This study explores the role of emotional intelligence in primary school teachers and its impact on the quality of the teacher-student relationship, considering both teachers' and students' perspectives. The novelty of this work is the use of diversified methodologies to give voice to both teachers and students to investigate the link between teachers' emotional intelligence and the quality of the teacher-student relationship. Specifically, two self-report questionnaires were administered to the teachers, while the students (average age 8.67; SD=0.59) used the drawing. This is primarily an exploratory study conducted on a small sample of 6 teachers, from third and fourth-grade classes, and 79 children. The results, drawn from the questionnaires and the drawings, indicate that teachers with higher levels of intelligence also tend to have better relationships with their students. A number of international studies indicate a link between competence in the mother tongue and competence in a second language. However, most research has focused on adolescent and adult learners, leaving out the early stages of second language learning, and has examined the linguistic and cognitive components without addressing the role of emotions experienced in the learning context. To this end, 182 second and third grade primary students took part in this study, during which their level of proficiency in Italian vocabulary (as mother tongue), their level of proficiency in English (as second language) and their perceived emotions in English learning contexts were measured. Considering the entire sample, significant correlations were found, positive between performance in Italian and the emotion of Joy, and negative between performance in English and the emotions of Boredom and Anxiety. Furthermore, in line with expectations, regression analysis showed that age, performance level in mother tongue and anxiety significantly predicted performance in the second language. Considering, on the other hand, the sub-sample composed of participants with extreme performance in the mother tongue (< 25th and >75th percentile), it emerged that the two groups did not differ for any of the measured emotions, but the mother tongue high-performance group reported significantly higher performance in all parameters related to English. Learning English as a second language in Italian primary school children appears to be related to the competence achieved in the motor tongue, in agreement with the literature that has examined secondary school or university students and adults, and is also explained by the level of anxiety, which negatively predicts learning. However, the comparison between groups with high and low competence in Italian, shows for the latter only worst performance in English but no differences in the emotions experienced in learning contexts. L’area di confine dell’Alto Adige-Südtirol presenta un contesto scolastico dove l’uso delle lingue è oggetto da un lato di politiche linguistiche dichiarate, dall’altro gli usi dei parlanti sono lo specchio della complessità sociolinguistica del territorio. Il contributo si focalizza nell’ambito degli usi, dell’esplicitazione della consapevolezza linguistica, espressione della percezione da parte dei parlanti. Dopo un questionario di riflessione socio-metalinguistica, le attività proposte a quattro classi della scuola primaria sono state di comprensione del testo, di manipolazione della morfologia nominale e riflessione linguistica metacognitiva. I percorsi hanno aiutato a sviluppare negli apprendenti la consapevolezza della ricchezza del proprio repertorio linguistico

MIGLIORARE LA COMPRENSIONE DEL TESTO E LE CAPACITÀ DI SINTESI NELLA SCUOLA PRIMARIA: UNO STUDIO QUASI-SPERIMENTALE Abstract The paper reports the results of the evaluation of a programme aimed at improving reading comprehension and summarising skills of fourth graders through a quasi-experimental study conducted with 671 students (421 in the experimental group and 250 in the control group) in Italian schools. Students assigned to the experimental group received three months of the intervention while students in the control group continued with regular teacher practice. Results showed a statistically significant difference between the two conditions on reading comprehension and summarising skills. Students included in the experimental group outperformed students in the control group in both the measures used (dppc2 = 0.32 in the Summarising Test and dppc2 = 0.54 in the Summary Qualitative Assessment). No differences were found between students with different proficiency vocabulary levels in the experimental group. The implications for research practice and limitations of the study are discussed.

Numerose ricerche sottolineano, da un lato, l’importante influenza di emozioni e convinzioni nell’apprendimento della matematica e, dall’altro, evidenziano come la corporeità sia alla base dei processi cognitivi dell’attività matematica. L’approccio Mathemart, ideato da SCT Centre e poi utilizzato a livello europeo nel progetto TIM (Theatre In Mathematics), si avvale del Teatro Sociale e di Comunità come metodologia per l’insegnamento dei concetti matematici. In questo articolo verrà presentata la sperimentazione svolta utilizzando Mathemart in una classe seconda di scuola primaria, analizzandone potenzialità didattiche e limiti, in particolare facendo riferimento agli aspetti affettivi e al ruolo dell’esperienza corporea.

