Saliva often reflects the status in the oral cavity but also systemic health. For instance, the volume of saliva secretion and its hormones have been used as indicators of stress and immunity. Recently, noninvasive saliva-based tests have become increasingly common. Metabolome technologies have enabled us the simultaneous identification and quantification of the metabolite profiles (the concentration patterns of hundreds of metabolites) and are used as biomarker discovery in saliva samples. Cancer is one of the metabolic diseases, and metabolite biomarkers for cancer diagnosis have been intensively explored. We found salivary metabolite biomarkers to detect patients with oral, breast, colon, and pancreatic cancers. Machine learning has been utilized to realize higher accuracy by combining multiple markers. In addition, standard operating procedures, including preconditioning, collection, storage, processing, measurement, and data analysis, have been established to obtain reproducible quantified levels. Salivary metabolomics is one of the liquid biopsies that detect metabolic abnormalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
