- Abstract
This kindergarten level teaching manual accompanies the early French immersion program. It is based on general and specific learning objectives for the four skills that the child needs to develop, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The introduction to the manual provides an overview of the program for the primary grades and learning objectives for the four language skills for grades 1-7. The lessons are organized according to the following areas of individual development: (1) language acquisition, (2) development of motor coordination, (3) development of visual and spatial perception, and (4) development of auditory perception. Each section has from five to eight lessons which are organized according to the following schema: (1) general objective; (2) specific objective; (3) specific learning objective for the lesson, which includes a statement of content and instructional materials; and (4) suggested individual and group learning activities along with references and sources for instructional materials. An appendix provides an outline of reading texts to be used in each grade of the program. (AMH)

The concept of "preliteracy" is important for adult literacy programs. All illiterate adults can undertake their initiation into the world of letters and figures provided they are strongly motivated to do so. Experiments on motivation indicate that literacy programs must respond at least to one essential need of the future literate person. Illiterate people face a number of difficulties with regard to letters and figures. Studies have shown that they experience serious difficulties in understanding pictures and drawings if they live in an environment poor in written signs. In the case of "reading drawings," the notion of proportion and perspective must be introduced; colors facilitate the understanding of pictures; and readers must be able to identify specific sounds that are related to specific graphical symbols. In preparing adults to read, the teacher should develop exercises that teach reading sense or direction and identify problems related to similarities of the symbols used in writing. Preparation for writing should include starting with simple motor activity and continue into the reading of images. Numeracy exercises should relate the quantities of objects known to the graphical representation and then provide for the memorization of signs. (A French language version follows.) (YLB)

As a result architecture is increasingly becoming a message of global abstract culture rather than being cultural element of stability for the local.The aim of this paper is to look at the visual identity of urban in new capital cities and how they change under the impact of globalization, city centers of Dubai, Brasilia, Doha, and New Capital Cairo have been chosen as a cases studied because have been significantly shaped particularly with regard to contemporary planning policies, reflecting the needs and modern outlook of contemporary architecture. Archaeological discoveries describing the first abstract engravings and ornamentations of the body, through objects of adornment and the use of pigments, suggest that the use of signs and/or symbols is not limited to Homo sapiens. From a neuro-archaeological perspective, our study aims to infer the neural bases required for the emergence of these first potentially symbolic types of behaviour. We used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to record participants' brain activity when we presented them with stimuli from potentially symbolic cultural innovations. These were schematic versions and photographs of early Palaeolithic engravings, followed by faces that were culturally ornamented with wooden beads and red paint strokes. Their perception involved associative visual brain areas. The salience network was mobilized to attribute a human origin to abstract patterns and a social status to ornamented faces. The latter also involved frontal regions belonging to the "social brain". My work suggests that the neural bases that not only enable relevant elements of the environment to be selected in order to recognize intentional productions of others, but also probably culturally determined meaning to be attached to these productions, were already functional in the Middle Palaeolithic, in the context of an increasingly complex social organization.

8. Student Perceptions of the Visual Design of Learning Management Systems

Research on the impact of the visual design of the user interface of learning management systems (LMS) on learning experience is sparse. The purpose of this study was to conduct a preliminary examination of students’ perceptions of the visual design of their postsecondary institutions’ LMS and their learning experiences using survey methodology (N= 46). Students generally agreed that the course homepages were well organized and that the LMS colours, while deemed moderately to very important, did not enhance learning or increase the ability to remember course content. However, more positive perceptions of the visual appearance of the LMS were associated with greater satisfaction with grades. Expected end of term grade point average was negatively correlated with the degree to which students perceived that colour enhanced their learning. Students reported a greater satisfaction with the contribution of the LMS to learning correlated to the number of school terms they had used an LMS, their LMS proficiency, and their perceptions about the visual appeal of the LMS design. Together, these results suggest that exploring the impact of LMS colour and other dimensions of visual design on student engagement and learning are important and have practical value for LMS developers, instructional designers, and instructors.

