Mutual occlusion is an essential feature for augmented reality (AR) displays for allowing the virtual content to be clearly perceived under an excessively illuminated environment. Although a few works have been done to facilitate the performance of occlusion-capable optical see-through augmented reality (OC-OST-AR) displays, the realization of mutual occlusion in a wide field-of-view (FOV) is still challenging. Divergent from typical hard-edge occlusion and soft edge-occlusion designs, we propose the paired-ellipsoidal-mirror (PEM) structure. The proposed system is allowed to support either hard-edge occlusion or enhanced soft-edge occlusion in a wide FOV by optionally fixing a spatial light modulator (SLM) before the entrance pupil or at an inner focal plane. The numerical aperture (NA) of the system is efficiently increased by the combination of paired ellipsoidal mirror imaging and aperture stop restriction. With proof-of-concept prototypes built, virtual display in a FOV of H160°×V74° and mutual occlusion in a FOV of H122°×V74° are demonstrated with a basic design, respectively. Furthermore, a mixed FOV of H95.3°×V52.9° is demonstrated by an optimized design with vertical parallax reduction and virtual display improvement.

Background Fundus examination is an easy, quick and effective way to diagnose sight- and life-threatening diseases. However, medical students and physicians report lack of proficiency and self-confidence in perform fundoscopy. The aim of this study was to compare students’ self-confidence in fundus examination, using two different direct ophthalmoscopes, 1 month and 1 year after practical training. Methods In this prospective cohort, medical students (MS) of the same class were divided in small groups for PanOptic (PO) or conventional (CO) direct ophthalmoscope training. The intervention group encompassed MS of the 4th -year (class of 2019), and the control group encompassed MS of year behind (class of 2020). A questionnaire to measure self-confidence in fundoscopy technique assessing optic nerve, cup-to-disc ratio and macula was translated and validated to Portuguese, and applied 1-month and 1-year after practical training. Results One-hundred and sixty-seven MS were enrolled (35 PO group, 38 CO group, and 94 control group). PO group had a significantly higher overall self-confidence comparing either control or CO groups, respectively (3.57 ± 0.65 vs. 2.97 ± 1.03 vs. 2.46 ± 0.87, p p p p p = 0.03) and in optic disc margins assessing (3.16 ± 0.85 vs. 2.95 ± 0.78, p = 0.03), but not significant in the evaluation of cup-to-disc ratio (2.78 ± 0.97 vs. 2.68 ± 0.94, p = 0.08), and macula (3.34 ± 0.79 vs. 3.27 ± 0.98, p = 0.07). Conclusions Students were more confident in use PO as an instrument to perform direct ophthalmoscopy immediately after practical training, but confidence level of CO was higher compared to PO one year after practical training. These findings would help medical schools decide which ophthalmoscope to choose to teach fundus examination.

Photothermal imaging is useful for detecting individual nanoparticles and obtaining the absorption spectra. This study presents a wide-field photothermal reflectance spectroscopy technique achieved by incorporating a pump beam, a probe beam, and a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera into a commercial microscopic setup. The presented design does not require precise alignment between the pump and the probe beams and enables the observation of numerous individual nanoparticles during image acquisition. Despite the use of a simple imaging processing method, i.e., a four-bucket method using a CCD camera, sufficient sensitivity for the spectral imaging of a single gold nanorod (20 nm diameter and 84 nm length) is demonstrated. Numerous individual nanoparticles within a wide field of view (240 μm × 180 μm) are detected in an image captures at an imaging measurement speed of 0.02 mm2 min−1. Furthermore, the proposed photothermal reflectance spectroscopy technique can detect the variation in the absorption peak of the measured spectra depending on the aspect ratio of individual nanoparticles within a spectral resolution of 1 nm.

Non-rotationally averaged 3D structures of fibers can be restored from their rotationally averaged diffraction patterns., X-ray fiber diffraction is potentially a powerful technique to study the structure of fibrous materials, such as DNA and synthetic polymers. However, only rotationally averaged diffraction patterns can be recorded and it is difficult to correctly interpret them without the knowledge of esoteric diffraction theories. Here we demonstrate that, in principle, the non-rotationally averaged 3D structure of a fibrous material can be restored from its fiber diffraction pattern. The method is a simple puzzle-solving process and in ideal cases it does not require any prior knowledge about the structure, such as helical symmetry. We believe that the proposed method has a potential to transform the fiber diffraction to a 3D imaging technique, and will be useful for a wide field of life and materials sciences.

