Process‐related carbon dioxide emissions in lime production and in the thermal utilization of fossil and biogenic residues are unavoidable. The application as carbon‐based feedstock by hydrogenation as a building block for basic chemicals such as methanol can contribute to the defossilization of the industry and the reduction of climate‐impacting emissions. Applying the example of two plants from the lime industry and thermal waste utilization in combination with utility and performance numbers derived from the process owners, a techno‐economic and life cycle analysis is employed to demonstrate the boundary conditions under which this can be implemented in an ecologically and economically profitable manner in industrial practice.
