognitive performance in comparison with siblings, allo-immunization, iron-overload, phosphatidyl-serine, angiogenesis/hypoxia, brain injury-related factor expression, quality of life and cost. Objectives To show that genoidentical transplantation decreases velocities significantly more than chronic transfusion in SCA children at risk of stroke. Discussion DREPAGREFFE is the first prospective study to evaluate transplantation in SCA children. Abstract: International audience; VDTN concept and V2X communications capabilities can be utilised for an efficient data collection and delivery in smart cities. Here we present performance comparison of four lightweight VDTN routing protocols: First Contact, Epidemic, Spray and Wait, and MaxProp in terms of its percentage of message delivered, latency, overhead ratio, and hop counts. Overall results show that Spray and Wait and MaxProp show high performance in most of the scenarios, while each also shows potentials for improvements. Abstract: Identity information is vital for highly social species as it facilitates individual recognition and allows for differentiation between social partners in many contexts, such as dominance hierarchies, territorial defence, mating and parent-offspring identification, and group cohesion and coordination. For many species vocalisations can be the most effective communication channel in complex environments and over long-distances and are encoded with the stable features of an individual’s voice. Associations between these individual vocal signatures and accumulated social knowledge about conspecifics can greatly increase an animal’s fitness, as it facilitates adaptively constructive social decisions. This thesis investigates the encoding and decoding of identity information in the vocal communication system of the bonobo, Pan paniscus. We firstly investigated the stability of vocal signatures across the five most common call types in the bonobo vocal repertoire. Results showed that while all call types have the potential to code identity information, loud calls used during times of high arousal and for distance communication have the strongest individual vocal signatures. Following the first study, we investigated if social familiarity and relatedness affect the acoustic features that code individual information in the bark call type. Overall, we found strong evidence for vocal convergence, and specifically, that individuals who are related and familiar, independently from one another, are more vocally similar to one another than unrelated and unfamiliar individuals. In a final study, we tested if bonobos are capable of using the encoded identity information to recognise past group members that they no longer live with. Through a series playback experiments we demonstrated that bonobos are capable of recognising familiar individuals from vocalisations alone even after years of separation. Collectively, the results of this thesis show that the encoding and decoding of identity information in bonobo vocalisations is a dynamic system, subject to modification through social processes but robust enough to allow for individual recognition over time. Abstract: Introduction The decision regarding when to return to sport after an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is an important one. Using a variety of subjective and objective parameters, various attempts have been made to determine an optimal timeline for a return to sport after ACLR, but none have been validated. The aim of the present study is therefore to determine which criteria or combination of criteria could allow to return to sport with the lowest possible risk of reinjury. Methods and analysis This study is a prospective cohort, single-centre study, with repeated assessments at 6, 9 and 12 months post-ACL surgical reconstruction and including a 3-year follow-up of patients’ sporting activity and reinjuries. 275 patients will be included to test explanatory variables. Postural control analysis, knee laxity, questionnaires (International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia-11 (TSK-11), Anterior Cruciate Ligament—Return to Sport After Reinjury (ACL-RSI) and Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (SANE)), modified Star Excursion Balance Test, running and sprinting biomechanics, Hop Tests and Isokinetic Tests will all be used. The primary outcome will be any reinjury during the follow-up period, defined as a graft rupture, a contralateral ACL rupture or any injury necessitating an interruption of training and requiring a medical consultation. Two groups will be constituted during the follow-up, separating reinjured from non-reinjured patients. In addition, classic analysis and data mining approaches will be used to build predictive models. Abstract: International audience; Kriging models have been widely used in computer experiments for the analysis of time-consuming computer codes. Based on kernels, they are flexible and can be tuned to many situations. In this paper, we construct kernels that reproduce the computer code complexity by mimicking its interaction structure. While the standard tensor-product kernel implicitly assumes that all interactions are active, the new kernels are suited for a general interaction structure, and will take advantage of the absence of interaction between some inputs. The methodology is twofold. First, the interaction structure is estimated from the data, using a first initial standard Kriging model, and represented by a so-called FANOVA graph. New FANOVA-based sensitivity indices are introduced to detect active interactions. Then this graph is used to derive the form of the kernel, and the corresponding Kriging model is estimated by maximum likelihood. The performance of the overall procedure is illustrated by several 3-dimensional and 6-dimensional simulated and real examples. Abstract: In cooperative Cournot oligopoly games, it is known that the β-core is equal to the α-core, and both are non-empty if every individual profit function is continuous and concave (Zhao, Games Econ Behav 27:153–168, 1999b). Following Chander and Tulkens (Int J Game Theory 26:379–401, 1997), we assume that firms react to a deviating coalition by choosing individual best reply