As a knowledge organization and representation method, ontology that can store land cover spectral, texture, shape attributes and relationships derived from image analysis. With the knowledge organized in ontology, the efficiency of automatic or semi-automatic land cover information extraction for the large coastal area is supposed to be improved. Together with the help of GF-1 Wide Field of View (WFV) data, which covers almost 200 km width area, the more frequent monitoring and change detection for coastal area of Guangxi province are available. This study makes attempt to monitor the land cover of Guangxi coastal area using GF-1 WFV data with ontological method. The land cover ontology for this area is established first via image feature analysis. Using this ontology, automatic image extraction from GF-1 WFV data of subsequent monitoring time is realized. The results of this study reveal that, using ontology, land cover extraction can be completed in acceptable accuracy but with higher efficiency.

A novel wide-field electron arc technique with a scatterer is implemented for widespread Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) in the distal extremities. Monte Carlo beam modeling for electron arc beams was established to achieve in-vivo measurement data. We enrolled one patient with recurrent KS on the lower extremities who had been treated with photon radiation therapy. The 4- and 6-MeV electron arc plans were created, and then compared to two photon plans: two opposite photon beam and volumetric modulated arc with bolus. Compared to the two photon techniques, the electron arc plans resulted in superior dose saving to normal organs beneath the skin region, although it shows inferior coverage and homogeneity for PTV. The electron arc treatment technique with scatterer was successfully implemented for the treatment of widespread KS in the distal extremities with lower radiation exposure to the normal organs beyond the skin lesions, which could be a treatment option for recurrent skin cancer in the extremities.

Automated analysis of leakage on fluorescein angiography is a measurable and clinically applicable endpoint that can be used to follow patients with posterior uveitis. A number of studies have analyzed the use of automated analysis of leakage on fluorescein angiography and are reviewed in this article.

Purpose: To evaluate the potential clinical utility of wide-field swept source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) using a prototype device compared to a wide-field fundus autofluorescence (FAF) for analysis of the disease activity in eyes with tubercular serpiginous-like choroiditis (TBSLC). Methods: Using a prototype SS-OCTA device (PLEX Elite, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA), 17 eyes of 12 consecutive patients with TBSLC were imaged and multiple 12 mm × 12 mm OCTA scans were captured, which were montaged to create wide-field montage OCTA images scans. A wide- FAF (Eidon, CenterVue, Padova, Italy) was performed in the same sitting. Two masked graders independently analyzed OCTA and FAF images for the presence of choroidal lesions, recorded the number of lesions identifiable, and provided a subjective grading for the activity of individual lesion, which were then compared. Results: The total number of lesions identified on FAF were 282 (posterior pole lesions, n = 129 and peripheral lesions n = 153) and on wide-field SS-OCTA were 230 (posterior pole lesions, n = 108 and peripheral lesions n = 122). Active choroidal lesions were comparable on the two machines (n = 28 on FAF and n = 28 on SS-OCTA, respectively); whereas numerous healed lesions were identified on FAF (n = 219) as compared to SS-OCTA (n = 170). There was good correlation among the devices for healed lesions (Pearson correlation, r = 0.82) and active lesions (r = 0.88). Conclusion: There was good correlation between FAF and wide-field SS-OCTA for detection of disease activity in TBSLC; however, FAF depicted greater number of healed lesions compared to wide-field SS-OCTA.