In this paper, I analyse the noun forms derived from the prototypical verbs of visual perception, see and look. The descriptors used to process verbal polysemy must prepare the correspondence between verb classes and noun classes. This involves indicating whether perception verbs have nouns as associated forms. I also show that if the predicates and arguments are fundamental for the interpretation of the sentence, the actualizers are fundamental for its grammaticalization. The actualization will condition the reading of the nominal predicate. I show how this actualization will allow us to elaborate classes of predicates and thus to renew the approaches of polysemy. 14. Defining the Visual Complexity of Learning Management Systems Using Image Metrics and Subjective Ratings

Research has demonstrated that students’ learning outcomes and motivation to learn are influenced by the visual design of learning technologies (e.g., learning management systems or LMS). One aspect of LMS design that has not been thoroughly investigated is visual complexity. In two experiments, postsecondary students rated the visual complexity of images of LMS after exposure durations of 50-500 ms. Perceptions of complexity were positively correlated across timed conditions and working memory capacity was associated with complexity ratings. Low-level image metrics were also found to predict perceptions of the LMS complexity. Results demonstrate the importance of the visual complexity of learning technologies and suggest that additional research on the impact of LMS design on learning outcomes is warranted.

The presence of the camera becomes prominent among scientific and artistic discourses of the 19th century; it is also fundamental to John Ruskin’s aesthetic theory, as a close study of several of his writings shows. Photography reveals for instance the existence of some physiological distortions in human perception, and perceptual aberration was analysed at great length by John Ruskin, whether it be revealed by Turner’s art or by the daguerreotypist’s talent or lack of skill. In volume IV of Modern Painters, Ruskin contends that photographs might after all be more on Turner’s side than he and other critics might have first thought: ‘Photographs never look entirely sharp; but because clearness is supposed a merit in them, they are usually taken from very clearly marked and un-Turnerian subjects; and such results as are misty and faint, though often precisely those which contain the most subtle renderings of nature, are thrown away, and the clear ones only are preserved. Those clear ones depend for much of their force on the faults of the process. Photography either exaggerates shadows, or loses detail in the lights . . . and misses certain of the utmost subtleties of natural effect (which are often the things that Turner has chiefly aimed at,) while it renders subtleties of form which no human hand could achieve’. (Ruskin, 1856, vol. IV, Chapter IV, §11).I shall strive to define in this paper some of the implications of the act of vision according to Ruskin, wondering about differences in effect and form for instance, and seeking their causes; I will attempt to show how some of the obstacles which can actually hamper human sight turn out to be eminently positive for Ruskin, giving birth to the main arguments of his belief in the superiority of Medieval art over Renaissance art. Ruskin’s defence of imperfection thus appears to be closely linked to natural perceptual aberration.

This paper aimed to study how to attract more attention to the digital images used on advertising posters, by applying the visual perceptual constancy. To achieve this goal, the study used the descriptive and experimental, methods to analyze the nature of visual perception and visual perceptual constancy. Then, experiments were designed to employ the perceptual constancy, which extends its influence to the ability to produce a digital image used in advertising poster, beyond the boundaries of the visually familiar. The results measured the audience' exposure time and analyzed it. They indicated that there was an increase in the audience’ exposure time when using perceptual constancy as the main design concept in the digital images on advertising posters, and they led to recommendations to expand the use of perceptual constancy in the digital image on advertising media to get more audience' attracting attention.

That a link exists between vision and knowledge cannot be denied, but this link is by no means straightforward, and can function in either direction. In order to describe it accurately, the distinction between information and knowledge must first be clarified. We must then examine that which, in our visual perception, really stems from the stimuli, as opposed to that which results from some reworking by the brain. And finally we need to investigate how a global visual image can be transformed into a linear verbal sequence. We may then analyze a series of examples, some very famous, that illustrate the role of vision in such fields as epistemology, general science, techniques, teaching and finally in poetic and symbolic imagination.

