Abstract The Unplanned Space between Laws and Reality: The Case of the ‘Diar Zitoun’ District (Eastern Algeria) Unplanned space in urban areas is a global phenomenon, but today it has a particularly profound impact on the cities of developing countries such as Algeria. The objective of this article is to know the intervention operations preferred by the occupants of the unplanned space of Diar Zitoun (Eastern Algeria). A field survey was carried out using a sample of 153 heads of household, or 25.3% of the dwellings. The results obtained show that the heads of household advance the same intervention operations: above all the regularization of constructions with 62%, then the absorption (27%). The preferred solutions vary depending on the type of housing: residents who have irregular housing developments prefer regularization of their housing, while those who have slums request demolition.
