This paper analyze multiple experiences about the functioning of the first Open-Door in Argentina's inside, the "Asilo Colonia Regional Mixto de Alienados Oliva", created in the province of Cordoba in 1914. We approach a set of clinical histories and specialized publications of the institutional bulletin, deepening in theoretical and therapeutic processes articulated during the first decade of hospitalization of a patient who lived in Oliva most of her adult life. This study case questions the relevance given to this madhouse as a space of reclusion and social control. We show that, in a context of crisis about institutional resources and transformation into psychiatric models, the configuration of know-what and know-how of these alienists did not constitute a monolithic authority, accounting for how the behaviors of patients and their relatives, values and social uses defined types of income, diagnoses and treatment possibilities. The methodological integration of different values in relation to the ecosystem services (ES) is a methodological challenge to be solved. This paper aims at integrating market and cultural values associated with the ES which can be found in the Mar Chiquito Biosphere reserve in the southeast of the province of Buenos Aires. This methodological approach allowed us to identify and assess the local benefits of the wetland, and to detect that they are equal to the budgetary allocation in social services such as health care, education, and the promotion of tourism of the homonymous municipality. NEOLIBERALISM -- History , *AGRICULTURE , *AGRICULTURAL industries , *STATE action (Civil rights) , *AGRICULTURAL economics , *HISTORY , *TWENTIETH century - Abstract
During the neoliberal period, the State reconfigured its way of acting in diverse spaces of the society. In that context, the enactment of the Decreto de Desregulación Económica 2284 de 1991 had a deep impact in the Argentinian rural sector. Because of that, we analyze the problematization process of the issue by different agents; the position took by the State materialized in the text of the Decree; and some reactions that it aroused, based in the classic contributions of Oszlak and O'Donnell. In this manner, we deepen our understanding of the strategies and forms of communication that are articulated in the process of adopting a public policy. In methodological terms, we reviewed the content of some discourses published in specialized newspapers between 1990 and 1991 and we apply discourse analysis techniques on the original Decree and two company's advertising. This paper concludes that even when a favorable position about agrarian deregulation had consensus between hegemonic agents, the intensity of the public policy transcended its expectations, empowering profound economic, social and political transformations. This paper analyzes the distribution of specialized subjects devoted to health care in the Argentine territory according to the First National Census (1869). We present statistical estimations and visual resources that contribute to illustrate the logic of the absolute and relative presence of graduates and empirical practitioners. By articulating census data with input from specialized bibliography, the paper provide evidence for certain variables associated with the presence of the State, the differential socio-economic development of the regions, and the rural-urban splits in the long first half of the nineteenth century. The purpose of this paper is to enrich the analytical record of the process of formation of the political system of the Argentine “Confederation” in the 1850s, from the specificities of San Juan province. We considered variations of San Juan political and economic integration in the national and “transcordillerano” stage. We reveal that the attempts of San Juan authorities to (re)articulated in a long-standing activity as overland trade with Chile, though not always successful, were important both to define provincial political tensions and the gravitation of the province in the political and institutional frame of the “Confederation”. So, we analyzed provincial, regional and international aspects of this process, taking into account the multiplicity of actors, resources, ideas and practices that were involved. This paper represents a contribution to the knowledge about the experience of the Japanese community in rural areas of Argentina, particularly Buenos Aires (state) across the first half of the 20th century. With the objective of updating knowledge about this subject, a comparison was made between communities in peri-urban agricultural colonies: La Capilla, located in Florencio Varela, and Justo José de Urquiza, La Plata. We also focus on the origins, incursions, productive profiles, and the level of participation of Argentine and/or Japanese entities that influenced how each community developed, as well as successful companies and migrant settlement. URBAN renewal , *POPULISM , *SOCIAL change , *LOW-income housing , *PUBLIC spaces , *WORKING class , *TWENTIETH century , *HISTORY , *SOCIAL history ,ARGENTINE politics & government - Abstract
This paper focuses on different urban and architectural projects, as viewed by the local press during Lencinas' administrations, a member of the Radical political party in the Mendoza province who was active from 1918 to 1930. Among the corpus of projects, we focus specifically on public spaces and housing for the low-income population, which became a significant point of attention in the first decade of the 20th century. The political change brought about by the arrival to power of nontraditional, underrepresented groups had an impact on different cultural fields in Mendoza. Lencina's arrival to power fostered social transformations that benefited the low-income social strata that had been neglected by previous governing elites. Among other changes, the new leaders implemented laws that favored the working class, such as retirement for public employees, and the 8-hour work day. These shifts in the political sphere had an impact