Résumé: La perception visuelle est la modalité privilégiée par l'homme pour prendre des informations sur le monde qui l'entoure afin d'interagir avec lui. Dans la maladie d'Alzheimer, la perception visuelle est souvent altérée dès les phases précoces de la maladie, ce qui altère la qualité de vie des patients et rend plus difficile l'évaluation des troubles cognitifs qu'ils présentent par ailleurs. Dans cet article, nous rapportons les déficits visuels décrits chez des patients souffrant de maladie d'Alzheimer en les classant selon leur correspondance neuroanatomique, de la rétine aux régions sous-corticales et corticales. Les troubles sont fréquemment rencontrés dans la perception visuelle de bas niveau, défaut de sensibilité au contraste ou de discrimination des couleurs, et de haut niveau, troubles visuospatiaux ou agnosiques. Ces troubles doivent être pris en compte pour adapter la prise en charge des patients, mais aussi pour un diagnostic précoce. Visual perception is humans' preferred way for taking information on the surrounding world. Visual perception is frequently impaired in patients with Alzheimer's disease, lessening patients' quality of life, and making evaluation of other cognitive deficits more complicated. Our review covers the recent literature describing visual perception deficits in patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease by classifying them according to their neuroanatomical correspondence: retina, visual pathway, subcortical structures, occipital visual cortex, occipito-temporal "what" and occipito-parietal "where" pathways. Overall, both low-level and high-level visual perception disorders seem quite common in Alzheimer's disease, including, on a low-level, loss of visual field, decreased acuity and contrast sensitivity, and impaired color vision, and on a high-level, impaired color vision, motion perception, visuospatial deficits, object agnosia, prosopagnosia and impaired recognition of facial emotional expressions. Professionals working with Alzheimer's disease should be aware of visuoperceptual deficits, which could impair the quality of life of the patients, and distort the results of neuropsychological tests using visual material. Moreover, some tests assessing visual perception could be of interest for early diagnosis of the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While helmet wearing reduces the severity of injuries in motorcycle crashes, it may also increase the likelihood of getting involved into a traffic accident through a reduction in the rider's field of view. We thus investigated the perceptual effects of helmet wearing when riding a motorcycle. The task consisted of negotiating curves in a fixed-based motorbike simulator while the helmet visor vertical dimension and need to check the handlebar-mounted speedometer were manipulated. Decreasing the vertical aperture below roughly 30 deg significantly impaired a rider's ability to maintain their lane position and speed; with the effect of aperture being significantly greater when speedometer checking was required. Perception is the understanding by the brain of the different sensory information. In humans, information is mostly visual and is conveyed to the occipital cortex. MRI techniques suggest that it is deciphered in different areas of the temporal cortex, depending upon the observed scene. The neural codes used by neurons of these areas will be discussed in two instances: Recognition of written words and of faces. In the first case, an hypothesis using basic properties of neurons and hierarchy of local combination detectors, accounts for the invariance of their visual form. That it is relevant is emphasized by its successful application to reading mechanism. In the second more recent instance, recognition of human faces by macaques is shown to reside in neuron patches in the inferior temporal cortex, forming a system identifying faces with view invariance. The code allowing facial identification using the electrical activity of 200 neurons was cracked.Peut-on comprendre les mécanismes de la perception ?La perception est la compréhension des informations que les organes sensoriels envoient au cerveau. It was addressed to read the image involving a gender perspective in the painting "Coffee" of the artist Candido Portinari. One approach the history of coffee and a discussion of possible mathematical relationships that the work offers. There was a concern to combine both historic and the reading of the language of thought and visual perception.

