14. 'I Am Responsible, I Will Do Well!'

Abstract

A study of the relationship between student perceptions and learning behaviors attempted to answer the questions: (1) What are the perceptions of academic responsibility of the students? (2) How different are their perceptions when school, class, level of performance, and gender are different? and (3) To what extent is their perception of responsibility related to their learning outcome? Subjects, 291 male and female adolescent students from five schools in Singapore, completed the Intellectual Achievement Responsibility (IAR) Scale. Results indicated that the students have a sense of responsibility and are more likely to accept blame for failure than personal credit for success. This response is stronger among high achievers and top classes than for lower achievers and classes, and also stronger among girls than boys. No correlation was found between students' responses to successful or positive events and performance, but there was a high correlation between their responses to negative events and performance. This outcome suggests that those who accept greater blame for failure are motivated to work harder to achieve. Contains 10 references. (DMG)

15. Learning from One Another: Motivating and Demotivating Learners in the Classroom.

Abstract

Singapore primary and secondary school teachers (n=76) attending an inservice education course on motivating learners identified and described two critical lessons: one in which the teachers successfully motivated students and another in which they failed to motivate pupils. Participants recalled those critical lessons in a reflective and self-evaluative manner. Each lesson was analyzed by an assigned "critic" and discussed by the group. Analysis of the lessons revealed that primary school teachers felt that "pupil involvement" and "tuning in" were most frequently successful in motivating pupils to learn. Among secondary school teachers, "teacher being prepared,""topic relevance," and "teacher concern/awareness of needs" were contributing factors. At the primary level, commonly cited reasons for motivation failure were "teacher doing the usual" and "no tuning in." At the secondary level, the most frequently reported cause was "teacher being unprepared." Being able to motivate learning was felt to result from "knowledge of, concern, and love for children"; "teacher attributes"; "effort and preparation"; "lively lessons"; and "teacher awareness of learning needs." Abstract

We present the findings of the Machine Learning Model Attribution Challenge. Fine-tuned machine learning models may derive from other trained models without obvious attribution characteristics. In this challenge, participants identify the publicly-available base models that underlie a set of anonymous, fine-tuned large language models (LLMs) using only textual output of the models. Contestants aim to correctly attribute the most fine-tuned models, with ties broken in the favor of contestants whose solutions use fewer calls to the fine-tuned models' API. The most successful approaches were manual, as participants observed similarities between model outputs and developed attribution heuristics based on public documentation of the base models, though several teams also submitted automated, statistical solutions.

Abstract

Intracranial stenosis is prevalent among Asians and constitutes a common cause of cerebral ischemia. While the best medical therapy carries stroke recurrence rates in excess of 10% per year, trials with intracranial stenting have been associated with unacceptable peri-procedural ischemic events. Cerebral ischemic events are strongly related to the severity of intracranial stenosis, which is high in patients with severe intracranial stenosis with poor vasodilatory reserve. Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) therapy is known to improve myocardial perfusion by facilitating the development of collateral blood vessels in the heart. In this randomized clinical trial, we evaluate whether EECP therapy may be useful in patients with severe stenosis of intracranial internal carotid (ICA) or middle cerebral artery (MCA). The review of literature, methods of evaluation, status of currently used therapeutic approaches, and trial protocol have been presented. Abstract

As the incidence of obesity and associated negative health consequences is rising, it becomes crucial to monitor the dietary choices of individuals. Unfortunately, traditional methods to collect this information involve collecting food frequency questionnaires from individuals using paper. Electronic food trackers have been developed to collect food data, but they require participants to manually label and describe the content of their meals, and which may be difficult for researchers to interpret in a standardized fashion. Machine learning, however, provides an easy and efficient method for both participants and researchers to label food items with standardized descriptions. This project aims to create a prototype phone application that can identify and label photos of apples. This is done by making a machine learning model through Turicreate, a python module, which is then implemented into an iOS app through Xcode and Swift. The modules used in Swift include CoreML and AVFoundation. This machine learning application will be incorporated with a MealLogger phone app that is also under development. The MealLogger app will be used to keep track of participants' calorie intake and other personal details throughout the sleep study. The machine learning model will present several potential identities of the foods found in the photo, and the user will only need to select the correct option. This will be a user-friendly method for participants to easily log their food consumption without the hard work of manually inputting each and every description. Some limitations to this project include the wide variety of food, including those within different cultures. To deal with this, the model will include the most generic food categories, which the participant may select, and produce a drop-down menu of more specific dishes under that specified category, with the option of self-input. Additional questionnaires may be implemented according to the food type selected This will allow the process to be quick and easy, but also specific for the purpose of analysis. The release of the application will require a much longer process, but the machine learning prototype presents a first step toward an application that may change data analysis for researchers interested in collecting food intake from individuals living in the real world.

