Abstract Objective: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of amniotic membrane transplantation for ocular surface reconstruction. Methods: Prospective study including 23 eyes of 21 patients who underwent amniotic membrane transplantation at Hospital de Clínicas da Universidade Federal do Paraná (HC-UFPR) and at Cirurgia e Diagnose em Oftalmologia do Paraná (CDOP) clinic, located in Curitiba, PR, Brazil, from may 2015 to july 2019. The amniotic membrane was collected from elective and term cesarean delivery, and conserved in preservation medium and glycerol 1:1, stored at -80° Celsius. The membrane was fixed on the ocular surface with 10-0 nylon, 8-0 vicryl, biological glue or a combination of these materials. Results: The ocular surface reconstruction was successful in 22 eyes (95.6%). Failure was observed only in 1 case (bullous keratopathy) in which the condition was maintained postoperatively. Patients' age ranged from 11-82 years, with a mean age of 37.4 years. There was a higher incidence in males (66.6%). A difference was perceived in the distribution of the affected eye (which was greater in the right eye - 65.2%). As for the previous ophthalmic surgery history, 12 of the 23 eyes had a positive history (52.2%). It was observed that all patients who had preoperative visual acuity assessed showed improvement or maintenance of corrected visual acuity. In the postoperative period, complications associated with the underlying disease were observed, although not particularly related to the amniotic membrane transplantation. There were not any cases of postoperative infection. Conclusions: There was an improvement in the general state of the ocular surface in almost all of the cases in which the transplant was performed. Therefore, the amniotic membrane can be considered a good alternative for reconstructing the ocular surface, as a single or supporting treatment.

The use of amniotic membrane in ophthalmology has been increasing in recent years due to its multiple biological and tectonic properties, improvement in the process of obtaining, ease of use, and advancement in tissue engineering. The amniotic membrane has become one of the main adjuvant treatments, in ophthalmic surgery as well as in other medical-surgical specialties. The development of tissue engineering has allowed it to be used, not only in its classic form, but also by the use of drops and other presentations. Introduction: Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis are two serious immune diseases within the context of bullous mucocutaneous syndrome. Bioidentical recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) is available in concentrations and purity suitable for therapeutic use in long time stable formulations. Beneficial effects in several skin pathologies and lesions have been reported (traumatic and surgical wound healing, laser induced wounds, abnormal scars, keloids, radiation or chemotherapy induced dermatitis, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation or for skin aging damage repairing) and also may be considered for the treatment of several oropharingeal and high gastroesophageal tract mucosa diseases (mouth sores, pharyngeal fistulas, ulcers), and several corneal or conjunctive mucosa lesions. rhEGF has not shown any important side or collateral effects in humans or in laboratory experimentation animals, showing optimal tolerability and safety with continuous use for months. Compounding gives advantages of versatility, individualization, personalization, molecular stability, safety and effectiveness in ideal conditions, showing good tissue penetration, both on intact skin and skin lesions that expose the lower planes to the surface. rhEGF compounds can be considered for prevention or as a treatment of diverse skin and mucosa diseases and conditions through compounding preparations., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier España, S.L.U. Case Reports: We present the case of a patient with neurotrophic queratitis in the left eye treated with a Tutopatch® cover and platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Solid autologous PRP was placed in the bed of the ulcer and Tutopatch® was sutured to the conjunctiva., Discussion: We found this form of treatment very effective for progressive ulcers. The application of amniotic membranes in patients diagnosed with skin damage is a valid treatment option. A care plan following the Virginia Henderson model and NANDA, NOC and NIC taxonomy was applied to 36 patients admitted to the Dr. Miguel Enríquez hospital with different cutaneous lesions. This membrane has already been used for years due to its healing properties. These are attributed to antimicrobial properties reducing infection risk and promoting epithelial activity. They can decrease the need for the use of antibiotics, expendable materials, and can be applied during long periods of healing. This decreases the cost of wide spectrum antibiotic treatments, as well as the time patients spend in hospital. The present study was made in order to determine if granulation tissue development after treatment with Human Amniotic Membrane (HAM) is related with instrumental photoplethysmographically evidenced changes of the "ulcus layer". Daily, HAM fragments were disposed along the continuity solution of external patients with opened postthrombotic ulcus cruris. Instrumental examinations were made before, a week after and two weeks after treatment, and after the complete ulcus healing. Ulcus with a slight granulous or fibrogranulous layer developed a granulation tissue within the first week of treatment. On the contrary, in continuity solutions with necrotic layer, treatment with HAM failed. After the first week of treatment, a 84% of ulcus with slight granulation and fibrinogranulation, presented some sphygmic variations respect to baseline levels, like: raising in the amplitude and dicrotism appearing. Within the first week, all of the continuity solutions showed significant sphygmograms with a regular vascularization on the layer, this period of time concurred with the complete granulation phase of the ulcus. Long-preserved HAM stimulates in a significant way the appearing of the granulation tissue, within the first week of treatment. Sphygmic raisings are directly proportional with the amount of granulated tissue evidenced on the layer of the continuity solution.