on the architectural and spatial spheres. In this paper we systematically trace articles published in the contemporary local press in order to establish relationships between some of these projects and the populist political ideology of these governments. This paper examines the reception of Vygotsky's work in Argentina during the 1960 decade until the beginnings of '70s in a disciplinary crossing with psychiatry, neurology, psychology, and pedagogy. All these disciplines placed the child as a study object in order to approach the neurological problems related to the language and the learning difficulties. This paper is focused on the analysis of Azcoaga's work within that period using the concept of reception formulated by Jauss (1981) that allows showing some of the first readings and conceptualizations done by Vygotsky. Some of Azcoaga's professional fields involved in Vygotsky's work reception, the predominant theoretical framework and the thinking traditions with those committed institutions in its reception are studied in this paper. The article analyzes the interpretations of the mobilizations and shaping of Catholic crowds in Argentina during the first half of the twentieth century. First, the text identifies the performative effects of the "classical paradigm" of secularization. Secondly, the article proposes relocating the contributions of the political approach, conceived in the context of the 1980s, in a broader explanatory framework, open to recent contributions of social and cultural history. To this end, the paper proposes a model based on the concept of crowd with the aim of discussing different dimensions of the phenomenon, highlighting its multifaceted nature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyzes the central role played by Argentinian modernista writer Enrique Rodriguez Larreta in the vindication of the Castilian cultural heritage in early 20thcentury Argentina. As part of the wave of hispanophile sentiment produced by the Spanish-American War and the debates on identity linked to the celebration of Argentina's Independence Centenary, Larreta aims to create a new Argentinian identity of Castilian filiation based on the Spanish cultural heritage epitomized by Golden Age. This profoundly conservative aesthetic project finds expression in his successful historic novel La gloria de don Ramiro, conceived as an archaist textual simulacrum that reconstructs the historical reality of Phillip II's reign. Throughout the 19th century, in the context of setting up the new republican order, the humanization of physical punishments was promoted. As part of a cultural climate affected by the individualization of the body, modern educational trends questioned the excessive punishment of children. This paper discusses the reviews of such disciplinary practices in Buenos Aires elementary schools and its countryside, with the aim of reflecting on how this "civilized awareness" process struggled for a punishment economy to design--at the end of the century--a new ethical code of honor and virtue based on self-discipline as the kind of behavior that should be adopted by future citizens of the republic. This paper analyzes the economic impact of Peronism in the Nahuel Huapi region and reviews the material and symbolic aspects of this district, which borders Chile and is associated with both the existing national park in the region and the city of Bariloche. To this end, and in dialogue with the material processes of the period, self-recognition and links to other regions were analyzed. The contribution of this manuscript is its recognition that despite Peronism having been experienced as one of the most significant development shifts in the Nahuel Huapi region, and especially in the town of San Carlos de Bariloche, documents both provide evidence of continuity processes and discuss the existing account of a break. Unlike most Latin-American countries where collective bargaining is decentralized at the firm level, in Argentina -as well as in Brasil-, collective bargaining is centralized and carried out by a single union per activity branch. However, in Argentina these branch unions articulate themselves with a union-based representation in the shop-floor, the so called “internal commissions". The first two Peronist governments (1946-1955) are a crucial period in the development of these organisms. In this paper we study the conflicts related to the internal commissions that arose in these years in the metallurgical and the shoe industries and we analyze the rules and regulations governing the internal commissions fixed in the collective labor agreements of 1954 and the tensions that emerged in their negotiation. This paper takes very briefly on six decades of the history of psychology in the city of La Plata (Argentina), from the creation of the Pedagogic Department in the National University, in 1906, until the coup d'état of 1966, that put an end to the expansion of psychological studies that had started in 1958, after the creation of the psychology program. In that period, psychology would go through different phases, marked by oppositions such us “positivist naturalism"/ “anti-positivist humanism", “theoretical training" / “professional training", “scientific psychology" / “psychoanalytic psychology", etc. The goal of this work is to make an account of what happened at the time, giving as much importance to the individual actors as to the institutional and political factors that were present in the context. The methods are the traditional ones for history (mainly de gathering of oral, documentary and bibliographic sources. However, they have been interpreted from a critical perspective. In the present paper we analyze the emergence of political-union identities, and its search for new forms of organization, in the final period of the dictatorship called "Revolución Argentina". To do so we reconstruct the different strategies of the new peronist unionism, from 1970 until 1973, by portraying their relations with previous combative experiences, and their opposition