This paper uses Google search information to estimate a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) that allows to evaluate the relationship between the interest in Netflix and interest in illegal sources of films and series in Brazil. The results indicate that in the long run, the interest in Netflix significantly and negatively affects the interest in online series and movie downloads. The results show that, in the short run, the increases in the interest in Netflix significantly reduces the interest in online series and movies, while Netflix, while negatively affected by the interest in online movies, benefits from the interest in online series, which may be indicate that the streaming channel benefits from free sample effects. The paper concludes that Netflix had a negative impact on the digital piracy of audiovisual products in Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper focus on rare diseases as a challenge to the Welfare State, particularly for the effectiveness of the right to health protection; a situation derived from the scientific uncertainty, intensifying the budgetary restrictions, but which can improve thanks to technological progress, specifically big data (studies). In order to find some legal remedy, the work deeps in the application of the notion of human dignity as a pillar of the human rights and all the public intervention in the Society; an option that seems conceptually clearer in Spain than in the European Union legal system. Particularly, given the framework of competences applicable in matters of public health and the controversial nature of the notion of human dignity. Finally, it is verified that the use of this notion is not fully supported by Spanish jurisprudence either. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective/Context: Big Data is a novel and promising methodological approach to acquire and analyze information from an extensive range of scientific disciplines. Despite the fact that Big Data has wide dissemination and acceptance in different scientific disciplines, its use in the field of Global Studies is still incipient. Taking this into account, this paper discusses the methodological challenges and presumable contributions that Big Data offers to Global Studies. Methodology: The starting point for this paper is the critical analysis of the conceptual bases of Big Data and its relationships with Global Studies. So, this paper proposes the possible applications of Big Data in the Global Studies contrasting some key concept. In this way, the conceptual elements that define Data Science are examined and compared with the paradigmatic conceptions of Global Studies. On these conceptual fundaments, the article discusses links, limits and, scopes of Big Data and how it can contribute to Global Studies. Conclusions: This paper concludes that technological tools based on Big Data can enrich our understanding of global phenomena only if we position ourselves in a critical attitude that recognizes that the choice of data and its analysis are decisions embedded in historical and social contexts. In this way, as with any other methodological approach, Big Data is only a partial way to obtain and analyze information. Originality: The originality of this paper is to shed critical light on the scope and limits of Big Data, beyond a positivist vision of scientific knowledge. In other words, this article recognizes the biases behind the supposed neutral explanations regarding the use of techniques based on Big Data.

SCIENCE fiction , *BIG data , *SPECULATION , *UNCERTAINTY , *POSSIBILITY , *SUBJECTIVITY - Abstract
This work, the result of a discussion carried out in a PhD thesis, analyzes how the possible, a temporal category that belongs to the future, has been increasingly captured by mechanisms of power characteristic of the so-called societies of control. The field of possibilities is being circumscribed today not only by homogenizing visions of the future that predominate in the imaginary (such as the technological future of science fiction), but also by increasingly refined mechanisms of control that predict and induce our next steps, diminishing our ability to choose, our imagination and our subjectivities. This essay analyzes these different forms of hijacking the possible, going through the machinery of modern sciences and financial speculation, until getting to the information currently stored as big data, the data flow fed by the algorithms that control and predict our next choices. The paper questions, at the end, what other types of speculation could, instead of closing the field of possibilities, expand and intensify it, remaining open to difference, uncertainty and contingencies.

