A game can be described as a static set of rules and mechanics. However, it is not enough to capture the emergent properties of the interaction between individual elements of the system. Interacting mechanics form an interaction loop called ‘game dynamic'. Even though this concept is recognized, it is rarely used in game studies - partly due to the lack of a clear definition. Petrowicz proposes a clarified definition of the term game dynamic, based on its current use in the fields of game design (MDA framework - Hunicke, LeBlanc, Zubek) and game studies (Games without frontiers - Aki Järvinen). He then uses it to analyse the time dynamics of Fallout Shelter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pen and paper RPGs are on the rise once morę, after two decades of continuus decline, and as morę and morę important they become in the gaming media as a whole, it is important to look at their approach towards narrative and gamę design. One of the most difficult things to do in tabletop RPG design is simulating the process of getting wounded and then healed. As heroes of this games tend to participate in rather dangerous adventures, wounds are in- evitable and so is attending to them. Different games have different Solutions for presenting them, and as I presented in the paper, those approaches can be seen by their devotion towards realism or clean mathematics of gamę mechanics. As strange as this may sound, morę math- ematic Systems tend to lean towards healing powers of faith.

System formalny gry można opisać jako statyczny zbiór reguł i mechanik. Jednakże często to nie wystarczy, by uchwycić emergentne właściwości wynikające z interakcji pomiędzy poszczególnymi elementami zasad. Zespół współdziałąjących mechanik tworzy pętlę interakcji nazywaną czasami dynamiką gry. Termin ten choć rozpoznawalny jest rzadko wykorzystywany rzadziej w groznawstwie. Jest to przynajmniej częściowo spowodowane brakiem jednoznacznej definicji pojęcia. Artykuł prezentuje uściślenie znaczenia terminu dynamik gry na podstawie ich dotychczasowego użycia w tekstach z zakresu projektowania gier (MDAframework– Hunicke, LeBlanc, Zubek) i game studiem (Games without frontiers– Aki Järvinen). Następnie definicja zostaje wykorzystana w analizie dynamiki czasu gry Fallout Shelter. A game can be described as a static set of rules and mechanics. One of the biggest pleasures of role-playing games is the possibility to play as a fictional character. The character creation and development processes constitute the identity of a given game. In this paper, I want to observe and describe the possibilities of building character identity through rule system. In the discussion about the elements of representation of a given game character, often its mechanical side is ignored. This paper concentrates on the character creation and development processes of two tabletop RPG games. As an example I’ve chosen a classic – Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 and a more modern Polish system – Klanarchia. The materials for the analysis will be character sheets and rulebooks for both games. I will use the game elements terminology of M. Sicart, the ludological perspective of authors like J. Juul and E. Aarseth, and also the GNS theory, popular amongst RPG designers. The results of the game rules study will serve the better understanding of different ways for mechanical character identity creation and its relationship to the style in which the games are designed.

Za obiekt analizy służy polska gra przygodowa The Vanishing of Ethan Carter studia The Astronauts. The formal analysis of games is used by both game journalists writing their critiques and game designers dismantling titles already published. However, game studies have not created many tools for the complete analysis of game systems. This article aims to introduce the MDA (Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetics) structure – a formal method for game research and design created by Robin Hunicke, Marc LeBlanc and Robert Zubek. The object of analysis will be a recently published Polish adventure game - The Vanishing of Ethan Carter from the studio The Astronauts. In this paper I will analyze the relations between the mechanics system, human-game interactions (dynamics), aesthetics of the game and the types of pleasure the game is offering. With the help of L. Konzack’s categories, research methods of M. Consalvo and N. Dutton and MDA structure modified for the Polish user, I will present the possibilities of formal analysis of the game rules system. The paper aims to present, evaluate and introduce the MDA into Polish academia.

Artykuł dotyczy funkcjonowania w kapitalistycznym obiegu rynkowym sieciowych gier komputerowych segmentu AAA, rozumianych jako produkty podlegające wymianie towarowej. Autor analizuje metody kapitalizacji produktywności graczy, takie jak wykorzystywanie nieodpłatnej pracy fanów, stawiając tezę o dostosowywaniu mechanik gier do paradygmatu pracozabawy. Wymienione i opisane zostają mechanizmy modelowania odbioru i dystrybucji gier na przykładzie działania aplikacji "Steam" oraz metod eksploatacji walutowego domu aukcyjnego w grze "Diablo III". Automatyzacja procesu rozgrywki zostaje uznana za najbardziej efektywny model interakcji, wypierający tradycyjnie rozumianą eksplorację i budowanie relacji z innymi graczami. The article deals with the functioning of the on-line AAA games in capitalist market circulation, with games understood as products subject to trade exchange. The author analyzes the method of capitalization of players’ productivity, such as the use of unpaid digital labor of fans, arguing that the game mechanics are often adjusted to the playbour paradigm. The mechanisms of modeling the reception and distribution of games are listed and described based on the example of "Steam" and methods of exploitation of the Real-Money Auction House in Diablo III. Automating the process of the game is considered to be the most efficient model of play, displacing traditionally understood exploration and interaction with other players.