Purpose To report the individual retinal layer thicknesses up to mid-equator in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) using Spectralis (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) wide-field optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods Retinal layers were segmented using a custom designed semi-automated algorithm, where reference points were marked by the examiner to enable software to automatically compute the thickness values of each retinal sublayer at an interval of 1 mm from reference points. The values of individual retinal thicknesses in eyes with varying severity of DR were compared with the values of healthy subjects. Generalized estimating equation was performed to compensate for inclusion of both eyes of patients. Results A total of 64 patients (119 eyes) with a mean age of 68.97 ± 10.27 years were included. Background To describe the peripheral retinal findings associated with systemic medication toxicity and to outline the importance of ultra-widefield imaging in the detection, analysis and monitoring of these abnormalities. Main text This review highlights the retinal manifestations associated with the more common drug toxicities, with emphasis on the peripheral features and the indications for wide field imaging. The presenting findings, underlying pathophysiology, and retinal alterations in hydroxychloroquine, thioridazine, didanosine, tamoxifen, MEK-inhibitor, and immune checkpoint inhibitor associated drug toxicity will be described and the importance of wide field imaging in the evaluation of these abnormalities will be emphasized. Conclusions Wide field retinal imaging can improve the detection of peripheral retinal abnormalities associated with drug toxicity and may be an important tool in the diagnosis and management of these disorders.

The use of genetically encoded calcium indicators allows longitudinal imaging over months and can achieve cell-type specificity. We also describe a pipeline to process the imaging data. Steel surfaces have been coated with Co-based tungsten carbide (WC) in an additive printing process. This process leads to compact and extremely mechanically stable surfaces. We performed tribological measurements using WC counter bodies under dry conditions and severe mechanical load. Low coefficients of friction, even for rough surfaces, were found and the resulting wear rates were extraordinarily small, even when compared to high-quality PVD film with a similar composition. These findings suggest a wide field of application for this novel preparation process for wear-resistive surfaces.

The flavour and the volatilome of apple wines made from the Austrian heritage variety Ilzer Rose was in the scope of this study. The apple wines were produced by adopting oenological practises that are not commonly used in fruit wine production. Different fermentation strategies including the addition of enzymes with β-glucosidase activity, addition of a fining agent, maceration of the mash along with mash fermentation were applied. The volatile compounds of the juices as intermediates and the resulting apple wines were analysed using headspace-SPME GC-MS. CATA technique with a well-trained panel was applied for sensory evaluation. The results show that the flavour of single-variety apple wine can be significantly altered by taking oenological measures. High correlations were found between the results of the analytical investigation and the sensory evaluation. Maceration of the mash leads to an increase in the fruity character of the products, also reflected by significantly higher fruit ester quantities in the wine. During mash fermentation, spontaneous malolactic fermentation was induced leading to a product with new, but thoroughly interesting sensory properties of the apple wine. The results of this study demonstrate that the integration of oenological measures may open a wide field to the development of a high diversity in apple wine flavour.

It has been established that Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) can produce Very High Energy radiation (E > 100 GeV), opening a new window on the investigation of particle acceleration and radiation properties in the most energetic domain. We expect that next-generation instruments, such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), will mark a huge improvement in their observation. However, constraints on the target visibility and the limited duty cycle of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) reduce their ability to react promptly to transient events and to characterise their general properties. Here we show that an instrument based on the Extensive Air Shower (EAS) array concept, proposed by the Southern Wide Field-of-view Gamma-ray Observatory (SWGO) Collaboration, has promising possibilities to detect and track VHE emission from GRBs. Observations made by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) identified some events with a distinct spectral component, extending above $1\,$GeV or even $10\,$GeV, which can represent a substantial fraction of the emitted energy and also arise in early stages of the process. Using models based on these properties, we estimate the possibilities that a wide field of view and large effective area ground-based monitoring facility has to probe VHE emission from GRBs. We show that the ability to monitor VHE transients with a nearly continuous scanning of the sky grants an opportunity to access simultaneous electromagnetic counterparts to Multi-Messenger triggers up to cosmological scales, in a way that is not available to IACTs., Proceedings of the 37th International Cosmic-Ray Conference. Ceramic composites based on alumina and zirconia have found a wide field of application in the present century in orthopedic joint replacements, and their use in dentistry is spreading. The development of this class of bioceramic composites was started in the 1980s, but the first clinical applications of the total hip replacement joint were introduced in the market only in the early 2000s. Since then, several composite systems were introduced in joint replacements. These materials are classified as Zirconia-Toughened Alumina if alumina is the main component or as Alumina-Toughened Zirconia when zirconia is the main component. In addition, some of them may contain a third phase based on strontium exa-aluminate. The flexibility in device design due to the excellent mechanical behavior of this class of bioceramics results in a number of innovative devices for joint replacements in the hip, the knee, and the shoulder, as well in dental implants. This paper gives an overview of the different materials available and on orthopedic and dental devices made out of oxide bioceramic composites today on the market or under development.