The operator in aeronautical maintenance is constantly moving to perform his tasks and must use the procedural documentation strictly. Most of the time, the execution of the task requires both hands making difficult the consultation of the paper documentation. Furthermore, the characteristics of certain work zones offer no possibility to put down the documentation (work in height on harness, for example) in order to free hands for action performing. This exploratory study aims at answering these issues by the use of glasses (Head-Mounted Display). Several parameters considered as determining for their use in the aeronautical maintenance context are taken into account (physical comfort, visual comfort, ease-of-use). Among the sensory information used by a player in a net-mediated opposition sport, visual information represents the most used information. Collecting relevant visual information under temporal pressure is one of the determinants of badminton performance. Anticipation, as judgment and attention, as perceptivo-cognitive skill, is defined from the acquisition of visual information. Anticipation involves visual information pick-up and attention allows this information pick-up. Fatigue, as an inherent constraint in practice, can affect anticipation, attention, visual search and performance in sport. However, the links between these variables remain poorly described and understood in real badminton settings. Thus, first scientific aim of this thesis is, from the expertise model, to bring descriptive and explanatory knowledge on anticipation judgment from four determinants: motor, visual, attentional and knowledge determinants for badminton players in real game settings. The second goal is to assess effects of fatigue on this judgment. The main results of this thesis show a difference in anticipation/reaction motor and visual responses according to the level of expertise (Study 1). Regarding effects of fatigue, motor and visual responses are little impacted by fatigue for novice players (Study 2) but are impacted for expert players (Study 3). More specifically, in a defensive force ratio, fatigue impacts gaze and motor behaviors (Study 4). These first results in ecological situations of badminton allow descriptive and explanatory contribution according to two levels of expertise (beginners and high-level athletes) and an understanding of the fatigue constraint on anticipation judgment. Finally, the understanding of attentional and anticipation mechanisms in a controlled situation shows an effect of expertise and fatigue (Study 5). This thesis project opens up practical perspectives of training and perspectives of complementary research on the understanding of the mechanisms of anticipation observed from the determinants of the anticipation judgment. Indeed, the contributions of this project allow an accessible rendering of knowledge for educational purposes in order to optimize the training programs (written feedback, instructions, training situations) and new research questions around the neuronal mechanisms and the fatigue-performance link involved in the anticipation judgment in situations and around factors (commitment, type of games) that can impact this judgment., Parmi les informations sensorielles utilisées par un joueur dans un sport d’opposition médié par un filet, les informations visuelles représentent les informations les plus utilisées. Prélever les informations visuelles pertinentes sous pression temporelle est un des déterminants de la performance en badminton. L’anticipation, comme jugement et l’attention, comme habileté perceptivo-cognitive, se définissent à partir de la prise d’informations visuelles. L’anticipation implique une prise d’informations visuelles et l’attention permet cette prise d’information. La fatigue, comme contrainte inhérente à la pratique, peut impacter l’anticipation, l’attention, la prise d’informations visuelles ainsi que la performance sportive. Cependant, les liens entre ces variables restent peu décrits et compris dans la pratique réelle de badminton. Ainsi, le premier objectif scientifique de cette thèse est, à partir du modèle exploratoire de l’expertise, d’apporter des connaissances descriptives et explicatives sur le jugement d’anticipation à partir de quatre déterminants : moteur, visuel, attentionnel et de connaissance pour des joueurs de badminton dans un contexte de réalité de terrain. Le second objectif est d’évaluer les effets de la fatigue sur ce jugement. Les résultats principaux de cette thèse montrent une différence de réponses motrices d’anticipation/réaction et visuelles selon le niveau d’expertise (Etude 1). Concernant les effets de la fatigue, les réponses motrices et visuelles sont peu impactées par la fatigue pour une population de joueurs novices (Etude 2) mais sont impactées pour une population de joueurs experts (Etude 3). Plus précisément, dans un rapport de force défensif, la fatigue impacte les comportements étudiés (Etude 4). Ces premiers résultats en situations écologiques de badminton permettent un apport descriptif et explicatif du sport selon deux niveaux d’expertise extrême (des non joueurs et des sportifs de haut niveau) et une compréhension de la contrainte fatigue sur le jugement d’anticipation. Enfin, la compréhension des mécanismes attentionnels et d’anticipation en situation contrôlée montre un effet de l’expertise et de la fatigue (Etude 5). Ce projet de thèse ouvre des perspectives pratiques d’entraînement et des perspectives de recherches complémentaires sur la compréhension des mécanismes d’anticipation observés à partir des déterminants du jugement d’anticipation. En effet, les apports de ce projet permettent un rendu accessible des connaissances à des fins pédagogiques afin d’optimiser les programmes d’entraînement (écrits, consignes, situations) et de nouvelles questions de recherche autour des mécanismes neuronaux et du lien fatigue-performance impliqués dans le jugement d’anticipation en situation et autour des facteurs (engagement, type de jeux) pouvant impacter ce jugement.

