Abstract Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been consistently supporting nanosciences and nanotechnologies for over 30 years and is used in many fields from condensed matter physics to biology. It enables the measurement of very weak forces at the nanoscale, thus elucidating the interactions at play in fundamental processes. Here, we leverage the combined benefits of micro/nanoelectromechanical systems and cavity optomechanics to fabricate a sensor for dynamic mode AFM at a frequency above 100 MHz. This frequency is two decades above the fastest commercial AFM probes, suggesting an opportunity for measuring forces at timescales unexplored thus far. The fabrication is achieved using very-large-scale integration technologies derived from photonic silicon circuits. The probe’s optomechanical ring cavity is coupled to a 1.55 μm laser light and features a 130 MHz mechanical resonance mode with a quality factor of 900 in air. A limit of detection in the displacement of 3 × 10−16 m/√Hz is obtained, enabling the detection of the Brownian motion of the probe and paving the way for force sensing experiments in the dynamic mode with a working vibration amplitude in the picometer range. When inserted in a custom AFM instrument embodiment, this optomechanical sensor demonstrates the capacity to perform force-distance measurements and to maintain a constant interaction strength between the tip and sample, an essential requirement for AFM applications. Experiments indeed show a stable closed-loop operation with a setpoint of 4 nN/nm for an unprecedented subpicometer vibration amplitude, where the tip–sample interaction is mediated by a stretched water meniscus.

A MEMS approach to obtain an efficient tool for the evaluation of the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of wastewaters is introduced. Its operating principle is based on the measurement of oxygen concentration in water samples containing organic pollutants and specific bacteria. The microsystem has been designed to perform multiple and parallel measurements in a poly-wells microfluidic device. The monitoring of the bacterial activity is ensured by optical sensors incorporated in each well of the fluidic network. By using an optode sensor, it is hereby demonstrated that this approach is efficient to measure organic pollutants by testing different Luria Bertani buffer dilutions. These results also show that it is possible to reduce the duration of measurements from 5 d (BOD5) of the standard approach to few hours, typically 3 h–5 h. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microcontact printing has become a versatile soft lithography technique used to produce molecular micro- and nano-patterns consisting of a large range of different biomolecules. Despite intensive research over the last decade and numerous applications in the fields of biosensors, microarrays and biomedical applications, the large-scale implementation of microcontact printing is still an issue. It is hindered by the stamp-inking step that is critical to ensure a reproducible and uniform transfer of inked molecules over large areas. This is particularly important when addressing application such as cell microarray manufacturing, which are currently used for a wide range of analytical and pharmaceutical applications. In this paper, we present a large-scale and multiplexed microcontact printing process of extracellular matrix proteins for the fabrication of cell microarrays. We have developed a microfluidic inking approach combined with a magnetic clamping technology that can be adapted to most standard substrates used in biology. We have demonstrated a significant improvement of homogeneity of printed protein patterns on surfaces larger than 1 cm2 through the control of both the flow rate and the wetting mechanism of the stamp surface during microfluidic inking. Thanks to the reproducibility and integration capabilities provided by microfluidics, we have achieved the printing of three different adhesion proteins in one-step transfer.