Visual-angle has been used as the conventional unit to determine the field-of-view (FOV) in traditional fundus photography. Recently emerging usage of eye-angle as the unit in wide field fundus photography creates confusion about FOV interpretation in instrumentation design and clinical application. This study aims to systematically derive the relationship between the visual-angle θv and eye-angle θe, and thus to enable reliable determination of the FOV in wide field fundus photography. FOV conversion ratio θe/θv, angular conversion ratio Δθe/Δθv, retinal conversion ratio Δd/Δθv, retinal distance and area are quantitatively evaluated. Systematic analysis indicates that reliable conversion between the θv and θe requires determined nodal point and spherical radius of the eye; and the conversion ratio is not linear from the central field to peripheral region. Based on the eye model with average parameters, both angular conversion (Δθe/Δθv) and retinal conversion (Δd/Δθv) ratios are observed to have a 1.51-fold difference at the central field and far peripheral region. A conversion table, including θe/θv, Δθe/Δθv, Δd/Δθv, retinal area and percentage ratio, is created for reliable assessment of imaging systems with variable FOV.

El presente articulo describe los resultados del proyecto de investigacion realizado para el Instituto de Hidrologia, Meteorologia y Estudios Ambientales IDEAM –Colombia–, donde se implemento una metodologia de ingenieria inversa encaminada a la aplicacion de tecnologias propias para generar un nuevo dispositivo capaz de realizar la medicion de temperatura y humedad del suelo partiendo del diseno del circuito electronico y llegando a la simulacion. Todo lo anterior basandose en un equipo existente para la identificacion de componentes electronicos, curvas de comportamiento, y senales de entrada y salida, con el objetivo de conceptualizar y generar bases para el diseno final. EnglishThe measurement of environmental variables turns out to be a wide field in which different techniques are used to capture the desired analog signals, all of the above in order to transform them and deliver them in such a way that their interpretation is clear. This article describes a research project, which was carried out for the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies IDEAM –Colombia–, where a reverse engineering methodology was implemented aimed at the application of proprietary technologies to generate a new device capable of measuring soil temperature and moisture, starting from the design of the electronic circuit and arriving at the simulation. All based on existing equipment for the identification of electronic components, performance curves, and input and output signals, this with the aim of conceptualizing and generating bases for the final design.

Measurement of optical properties is critical for understanding light-tissue interaction, properly interpreting measurement data, and gaining better knowledge of tissue physicochemical properties. However, conventional optical measuring techniques are limited in point measurement, which partly hinders the applications on characterizing spatial distribution and inhomogeneity of optical properties of biological tissues. Spatial-frequency domain imaging (SFDI), as an emerging non-contact, depth-varying and wide-field optical imaging technique, is capable of measuring the optical properties in a wide field-of-view on a pixel-by-pixel basis. This review first describes the typical SFDI system and the principle for estimating optical properties using the SFDI technique. Then, the applications of SFDI in the fields of biomedicine, as well as food and agriculture, are reviewed, including burn assessment, skin tissue evaluation, tumor tissue detection, brain tissue monitoring, and quality evaluation of agro-products. Finally, a discussion on the challenges and future perspectives of SFDI for optical property estimation is presented.

To study the topographic distribution of the short posterior ciliary arteries (SPCA) entry sites into the choroid in normal eyes using structural en-face swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Retrospective analysis of SS-OCT scans (wide-field structural SS-OCT 12 × 12 mm) of 13 healthy subjects was performed. Cross-sectional swept-source OCT scans derived from a volume scan were represented as en-face image display following the Choroid-Scleral Interface to obtain en-face OCT. SPCAs in their last scleral location before choroidal entrance were identified manually, counted and localized by two masked observers. Correlations between two masked observers were analyzed using inter- and intra-class correlation. Accuracy for the choroidal inner and outer border segmentation was 95–99%. Eighteen eyes from 13 normal subjects were included for SPCA analysis. The mean number of arteries was 13.8 ± 3.5 per eye. Thirty-six percent were in the center of the posterior pole image; however, 21% were in the temporal part of the posterior pole. Median accuracy of the detection is 0.94. The correlation between the two observers was fair (0.54). Our algorithm allows visualization of the SPCA at the posterior pole of the eye using wide-field en-face SS-OCT. It can also help the clinicians to study the SPCAs in numerous ocular diseases, particularly its relationship with focal choroidal diseases.