Lighting simulation methods, used in image synthesis, make it possible to obtain so-called photorealistic views of 3D virtual environments. To do this, they use stochastic methods, based on the theory of large numbers, which explore the space of light paths and are characterised by a progressive convergence of the image towards the solution. This progressiveness is visually expressed by the presence of noise, which is gradually reduced as the calculations progress. This noise must be identified and quantified in order to have perceptual criteria for stopping the algorithms in the different areas of the image. This is all the more important as the calculation time for an image can be counted in hours or even tens of hours. Having reliable criteria to stop the calculations at different points of an image would therefore allow significant time savings. In this thesis, we propose to use statistical and machine learning methods for the reduction and detection of this generated noise. The contributions made in the framework of this thesis are: (i) the constitution of a base of synthetic images with the collection of human subjective thresholds of the residual noise, (ii) the study and management of a highly perceptible local noise, (iii) the creation of deep learning models on this base of labelled images and (iv) a phase of validation of the reconstructed images obtained (learned or not) from the models of perception from subjective evaluations. Related work to the thesis research area, notably concerning the management of a specific noise in images called « firefly », has been proposed, as well as the application of a method allowing the targeting of the noise characteristics studied., Les méthodes de simulation de l’éclairage, utilisées en synthèse d’images, permettent d’obtenir des vues dites photo-réalistes d’environnements virtuels 3D. Pour ce faire, elles utilisent des méthodes stochastiques, s’appuyant sur la théorie des grands nombres, qui explorent l’espace des chemins lumineux et se caractérisent par une convergence progressive de l’image vers la solution. Cette progressivité se traduit visuellement par la présence de bruit, qui se résorbe progressivement au fur et à mesure de l’avancée des calculs. Ce bruit doit être identifié et quantifié, afin de disposer de critères perceptifs permettant d’arrêter les algorithmes dans les différentes zones de l’image. Ceci est d’autant plus important que les temps de calcul d’une image se comptent en heures, voire en dizaines d’heures de calcul. Disposer de critères fiables pour arrêter les calculs en différents points d’une image permettrait donc de réaliser des gains de temps importants. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons d’utiliser des méthodes statistiques et d’apprentissage automatique pour la réduction et détection de ce bruit généré. Les contributions réalisées dans le cadre de cette thèse sont : (i) la constitution d’une base d’images de synthèse avec recueil de seuils subjectifshumains du bruit résiduel, (ii) l’étude et la gestion d’un bruit local hautement perceptible, (iii) la création de modèles d’apprentissage profond sur cette base d’images étiquetées et (iv) une phase de validation des images reconstruites obtenues (apprises ou non) à partir des modèles de perception à partir d’évaluations subjectives. La reconnaissance visuelle est un processus temporel : d’abord, l’information visuelle est reçue sur notre rétine de manière continue à travers le temps; ensuite, le traitement de l’information visuelle par notre cerveau prend un certain temps à s’effectuer; finalement, notre perception est toujours fonction autant des expériences acquises dans le passé que de l’input sensoriel présent. Les interactions entre ces aspects temporels de la reconnaissance sont rarement abordées dans la littérature. Dans cette thèse, nous évaluons l’échantillonnage de l’information visuelle à travers le temps pendant une tâche de reconnaissance, comment il se traduit dans le cerveau et comment il est modulé par des attentes spécifiques. Plusieurs études indiquent que nos attentes modulent notre perception. Comment l’attente d’un objet spécifique influence nos représentations internes demeure cependant largement inconnu. Dans le premier article de cette thèse, nous utilisons une variante de la technique Bubbles pour retrouver avec précision le décours temporel de l’utilisation d’information visuelle pendant la reconnaissance d’objets, lorsque les observateurs s’attendent à voir un objet spécifique ou non. Nous observons que les attentes affectent la représentation de différents attributs différemment et qu’elles ont un effet distinct à différents moments pendant la réception d’information visuelle. Dans le deuxième article, nous utilisons une technique similaire en conjonction avec l’électroencéphalographie (EEG) afin de révéler pour la première fois le traitement, à travers le temps, de l’information reçue à un moment spécifique pendant une fixation oculaire. Nous démontrons que l’information visuelle n’est pas traitée de la même manière selon le moment auquel elle est reçue sur la rétine, que ces différences ne sont pas explicables par l’adaptation ou l’amorçage, qu’elles sont d’origine au moins partiellement descendante et qu’elles corrèlent avec le comportement. Finalement, dans le troisième article, nous approfondissons cette investigation en utilisant la magnétoencéphalographie (MEG) et en examinant l’activité dans différentes régions cérébrales. Nous démontrons que l’échantillonnage de l’information visuelle est hautement variable selon le moment d’arrivée de l’information sur la rétine dans de larges parties des lobes occipitaux et pariétaux. De plus, nous démontrons que cet échantillonnage est rythmique, oscillant à diverses fréquences entre 7 et 30 Hz, et que ces oscillations varient en fréquences selon l’attribut échantillonné., Visual recognition is a temporal process: first, visual information is continuously received through time on our retina; second, the processing of visual information by our brain takes time; third, our perception is function of both the present sensory input and our past experiences. Interactions between these temporal aspects have rarely been discussed in the literature. In this thesis, we assess the sampling of visual information through time during recognition tasks, how it is translated in the brain, and how it is modulated by expectations of specific objects. Several studies report that expectations modulate perception. However, how the expectation of a specific object modulates our internal representations remains largely unknown. In the first article of this thesis, we use a variant of the Bubbles technique to uncover the precise time course of visual information use during object recognition when specific objects are expected or not. We show that expectations modulate the representations of different features differently, and that they have distinct effects at distinct moments throughout the reception of visual information. In the second article, we use a similar method in conjunction with electroencephalography (EEG) to reveal for the first time the processing, through time, of information received at a specific moment during an eye fixation. We show that visual information is not processed in the same way depending on the moment at which it is received on the retina, that these differences cannot be explained by simple adaptation or repetition priming, that they are of at least partly top- down origin, and that they correlate with behavior. Finally, in a third article, we push this investigation further by using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and examining brain activity in different brain regions. We show that the sampling of visual information is highly variable depending on the moment at which information arrives on the retina in large parts of the occipital and parietal lobes. Furthermore, we show that this sampling is rhythmic, oscillating at multiple frequencies between 7 and 30 Hz, and that these oscillations vary according to the sampled feature.