strategies. We deal with the problem of the non-emptiness of the induced core, the γ-core, by two different approaches. The first establishes that the associated Cournot oligopoly Transferable Utility (TU)-games are balanced if the inverse demand function is differentiable and every individual profit function is continuous and concave on the set of strategy profiles, which is a step forward beyond Zhao’s core existence result for this class of games. The second approach, restricted to the class of Cournot oligopoly TU-games with linear cost functions, provides a single-valued allocation rule in the γ-core called Nash Pro rata (NP)-value. This result generalizes Funaki and Yamato’s (Int J Game Theory 28:157–171, 1999) core existence result from no capacity constraint to asymmetric capacity constraints. Abstract: We investigated the changes in the technical ability of force application/orientation against the ground vs. the physical capability of total force production after a multiple-set repeated sprints series. Twelve male physical education students familiar with sprint running performed four sets of five 6-s sprints (24s of passive rest between sprints, 3min between sets). Sprints were performed from a standing start on an instrumented treadmill, allowing the computation of vertical (F(V)), net horizontal (F(H)) and total (F(Tot)) ground reaction forces for each step. Furthermore, the ratio of forces was calculated as RF=F(H)F(Tot)(-1), and the index of force application technique (D(RF)) representing the decrement in RF with increase in speed was computed as the slope of the linear RF-speed relationship. Changes between pre- (first two sprints) and post-fatigue (last two sprints) were tested using paired t-tests. Performance decreased significantly (e.g. top speed decreased by 15.7±5.4%; P0.001), and all the mechanical variables tested significantly changed. F(H) showed the largest decrease, compared to F(V) and F(Tot). D(RF) significantly decreased (P0.001, effect size=1.20), and the individual magnitudes of change of D(RF) were significantly more important than those of F(Tot) (19.2±20.9 vs. 5.81±5.76%, respectively; P0.01). Abstract: We analyse the anisotropy of homogeneous turbulence in an electrically conducting fluid submitted to a uniform magnetic field, for low magnetic Reynolds number, in the quasi- static approximation. We interpret disagreeing previous predictions between linearized theory and simulations: in the linear limit, the kinetic energy of transverse velocity components, normal to the magnetic field, decays faster than the kinetic energy of the axial component, along the magnetic field (Moffatt (1967)); whereas many numerical studies predict a final state characterised by dominant energy of transverse velocity components. We investigate the corresponding nonlinear phenomenon using Direct Numerical Simulations of freely-decaying turbulence, and a two-point statistical spectral closure based on the Eddy Damped Quasi-Normal Markovian model. The transition from the three-dimensional turbulent flow to a "two-and-a-half-dimensional" flow (Montgomery & Turner (1982)) is a result of the combined effects of short-time linear Joule dissipation and longer time nonlinear creation of polarisation anisotropy. It is this combination of linear and nonlinear effects which explains the disagreement between predictions from linearized theory and results from numerical simulations. The transition is characterized by the elongation of turbulent structures along the applied magnetic field, and by the strong anisotropy of directional two-point correlation spectra, in agreement with experimental evidence. Inertial equatorial transfers in both DNS and the model are presented to describe in detail the most important equilibrium dynamics. Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to develop and illustrate various new methods for solving many classes of Cauchy singular integral and integro-differential equations. We study the successive approximation method for solving Cauchy singular integral equations of the first kind in the general case, then we develop a collocation method based on trigonometric polynomials combined with a regularization procedure, for solving Cauchy integral equations of the second kind. In the same perspective, we use a projection method for solving operator equation with bounded noncompact operators in Hilbert spaces. We apply a collocation and projection methods for solving Cauchy integro-differential equations, using airfoil and Legendre polynomials; L'objectif de ce travail est la résolution des équations intégrales singulières à noyau Cauchy. On y traite les équations singulières de Cauchy de première espèce par la méthode des approximations successives. On s'intéresse aussi aux équations intégrales à noyau de Cauchy de seconde espèce, en utilisant les polynômes trigonométriques et les techniques de Fourier. This problem is called the cage graph problem and has some links with the error code theory. G-graphs can be used in many applications: symmetric and emisymmetric graph constructions, (Bretto and Gillibert (2008) [12]), hamiltonicity of Cayley graphs, and so on. In this paper, we show that G-graphs can be a good tool to construct some upper bounds for the cage problem. Abstract: Background: Knowing the frequency and causes of dropouts in combined events seems relevant and helpful to develop strategies of injury prevention and to better define/understand the necessary qualities for decathletes. Objective: To determine the causes of dropouts and the frequency of injury in decathlon. Design: This pilot prospective study focused on 3 high-level decathlon competitions. Main outcome measures: Data concerning athlete’s participation (number of participating athletes listed on the start list, number of athletes in the final ranking), and the causes of dropouts were collected prospectively during the 3 high-level decathlon competitions. Results: 38% of decathletes did not complete these competitions. The causes of dropout were: injury (36%), loss of motivation (36%), tiredness (9%), and indeterminate (18%). 