Over the past decades, development of engineering sciences has vastly contributed to advancements in medicine by production of numerous devices for diagnostics and treatment. In the middle of the 20th century, a new scientific field, biomedical engineering (BE), was established, which has developed into an extremely complex scientific discipline requiring a distinctive educational profile. Various study programs in BE have been established at universities around the world but also at several universities in Serbia. Also, intensive research in this field is performed at several scientific institutions in Serbia. In the present paper, short summaries of the research results of several groups of engineers and medical doctors are presented as an illustration of the wide field of BE research and possibilities of its application in diagnosis and therapy of various diseases.

Animal-borne video loggers are powerful tools for investigating animal behaviour because they directly record immediate and extended peripheral animal activities; however, typical video loggers capture only a limited area on one side of an animal being monitored owing to their narrow field of view. Here, we investigated the resting behaviour of humpback whales using an animal-borne omnidirectional video camera combined with a behavioural data logger. In the video logger footage, two non-tagged resting individuals, which did not spread their flippers or move their flukes, were observed above a tagged animal, representing an apparent bout of group resting. During the video logger recording, the swim speed was relatively slow (0.75 m s ), and the tagged animal made only a few strokes of very low amplitude during drift diving. We report the drift dives as resting behaviour specific to baleen whales as same as seals, sperm whales and loggerhead turtles. Overall, our study shows that an omnidirectional video logger is a valuable tool for interpreting animal ecology with improved accuracy owing to its ability to record a wide field of view. Functional understanding of visceral afferents is important for developing the new treatment to visceral hypersensitivity and pain. The sparse distribution of visceral afferents in dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) has challenged conventional electrophysiological recordings. Alternatively, Ca2+ indicators like GCaMP6f allow functional characterization by optical recordings. Here we report a turnkey microscopy system that enables simultaneous Ca2+ imaging at two parallel focal planes from intact DRG. By using consumer-grade optical components, the microscopy system is cost-effective and can be made broadly available without loss of capacity. It records low-intensity fluorescent signals at a wide field of view (1.9 × 1.3 mm) to cover a whole mouse DRG, with a high pixel resolution of 0.7 micron/pixel, a fast frame rate of 50 frames/sec, and the capability of remote focusing without perturbing the sample. The wide scanning range (100 mm) of the motorized sample stage allows convenient recordings of multiple DRGs in thoracic, lumbar, and sacral vertebrae. As a demonstration, we characterized mechanical neural encoding of visceral afferents innervating distal colon and rectum (colorectum) in GCaMP6f mice driven by VGLUT2 promotor. A post-processing routine is developed for conducting unsupervised detection of visceral afferent responses from GCaMP6f recordings, which also compensates the motion artifacts caused by mechanical stimulation of the colorectum. The reported system offers a cost-effective solution for high-throughput recordings of visceral afferent activities from a large volume of DRG tissues. We anticipate a wide application of this microscopy system to expedite our functional understanding of visceral innervations.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the clinical utility of the application of deep learning denoise algorithms on standard wide-field Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A) images. This was a retrospective case-series assessing forty-nine 10 × 10 mm OCT-A1 macula scans of 49 consecutive patients attending a medical retina clinic over a 6-month period. Thirty-seven patients had pathology, 13 had none. Retinal vascular layers were categorised into superficial or deep capillary plexus. For each category, the retinal experts compared the original standard image with the same image that had intelligent denoise applied. When analysing the Superficial Capillary Plexus (SCP), the denoised image was selected as “best for clinical assessment” in 98% of comparisons. No difference was established in the remaining 2%. On evaluating the Deep Capillary Plexus (DCP), the denoised image was preferred in 35% of comparisons. No difference was found in 65%. There was no evidence of new artefactual features nor loss of anatomical detail in denoised compared to the standard images. The wide-field denoise feature of the Canon Xephilio OCT-A1 produced scans that were clinically preferable over their original OCT-A images, especially for SCP assessment, without evidence for causing a new artefactual error.