to the national CGT led by Rucci, to the dictatorship and to Lanusse's political exit. The empirical work will be analyzed in the frame of the question about the relationship between institutions and political identities, specifically the organizations (unions and unions groupings) with the workers and popular identities, and the dispute over their representation. Herein, we present a summary about the contribution to the herpetology by Raymond F. Laurent (1916-2005) who was the first president of the Asociación Herpetologica Argentina. Born in Belgium, he worked as researcher at Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren and at Harvard University, and explored the herpetology in Uvira, Rwanda and Katanga. In 1964 he moved to San Miguel de Tucumán (Argentina) to research in CONICET and Fundación Miguel Lillo, and to teach at the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán. He published more than 200 papers on taxonomy, systematics and morphology of African and South American herpetofauna. Most of these studies still constitute the basis to understand some classifications. As the first AHA's president, he encouraged young people to carry on new research topics and was a caring mentor and a major influence in the development of the career of many Argentine herpetologists. Furthermore, he contributed to increase the level of the Herpetology among the Biological Sciences in Argentina. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses the articles written by Enrique Pichon-Rivière and Ana Pampliega de Quiroga for the magazine Primera Plana, between 1966 and 1967. We have specially focused on the articles that try to situate the subjective effects of socio-economic and cultural modernization of the moment. In this regard, we have been interested in showing that these writings reflect the tension of a time in which the traditional ways of living and thinking coexisted with discourses and practices that questioned them. Furthermore, and considering the political situation of the moment in which these works were published, we went through some articles on this topic. We notice a stand in favour of the validity of the democratic system. This standpoint confronted with the media campaign led by the magazine itself, which sought to create the necessary consensus for the military coup of June 1966. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents advances in research and extension work with groups of women workers who display livelihood strategies and income generation as a group in the period 2001-2012, in Santa Rosa, La Pampa. The recovery phase of economic and labor market recovery from 2002, did not impact on society in an equitable manner, the lower-income social sectors continued to develop low-profit activities in the field of informal market and precarious. Access to work, and the conditions under which it develops, demonstrates a heterogeneous scenario, unequal and exclusionary. Gender inequalities are added to the class, and the difficulties of access to remunerated activities, the study population adds a huge burden of unpaid domestic work - care - for which there is a gap in the design of public policy, which exposes them to new inequalities. Economies of poverty, work and collective action, empowerment of women, new work identities, inequalities, segregation; intersect in interpretive and are embodied in each of the workers. The present paper results from a research project of wider scope, Rural Territorial Development. Territorial management in the Guatraché Department, La Pampa, which shows the findings of research carried out in the Guatraché Department, in the Province of La Pampa. The project aims at producing a panorama of the agricultural activity of this area from the beginnings of the process of colonization in 1879 -which marks the occupation of the territory after the clearing of the aborigines, coinciding with the end of the “Desert Campaign"-, until the present time –which is framed by the complexity of globalization. The province of La Pampa, at that time Territory of Central La Pampa, with its East and South East areas showing climate and soil parameters suitable for the above-mentioned activities, turned into the setting of an intense colonization sustained by various railway companies, pillars of the economic system prevailing in the Argentine Republic in late nineteenth and early twentieth century. As part of this territory, the Guatraché Department was the scenario of an important agricultural and stockbreeding activity -this being so at least until the start of severe climate crises which, along with international events (the Second World War) disrupted the model. After the former, the diversification of farming complemented with stockbreeding, where sheep were gradually replaced by cattle, characterized the activity until the nineties. At that time, a new international scenario marked by globalization, with the liberation of the markets and state decentralization, formed part of the neo-liberal politics of the times. The rural sector was also part of the process and its consequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An intense process of state development, which generated social intervention and new capacities to produce public policies, took place since the forties in Argentina. This phenomenon was accompanied by trends towards an increasing centralization of the political power in the Executive branch of the government. Within this context, this paper attempts to explore these processes from a perspective based on a provincial jurisdiction, constructing an account that locates the history of this political entity within the more comprehensive story of the structuring of the Interventionist State. In order to achieve this purpose, the history of one provincial health department and its relationships with the Federal State organizations are analyzed, trying to unravel the reactions that the provincial state elaborated to the process of centralization of social policies, which accompanied the emergence of