Introduction: An evidence-based approach is relevant and indispensable for occupational therapy practice. It combines three levels: research evidence, objective knowledge through scientific literature, clinical expertise, the knowledge of therapists working in practice and the patient's perspective. In order to treat children with Down syndrome with fine motor skill problems, it is necessary to bring these three levels together. This paper aims to shed light on this to create a basis for evidence-based decisions. This article asks about occupational therapy treatment methods that are useful to enhance fine motor skills in children with Down syndrome. Methods: In the first step, the two-stage approach combines, evaluates and summarizes research evidence on the topic by means of a rapid review. In a second step, three qualitative interviews with occupational therapists working in practice were conducted, transcribed, analysed, and narratively summarized. Results: Research evidence on the question is limited, with only six studies with different study designs explicitly addressing fine motor skills in children with Down syndrome and occupational therapy options. The quality of the studies is also inadequate. Regarding clinical expertise, the three evaluated interviews discuss occupational therapy options. Conclusion: Research evidence and clinical expertise on the research question result in three main recommendations for occupational work with children with Down syndrome in order to enhance fine motor skills. Limitations have to be taken into account. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article "JUMP UP HIGH! PROGRESS THROUGH MOVEMENT" by Oliver J. Ehmsen in the magazine "Musik und Bildung" emphasizes the importance of movement for the development of children. Through movement to music, children can improve their coordination, motor skills, and musical perception. The song "Jump up high!" promotes rhythmic jumping movements and offers an inclusive opportunity for all children to actively participate. It is recommended to also use gestures to allow people with disabilities to participate in singing and making music. [Extracted from the article]

The article reports on a decision by the Supreme Court (OGH) in Austria regarding the topics of "wrongful birth" and "wrongful conception". It is stated that both contraception and prenatal diagnostics fall within the scope of the financial interests of the mother or parents in preventing conception or the birth of a child, as part of the purpose of the medical treatment contract. If a child would not have been conceived or born due to a medical error, the doctor is liable for the child's maintenance costs. The article also describes the specific case of a woman whose child was born with a malformation that was not detected during an ultrasound examination. The malformation affects the child's mobility and motor skills. In the present case, it concerns a lawsuit for compensation and determination of liability for future damages due to an error in prenatal diagnostics. The plaintiffs demand reimbursement for all costs incurred due to their child's disability, including treatment costs, travel expenses, care costs, and other expenses. The court ruled in favor of the plaintiff and ordered the defendant to pay compensation and maintenance. It was determined that the defendant did not properly conduct the examinations and is therefore liable for the damages incurred. [Extracted from the article]

The body is challenged in art lessons: Eyes and hands should work together in coordination to create an artwork. The drawing hand should bring the imagined to paper. This requires a certain amount of motor skill. But what if the voluntary motor skills are severely impaired due to a physical disability and the hands don't do what you want them to? This article discusses the importance of the body - especially the physically disabled body - when drawing and painting. The case study of Luisa shows that there are other ways of being artistically active besides using one's hands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SPECIAL education teachers , *VISUAL education , *EDUCATION conferences , *EDUCATION ministers , *MOTOR ability - Abstract
The article by Elisa Weber discusses the challenges that special education teachers face when teaching students with visual impairments. There are few current publications on this topic, although the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs points out the importance of promoting orientation, mobility, and body awareness in physical education. To plan successful lessons, comprehensive knowledge of the visual potentials and challenges is crucial. It is important to consider the individual prerequisites of the students and to influence the environmental conditions in order to improve physical education for students with visual impairments. It is emphasized that the needs of children born blind are different from those of children who become blind, and that the motor development of these children is about four years behind their peers. Strong differentiation is recommended in physical education to promote their motor development. [Extracted from the article]

GENETIC mutation , *RARE diseases , *METABOLIC disorders , *MOTOR ability , *SYMPTOMS , *LIFE expectancy , *CHILD patients , *AGE groups - Abstract
Abstract: The investigation of rare diseases is challenging because of the small number of patients and a frequently heterogeneous, multisymptomatic clinical presentation. Niemann-Pick type C (NPC), a progressive, neurodegenerative hereditary disorder, was long considered a pediatric disease. However, in the past decade, this view changed, given that a substantial number of adult NPC patients were diagnosed. Yet, we still know little about the clinical spectrum of adult NPC. This article sheds further light on this topic. For this purpose, we based the disease characteristics of the subpopulations of pediatric versus adolescent and adult NPC patients on the available literature as well as expert opinions regarding epidemiology, genetic mutation pattern, pathology including prodromal symptoms, progression rate, general treatment regime, and treatment effects. As outlined, NPC emerges as a disease continuum based on broadly similar genetic mutation patterns and pathophysiology across age groups. Pediatric and adolescent/adult patients are characterized by diverse facets of progressive neuropsychological manifestations, such as cognitive deficits and marked limitations in their motor abilities (including consideration of prodromal symptoms). NPC progresses similarly in pediatric and adolescent/adult patients, albeit with an accelerated rate of progression and thus a shortened life expectancy the younger the patients are when neurological symptoms first appear. However, the high disease burden of all NPC patients indicates the severity of this metabolic disorder. The treatment of NPC is interdisciplinary, regardless of age. To date, there is no causal therapy option. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