Global anal cancer incidence is increasing. High resolution anoscopy (HRA) currently screens for anal cancer, although the definitive test remains unknown. To improve on intraluminal imaging of the anal canal, we conducted a first-in-human study to determine feasibility and safety of a high-resolution, wide field-of-view scanning endoscope. Fourteen patients, under an IRB-approved clinical study, underwent exam under anesthesia, HRA, and imaging with the experimental device. HRA findings were photographed using an in-line camera attached to the colposcope and compared with the scanning endoscope images. Patients were followed up within 2 weeks of the procedure. The imaging device is inserted into the anal canal and the intraluminal surface is digitally photographed in 10 s and uploaded to a computer monitor for review. Ten patients completed imaging with the device. Three patients were not imaged due to severe anal stenosis. One patient was not imaged due to technical device malfunction. The device images were compared to the HRA images. No adverse event attributable to the device was reported. The intraluminal scanning endoscope can be used for circumferential anal canal imaging and is safe for clinical use. Future clinical studies are needed to evaluate the performance of this device.

In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is a non-invasive imaging technique facilitating real-time acquisition of images from the live cornea and its layers with high resolution (1–2 µm) and high magnification (600 to 800-fold). IVCM is extensively used to examine the cornea at a cellular level, including the subbasal nerve plexus (SBNP). IVCM of the cornea has thus gained intense interest for probing ophthalmic and systemic diseases affecting peripheral nerves. One of the main drawbacks, however, is the small field of view of IVCM, preventing an overview of SBNP architecture and necessitating subjective image sampling of small areas of the SBNP for analysis. Here, we provide a high-quality dataset of the corneal SBNP reconstructed by automated mosaicking, with an average mosaic image size corresponding to 48 individual IVCM fields of view. The lack of quantitative information in image guided surgery determines still nowadays an unmet clinical need, leading to subjective assessments and variable outcomes. In this framework, we present the design of an endoscopic imaging system and the application of deep learning algorithms for real-time quantitation of tissues optical properties. The instrument is based on deep learning-optimized 3D profile corrected “Single Snapshot imaging of Optical Properties”(3D-SSOP). A first benchtop prototype has been validated on tissue mimicking phantoms and is currently being integrated on a surgical robot for pre-clinical trials on small animals.

Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) is the only dedicated, >10 m class, multi-object facility under development on the best site in the Northern Hemisphere. MSE is designed to simultaneously obtain 4,332 spectra in three resolution modes in the optical and NIR. The design attributes of a wide field of view, a high multiplex capability, and the use of optical fibers to transport the light from the prime focus to two suites of spectrographs, mandate an efficient and precise science calibration process to account for the throughput and imaging variations between the astronomical targets at the detectors. To achieve MSE's science goals, the calibration process must enable accurate sky subtraction, wavelength correction, and spectrophotometry. In this paper, we continue our discussion on the science calibration requirements and procedures, and provide an update to the adopted calibration strategy, including likely operational features and hardware. We present a wide-field study of the globular cluster system (GCS) of the field lenticular galaxy NGC 1172, based on observations from GMOS/Gemini (optical), FourStar/Magellan (NIR), and archival data from ACS/HST (optical). This analysis covers the full extension of the GCS, and results in a value of specific frequency (S_N=8.6 +/- 1.5) peculiarly high for an intermediate-mass galaxy in a low-density environment such as this one. We find that the GCS appears to be bimodal, although the colour distribution is narrow and does not allow for an accurate separation of the subpopulations. However, the combination of optical and NIR filters allows us to obtain an estimation of the metallicity distribution based on the photometry, which supports bimodality. We conclude that the presence of a large fraction of metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) and the high specific frequency point to NGC 1172 having accreted a significant amount of GCs from low-mass satellites in the past., 12 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Optical scheme of the new wide-field telescope of the telescope network of Odessa Obser- vatory is described.The telescope optical layout is designed as a mirror-lens system with a Ross-type two-lens corrector and a hyperbolic primary mirror with diameter of 600 mm. The prime focus corrector is capable of imaging a field of 2 degrees, the root- mean-square radius of the diffraction spot is about 4.5 µm, which is 2.5 times larger than that of the diffraction-limited spot (Airy disk).

