HISTORIC buildings , *HOUSING policy , *GOVERNMENT policy , *HOUSING , *POOR families , *PROTECTED areas , *LOW-income housing - Abstract
The city of Santos, SP, Brazil, has 434 thousand inhabitants, of whom 10% live in substandard housing conditions, such as slums, stilt houses, and tenements. Since the 19th century, tenements have been a problem in the city. Despite the establishment of social housing policies during the 20th century, from the Retirement and Pensions Institute to the Minha Casa, Minha Vida program (a Brazilian social housing program for low-income families), it is still a major issue. Starting in 2003, the City Hall has created projects for restoring the downtown historical heritage. The project Alegra Centro (an initiative to revitalize and develop the historical area in Santos, SP) generated conflicts, as many historical buildings in the protected areas had been occupied as tenements for many decades. What are the possibilities for heritage preservation projects in conjunction with an efficient social housing policy?. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RURAL-urban relations , *MONARCHY , *HISTORIC buildings , *PROCLAMATIONS , *REPUBLICANS - Abstract
Following the proclamation of the Monarchy, in Porto, monarchists from Lisbon also carried out an attempt to reinstate the Monarchy in the capital city and in the rest of the country, on January 22, 1919. It became known as the “Revolta de Monsanto”. The assault on the monarchist positions by Republican forces dictated the failure of the revolt and, indirectly, caused the failure of the proclamation of the Monarchy in the north. The research presented here aimed to reveal, through a quantitative and qualitative approach, the structure of the iconographic discourse that the Portuguese Illustration built about this historical episode. It was assumed as hypothesis that the discourse of the Portuguese Illustration aligned with the republican power, since the publication coated the republican triumph with a dose of epicness and valued the "brave" and "martyrs" of the Republic. INDIGENOUS peoples of South America , *HISTORIC buildings , *RACE , *SOCIAL structure , *SECONDARY analysis , *SCIENTIFIC community , *AUTONOMY (Psychology) , *MODERNITY , *RECOGNITION (Psychology) - Abstract
From an exhibitions of descriptive narratives of the Tupinambá People social organization in Brazil and from anthropological interpretations, this scientific work takes a critical approach to the presentation of gender relations in the word-village, identifying characteristics of the power coloniality, knowledge and gender that broke the indigenous community web and hid their autonomy. Brings up the creation of gender and race categories as legitimate exercise of power, understanding that the modernity optics remains nowadays through one bourgeois republic matrix. Identifies a reproduction of a modern discourse by the Democratic State, despite the recognition of the indigenous as subjects of the law, proposing one new interpretation of the present problem. Presents the return of autonomy based on pluralism, seeking the recognition of diversity as individuality and collectivity and, as a rupture, intends to fight for the existence of a State that restores its own jurisdiction and the internal community forum, which guarantees the deliberation of the peoples and allow the people themselves to build their historic project. The operationalization of the search is made with a sociological-juridical method, as well as by the analysis of secondary quantitative data and the bibliographic review for the theoretical basis decolonial. COLONIES , *HISTORIC buildings , *SOCIAL space , *SOCIAL reproduction , *PUBLIC spaces , *ZONING ,PORTUGUESE colonies - Abstract
This research aimed to analyze how social relations are reproduced in public spaces in the cities of Cuiabá and Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade during the colonial period. Using the discussions proposed by HENRI LEFEBVRE (1992) on the recognition of urban space as a social product, the approach of this work is based on the perception that the colonial period was responsible for forging in Mato Grosso a society derived from the historical conditions built by the colonization process Portuguese, whose main objective was to ensure the possession of the land and promote the exploitation of the mineral wealth existing in this territory based on the population established there. We also seek to work with the discussions proposed by CERTEAU (2014) whose importance is present in the approach that it carries out on daily life, pointing out that space is a practiced place. We also use the framework supported by SOBARSO (2006) in which the space is perceived as one that carries values of its sociais formation. Thus, we understand that the reproduction of social relationships occurs in the daily exchanges and in the coexistence between the different categories of people who lived and circulated in the colonial territory. SOCIAL injustice , *HISTORIC buildings , *LIBERATION theology , *SOCIAL context , *CHRISTOLOGY , *THEOLOGY , *FEMINIST theology - Abstract
This article investigates how Latin American theology sees the historical Jesus and builds his theology from it, as well as observing the implications for society. To do this, it is necessary to understand what this Historical Jesus is. The Historical Jesus is understood as the result of scientific interdisciplinary research, which is characteristic of the third phase of the research on Jesus, the third quest. Thus, it is noted that Latin American theology welcomes the results of this research on Jesus and from this builds his theology, having an important task, discussing faith and history. In this way, Latin American theologians will understand that the Historical Jesus is the basis of faith, so the starting point for a Latin American Christology must be the historical Jesus. Thus, since the historical observation of Jesus, Jesus is understood during a context of oppression and injustice, which applies his message to these contexts. Considering that the message and life of Jesus is imbued with various social, economic, political, and ideological aspects, the theology presented in Latin America must also be involved in a fight against oppression and social injustice, since the political and social context of Latin America is imbued with various types of oppression, exploitation, and injustice. In building intervention projects, the elaboration of the damage map, based on the identification of pathological manifestations, is crucial for the understanding of their respective causes, especially in historic buildings. So, the study of pathological manifestations becomes something vital, not only for the survival of historical patrimonies and the evolution of engineering, but also for the understanding of how the action of aggressive agents works and their negative effects on the structure and, thus, make possible the diagnosis. correct maintenance or recovery. Thus, this study aims to collect data on the pathological manifestations present on the facades of the Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Fátima church, classified as the main church outside Portugal in honor of this Saint, and to prepare the damage map from that mapping, in order to contribute to the conservation of this building. For this, the methodology consisted of a bibliographic review, selection of historical heritage and visual inspections in loco to map and photographically document the deterioration of the facades of this building. Subsequently, the cloth map was developed in order to contribute to future maintenance and restoration works of the construction under study. Based on visual inspections and on the damage map, it is possible to state that the structure, even with infiltration points caused by the presence of moisture in the balances, as there is no means of drainage for rainwater, and dirt in places of difficult access, It is not in a state of disrepair, showing good state of conservation and with periodic maintenance being carried out.