50% of injuries were acute hamstring injuries during explosive events on the first day (100-m and long jump). Conclusions: Musculoskeletal injury prevention and motivational aspects seem important to complete an entire decathlon and to aim at best performance. Abstract: International audience; The purpose of this study was to examine the physiological and biomechanical changes occurring in a subject after running 8,500 km in 161 days (i.e. 52.8 km daily). Three weeks before, 3 weeks after (POST) and 5 months after (POST+5) running from Paris to Beijing, energy cost of running (Cr), knee flexor and extensor isokinetic strength and biomechanical parameters (using a treadmill dynamometer) at different velocities were assessed in an experienced ultra-runner. At POST, there was a tendency toward a 'smoother' running pattern, as shown by (a) a higher stride frequency and duty factor, and a reduced aerial time without a change in contact time, (b) a lower maximal vertical force and loading rate at impact and (c) a decrease in both potential and kinetic energy changes at each step. This was associated with a detrimental effect on Cr (+6.2%) and a loss of strength at all angular velocities for both knee flexors and extensors. At POST+5, the subject returned to his original running patterns at low but not at high speeds and maximal strength remained reduced at low angular velocities (i.e. at high levels of force). It is suggested that the running pattern changes observed in the present study were a strategy adopted by the subject to reduce the deleterious effects of long distance running. Abstract: International audience; We present a simple algorithm to refine a finite volume bidimensional mesh admissible to solve elliptic or parabolic partial differential equations. The approximation of the Laplace operator reduces to the one of the normal fluxes along the edges of control volumes. These normal fluxes can be computed in a consistent way by a classical two points flux approximation simple if the mesh is admissible in the finite volume sense. Abstract: We build a model of trade and location with two countries which differ with respect to their level of productivity. Public expenditures are shared between a subsidy to firms reducing the labor cost and another one to households. We show that the high-productivity country pays a lower net subsidy to each firm than does the other country. Nevertheless, the high-productivity country succeeds in attracting a majority of firms and invests more public expenditures for firms and households if trade cost are high enough. Finally, the welfare analysis suggests that the non-cooperative level of net subsidy to firms can be inefficiently low in the high-productivity country under some conditions -- such as the distribution of profits and the level of trade costs -- while it is always inefficiently high in the low-productivity country.; Nous développons un modèle de commerce et de localisation comprenant deux pays différents en terme de productivité. Les dépenses publiques ont deux affectations possibles : une subvention forfaitaire aux ménages immobiles et une aide aux firmes mobiles diminuant le coût salarial qu’elles supportent. Nous montrons qu’à l’équilibre en subventions le pays à haute productivité alloue aux firmes une aide publique nette de taxe plus faible. En dépit de cette politique moins généreuse, le premier pays accueille une plus grande part de firmes de sorte que ses dépenses totales en faveur de ces dernières peuvent être plus importantes que dans le pays à faible productivité quand l’intégration commerciale est suffisamment avancée. Abstract: We consider a multimarket framework where a set of firms compete on two interrelated oligopolistic markets. Prior to competing in these markets, firms can spy on others in order to increase the quality of their product. We characterize the equilibrium espionage networks and networks that maximize social welfare under the most interesting scenario of diseconomies of scope. We find that in some situations firms may refrain from spying even if it is costless. Moreover, even though spying leads to increased product quality, there exist situations where it is detrimental to both consumer welfare and social welfare. more...

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to highlight the relevance of a geographical multilevel technology policy within the European Union. At the present time the European policy of innovation is a "community" policy, in other words it involves a sharing of skills. In this paper we argue that outside the problems that this situation inherently poses, this territorial organisation may be considered as an asset. We use the central concept of technology externalities, taken in its traditional shape and in its renewals, to provide theoretical justifications for a “territorialised technology policy”, that is to say a policy of innovation designed and implemented on several territorial levels. Abstract: In a music recognition task, the classification of a new melody is often achieved by looking for the closest piece in a set of already known prototypes. The definition of a relevant similarity measure becomes then a crucial point. So far, the edit distance approach with a-priori fixed operation costs has been one of the most used to accomplish the task. In this paper, the application of a probabilistic learning model to both string and tree edit distances is proposed and is compared to a genetic algorithm cost fitting approach. The results show that both learning models outperform fixed-costs systems, and that the probabilistic approach is able to describe consistently the underlying melodic similarity model. Abstract: The high order homogenization technique generates the so called infinite order homogenized equation. Its coefficients were widely discussed in composite mechanics literature because they are closely related to the so called high order strain gradients theories. However, it was not clear what is the correct mathematical setting for this equation and what are the asymptotically exact boundary conditions. In the present Note we give a variational formulation for the high order homogenized equation by the projection of the initial problem on the “ansatz subspace”. This formulation generates the appropriate boundary conditions for the high order homogenized equation.