Public speaking. Language Education for Inclusion is a project for the enhancement of cultures and languages, starting with the discovery of their origins and history, through different communicative and didactic strategies and tools, to make pupils aware of their potential and to develop integration between different, but increasingly close, cultures among our school desks. The course, carried out in a fourth primary class, in collaboration with the CIDIC (Center for Innovation and Dissemination of Culture) of the University of Pisa, provided an opportunity to experience practices of integration, spirit of sharing and the multiple possibilities of dialogue, addressing different issues related to transversal citizenship skills. This paper aims to systematize the methodology, develop the theoretical lines and define the pedagogical constructs underlying this path of inclusion to make it transferable to other contexts within the school curriculum. L’indagine internazionale TALIS sull’insegnamento e apprendimento rileva dal 2008 atteggiamenti, opinioni e rappresentazioni degli insegnanti sull’esperienza lavorativa scolastica, sulla scuola e sulle condizioni lavorative. L’articolo presenta una ricerca che ha coinvolto 611 insegnanti di scuola primaria statale del Veneto e che ha avuto lo scopo di indagare la percezione dei docenti rispetto al clima e al benessere scolastico alla fine dell’anno scolastico 2020/2021. La ricerca ha utilizzato alcune parti dello strumento utilizzato in TALIS per indagare se la gran parte degli insegnanti lavori in contesti dal clima professionale positivo. I risultati denotano un’elevata percezione del livello di stresso lavoro-correlato, che potrebbe interferire con la didattica in classe, e confermano i fattori correlati alla presenza nelle scuole di un clima positivo, tra cui il rispetto reciproco per le idee dei colleghi e la possibilità di confrontarsi apertamente.

This paper proposes a comparison between a learning to read path in the first class of a primary school and the outcomes of recent papers on early literacy and reading education. The educational practices used in the class are analyzed according to different methodological approaches; these are in turn justified in terms of their effectiveness in explaining the educational processes documented by the teachers. Thanks to this, notions such as phonological awareness and emergent literacy are tested in a real context rather than an experimental one, while they also contribute to the assessment of an educational project in which early literacy activities are oriented from the very beginning to lay the foundations for the progressive development of textual competence.

This paper proposes a diachronic analysis of the Italian linguistic norm taught at school, by examining written texts produced by elementary school pupils, from the thirties to the present day. Students' texts are analyzed in relation to the features of Italian typically identified in previous studies.

In questo lavoro viene mostrata la possibilità di sviluppare un approccio al pensiero pre-algebrico con alunni della scuola primaria che presti maggiore attenzione alle caratteristiche strutturali dei problemi additivi rispetto a quelle numeriche. In particolare, illustrando una sperimentazione condotta con allievi di una classe seconda primaria, si mira a mostrare come può concretizzarsi una trasposizione di strumenti didattici propri della didattica cinese – i problemi con variazione e l’equazione figurale – nel contesto italiano della scuola primaria. Si rileva come, a partire dal testo di un problema e dalla rappresentazione grafica dei suoi dati, i bambini sono in grado di comprendere e, a loro volta, costruire variazioni del problema di partenza, esplorando le potenzialità legate alla struttura della variazione stessa. I bambini sono così portati a sviluppare competenze d’uso di strutture di risoluzione di tipo pre-algebrico, spostando l’attenzione dal piano procedurale a quello relazionale.

La convinzione che sta alla base del percorso presentato è che l’uso del denaro sia una competenza fondamentale per gli alunni, in particolare per gli studenti con disabilità; la capacità di riconoscere banconote e monete e di usarle permette infatti di conquistare autonomia e di ridurre la necessità di assistenza da parte di altri, contribuendo così a migliorare la qualità della vita del soggetto. Oltre a mettere in evidenza le potenzialità inclusive sottese all’uso del denaro, viene posto in risalto come la competenza matematica in ambito finanziario sia ben sottolineata anche dal Quadro di riferimento europeo delle competenze chiave per l’apprendimento permanente del 2018. Il percorso che viene presentato è stato proposto agli alunni di una classe quarta della scuola primaria; in tale occasione è stato ricreato un contesto di apprendimento significativo in grado di permettere ai ragazzi di partecipare attivamente al processo di apprendimento. È stato privilegiato un approccio concreto ed esperienziale, così da favorire il coinvolgimento attivo e stimolare la motivazione.

