The arrival of some 55 seminarians from St. Sava’s Theological Seminary in Belgrade, accompanied by a number of their professors, in the United Kingdom in 1916 and 1917, who took refuge at the colleges in Cuddesdon and Dorchester as well as at St. Stephen’s House in Oxford, was one of the more important events in the development of the relations between the Church of England and the Serbian Orthodox Church. Such an encounter allowed both sides to gain a better understanding of one another’s traditions. It significantly improved their friendly intercourse, established in the 19th Century. The liturgical implications of these relations were recognized in Serbia. For example, during the First World War it seems possible that some Anglicans had received Holy Communion from the Orthodox Serbian side. Also, in Serbia an official order was issued that burials taken for Anglicans should be given with full sacramental rites. In retrospect, it should be recognized that the colleges in Cuddesdon and Dorchester, respectively, facilitated the further development of Orthodox Liturgiology, including other theological disciplines among the Eastern Orthodox Schools in the 20th Century.

The article deals with the representation of the gay population in the discourse of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The declarations of Church bodies and officials, as well as unofficial public statements of prominent believers regarding gay persons are analysed. There is an ambivalent attitude towards gay people that is usually expressed in the ‘hate the sin, love the sinner’ formula. There is also a different kind of ambivalence: the Serbian Orthodox Church as well as its faithful either stick to the ‘policy of silence’ regarding LGBT(Q) issues, or they resort to a very strong moralistic judgment and condemnation. This was particularly noticeable around the time of the gay parade taking place in Belgrade in 2010, as well as during the public discussion before the passing of the anti-discrimination law in the national assembly in 2009. The inclusion of philosophical and medical concepts in theological discourse can also be ascertained. As a result, besides the expected ‘sin’, the categories of ‘unnatural/contrary to nature’ and ‘(mental) illness’ are often mentioned in the Church discourse, which is usually saturated with accentuated anti-Westernism.

Arhimandrit sv. The Archimandrite St. Justin Popović (born April 7th 1894, died April 7th 1979, proclaimed saint on 2nd May 2010) belongs to the group of most discernible and outstanding representatives of the Serbian Orthodox theologians. The author of approximately 50 books, Popović is a very cultivated theologian, poet, distinguished expert of Dostojevski, as well as a fervent monk and venerator of Saints. But he affirms that there is no possibility for the Unity of Christians outside the Orthodox Church. Regretfully, his ideas are anti–oecumenical, with a strong criticism of the occidental humanism. Prof. Franc Perko, the former Archbishop in Belgrade, wrote: »I can not understand that this man, a thinker, philosopher, theologian, who lived as a Saint, was so unilateral, sometimes, so blind and unjust in his estimation of the occidental Christianity.« (1997, 5)

The Serbian myth of Kosovo is a part of the Serbian national identity. The aim of this diploma thesis is to explain how the Serbian myth of Kosovo was created and how it influenced the political, religious and cultural aspects of the life of the Serbs. Its aim is also to define the Serbian myth of Kosovo and to compare the Serbian myth of Kosovo to the base of Christianity where we need to emphasize the motif of betrayal. The two roots of the Serbian myth of Kosovo are the motif of betrayal and motif of heroism. Princ Lazar and Miloš Obilić are the main characters of the motif of heroism and thus two of the most important characters in Serbian history. The nationalist-leaning political party used the myth of Kosovo as a crucial political myth in post socialistic Serbia in order to become a major political force. They cooperated with the Serbian Orthodox Church because Serbian Orthodox church was a guardian of Serbian national culture and traditions in the centuries of subordination to the Ottoman rule. Church was therefore a creator of the collective consciousness and the ideological framework of the Serbian nation. From the previously written it is clear that the myth of Kosovo is in common to the Serbian politics and religion.