The functional meaning and neural basis of the P3b component of ERPs are still under debate. One of the main issues is whether P3b reflects only stimulus-related processes (stimulus evaluation hypothesis) or response-related processes as well (stimulus-response or S-R link activation hypothesis). Here, we conducted an EEG experiment examining whether P3b may indeed reflect an S-R link activation, followed by an fMRI experiment in which we explored the brain areas and functional connectivity possibly constituting the neural basis of these sensorimotor links. In both experiments, two successive visual stimuli, S1 and S2, were presented with a 1 sec interval, and responses were defined either by S1 or S2, while participants responded only after S2 onset. The obtained EEG results suggest that P3b may be interpreted in terms of the S-R link activation account, although further studies are needed to disentangle P3-related activity from overlapping anticipatory activity. The obtained fMRI results showed that processing of the relevant S1 involved activation of a distributed postero-anterior sensorimotor network, and increased strength of functional connectivity within this network. This study analyses conjointly the visual phenomenon generated by yellowing varnish and its removal and controlled interviews of observers. The removal of yellowing varnish modifies considerably the perception of the picture. Daytime, climate, season and characters activities are modified. The patina may be perceived either as an obstacle to the painting exploration, or, for those who appreciate it, as a medium for a closer relationship between the painting and the observer.

The importance of the visual aspects of the fantastic reverberates even into theory, as shown by several researchers throughout the last decades. These researchers distinguished themselves from their predecessors, whose definition of the fantastic implied mainly an involvement of the intellect. From the many forms it takes, we will concentrate in this article on the thematic level of the text, or, more precisely, on the use of the mirrors and other forms of reflection as a form of exploration of the self in the fantastic tales of the Belgian writer Thomas Owen. Vision becomes more than a common way of perceiving reality for the writer's characters, now looking to shed a new light on the unknown and offering an insight on things beyond reason. This research focuses on the ability of the young child to detect and identify the continuity or discontinuity of a cursive handwriting movement. The evolution of this ability has been studied by comparing the performance of nonscripters (kindergarten) pupils and students scripters (2nd and 5th years of primary school). Results showed that the perception of information relating to the continuity of writing movement is antecedent to the formal learning of cursive handwriting. Summary: For practising sports, vision is a major sensorial element whatsoever sport level is concerned. The vision is based on a sensorial system and the eye picks up the information. This information conveys through retina, visual ways and brain. Throughout this process, filtration or amplification mechanisms, plurimodal and multisensorial mechanisms, cognitive mechanisms, paying attention and memorizing mechanisms are playing an essential role. This so perfect and rather complex construction can be easily damaged when the eye is wounded. Practising a sport may expose the eyes to damageable traumatisms. The subsequent secondary effects would be a decline of the visual capacity and consequently a decline of the athletic performance. Finally, “sport doctors” and coaches focus on the physical preparation, heart ventilation, cardiovascular monitoring, but they should not forgot the visual system which has an essential role as the brain is in an hermetically closed box and can only react when receiving relevant information of which 80% come from vision. Most injuries involve the cornea due to penetration of small foreign bodies. Direct or indirect shock can have secondary consequences such as glaucoma, cataract or retinal injury. Abstract: Background: Abnormal recognition of facial expressions (ARFE) is associated with poor inter-relational difficulties. Among depressive patients, the difficulties in recognising facial expressions lead to errors in emotionally charged information. Objectives: To evaluate ARFE following