VOCATIONAL high schools , *EDUCATION policy , *SPECIAL education , *INCLUSIVE education , *MOTOR ability - Abstract
The board of the state association has started engaging in a dialogue with the education policy spokespersons of the parties represented in the Hessian state parliament. The goal is to obtain information about educational policy issues and special education support, as well as to convey the association's positions. Questions have been asked on various topics such as the balancing of special education systems, inclusive education, and the development of special needs schools. Discussions have already taken place with representatives of the SPD faction and the Greens, with further talks planned. The article reports on a meeting of associations where new rules were applied. Instead of the usual statements from association representatives, short presentations were given by senior staff members. A total of three topics were discussed, including the planning of protective measures for vulnerable groups during the pandemic, the safeguarding and expansion of special education offerings and resources, as well as further education in the areas of hearing, vision, and physical and motor development. The minister commented on the current situation of the pandemic and announced a testing holiday regulation. Other topics such as the future of vocational schools and the state high school diploma will be addressed in a follow-up meeting. [Extracted from the article]

The Hufeland lecture 2022 describes - following the tension between Enlightenment and Romanticism experienced by Hufeland - the relationship between theories and practice in family medicine. This practice can be called agile working. The acronym VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) fits the challenges of family medicine. Family doctors are VUCAexperts. In daily conversations with patients, the theory of evidence-based medicine is interwoven with the personal experience of the patient and the doctor. Appropriate theories are insufficiently used for this personal experience. This applies to research and practice. It is about best interpreting (best account) the life situation of the patients. Appropriate topics are shared decision-making, appreciation, salutogenesis, metaphors, shame, resonance and many more. Such theories are called „substantive theories". When these are integrated into thinking and acting, doctors learn how to think sensing and act interwoven. This diversity can only be realised with the basic attitude of doing it "good enough". - Abstract

FORM perception , *MOTOR ability , *ARTISTIC creation , *VISION , *COGNITION , *CREATIVE ability - Abstract
Based on Konrad Fiedler’s theory of human vision, the focus lies on the difference between perception and form, using the example of the arabesque. The capability to give a structure of the arabesque is used as a mediator to illuminate vision itself, but also to interpret real phenomena more precisely. To Fiedler, the concept of expressive movement is important. With the shift from the eye to the hand – visual cognition to manual skills – a creative process occurs in which the artistic conversion of reality unfolds. According to Fiedler, this process is essential to artistic creativity. The visible result differs from the optical visible nature of the objects. The creative process attains a degree of autonomy beyond mirrored reality. This essay places Fiedler’s approach to perceptual processes in art in the tradition of the arabesque as a form of reflection of reality. Fiedler’s theory seems to be an analogous mode of thinking. STRESS management , *GROUNDED theory , *MOTOR ability , *TUNNEL design & construction - Abstract
Start-ups are considered to be ideally agile and serve as a model for restructuring in companies. The grounded theory study reconstructs how stress and strain are dealt with in agileorganized start-ups. Optimized stress management characterizes the work, which is determined by a wide range of tasks, tight time cycles and a pronounced commitment. Balancing the loads and appropriating the stress enables high performance but carries the risk of various negative stress experiences. There is the threat of getting lost in a tunnel, of experiencing dissonance due to contradictions between the experienced reality of the working conditions and the ideal of agility or of not being able to survive in the agile environment. The striving for balance, which is reflected in the wishes of the employees as well as in the conceptual principles of the agile workingmethod, thus appears fragile. Through different narratives the stress experiences get integrated into the optimized stress management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Companies are confronted with considerable pressure for change and socially complex problems, for both of which agility seems to promise remedy. By introducing agile structures, companies hope to bring about some change that is not defined with much precision. In the current agility discourse, there is no consensus about the term neither in everyday work nor in research. It offers a projection surface, where different worldviews collide with great force and little reflection. After a cognitive-linguistic analysis of the term in a historical context, a structured reflection process in the form of Patterns of Integrated Organization is presented, which serves to clarify the longing projected on the term and thus provides a decisionmaking tool for an organizational design in accordance with consciously negotiated points of view. In theory, there is little knowledge about the applicability of the Agile Manifesto in digital service companies or about the actuality of these values and principles. Inmy research I want to find out how digital service companies can apply the AgileManifesto of Software Development and if and how companies can transform themselves agilely on this basis. Answering my research question is very important for practical application. Many companies feel that they have to break new ground due to digitalization and are often left without tools when it comes to taking the first agile steps. A guide on how to implement agility in companies based on the AgileManifesto of Software Development could be a help for many companies. Bymeans of a qualitative content analysis of expert interviews the introduction of agility was analyzed. The result is amodel that supports the introduction of agility in digital service companies and helps to plan and define first steps. The meaning of the AgileManifesto was clarified and the operational application of agilitywas demonstrated. Hurdles and difficulties of agility are described and the current meaning for practice is clarified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a prevalent chronic condition with major impact on the child's daily life. According to the DCD guideline the goal of therapy is to improve participation in daily activities. The present study evaluated the impact of the CO-OP Approach, particularly the generalization and transfer of intervention gains into daily life. Methods: Four children with DCD received ten sessions of CO-OP intervention. Before and after the intervention the children and their mothers completed the COPM rating, as well, independent raters completed the PQRS scores. After finishing the therapy the mothers and three teachers were interviewed. Results: All children showed clinical relevant gains in the targeted skills. New learned skills were generalized to daily life and mothers and teachers reported a transfer of both the global and task specific strategies. Additional positive outcomes reported included increased confidence, motivation, independence, persistence, patience and changes in self-efficacy. Conclusion: Using strategies and experiencing success in the targeted skills lead to improvement in self-report and observed performance scores and anecdotal reports of numerous other positive changes in the child that had not been explicitly addressed in therapy. The study results provide further evidence that children with DCD benefit even from the CO-OP Approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unlike other great novels on the decline and fall of the Habsburg Empire, such as Radetzkymarsch by Joseph Roth or Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften by Robert Musil, Winder’s novels on this subject matter reveal a strong matriarchal determination of male protagonists which, however, is broken down in many ways. In Der Thronfolger (1937), the neurotic agility of the Austrian heir to the throne is actually an implant, or even a loan from female mother figures (including his wife) of the novel, which themselves have in turn adopted many compensational behaviour patterns originating from their fathers. Even stronger oedipal motives are exposed in the power-obsessed, capitalist siege of a small Bohemia town by Adam Dupic, a mysterious foreigner, in Winder’s 1927 novel Die nachgeholten Freuden. Both novels can thus be read as a specific version of the ‘Habsburg complex’, displaying yet another aspect of the fragility of the modern condition in Central Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