L’aumento esponenziale di diagnosi di dislessia evolutiva è stata la spinta motivazionale della presente review: valutare studi scientifici che indagano le influenze di vista e postura nella dislessia considerando le sue basi neurobiologiche, con focus sui sistemi coinvolti come quello cerebellare, somatosensoriale, vestibolare e visivo. L’interesse è stato conferito alla componente motoria e visiva, con ulteriore focus su sperimentazioni attuate nella Scuola Primaria. Ciò può essere utile anche ai docenti della Scuola dell’Infanzia per maturare maggiore consapevolezza dell’importanza, nell’azione didattica, di favorire l’attività motoria, una corretta postura ed evitare l’affaticamento visivo per prevenire disordini e disturbi dell’apprendimento.

L’articolo intende contribuire alla discussione sul senso di una formazione di docenti con profilo di generalista in un contesto istituzionale, quello dell’insegnamento elementare in Ticino, che permetterebbe anche altre strade quali la formazione di pluridisciplinaristi o semigeneralisti. Dopo un’introduzione sulla storia delle formazioni per docenti di scuola elementare in Ticino con particolare riguardo alla distribuzione delle discipline nei vari curricoli, il contributo descrive l’attuale Bachelor in primary education del Dipartimento formazione e apprendimento (DFA) della SUPSI ed espone le ragioni che spiegano perché in esso si formano docenti aventi un profilo di generalista.

La ricerca ha coinvolto tutor universitari in focus group per comprendere quale ruolo attribuiscano al rapporto scuola-museo nel percorso di forma-zione iniziale degli insegnanti, a partire da una riflessione sulle loro rappresentazioni e le loro pratiche. Fa seguito a una prima fase esplorativa che ha indagato, tramite la somministrazione di questionari, l’uso dei contenuti digitali predisposti dai musei durante la pandemia all’interno dei percorsi di tirocinio di Scienze della Formazione Primaria dell’Università di Milano Bicocca, restituendone un uso per lo più saltuario e uno scarso dialogo con i servizi educativi dei musei. Dall’analisi dei focus group, condotta con un sistema di codifica ispirato all’approccio costruttivista della Grounded Theory, sono emerse in primo luogo le idee di museo e di relazione con la scuola, quindi gli obiettivi d’apprendimento che i tutor perseguono attraverso il dialogo con il museo nelle loro classi, i punti di forza e le criticità di questa relazione incontrate nel loro vissuto professionale. Infine, hanno immaginato come promuovere nei percorsi di tirocinio un’abitudine al dialogo con i musei e sono emerse alcune proposte, soprattutto inerenti la condivisione di esperienze.

Qualsiasi contesto ambientale che preveda interazioni socio-relazionali ha insito in se stesso la sfida nella creazione di uno stato di benessere per tutti gli individui che lo compongono. Tale concetto assume ancor più rilievo se riferito ai contesti formativi formali che accolgono allievi giovanissimi come quello della Scuola Primaria, dove la crescita formativa non può prescindere dalla presenza del benessere scolastico. Scopo del presente contributo è illustrare il concetto di benessere scolastico per poi analizzare se un approccio sperimentale, che arricchisce l’offerta formativa con un laboratorio sportivo, possa risultare un’efficace strategia pedagogica in grado di migliorare il livello di benessere degli studenti. A tal proposito, a livello di scuola primaria, è stata erogata un’attività didattica laboratoriale sulla pallanuoto e attraverso il questionario QBS-B si è valutato il cambiamento del livello di benessere scolastico percepito dagli studenti dal periodo “pre” Laboratorio a quello “Post”, anche in relazione ad un gruppo controllo che non ha adottato tale variante sperimentale proseguendo con la tradizionale offerta formativa.