Energy efficiency has become an increasingly discussed topic in society and the scientific community. However, the studies that relate this theme to historic buildings are still few compared to contemporary buildings. However, the potential for reducing energy consumption for historic buildings is considerable and can assist in global energy efficiency goals. This research aimed to identify the main deficiencies of the RTQ-C (2010) and the modifications of the proposed text INI-C (2018) related to the labelling of the building envelope and to evaluate the efficiency level of a historic building by the prescriptive method of RTQ-C and the simulation model proposed in INI-C. To this end, the methodology was carried out in five stages: Survey of technical data; Labeling of the envelope by RTQ-C; Modeling and simulation; Calibration; Labeling of the envelope by INI-C. The results showed that the prescriptive method of RTQ-C has limitations, as it does not allow the characterization of fundamental building data, such as solar orientation. The INI-C simulation method showed improvements over the previous one, such as removing existing prerequisites in RTQ-C that generated a trend in labelling. However, it has not proved to be ideal for evaluating historic buildings because the construction methods proposed for the reference model, which bases the assessment, are far from the reality of historic buildings.

Intervention in ancient buildings with historical and architectural value requires traditional techniques, such as the use of lime mortars for internal and external wall renderings. In order to ensure the desired performance, these rendering mortars must be rigorously specified and quality controls have to be performed during application. The choice of mortar composition should take account of factors such as compatibility with the substrate, mechanical requirements and water behaviour. The construction schedule, which used to be considered a second order variable, nowadays plays a decisive role in the selection of the rendering technique, given its effects upon costs. How should lime-based mortars be specified? How much time is required for the application and curing of a lime-based render? This paper reflects upon the feasibility of using traditional lime mortars in three-layer renders inside churches and monasteries under adverse hygrothermal conditions and when time is critical. A case study is presented in which internal lime mortar renderings were applied in a church in Northern Portugal, where the very high relative humidity meant that several months were necessary before the drying process was complete.