21. Student Attitudes to Traditional and Online Methods of Delivery

Abstract

Rapid developments in education technology have provided educators and students new options in a constantly changing, competitive teaching and learning environment. As the number of online teaching resources continue to increase, research into student attitudes toward traditional and online methods of delivery is important in order to determine whether the increased usage of technology in the curriculum has been beneficial to their learning. This paper investigates the student perceptions of these two methods of delivery in a first-year introductory accounting unit in a number of key areas. These include their perceptions of learning effectiveness, motivation and impact on assessment outcomes. The importance of social interaction and their preference for online learning is also covered. This preliminary analysis of student attitudes will determine whether there are statistically significant differences between face-to-face and online learning options and preference for online learning technology between gender groups. In addition, this paper investigates whether there are statistically significant relationships between face-to-face or online learning options and preference for online learning technology in gender groups.

Abstract

Introduction: Microbes in the built environment have been implicated as a source of infectious diseases. Bacterial culture is the standard method for assessing the risk of exposure to pathogens in urban environments, but this method only accounts for <1% of the diversity of bacteria. Recently, full-length 16S rRNA gene analysis using nanopore sequencing has been applied for microbial evaluations, resulting in a rise in the development of long-read taxonomic tools for species-level classification. Regarding their comparative performance, there is, however, a lack of information. Methods: Here, we aim to analyze the concordance of the microbial community in the urban environment inferred by multiple taxonomic classifiers, including ARGpore2, Emu, Kraken2/Bracken and NanoCLUST, using our 16S-nanopore dataset generated by MegaBLAST, as well as assess their abilities to identify culturable species based on the conventional culture results. Results: According to our results, NanoCLUST was preferred for 16S microbial profiling because it had a high concordance of dominant species and a similar microbial profile to MegaBLAST, whereas Kraken2/Bracken, which had similar clustering results as NanoCLUST, was also desirable. Second, for culturable species identification, Emu with the highest accuracy (81.2%) and F1 score (29%) for the detection of culturable species was suggested. Discussion: In addition to generating datasets in complex communities for future benchmarking studies, our comprehensive evaluation of the taxonomic classifiers offers recommendations for ongoing microbial community research, particularly for complex communities using nanopore 16S rRNA sequencing. Telepresence robots are being increasingly used in long-term care (LTC) homes for virtual visits between families and residents. This study investigated the impacts and experiences of residents and their families using a telepresence robot (Double 3) for 4 to 12 months during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 51 participants were recruited through purposive sampling, including 9 residents, 15 family members, and 27 staff from 4 LTC homes in British Columbia, Canada. Conversational interviews were conducted with residents and family members. Focus groups and one-to-one interviews were held with frontline staff. Thematic analysis was performed, with five themes identified: (1) Stay connected, (2) Regain autonomy, (3) Relieve caregiver burden, (4) Environmental and technical issues, and (5) Scheduling concerns. This article identifies behaviors that instill compassion in its many facets. Each activity corresponds to one of the letters spelling out COMPASSION. Abstract

Background: The COVID‐19 pandemic has significant impact on long‐term care (LTC) residents' health and well‐being. Objectives: This study investigated resident experiences of loneliness during the COVID‐19 pandemic in Canadian LTC homes to offer lessons learned and implications. Methods: 15 residents and 16 staff members were recruited from two large urban Canadian LTC homes with large outbreaks and fatalities. We used a telepresence robot to conduct one‐on‐one semi‐structured interviews with participants remotely. We applied the Collaborative Action Research (CAR) methodology and report the early phase of CAR focused on collecting data and reporting findings to inform actions for change. Thematic analysis was performed to identify themes. Results: Four themes were identified. The first two themes characterise what commonly generated feelings of loneliness amongst residents, including (1) social isolation and missing their family and friends and (2) feeling hopeless and grieving for lives lost. The second two themes describe what helped residents alleviate loneliness, including (3) social support and (4) creating opportunities for recreation and promoting positivity. Conclusions: Residents living in LTC experienced significant social isolation and grief during the pandemic that resulted in loneliness and other negative health consequences. Implications for practice: Promoting meaningful connection, safe recreational activities and a positive atmosphere in LTC homes during the pandemic may help mitigate residents' experiences of loneliness due to social isolation and/or grief and enhance their quality of life. Traditional office buildings use a variety of primary light sources (e.g., LED/fluorescent lights). As interest in LEED certified office buildings increase and research has shown that enhanced lighting design improves human performance and alertness (Viola et al., 2008; Juslén & Tenner, 2005; Edwards & Torcellini, 2002), more office buildings are incorporating a daylighting design. We investigated the differences between employee performance and alertness in two different building types (daylight vs. artificial light). We hypothesized that employee performance and sleep duration would be improved in a building designed to increase exposure to natural daylight compared to traditional office settings.