the Analysis method and the search for emotional integration (MARIE). This tool uses a continuation of fictive portraits created from two real portraits and in varying proportions (Professor Eckman''s portraits with his agreement). This is an emotional series, which can be either unipolar or bipolar (neutral/emotion, emotion/emotion). The subject has to choose between two possibilities for each portrait. The programme comprises nine series of 19 pictures of three different faces (a fair-haired woman, a dark-haired woman and a man). Statistical analysis: An average between the two evaluations (X 2 test) can be compared according to the patient''s answers. Comparison of results between patient''s answers before and after the treatment and results before and after of a standard reference, which is, by definition, 100%. Comparing the averages of time answering between the two evaluations (Student test) by logarithms. Results: The joy would be the emotion most sensitive to improve the mood and thus therapy. Conversely, recognition of fear and surprise would be the less sensitive. There would be a gradient answer of qualitative (type of emotion) and quantitative (intensity score) over treatment. The patient hardly recognizes the sadness at the opposite of the anger. There would be a hypo-sensibility to sadness or hypersensitivity to anger in a major depression. However, the disorder varies according to the face presented. Discussion: We report the results of a unique case and we must remain critical. However, the results are in the line with most writers. It credits the interest of the measurement tool. The graduation in the intensity of the scores does not suggest a single system but seven emotional subsystems separated which intensity of the response is proportional to the mood disorder. This work should be extended to a homogeneous population of patients with more tests faces to avoid the idiosyncrasie and to better study the interactions between emotions and mood. Summary: Aim of the study: A previous study has shown some behavioral differences in normal subjects depending on the position of the eyelids: the postural behavior was varying if the subject had the eyes open in darkness or the eyes closed. In this study, we explore the possible role of vision on this behavior. Patients and methods: The postural behavior of 12 blind and nine visually impaired participants was studied during undisturbed upright stance. Results: In this sample, no difference was found in the conditions eyes open in the dark and eyes closed: the observed behavior in blind and visually impaired subjects is different compared to normal sighted subjects who show a visual preference even in total darkness when the eyes are open. Our two groups (blind and visually impaired) actually show a difference on the median frequency of the centre of gravity displacements. Conclusion: Our results suggest an adaptive mechanism of the central nervous system in healthy individuals to predominantly weigh visual cues when the eyelids remain open. Good visual acuity and time seem to be necessary for this process. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We studied the visual recognition of the facial emotions, on 20 chronic and institutionalized schizophrenics. They were paired in age, sex, educational level with a reference group. We used the MARIE battery which uses a binary pairing in a continuum of intermediate images. The recognition of the disgust is decreased followed by the fear. The surprise is the least overdrawn. The concept of aerial perspective has been used for the first time by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). This article studies its dependence on Ptolemy's Optica and overall on the optical tradition inaugurated by Ibn al-Haytham's Kitāb al-Manāzir (d. after 1040). This treatise, that was accessible through several Latin and Italian manuscripts, and was the source of many Medieval commentaries, offers a general theory of visual perception emancipated from the case of the moon illusion, in which physical and psychological factors are closely combined. Atmospheric extinction (not refraction, which is sometimes confused with) affects the conjectured size of remote objects. This phenomenon is also the core source for a pictorial rendering of depth, that is based onto a principle different from the diminution of size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
