Augmented reality (AR) offers potential advantages for intensifying environmental context awareness and augmenting students' experiences in real-world environments by dynamically overlapping digital materials with a real-world environment. However, some challenges to AR learning environments have been described, such as participants' cognitive overload and the ways to provide assistance in constructing the presented learning materials. In this study, a mindtool-based AR learning system was developed, based on the repertory grid method and the contiguity principle of multimedia learning, for assisting students in constructing their knowledge in a natural science course. Furthermore, an experiment was carried out on an elementary school natural science course to compare the influences of this method with those of the conventional AR learning system on students' learning effectiveness. The experimental results show that the designated approach effectively promoted the students' learning achievements, and no significant difference existed between the mindtool-based AR learning system and the conventional AR learning system in terms of students' cognition load and satisfaction degree; moreover, both the experimental group and the control group perceived low cognition load during the learning activity and rated their own AR learning systems as being highly satisfactory.

Facilitating students' deep-strategy behaviors and positive learning performances of science inquiry is an important and challenging educational issue. In this study, a contextual science inquiry approach is proposed for developing a 3D experiential game to cope with this problem. To evaluate the impacts of the game on students' science learning approaches, learning achievements and problem-solving awareness as well as the learning behavioral patterns of the students with different learning achievements, a quasi-experiment was conducted in an elementary school geoscience course. The participants were two classes of sixth graders. One class was the experimental group who learned with the 3D experiential game, and the other was the control group who learned with the conventional technology-enhanced learning approach. The experimental results showed that the students learning with the 3D experiential gaming system showed better learning achievements, problem-solving tendency, deep learning strategies, and deep learning motive than those who learned with the conventional technology-enhanced learning approach. Moreover, the higher-achievement students showed more behavioral patterns of deep learning strategies than the lower-achievement students. The findings of this study provide a good reference for helping lower-achievement students improve their learning performance.

Background: Bioengineered cartilage is a developing therapeutic to repair cartilage defects. The matrix must be rich in collagen type II and aggrecan and mechanically competent, withstanding compressive and shearing loads. Biomechanical properties in native articular cartilage depend on the zonal architecture consisting of 3 zones: superficial, middle, and deep. The superficial zone chondrocytes produce lubricating proteoglycan-4, whereas the deep zone chondrocytes produce collagen type X, which allows for integration into the subchondral bone. Zonal and chondrogenic expression is lost after cell number expansion. Current cell-based therapies have limited capacity to regenerate the zonal structure of native cartilage. Hypothesis: Both passaged superficial and deep zone chondrocytes at high density can form bioengineered cartilage that is rich in collagen type II and aggrecan; however, only passaged superficial zone–derived chondrocytes will express superficial zone–specific proteoglycan-4, and only passaged deep zone–derived chondrocytes will express deep zone–specific collagen type X. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Superficial and deep zone chondrocytes were isolated from bovine joints, and zonal subpopulations were separately expanded in 2-dimensional culture. At passage 2, superficial and deep zone chondrocytes were seeded, separately, in scaffold-free 3-dimensional culture within agarose wells and cultured in redifferentiation media. Results: Monolayer expansion resulted in loss of expression for proteoglycan-4 and collagen type X in passaged superficial and deep zone chondrocytes, respectively. By passage 2, superficial and deep zone chondrocytes had similar expression for dedifferentiated molecules collagen type I and tenascin C. Redifferentiation of both superficial and deep zone chondrocytes led to the expression of collagen type II and aggrecan in both passaged chondrocyte populations. However, only redifferentiated deep zone chondrocytes expressed collagen type X, and only redifferentiated superficial zone chondrocytes expressed and secreted proteoglycan-4. Additionally, redifferentiated deep zone chondrocytes produced a thicker and more robust tissue compared with superficial zone chondrocytes. Conclusion: The recapitulation of the primary phenotype from passaged zonal chondrocytes introduces a novel method of functional bioengineering of cartilage that resembles the zone-specific biological properties of native cartilage. Clinical Relevance: The recapitulation of the primary phenotype in zonal chondrocytes could be a possible method to tailor bioengineered cartilage to have zone-specific expression. Augmented reality (AR) has been recognized as a potential technology to help students link what they are observing in the real world to their prior knowledge. One of the most challenging issues of AR-based learning is the provision of effective strategy to help students focus on what they need to observe in the field. In this study, a competitive gaming approach is proposed to support AR-based learning activities conducted in real-world contexts. An experiment has been conducted on an elementary school ecology course to explore the effectiveness of the proposed approach in comparison with the conventional AR-based mobile learning approach in field trips. The experimental results show that the AR-based gaming approach can improve not only students' learning attitudes, but also their learning performance on the field trip. Accordingly, discussions and some suggestions for future work are provided.