Fluorescent nanodiamonds containing nitrogen-vacancy centers have attracted attention as nanoprobes for temperature measurements in microenvironments, potentially enabling the measurement of intracellular temperature distributions and temporal changes. However, to date, the time resolution and accuracy of the temperature determinations using fluorescent nanodiamonds have been insufficient for wide-field fluorescence imaging. Here, we describe a method for highly accurate wide-field temperature imaging using fluorescent nanodiamonds for optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) measurements. We performed a Monte Carlo simulation to determine the optimal frequency sweep range for ODMR temperature determination. We then applied this sweep range to fluorescent nanodiamonds. As a result, the temperature determination accuracies were improved by a factor ~1.5. Our result paves the way for the contribution of quantum sensors to cell biology for understanding, for example, differentiation in multicellular systems.

The paper presents the results of the largest to date VLBI absolute astrometry campaign of observations of 13,645 radio sources with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). Of them, 7220 have been detected, including 6755 target sources that have never been observed with VLBI before. This makes the present VLBI catalogue the largest ever published. Positions of the target sources have been determined with the median uncertainty 1.7 mas, and 15,599 images of 7179 sources have been generated. Unlike to previous absolute radio astrometry campaigns, observations were made at 4.3 and 7.6 GHz simultaneously using a single wide-band receiver. Because of the fine spectral and time resolutions, the field of view was 4 to 8 arcminutes -- much greater than 10 to 20 arcseconds in previous surveys. This made possible to use input catalogues with low position accuracy and detect a compact component in extended sources. Unlike to previous absolute astrometry campaigns, both steep and flat spectrum sources were observed. The observations were scheduled in the so-called fill-in mode to fill the gaps between other high priority programs. Metalenses are nanostructured surfaces that mimic the functionality of optical elements. Many exciting demonstrations have already been made, for example, focusing into diffraction-limited spots or achromatic operation over a wide wavelength range. The key functionality that is yet missing, however, and that is most important for applications such as smartphones or virtual reality, is the ability to perform the imaging function with a single element over a wide field of view. Here, by relaxing the constraint on diffraction-limited resolution, we demonstrate the ability of single-layer metalenses to perform wide field of view (WFOV) imaging while maintaining high resolution suitable for most applications. We also discuss the WFOV physical properties and, in particular, we show that such a WFOV metalens mimics a spherical lens in the limit of infinite radius and infinite refractive index. Finally, we use Fourier analysis to explain the dependence of the FOV on the numerical aperture.

PurposeEarly detection and treatment are important management strategies for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The purpose of this study was to determine the sensitivity and specificity in detecting neovascular AMD using two wide-field imaging systems: ClarusTM (CLARUS 500™, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) and Optos®(Optos California®, Optos PLC, Dunfermline, United Kingdom), compared to conventional digital fundus photographs.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 109 eyes of 73 consecutive patients with neovascular AMD, who underwent standard examination and multimodal imaging, including fundus photography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Unmasked graders utilized slit-lamp biomicroscopy and OCT to diagnose neovascular AMD. Masked graders evaluated ClarusTM, Optos®, and digital fundus photograph methods to determine the presence of choroidal neovascularization associated with AMD. Sensitivity and specificity analyses were performed using combined fundoscopy and OCT as the reference standard.ResultsNinety eyes were diagnosed with neovascular AMD and the remaining 19 eyes were normal based on the reference standard. Of these, neovascular AMD was detected using ClarusTM in 94.4% (85/90). The sensitivities of Optos® and digital fundus photographs were 81.1% (73/90) and 87.8% (79/90), respectively. The specificities using ClarusTM, Optos®, and digital fundus photographs were 89.5% (17/19), 94.7% (18/19), and 89.5% (17/19), respectively.ConclusionClarusTM, with its ability to image high-resolution wide field fundus, was considered superior for diagnosing neovascular AMD with high sensitivity and specificity. It may be a useful screening tool for early detection of neovascular AMD, facilitating prompt referral and treatment.