BIG data , *INFORMATION science , *INFORMATION professionals , *LABOR market , *INFORMATION society , *ECONOMIC databases - Abstract
In the so-called information society, data are produced in high volumes and become the main raw material of the economic context. In this scenario, Big Data seeks to address the need to extract value from this data. The development of hardware and software capable of storing and processing high amounts of data quickly made it possible to cross-examine and analyze them, transforming unstructured data into useful information. Thus, Big Data can provide a new field of action for information science professionals. The present study observes, through a review of the existing literature and the bibliographical research of exploratory and qualitative scope, the concepts of Big Data, its tools of analysis and the search to delimit the profile of the professional of the area, identifying the positions created in the labor market and attributions. By linking the skills of Big Data professionals and librarians, the paper presents the application of Big Data as a new opportunity for action for librarians who wish to be trained in the field of data analysis. BIG data , *ACTOR-network theory , *ORIGINALITY , *SENSORY perception - Abstract
Purpose: The article presents the development of a framework to analyze the use of big data and analytics in organizations. The framework is based on affordance theory and actor-network theory (ANT). Originality/value: Big data and analytics are a set of tools and techniques that are not new, but recently have received much attention from the media and academia. The media promotes big data and analytics while the academia addresses the fact that there are still implementation obstacles and the process of using big data analytics is not well understood. Design/methodology/approach: We used a qualitative approach, in the form of a theoretical essay. We analyzed papers that related affordance theory with IT and, in particular, with big data and analytics. Further, in order to create the resulting framework, an illustrative case study was conducted. Findings: Affordance theory, allied to the translation concept of ANT, can be useful when analyzing the process of using big data and analytics in organizations, because it contemplates individual and organizational aspects, covering the perception of utility, necessary sociotechnical transformations in processes, people and structures, actual use and organizational effects. As the main contribution, we proposed a framework that includes elements of translation to guide future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores in details the way surveillance cameras work and more specifically their intelligent development, in order to identify new methods of control which put into perspective Foucault’s notion of biopolitics. Through these surveillance devices it is no longer the image itself that is analysed. The image is now described as a translation interface between the world and digital data. This translation of the world into coordinates changes surveillance applications and modifies the representation of filmed humans, therefore questioning the validity of biopolitics in today’s world. In this paper I argue that this theoretical framework needs to be revised in the light of technologic innovations and the digitalization of individuals, and I refer to “datapolitics” as a new form of governmentality.

- Abstract
In this paper, we use online digital footprints (i.e., geotagged photos from 'Panoramio') of Lisbon's visitors, between 2007 and 2014, as a sensitive proxy for exploring tourist spatiotemporal behavior within the city. We identify the visitors' photos from the overall dataset (> 75,000 photos) by looking at photos' timestamps, resulting in a sample of 17,604 photos from > 5,000 users. This empirical evidence suggests that the spatial distribution of visitors is not homogenous. Then, we assess the spatial relation between the observed pattern (geographical agglomeration of visitors) and an initial set of 24 variables regarding city tourism offer. Findings from the multiple regression analysis, show that 'Monuments of public interest' are the elements with higher attractiveness. Furthermore, some areas located within the historic center appear underestimated, despite their significant tourism appeal considering the selected variables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose – This paper aims to analyze how decision support systems manage Big data to obtain value. Design/methodology/approach – A systematic literature review was performed with screening and analysis of 72 articles published between 2012 and 2019. Findings – The findings reveal that techniques of big data analytics, machine learning algorithms and technologies predominantly related to computer science and cloud computing are used on decision support systems. Another finding was that the main areas that these techniques and technologies are been applied are logistic, traffic, health, business and market. This article also allows authors to understand the relationship in which descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analyses are used according to an inverse relationship of complexity in data analysis and the need for human decision-making. Originality/value – As it is an emerging theme, this study seeks to present an overview of the techniques and technologies that are being discussed in the literature to solve problems in their respective areas, as a form of theoretical contribution. The authors also understand that there is a practical contribution to the maturity of the discussion and with reflections even presented as suggestions for future research, such as the ethical discussion. This study’s descriptive classification can also serve as a guide for new researchers who seek to understand the research involving decision support systems and big data to gain value in our society.