Context-aware ubiquitous learning has been recognized as being a promising approach that enables students to interact with real-world learning targets with supports from the digital world. Several researchers have indicated the importance of providing learning guidance or hints to individual students during the context-aware ubiquitous learning process. In this study, an expert system-based guidance approach is proposed for conducting effective context-aware ubiquitous learning activities based on the domain knowledge provided by experienced teachers. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, an experiment on a learning activity in a senior high school Geosciences course has been conducted. The experimental results show that, with this new approach, the students' learning achievements have been significantly improved in terms of several cognitive processes in Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives, such as "analyzing" and "evaluating." Consequently, it is concluded that the context-aware ubiquitous learning system with the interactive guiding approach has benefited the students in enhancing their higher order thinking competences. In this paper, an online game was developed in the form of a competitive board game for conducting web-based problem-solving activities. The participants of the game determined their move by throwing a dice. Each location of the game board corresponds to a gaming task, which could be a web-based information-searching question or a mini-game; the former was used to guide the participants to search for information to answer a series of questions related to the target learning issue, while the latter was used to provide supplementary materials during the gaming process. To evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, an experiment was conducted on an elementary school natural science course. The experimental results showed that the proposed approach not only significantly promoted the flow experience, learning attitudes, learning interest and technology acceptance degree of the students, but also improved their learning achievements in the web-based problem-solving activity. Concept maps have been widely employed for helping students organise their knowledge as well as evaluating their knowledge structures in a wide range of subject matters. Although researchers have recognised concept maps as being an important educational tool, past experiences have also revealed the difficulty of evaluating the correctness of a concept map. It usually takes days or weeks for teachers to manually evaluate the concept maps developed by students; consequently, the students cannot receive timely feedback from the teachers, which not only affects their learning schedules, but also significantly influences the students' learning achievements. In this paper, a computer-based concept map-oriented learning strategy with real-time assessment and feedback is proposed in order to cope with the problems mentioned above. Our approach provides immediate evaluation of concept maps and gives also real-time feedback to the students. An experiment has been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this new strategy in comparison with the conventional computer-based concept map approach. It is found that our innovative approach can be significantly beneficial to promote learning achievements as well as the learning attitudes of students.

The aim of nursing education is to foster in students the competence of applying integrated knowledge with clinical skills to the application domains. In the traditional approach, in-class knowledge learning and clinical skills training are usually conducted separately, such that the students might not be able to integrate the knowledge and the skills in performing standard nursing procedures. Therefore, it is important to develop an integrated curriculum for teaching standard operating procedures in physical assessment courses. In this study, a context-aware mobile learning system is developed for nursing training courses. During the learning activities, each student is equipped with a mobile device; moreover, sensing devices are used to detect whether the student has conducted the operations on the correct location of the dummy patient's body for assessing the physical status of the specified disease. The learning system not only guides individual students to perform each operation of the physical assessment procedure on dummy patients, but also provides instant feedback and supplementary materials to them if the operations or the operating sequence is incorrect. The experimental results show that the students' learning outcomes are notably improved by utilizing the mobile learning system for nursing training. (Contains 6 tables and 9 figures.)