Peronism. The set of qualities that promoted power groups, in times of modernism, on wine homesteads, became identity models. Examples which should imitate to be considered part of a progressive society, modern and civilized. However, it is important to note that the modern features that are touted rebelled aspects of a reality that is meant to represent and also hid a social and economic context opposite. Therefore, in this paper we propose an interdisciplinary approach made from an analysis of historical architectural wine homesteads between 1885 and 1910, as a representative identity model of the ultimate expression of modern liberal discourse in order to understand concepts and cultural values influencing local society. We analyzed both edit historical documentary sources, as well as buildings that remain today. The importance of the work lies on one hand, in enriching current architectural historical studies on the subject, and on the other, which in turn allows us to understand and define variables of analysis that integrate the networks of relationships that come together in the cultural significance of wine homesteads. These houses are considered cultural heritage at Cuyo Region. Finally, this information is currently required and can be applied in the interpretation of programs homesteads and cultural routes of local tourism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study tries to make a revision of the conflicts, negotiations and coexistences that characterized the configuration of the pedagogical field in Argentina during the 1930s, as well as recognizing the place that the New School occupied in it. This school of thought was not totally consistent as a whole: in fact, there was a wide range of interpretations about these ideas. In the Argentine pedagogical field of this decade, the relationship between the State and the educationalists who promoted New School's ideas was not always characterized by imposition or transgression. The New School wasn't an outsider in the educational system and the educational policy received its influence. Argentine promoters of New School that gathered around La Obra tried to present themselves as innovators in terms of pedagogical knowledge in order to appear as the only group capable of transforming the educational system as well as the only qualified to become spokesman for all the teachers in the country. This paper will analyze the underlying logic of the speeches of teachers and educationalists. It will be stated throughout this article that even though the Argentine pedagogical field had close connections with politics, it also followed its own path. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the end of the nineteenth century, a process of modernization and development took place in Argentina, within the frame of the nation-state consolidation. In this context, the country witnessed a discursive profusion that expected to introduce disciplinary instruments into society, among which the creation of a modern maternal ideal can be mentioned. This paper analyzes the main topics of such discourses, through one the main media available to spread them in rural central and southern Buenos Aires in our period: the local press. This paper analyses popular wisdom and memory transmission regarding State terrorism and forced disappearance, which are circulating among youth living around Hospital Posadas, located in Haedo, a province to Buenos Aires, Argentina. At this hospital, there was, under the military dictatorship (1976-1983), a Clandestine Imprisonment Center, where people were kept prisoner as disappeared. Therefore, at this facility both practices of health restoration and torture and murder perpetration coexisted. Through thirty indepth interviews carried out among neighbor young people, the existence of manifold knowledge fractures and memory transmission about State violence is verified, being a result from the social relations breakthrough that used to articulate the neighborhood and the hospital, and from the material life conditions promoting undifferentiated historical and political time awareness. SCHOOL discipline , *EDUCATION , *CIVICS education , *HISTORY of schools , *SOCIALIZATION , *SOCIAL order , *CHILD psychology , *HISTORY , *TWENTIETH century ,20TH century medical history - Abstract
In the Modernity there was formed an idea of the body centred on the regulation of the life of the population (bios) and on the "disciplinamiento" of the body of the individuals (biopoder). In the beginning of the 20th century in Argentine, in the context of the "social question", one appealed to the representations concerning the idea of the social body and of the body of the individuals. To the body of the Nation he imagined it under the notions of disease and health, integration and exclusion. Since then, the metaphors of the social body have not stopped being present in the rhetoric of the national discourse in different contexts. This paper study the diffusion and intervention of the medical speech (hygienist and eugenista) in the school institution by the intention of acting on the body of the small students to the effects of moralizing his behaviors and of guaranteeing an integral formation that was preserving his physical and intellectual health while they were estimated as the civil futures of the republic. MIDDLE schools , *COLLECTIVE representation , *MIDDLE school teachers , *HISTORY education - Abstract