This paper discusses the concept of sonification aplied to the Sons de Silício exhibition and more specifically to the design of Buzu, an audiovisual installation that generates an auditory image of the São Paulo bus transportation system. Buzu makes perceptible information of both the system’s planning and behavior during a particular week in October 2017. The work is an artistic outcome of the InterSCity project, an inter‐institutional research initiative concerning the Future Internet and the Smart Cities. Along with the discussion of the Buzu creative process we will examine mining and processing strategies related to the sonification of big data, data‐to‐sound mapping methods, auditory structure for displaying the material and the public exhibition of the work in the context of an artistic event.

In integration approaches, heterogeneity is one of the main challenging factors on the task of providing integration among different data sources, whose solution lies in the search for equality among them. This work describes the state of the art and theoretical foundation involved in the structural and semantic analysis of heterogeneous data and information. The work aims to review methods and techniques used in data integration in Big Data, considering data heterogeneity, reviewing techniques that use the concepts of Semantic Web, Cloud Computing, Data Analysis, Big Data, Data Warehouse and other technologies to solve the problem of data heterogeneity. The research was divided into three stages. In the first stage, articles were selected from digital libraries according to their titles and keywords. In the second stage, the papers went through a second filter based on their summary, and, besides that, duplicate articles were also removed. The works’ introduction and conclusion were analyzed in the third stage to select the articles belonging to this systematic review. Throughout the study, articles were analyzed, compared and categorized. At the end of each section, the interrelationships and possible areas for future work were shown.

This thesis explores some of the many questions raised in a qualitative and quantitative research carried out on the journal Big Data & Society (BD&S), an important locus of Big Data research departing from Social Sciences perspectives in recent years, being a pioneer in fostering such efforts. The analysis covers the period from 2014, year of the publication of the first issue of BD&S, to 2016, and a total of six issues and 131 published papers. The main goal is to understand the formation and foundation of Big Data discourses in Social Sciences considering the growing recognition of the need for greater understanding of the ways Big Data concepts are established (AKOKA et al, 2017; YOUTIE et al, 2016). On the one hand, the survey identifies, through a bibliometric analytical mapping, the geopolitical distribution of the actors that inform the debates, as well as the main references, keywords, methodologies and 'canons' used in the papers. On the other hand, it sought to identify how these authors and scientific communities organize their priorities in - and are organized through - that space, through an ethnographic account of one of the events promoted by BD&S. The main argument of the research is that the papers and scientific communities linked to BD&S display an increasing tension between the search for critical data perspectives along with alternatives to the predominant market-related Big Data researches, and the maintenance of categories and language of the same models they seek to rethink. A clash between trying to think in new ways of inhabiting the digital beyond social, economic and political models of the West and the reality of not knowing how to refer to the exhaustion of these models without referring to the typical world functioning of the West or Global North. The first chapter presents an overview of the origin and historical developments of Big Data, in addition to its advances in Social Sciences. This is followed by an analysis of the constitution and organization of the scientific communities where BD&S circulates, evoking the concept of "invisible college" (ZUCCALA, 2014; PAISLEY, 1972), while also presenting data from the analytical mapping to offer an overview of the research in BD&S. Still at this stage, the text presents an ethnographic account of the author's participation in the Data Power Conference 2019, organized in Bremen, Germany, and promoted by BD&S, in order to obtain a unique look at the expectations, social interactions, and perspectives that surround BD&S environment. In the following chapter, the work proposes an analysis of the main 'canonical' texts in BD&S to understand how these texts impact the paths taken in the papers published in BD&S. Finally, we arrive at a discussion on the tension between the search for alternatives outside the West and the retention of Eurocentric practices Mestrado Divulgação Científica e Cultural Mestre em Divulgação Científica e Cultural CAPES 88882.434862/2019-01

Considering the number of departments in the organizations, marketing can take an integrative role favoring the execution of strategies of the company. The market orientation, which promotes application of a philosophy in the organization, can influence the performance positively. This paper aims to establish theoretical basis for the relation between Market orientation and performance, moderated by the use of big data analytics. This was designed because of the importance of the information for the market orientation construct, since market intelligence is one of its most important elements. Then, we believe that big data, while the ability in dealing with large amount of data, moderates the relation between market orientation and performance.