Abstract

Salt marshes are recognized as blue carbon ecosystems for their ability to rapidly sequester organic carbon (OC) via sedimentation. For this reason, there is growing interest in managing these systems to help mitigate climate change. However, in order for sediment accretion to offset ongoing CO2 emissions, organic matter undergoing burial must be derived from contemporary primary production. To investigate the provenance of OC sequestered by salt marshes, we analyzed the concentration and isotope composition (δ13C and Δ14C) of sedimentary OC in two minerogenic marshes in San Francisco Bay, California, USA. Data from the low marsh dominated by Spartinaspp. show that autochthonous OC is entering the sediment matrix and may in part be stabilized through incorporation into the mineral‐bound pool. However, the sedimentary OC stock as a whole is dominated by material with low values of δ13C (~ −20 to −25‰) and Δ14C (~ 100 to −300‰) indicating a preponderance of allochthonous OC that was retained in other OC reservoirs for 102 to 103 years prior to deposition in the marsh. Diagenetic modeling of OC and its δ13C values further shows that autochthonous OC is lost from the sediment profile at a much faster rate than allochthonous OC. The rapid turnover of contemporary autochthonous OC ("fast carbon") relative to the apparent stability of old allochthonous OC ("slow carbon") suggest that carbon burial at these sites is largely decoupled from ongoing CO2 emissions. Abstract

Summary: Sleep inertia is the brief period of performance impairment and reduced alertness experienced after waking, especially from slow‐wave sleep. We assessed the efficacy of polychromatic short‐wavelength‐enriched light to improve vigilant attention, alertness and mood immediately after waking from slow‐wave sleep at night. Twelve participants (six female, 23.3 ± 4.2 years) maintained an actigraphy‐confirmed sleep schedule of 8.5 hr for 5 nights, and 5 hr for 1 night prior to an overnight laboratory visit. In the laboratory, participants were awakened from slow‐wave sleep, and immediately exposed to either dim, red ambient light (control) or polychromatic short‐wavelength‐enriched light (light) for 1 hr in a randomized crossover design. They completed a 5‐min Psychomotor Vigilance Task, the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale, and Visual Analogue Scales of mood at 2, 17, 32 and 47 min after waking. Following this testing period, lights were turned off and participants returned to sleep. They were awakened from their subsequent slow‐wave sleep period and received the opposite condition. Compared with the control condition, participants exposed to light had fewer Psychomotor Vigilance Task lapses (χ2[1] = 5.285, p = 0.022), reported feeling more alert (Karolinska Sleepiness Scale: F1,77 = 4.955, p = 0.029; Visual Analogue Scalealert: F1,77 = 8.226, p = 0.005), and reported improved mood (Visual Analogue Scalecheerful: F1,77 = 8.615, p = 0.004). There was no significant difference in sleep‐onset latency between conditions following the testing period (t10 = 1.024, p = 0.330). Our results suggest that exposure to polychromatic short‐wavelength‐enriched light immediately after waking from slow‐wave sleep at night may help improve vigilant attention, subjective alertness, and mood. I worked on the first Asian American Pacific Islander Television Report, and that was with Asian Americans Advancing Justice. This panel was hosted by the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University and the Center for Asian American Studies at University of Texas at Austin on September 9, 2021. I think that for Asian Americans over the past ten years or so, maybe twenty years, the main focus of political activism has been self-serving for the upwardly mobile, upper middle class Asian Americans. Adult volunteers (n=1,215) in Singapore and San Francisco (California) rated the degree of obviousness of 12 findings of process-product research on teaching. Respondents could not always distinguish true findings from opposites. Differences in gender, knowledge about teaching, and cultural background had inconsistent effects on judgments of obviousness. 44. Trainees' Perceptions of Competence and Control in Teaching.

Abstract

Perceptions of one's competence and control in a task are related to one's confidence in doing a task and attitude towards it. In teaching, it is assumed to be very important that teachers view themselves as competent in and in control of their teaching tasks. To investigate trainees' perceptions of control and competence, a short questionnaire was given to two tutorial groups of teacher trainees in the Certificate of Education programme for training primary school teachers. They were asked before going out to practice teaching whether they could teach well and to explain their perceptions of two teaching outcomes. After seven weeks of experience and practice in the schools, the same trainees were asked to give their perceptions of competence and control in their teaching performance. Comparisons of their perceptions before and after teaching practice indicate the consistencies of causal attributions in teaching. Findings of this study provide insights to teacher educators and to the developers of teacher training programmes. (Author/JD)

45. Pre-Existing Domain-Specific Knowledge as Presage Variable for the Prediction of Trainees' Performance.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is twofold: (1) to examine teacher trainees' knowledge of teaching prior to training and its relationship to performance in the training program; and (2) to determine if there is a set of identifiable domain-specific knowledge related to course performance. Since trainees enter teacher training programs with prior knowledge and beliefs about teaching and learning, their learning and practice will be influenced by such pre-existing knowledge. This paper reports an initial attempt to explore prior domain-specific knowledge of high and low performance trainees. It was hypothesized that trainees' preexisting knowledge in teaching helps performance in course work. Approximately 300 trainees in a secondary school program in Singapore identified one positive and one negative critical incident after viewing a videotaped lesson. Findings suggest: high performance trainees are more critical than low performance trainees with respect to teachers' planning; lower performance trainees are more impressed by teaching aids, interaction, and communication in the classroom; relationships of trainees' comments on the videotaped lesson as a measure of preexisting domain-specific knowledge and their training performance provide insights into the prediction of teaching performance and the selection of trainees.