This review aims to examine the international scientific publications that have investigated the relationship between Emotional Intelligence (defined according to the trait model and assessed via self-report questionnaires), and professional burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced selfefficacy) in primary school teachers. Recent research in this area, which has not yet been sufficiently systematized, emphasizes the importance of emotional competencies to facilitate and improve both teachers' job performance and teaching-learning processes. High levels of Emotional Intelligence in teachers are correlated with a reduction in stress and emotional fatigue and with greater personal satisfaction in carrying out their work; moreover, they are associated with better relationships with all the actors in the educational setting, with consequent positive effects on the quality of relationships with pupils and the knowledge acquisition. Since the 1960s “aesthetic education” has heavily informed American pedagogy of music from primary school to college, as pointed out by philosophers of education like Bennett Reimer and Philip Alperson. Aesthetic education, originally grounded on Hanslick’s idea of absolute music, generated a strict formalist approach to teaching, which made it difficult for teachers to use music as part of a cross-disciplinary educational context, resulting in the isolation of music from the rest of the curriculum. At the root of the problem is what Wayne Bowman identifies as the “tremendous difference between educating in and educating through music.” In 2015 Pierpaolo Polzonetti offered a seminar on “Teaching through Opera,” directed to pre-college teachers of different disciplines, encouraging them to use opera as a way to educate students in a variety of skills and seek knowledge across the curriculum. Maggie Youngblood, a primary-school music teacher who attended the workshop, continued to experiment and collaborate with Polzonetti to educate both in music and through music. Their joint contribution shows how this is another false dichotomy, like the one denounced by Giuseppina La Face between making music and listening to music (between “far musica” and “ascoltare”). Both dichotomies are products of ideological biases that we believe should be dismantled in order to promote active teaching, as opposed to passive acceptance of abstract pedagogical tenets.

The present paper describes an experience with an L2 Italian workshop which tried to combine the competency-based educational model, already established in school practice, with Balboni’s model of language teaching. Starting from the analysis of teachers’ and childrens’ needs, the autor develops an integrated, inclusive and formative course that involved both native speakers and non-native speakers of Italian.

This paper presents the results of a study conducted on the written narratives of two fifth-grade primary school classes involved in the project Observing the Interlanguage. The aim was evaluating the effects of a pedagogical intervention in which the pupils were guided to observe the linguistic-discursive properties of oral and written texts (literary and produced by the students themselves) on their choices regarding the use of reported speech. The results show that children in the experimental classes write more vivid narratives than their peers in two control classes, because of their greater use of direct speech. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of pedagogical interventions which give pupils an active role as “little researchers" and involve them in collaborative tasks of observation and manipulation of their own and others' texts.

Questo contributo illustra i risultati di un’indagine esplorativa relativa alle modalità di gestione verbale di situazioni di conflitto da parte di bambini della scuola primaria. L’analisi mira a rilevare come gli allievi monolingui e plurilingui di 7-8 anni gestiscono l’atto di protesta in italiano nell’interazione tra pari. Oltre a descrivere alcuni degli usi pragmatici dei bambini delle classi multilingui coinvolte, l’osservazione sperimentale ha l’obiettivo di offrire indicazioni ai docenti per sviluppare interventi didattici rivolti a questa fascia d’età.

Nel presente contributo si riportano la progettazione e la descrizione di un’esperienza di apprendimento online, che ha coinvolto una classe prima di una scuola primaria nella provincia di Bari e in cui si intrecciano l’Educazione allo Sviluppo Sostenibile e l’Educazione alla Cittadinanza Digitale. La scuola si pone, infatti, come il luogo in cui educare a una digital citizenship e rendere i cittadini del domani in grado di mettere in atto delle soluzioni verdi – ambientaliste – e blu – digitali – (Floridi, 2020), poiché la tecnologia non è solo causa di problematiche di sostenibilità, ma può essa stessa divenire una soluzione a tali problematiche (Valera, 2012).