VILLEGAGNON ,FORT ,HISTORIC BUILDINGS ,Naval Science - Abstract
The artillery of the Portuguese galleon, Santissimo Sacramento, has played an important part in the study of early modern gunfounding, in particular through the researches of John Guilmartin who has revisited this collection of cannons, updating the interpretation in the light of new discoveries. However this work has concentrated on the ballistics and technological aspects of the guns rather than in their historic importance. In the course of research into Elizabethan gun supply, the author located a number of records which throw light on the six of the cannons from the vessel. The Santissimo Sacramento was a 60-gun galleon, the flagship of the Company of Brazil, who sank during a storm near Bahia in May 1668 coming from Portugal to Brazil. The wreck was discovered in the 1970s and then investigated by an archaeological team under the auspices of the Brazilian Navy.

The European Union is pursuing an ambitious policy on climate action, urgently calling for an acceleration in the transition toward net-zero emissions by 2050. In this context, retrofitting historic constructions can play a key role in reducing European energy consumption and consequent emissions. What is more, beyond the opportunity for tackling climate change, thermal retrofits can improve indoor comfort while lowering operational costs, factors that are fundamental to ensure the continued use of historic constructions over time, and with that, improving their preservation and durability. The suitability of thermal insulation for this scope is still a debated topic. Thus, this study aims at contributing to the discussion by providing an overview on the feasibility of adopting thermal insulation for retrofitting external walls of historic buildings while preserving their significance and unique identities. Finally, the advantages of adopting thermal mortars rather than more traditional insulation solutions are outlined, and their potential efficacy is discussed.

ABSTRACT: In an increasingly current context of an architectural practice that is based on the restoration and rehabilitation of buildings, the stratigraphic analysis is presented as an indispensable work methodology that is still largely unknown in the area. We propose, within the context of architectural restoration and rehabilitation of the Palácio de Valflores, to present this work methodology. It will be pertinent to address the various phases of it, since its appearance in Italy, its evolution in Spain until its application in Portugal. We will address the most theoretical issues of its application and its working tools, while presenting a set of case studies that serve as the first contact of the reader with this methodology. In a context of architectural practice, it will not only be sufficient to scrutinize this method but also to demonstrate its deeper application in a current case - Palácio de Valflores. Thus, we will conclude our study with the typological and architectural analysis of this building, making known the works ongoing and presenting some of the stratigraphic analysis that is being developed in Valflores within the framework of a broader research work in architectural archeology. Incompatibility of Intervention ,Historic Buildings - Abstract
Preserving and safeguarding the identity and original authenticity are targets to accomplish, in an action of conservation, restoration or rehabilitation of buildings, taking into account that interventions respect the values of compatibility, adaptability and reversibility. Any intervention that takes place in a historic building, will depend on a historical survey which ideally includes the knowledge of the origin, the building design, materials and construction techniques used, building’ s occupants and constructive interventions realized. In a historic building, such as the military building called "Governor’s House of Square" in Elvas, after identifying the constructive anomalies and their causes, it has been found that human action was preponderant, because of vandalism and posterior constructive interventions. Some pathology identified are as, anomalies in the coating or failure in a lintel of the exterior wall. In the first case the anomalies are certainly due to incompatibility between the support material and the coating, because of the exposure to thermal amplitude. The admissible correction in this case will be the removal of the coating, exposure of hidden masonry and implementation of a compatible coating based on lime and sand. The later case shows that mechanical action involved has exceeded the capacity of flexural strength of the lintel. The posterior opening of the entrance caused changes in the distribution of vertical loads and consequently provoked the failure. In an attempt to preserve the building and the testimony of many years, it seems to be of interest to maintain the entrance and instead to replace the lintel adequately in material and dimension.