This paper deals with the social representations of teachers who teach history in middle school in the city of Rosario, centering on their teaching practice, their concepts about the discipline they teach, its methodological and cognitive aspects. This allows us to identify stereotypes, beliefs and values that steer the development of their practices. This makes possible its problematization and a critical reflection about the possibility of improving them. The same investigation instrument -the narrative interview- constitutes, at the same time, the first device of intervention: it makes possible an intersubjective encounter in which the subject's career as a teacher is reconstructed. This proposal inaugurates a space that is open to a reflexive thinking, allowing a contextualized understanding of the decisions made in the approach to the practice of teaching history, its limits and possibilities in the middle level of education. It's a preliminary presentation of the final report, following the codifying of the instruments; and it's a first analytical and interpretative approach to the results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to analyse the relationship between José Ingenieros's cases and biographical narrative procedures. The cases were derived from medical histories and were published in Criminología and other books. Biographies were textual models privileged by positivist historians. One thing in common between these cases and biographies is the exemplar and non-anonymous condition of the characters. That phenomenon is closely related to medical professional performance, expanded to other intellectual realms thanks to dominant cientificismo. This situation led doctors to interpret political and social history. Moreover, some physicians' professional biographies could be read in the cases because an autobiographical intention has penetrated the apparently neutral and objective medical discourse. The productive exploitation of the "territorial near west" since the end of the nineteenth century was based on the natural supply according to the priority bestowed by the prevailing development model, within the framework of the insertion of the Argentine Republic in the international division of labour. This paper determines the production cycles defined from the use and transformation of the ecosystems (pasture, forest extraction) or their substitution by farming, and holds the hypothesis that the former was limited with regard to the process of exploitation and plundering to which it was subjected. Overloading the fields with livestock, as if they were the rich grasslands of the province of Buenos Aires, agricultural practices and deforestation caused, within a few years, soil exhaustion and erosion resulting from trampling and dryness. During last years as much in the frame of the celebration of the 100 years public festivities of both most important cities located in the Gulf San Jorge basin (Comodoro Rivadavia and Caleta Olivia) as in the most recent commemoration of the centenary of the discovery of the oil in the zone, women appropriated diverse uses of the past to ask for the right to have a past. Beyond the public festivities which were arranged from the official sphere, the petroleum companies or the mass media, an important group of women organized different commemoration practices; the publication of books and photographic samples stood out among them. It has allowed a fruitful exchange among people who are in the academy and out of it. In the paper I try to show that this memoralist outbreak in terms of gender, having revalued topics such as the child-rearing, the family care, the informal sociability puts the emphasis on the domesticity and the exaltation of the kinship networks to emphasize the rol of women in that past. As the cult of motherhood represented social inclusion for these women, in this work I suggest that it is again the articulation of women - maternity - family - history - nation what returns to center stage, but those who promote such social commemoration practices have created places of memory in the center of the sphere of production: places where the men had dominated historically. We analyze in this paper the use of photography in the Catholic historiography of La Pampa in general, and we particularly focus on the production of a group of priests who, from the 1920s onwards, have built the 'official history' of the Catholic Church in the region. The works by Roberto Tavella (1924), Lorenzo Massa (1967), Cayetano Bruno (1983), and Roberto Tavella and Celso Valla (1974) belong in that construction, in which the photographs tend to empirically support what the written text strives to state: that the Church was a central component in the civilizing process of La Pampa. This paper studies the links among history, memory and subjectivity in an Argentine documentary: M of Nicolás Prividera. It analyzes the tour of the protagonist who tries to reconstruct the history of his mother disappeared during the last military Argentine dictatorship. This tour is constituted in critical memory since it supposes an active search of fragments of the past, as an interpellation to others in this search. This exercise of critical memory is the one that enables the subject to present and future actions. The film demonstrates the labor that the new generations realize with the incomplete legacy that they received because of traumatic situations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INDIGENOUS peoples of the Americas treaties , *INDIGENOUS peoples of the Americas , *NINETEENTH century , *POLITICAL participation , *HISTORY - Abstract
In this paper, transformations of internal links within the indigenous political field are explored, focusing on the last decades of the frontier. This period, in which the state progresses towards its political unification and institutional consolidation, state policies regarding Indian people show a more unified profile and aim to create the conditions necessary for the frontiers advance. The peace treaties policy, extended to almost the whole indigenous map, will be one of the devices through the state will attempt to canalize and to order its relations with different chiefs and groups. Our interest attempts to identify the probable conditionings and influences of this policy on the indigenous population at the conformation, strengthening and weakening of their political alliances. We intend specifically to reconstruct-within this context-the process of the Calfucurá's leadership, to identify the impact of state interventions over the extent of his political summoning capacity during this period. YOUTH policy , *SOCIAL mobility , *STUDENT activism , *NARRATIVES - Abstract