Introduction: Motor skills and motor abilities in children are often assessed using pen-paper tests such as tracing and dotting. Therapists also require additional information regarding the quality of movement. Digitisation of these tests may contribute to the accuracy and reliability of the data obtained and its evaluation. But are paper and digital tabletbased versions comparable? Methodology: In this comparative study, data was collected by means of a paper and pen version using the Handednessprofile, a standardised assessment of hand preference and skill. The same assessment was digitized by means of a tablet with a tablet pen. The two data sets were compared using 20 clearly left- or right-handed children aged 4 to 10 years. Eight of the children had motor deficiencies. In addition, the test instructors and the children were asked about perceived deficiencies between the two versions. Results: Although the digitized version achieved significantly more, and thus potentially more accurate data, the non-dominant hand unexpectedly performed better in a few younger and/or children with motor problems. This was not the case with the paper version. Conclusion: The results indicate that the physical characteristics of a tablet appear to distort the data in some younger children and those with motor deficiencies. Motor-related compensatory patterns may not work as well for these children on a tablet, compared to paper. The results indicate that the digitization of a tracing test using a tablet may not be suitable for this target group. Further studies are needed to support these results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) have a major impact on activity and participation. DCD is one of the most frequent reasons for referral to occupational therapy. The aim of this study was to ascertain how children and adolescents with DCD are treated in occupational therapy in Austria. Method: An online-survey was distributed via work groups and regional groups of the Austrian association of occupational therapists, Ergotherapie Austria. The survey included questions about all stages of the therapy process followed by descriptive data analysis using SPSS. Results: 63 occupational therapists completed the survey, 31 answered some parts. Most of the children and adolescents are referred to therapy with ICD-10 diagnosis and are mostly treated in private practices. 84% of the therapists use standardised assessments to evaluate motor function (f.e. MABC- 2), 34% to evaluate activities of daily living (mainly COPM). 72% involve parents and the child/adolescent to set the goals for therapy. Intervention time is relatively evenly distributed between task-specific training, remediation of gross motor, fine motor and perception skills. Only 46% of the therapists select task-specific approaches. Conclusion: Assessments and goal setting for children with DCD broadly correspond to the DCD guideline. Task-specific approaches, as recommended in the DCD guideline, are implemented; however, bottom-up approaches are widely used in Austria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: This article analyses adult stroke clients' experiences with the Hemi Kinematics Bio Control (H.K.B.C) therapy method which is a specific form of EMG biofeedback. Clients' perspectives are of fundamental importance for the development, evaluation and client-oriented selection of innovative interventions. Methods: In cooperation with an ambulatory occupational therapy practice, a qualitative interview study with nine stroke clients was conducted, including analysis and evaluation. Inclusion and exclusion criteria ensured sufficient treatment experience by expert therapists as well as adequate cognitive and linguistic skills. Results: Key elements of H.K.B.C mentioned by the clients are external, visual feedback, understanding of neurophysiological correlations and the development of awareness of one's own body. The possibility to participate actively and equally in the treatment is experienced as a particular important feature of the method. At the same time the interviews provide insights into challenging and problematic aspects. Conclusion: The participating clients experience H.K.B.C as a valuable addition to regular therapy and as extremely helpful for both, clients and therapists. It is important to note that the participants are characterized by a comparatively high level of activity and cognitive skills. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
