STUDENT health , *PSYCHOSOCIAL functioning , *BODY mass index , *HEALTH occupations students , *EATING disorders , *EATING disorders in women , *HEALTH behavior - Abstract
Eating Disorders (EDs) are characterized by behaviors related to eating that result in altered consumption or absorption of food and that significantly compromise physical health and/or psychosocial functioning. The estimated prevalence of EDs among Brazilians ranges from 0.5 to 5.0% in the 18 to 30 age group, which classifies college-age students as a highrisk group. Thus, we investigated the presence of risk behaviors and associated factors for the development of eating disorders among students in the health area of Maceió-Al. Therefore, it was a descriptive cross-sectional study, data collection was performed through an online questionnaire, integrated by the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), Body Mass Index (BMI) and a complementary questionnaire, evaluating a total of 316 participants. The mean age observed in the total sample was 22.6 years. It identified that 26.9% of students are at risk for developing ED. It was observed that the presence of a risk factor was associated with the female sex (71.7%), with obesity, the presence of body dissatisfaction (70.6%), with the veterinary medicine course, the practice of physical exercises (92.9%), the use of methods (54.1%) to change body weight and the presence of previous pathologies. Finally, the relevance of periodic actions of nutritional education and psychological support in the University Centers is highlighted, in order to contribute to an improvement in the quality of life of the researched group. BACKGROUND: The 1980s onwards Physical Education epistemological rupture calls into question the theoretical-methodological identity of this area and lights up what hitherto had been constituted as formative principle. The teaching and teaching to teach assumptions were impacted by educational reforms oriented towards productive flexibility. OBJECTIVES: It starts from the macro analysis of this conjuncture for an understanding of how the ideological and political-economic disputes for the definition of the legal marks of the formation in Physical Education unfold in the Pedagogical Projects of Courses of the Superior School of Physical Education and Physiotherapy of the State of Goiás. METHODS: The Dialectical Historical Materialism was the reference epistemological matrix for the methodology construction. The investigation combines exploratory-descriptive documental research and a case study with qualitative analysis based on semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: The ESEFFEGO curricular organization effort, which began in the 1990s, can be expressed in four distinct moments. Affirmation of a unique and organized formation from the Physical Education renewal movement, a second moment of expanded formation, as an effort to resist at the determinants of licensure or bachelor split, a third moment of formation radical rupture, bachelor or licentiate and a fourth moment of courses integration into a unified matrix. CONCLUSIONS: This movement is reflected in the Pedagogical Work Organization of this Institution. The teacher/student/knowledge relationship was impacted by the tensions and disputes inherent to the pedagogical course project organization. In addition to the negative implications for the academic community sense sedimentation, the continuous restructuring creates a constant noise in the institution internal dialogue, which represents an obstacle in the effort to articulate in a cohesive block (curricular component) the course project assumptions, the contents and the curricular matrix. Objective: To analyze the prevalence of anxious and depressive symptoms and their associations with sociodemographic, academic and health habits in university students in the health field. Methods: Cross-sectional, census and quantitative approach, conducted at a public university in Alagoas. 140 university students from the last theoretical year of undergraduate courses in Nursing, Speech Therapy, Medicine, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy participated. The questionnaire with sociodemographic, academic and health habits aspects and Beck's inventories for anxiety and depression were applied. The G-Williams and Chi-square tests with adjusted residuals were used, and results with p <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Anxious and depressive symptoms were seen in 57.9% (n =81) and 34.3% (n=48) of students, respectively. There was an association between depression and hours of sleep (p=0.018) and between anxiety and marital status (p=0.021). Conclusion: Anxious symptoms were more prevalent than depressive symptoms. Both were not associated with academic characteristics, suggesting that students' social conditions should be further investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To verify the knowledge of high school students about cardiopulmonary arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation and to evaluate learning immediately and late after theoretical and practical training. Methods: Longitudinal, prospective, quantitative experimental study, carried out in a public and a private institution, using a questionnaire on basic life support. The statistics were descriptive and inferential by the Friedman and Mann Whitney tests. Results: The students had insufficient knowledge, showing a significant improvement immediately and late. The two institutions had an equivalent performance in terms of correct answers in the immediate and late post-training periods. The stop signs, resuscitation maneuvers and steps to use the external defibrillator had lower success rates. Conclusion: After training, students demonstrated knowledge to act in the face of cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Introduction: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is characterized by an increased likelihood of initiating sleep at inappropriate times through involuntary naps and it negatively impacts performance in studies, work, family, and social relationships and increases the risk of accidents. Objective: This study evaluated the schedule and prevalence of EDS and its associated factors in medical students (using the PBL method), comparing it with students from other health courses (using the Traditional method). Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 1152 university students who were attending courses in the health area. The presence of EDS was defined when scores >10 in the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and the chronotype was assessed by means of the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). Using Stata 13.0 software, descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed, including interactions to fit the model. Results: The prevalence of EDS was 56.5% (95% CI, 53.6-59.4), and the mean ESS score was 11.1 (95% CI, 10.8-11.3). This value was lower among those who had morning chronotypes and was higher among medical students. 10.3% (n=119) of the students had a chronotype that was incompatible with the period of the course. The associated and independent factors for EDS were: female gender (PR, 1.14, 95% CI, 1.01-1.29), age between 16 and 19 years (PR, 1.20, 95% CI, 1.04-1.39), studying late at night and using cell phones before falling asleep (PR, 1.56, 95% CI, 1.02-2.38), not doing weekly physical activity (PR, 1.13, 95% CI, 1.02-1.25), and morning chronotype (PR, 0.87, 95% CI, 0.76-0.99). Not using cell phones before bedtime reduced the prevalence of EDS by 14%. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the morning chronotype behaved as an independent protective factor for disorders of the circadian cycle. Performing weekly physical activity reduces EDS among students with intermediate and evening chronotypes.