The paper presents a state-of-the-art of Argentine youth politics in the late 1960s —between 1968-1969, related to the popular mobilization known as the Cordobazo—and today's youth politics. The research focuses on education and the student movement, social movements, political parties, and trade unions, as well as cultural movements, and youth aesthetics. For each historical period, the article analyzes the most significant events, actions, practices, and problems explored by the existing academic research on the subject. At this point, this state-of-the-art does not include other discourses on Argentine youth (such as the media, or public policy). Far from ignoring such discourses or narratives of youth, this is a methodological approach at this early stage of the research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with some beliefs and attitudes produced by the victorious groups of the coup d'état that took place in October 1820. We attempt to show that after these violent political episodes, centralist sectors displayed a conciliatory rhetoric that can be traced in periodicals and in the messages announced by men with political and military power in the province. Such a rhetoric was accompanied by measures taken by the provincial executive power and they were intended to integrate some federal sectors recently defeated. This statement allows to question the idea that October winners started an intense revenge over defeated groups, which could be noticed in the new military reforms where no former revolutionary would be included. In 1779 the fort of Carmen de Patagones was founded in the South of the current province of Buenos Aires in response to the Bourbons politics to ensure the territorial control of its colonial dominions. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the development of this town from its establishment to the Rosas government period, recognizing different stages. The first one makes reference to the process of occupation of the land through a particular relation with the native groups of the zone. In a second stage, the fort obtains a relative autonomy in the handling of its political and administrative matters. And in the third one, the government attempted --with relative success-- to limit this autonomy exerting a greater control on the life of the fort. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DIFFERENTIATION (Sociology) , *CULTURE , *PHOTOGRAPHY & society , *COLLECTIVE representation , *SYMBOLISM , *HISTORY - Abstract
To make an approach about the history of people, also means inquiring in its culture, taking into account that those signs which may seem irrelevant will became significant. Thus, many symbolic elements can be rescued from different sources and we can start a huge variety of contrast which legitimize the various identities. The scene of this interpretation will be Mar del Plata, a seaside place during the first years of the twentieth century. In such period, the rural aspect was changing into a typical seaside European village where they could show off and prove their roles. We'll search for unpublished material from the files of Stella Maris School and Church, written papers and visual images. So, as long as we accede to these pieces of visual and written evidence we'll have clear social representations and testimonies of how elite groups held their privileges as opposed to the permanent population. The two hundredth anniversary of the British Invasions of the Silver River (1806-1807) gives rise to a reading of the events from the viewpoint of one of the cities involved: Montevideo. The main qualities which emerged at that time and which are dealt with in this paper are twofold. In the first place, loyalty, which also allows the wealth of the city-port to be appreciated and was expressed by means of individual and corporate decisions; amongst others, those of the Commercial Body and the Guild of Landowners, Meat-Curers and Purveyors. In the second place, autonomy; a blend of the special sovereignty which is deeply rooted in the Hispanic tradition, and commercial jealousy in the face of the arrogance of the Viceroyal Capital. Loyalty and autonomy are the thus the qualities which are weighed in the struggle against the invader and which come into play a few years later at the start of the process of independence. In the last quarter of the 20th century intense changes took place in the macroeconomic conditions of Argentina. These transformations, based on the application of an economic policy contrary to the tenets of the welfare state and on a reshaping of the roles of the state, the market and society as a whole, deeply hindered the development of the local production. This article describes the main traits of Argentine economic policy between 1975 and 2005 and its impact on the dairy industry in the country as a whole and in La Pampa in particular taking into consideration a wide variety of sources which include not only statistical data and official information but also academic papers and reports published in national and local newspapers. Studies about property rights have only recently started to attract the attention of economic historians in Argentina. In this paper, focusing upon normative aspects, it is our purpose to analyze changes and continuities produced within legal conceptions concerning the rights of property, family and heritage rights by the second half of the 19th century. Debates and speeches from politicians, lawyers, and owners, will be analyzed, as well as the expression they found in two key works: the Rural Code of the Province of Buenos Aires, from 1865, and the Civil Code from 1869 (promulgated in 1871), which stated -with different shades of meaning- private property as absolute, individual and inalienable. The balance between continuity/break up of conceptions and speeches posed from the law field will also allow to analyze its impact and projection over the configuration of the Argentinian society during the 20th century.