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare the performance of six clinical physiological-based scores, including the pre-endoscopy Rockall score, shock index (SI), age shock index (age SI), Rapid Acute Physiology Score (RAPS), Rapid Emergency Medicine Score (REMS), and Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS), in predicting in-hospital mortality in elderly and very elderly patients in the emergency department (ED) with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (AUGIB). Materials and Methods: Patients older than 65 years who visited the ED with a clinical diagnosis of AUGIB were enrolled prospectively from July 2016 to July 2021. The six scores were calculated and compared with in-hospital mortality. Results: A total of 336 patients were recruited, of whom 40 died. There is a significant difference between the patients in the mortality group and survival group in terms of the six scoring systems. MEWS had the highest area under the curve (AUC) value (0.82). A subgroup analysis was performed for a total of 180 very elderly patients (i.e., older than 75 years), of whom 27 died. MEWS also had the best predictive performance in this subgroup (AUC, 0.82). Conclusions: This simple, rapid, and obtainable-by-the-bed parameter could assist emergency physicians in risk stratification and decision making for this vulnerable group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease that initially manifests as loss of the superficial zone (SZ) of articular cartilage. SZ chondrocytes (SZC) differ in morphology from other chondrocytes as they are elongated and oriented parallel to the tissue surface. Proteoglycan 4 (PRG4) and tenascin C (TNC) are molecules expressed by SZC, which have been shown to be chondroprotective. Identification of the signalling pathway(s) regulating expression of SZ molecules may lead to a therapeutic target that can be used to delay or prevent the onset of OA. The hypothesis of this study is that expression of SZ molecules are regulated in part, by the CDC42‐actin‐myocardin‐related transcription factor‐A (MRTF‐A) signaling pathway. SZC from bovine metacarpal‐phalangeal joints were isolated and grown in monolayer culture. Each target in the CDC42‐actin‐MRTF‐A pathway was inhibited and the effect on cell shape, actin cytoskeleton status, and expression of PRG4 and TNC were determined. Treatment with the CDC42 inhibitor ML141 decreased PRG4 and TNC expression, and correlated with increased cell circularity and G‐/F‐actin ratio. PRG4 and TNC expression were differentially regulated by actin depolymerizing agents, latrunculin B and cytochalasin D. Chemical inhibition of MRTF‐A resulted in decreased expression of both PRG4 and TNC; however, specific knockdown by small interfering RNA only decreased expression of TNC indicating that TNC, but not PRG4, is regulated by MRTF‐A. Although PRG4 and TNC expression are both regulated by CDC42 and actin, it appears to occur through different downstream signaling pathways. Industry 4.0 is an important trend in factory automation nowadays. Among the Automated-Storage-and-Retrieval-System (ASRS) is one of the most important issues for industry. It is widely used in a variety of industries for a variety of storage applications in factories and warehouses. However, the cost of constructing an ASRS is so high that most small/medium enterprises cannot afford it. A forklift system is a cheaper alternative to a complicated ASRS. In this work, a new pallet detection method that uses an Adaptive Structure Feature (ASF) and Direction Weighted Overlapping (DWO) ratio to allow forklifts to pick up a pallet is proposed, using a monocular vision system on the forklift. Combining the ASF and DWO ratio for pallet detection, the proposed method removes most of the non-stationary (dynamic) background and significantly increases the processing efficiency. A Haar like-based Adaboost scheme uses an AS for pallets algorithm to detect pallets. It detects the pallet in a dark environment. Finally, by calculating the DWO ratio between the detected pallets and tracking records, it avoids erroneous candidates during object tracking. Therefore, this work improves the pallet detection to solve the problem with an effective design. β-1,6- N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase 2 ( GCNT2), which encodes a key glycosyltransferase for blood group I antigen synthesis, is induced upon epithelial-mesenchymal transition ( EMT). Our results indicate that GCNT2 is upregulated upon EMT induced with epidermal growth factor and basic FGF in cultured human colon cancer cells. GCNT2 knockdown or overexpression decreases or increases, respectively, malignancy-related characteristics of colon cancer cells and I antigen levels. MiR-199a/b-5p is markedly downregulated upon EMT in colon cancer cells. Here, we find that miR-199a/b-5p consistently regulates GCNT2 expression in reporter assays and that it binds directly to the GCNT2 3′ untranslated region intracellularly in RNA-induced silencing complex-trap assays. Overexpression of miR-199a/b-5p decreases GCNT2 expression and suppresses I antigen production. Based on these findings, we propose that miR-199a/b-5p regulates GCNT2 and I antigen expression in colon cancer cells undergoing EMT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diode string was used as the effective on-chip electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection device. To reduce the leakage current and the layout area, an area-efficient and low-leakage diode string is proposed in this paper. The standard steps of P− implantation and silicide blocking in CMOS process are used in this design to realize the proposed diode string with stacked P−/N+ diodes. The test devices of the proposed design have successfully been verified in the silicon chip. With the high ESD robustness, low leakage current, and small layout area, the proposed diode string can be a better solution for on-chip ESD protection applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes an effective real-time video uplink (UL) framework for mobile wireless camera networks (WCN) over an orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA), based infrastructure. Mobile wireless camera stations (CSs) transmit their videos in real time to a base station (BS) so that these live video streams can be archived or fed to subscribers to facilitate real-time video monitoring. Based on the utility function driven by video quality, the target bit rate resulting in the highest possible utility is quickly set for each UL video. To optimize system performance, a real-time video packet scheduler and a spectral-efficient resource-allocation policy are derived. This scheduler is also capable of exploiting the inherent diversity gain due to channel variations. Using fourth-generation (4G) mobile network protocols and a realistic wireless channel model, it is demonstrated through our extensive simulations that our proposed method can significantly enhance utility, boost spectral efficiency, and stabilize video quality. Table-lookup-and-addition methods provide multiplierless function evaluation using multiple lookup tables and a multioperand adder. In spite of their high-speed operation, they are only practical in low-precision applications due to the fast increase in table size with precision width. In this brief, we present two methods for table size reduction by decomposing the original table of initial values into two or three tables with fewer entries and/or smaller bit width. The proposed table decompositions do not incur any extra rounding errors so that the original table can be completely recovered. Experimental results demonstrate significant saving of table sizes compared with the best of the prior designs of the multipartite methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which analyzes the research status and trend of digital game-based learning (DGBL) from 2001 to 2010. It also examines the advancement of DGBL articles that are published in seven major technology-based learning journals from 2001 to 2010. Findings of the study are said to be good references for those who plan to contribute to the DGBL studies which could be helpful to policymakers in both government or professional organizations in making plans to support the development of educational game industries.