Introduction: Cardiac arrest is a critical health condition whose survival rate is associated with the speed with which cardiopulmonary resuscitation is performed. Objective: To assess self-confidence, knowledge and skills of nursing interns about cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Materials and methods: A quantitative descriptive study was conducted between April and July 2018 with 80 nursing interns at a public university in northeastern Brazil. A knowledge test, a self-confidence scale for emergency intervention and an assessment of CPR practical skills using a mannequin were applied. Kruskal-Wallis and Pearson’s Chi-square tests were also used. Results: Nursing interns showed low self-confidence before an emergency. The theoretical questions about the location to check the victim’s pulse and position were correctly answered by most of the nursing interns. The main gaps in knowledge were related to the initiation of compressions (p = 0.245) and the rate of compressions/breaths (p = 0.034). In terms of skills, the gaps in knowledge were related to the position of the rescuer’s hands and arms (p = 0.058), trunk movement (p = 0.062) and the right depth of compressions (p = 0.086). Discussion: Regular training and continuing education are necessary for rapid, safe and effective care which will be provided by future nurses. Conclusions: Gaps in knowledge and skills were evident, highlighting the importance of new methodologies to intensify and ensure the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process. Introduction: Training nursing students in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers is essential for safe and quality performance in different nursing performance scenarios. CPR integration into clinical practice settings, from the early years of the degree, provides greater confidence when performing it in emergency situations. The study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of newly graduated nursing students before and after receiving Basic Life Support (BLS) training through simulation. Materials and Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted at a public higher education institution in southeastern Brazil in 2015. The students answered a pre-test and, right after the intervention, answered a post-test. For the analysis, the McNemar and Wilcoxon paired tests were used. Results: Students were identified as having satisfactory knowledge (≥ 80%) on several subjects immediately after taking the course. However, the test questions related to the links in the chain of survival (-18.7%; p = 0.004) and to the steps of open airway maneuver (-16.0%; p = 0.091) indicated a reduction in the number of correct answers after the intervention. Discussion: The use of combined strategies, including the medium-fidelity simulation for teaching BLS, has facilitated the understanding of BLS content. Conclusions: The use of simulation showed a positive evolution of knowledge related to the depth of chest compression, the sequence of CPR steps and the compression-ventilation ratio for CPR per minute. Objective: to know the that women and men with a labor or student bond of the Federal University of São João del-Rei, Campus Central-West, know about the climacteric and menopause. Method: a unique case study, with a qualitative approach and based on the technique of Critical Discourse Analysis. The survey counted on 43 participants, being 15 women and 28 men. Results: the distinction between the phases of female life understood by the climacteric and the menopause is not always clear to the participants, being unknown, especially, by the male participants. In addition, it is a time when women complain of various symptoms, both biological and psychological. Conclusion: there is a lag in women's knowledge regarding such periods. Men's total ignorance of the climacteric is noted, and few know what menopause is. In view of the above, it is evident the need for further studies that seek to explore the menopausal / climacteric theme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: This study is aimed at sharing experiences in the use of active methodologies in the education of master's students in nursing. Materials and methods: A descriptive narrative study was conducted based on Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy, describing the experience that master's students of a stricto sensu postgraduate course had in the use of active and innovative methodologies in the classroom. Two strategies were used to assist the teaching-learning process, namely: dynamics and musical parody. Results: When using the flower dynamics and musical parody as a basis for discussing contents, greater attention was perceived from the target audience as well as greater participation in the construction of knowledge. Discussion: Based on the implementation of activities, dynamics and parodies may be considered effective as it is an individual process of construction that uses different forms of interaction with the environment/content as well as that promotes critical awareness. Both activities aroused students' curiosity and interest, which encouraged them and facilitated their learning process. Affective and cognitive processes were fostered, in addition to creative sense-making. Conclusions: It was concluded that the use of active methodologies in strictu sensu postgraduate courses promotes participation, discussion, understanding and learning of more complex contents, which can be implemented, provided that contents, room, methodology, audience and availability of resources required to implement these plans are taken into account.

Objective: to identify risk activities for accidents with biological material in the opinion of nursing students and the knowledge of the measures against an accident, to describe the frequency and profile of the accidents and to identify the post-exposure care. Methodology: cross-sectional study with nursing students from a higher education institution in the Center-West of Brazil. Data obtained by electronic questionnaire and analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 126 students participated, most of them women (96.0%) who reported previous guidance on biological risk. None cited all recommended post-exposure measures. Handling sharps (64.4%) was the most reported risk behavior and mucosal exposure was the cause of three of the four reported accidents. Of these, two were informed to the teachers and followed the indicated behaviors. Conclusion: Most students recognize the risk in activities involving sharps, but few identify them in other activities involving body fluids. Three students (2.4%) suffered an accident (one reported two) and three in the mucosa. Informing the teacher was the most cited post-exposure behavior, and among the injured, the most secure behaviors were adopted under the guidance of the teacher. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