L’articolo rientra nella categoria delle “reflection papers” in quanto rappresenta un contributo teorico di approfondimento sulle tematiche della pedagogia e curricula innovativi nell'educazione STEM nonché sugli approcci e le metodologie per la ricerca educativa STEM. Nel documento vengono messe in evidenza le problematiche legate alla didattica delle STEM, partendo dalle evidenze dell’ultima indagine dell’OCSE PISA che sottolinea fortemente l’attuale divario di genere nell’apprendimento delle discipline scientifiche, tecnologiche, ingegneristiche e matematiche. Tale differenza sembra condurre inevitabilmente ad una disuguaglianza sociale crescente, allontanando sempre di più i cittadini dal traguardo di sostenibilità individuato dall’Assemblea delle Nazioni Unite nella Risoluzione adottata nel 2015 e limitando fortemente l’indipendenza della popolazione femminile. Nell’articolo viene evidenziato che l’indagine summenzionata rivela una stretta correlazione tra l’alfabetizzazione matematica e quella finanziaria, tanto da indurre a considerare l’importanza dell’educazione precoce alle STEM anche attraverso percorsi didattici di educazione finanziaria nella scuola primaria, da inserire nei curricoli verticali degli istituti scolastici. Vengono suggerite alcune delle tematiche da affrontare con le diverse fasce d’età, le strategie educative da mettere in atto e le metodologie didattiche da utilizzare passando attraverso l’interdisciplinarietà e l’innovazione tecnologica. L’articolo si conclude con la convinzione che la scuola, non solo la famiglia, sia un contesto efficace per fornire ai giovanissimi gli strumenti di pensiero per sviluppare le competenze di problem solving e per effettuare scelte consapevoli ed informate.

This paper intends to present a prototyping of D-BOX, an educational game designed to facilitate the teaching-learning process of binary code based on a system of small balls (marbles) and platforms. The main idea is to teach in a primary school (in fifth grade classes) how to learn a new way to convert decimal numbers into binary numbers, through a playful activity. The reason why such a game has been created is because future European citizens must enhance their logical-mathematical skills to face challenges of their future. One of these, among the others, is the conscious use of new digital media that are based on binary code to store, transmit and receive data between computer systems. Moreover binary code is fundamental to understand every artificial intelligence system and digital knowledge representation. D-BOX: Il codice binario e il suo insegnamento attraverso il gioco alla scuola primaria. In questo lavoro si vuol presentare la prototipazione di D-BOX, un gioco didattico atto a favorire il processo di insegnamento-apprendimento del codice binario basato su un sistema di biglie e piattaforme. L'idea principale è quella di far apprendere il processo di conversione dei numeri decimali in numeri binari, ad alunni delle scuole primarie delle classi quinte, attraverso un'attività ludica. La scelta di realizzare un gioco di questo tipo, si basa sul fatto che i futuri cittadini europei devono potenziare le proprie competenze logico-matematiche per affrontare le sfide del futuro, tra le quali emerge quella di un utilizzo consapevole dei nuovi media digitali che utilizzano la numerazione binaria per memorizzare, trasmettere e ricevere i dati tra i vari sistemi informativi, e sono alla base di ogni sistema di intelligenza artificiale e della maggior parte della rappresentazione della conoscenza nel suo formato digitale.

La direzione didattica “San Filippo” di Città di Castello comprende 6 plessi di scuola dell’infanzia e 6 plessi di scuola primaria posti in due comuni dell’Alto Tevere Umbro. A partire dal 3 marzo 2020, a causa dell’emergenza sanitaria, ha riprogrammato le proprie attività didattiche in modalità a distanza che hanno permesso di mantenere la continuità didattica con il 95% degli alunni. In questi mesi di distanziamento sociale è aumentata inoltre l’interazione con le famiglie, e sono state sperimentate modalità di supporto agli alunni in difficoltà con attività di recupero a distanza.

The paper presents MelArete, a project for ethical education promoted by CRED (Center of Educational and Didactic Research) of the University of Verona and created for children attending kindergarten and primary school. The project implies the realization of an educative path on which we carried out a qualitative research aimed at understanding children’s ethical thinking. The paper particularly focuses on the first activity of the path that implies the involvement of children in a “Socratic conversation” about good. The educational aim of the activity is to involve children in a reflection on this concept, while the heuristic aim is to allow us to understand what meanings children give to it. The collected data were analyzed through a methodological crossbreeding, which combines aspects of the phenomenological-eidetic method and of the grounded theory. The paper presents the findings which emerged in the kindergartens and primary schools involved in the research.
