Within the classical debate between the discrete or continuous nature of linguistic phenomena, there is controversy regarding the relationship between different lexical categories and the internal relationship between the different words that are part of a specific category. In this contribution, we present the results of topological studies provided by Neurolinguistics and studies of acquisition, loss, processing, and storage conducted in Psycholinguistics to try to verify if there is any evidence in favor of or against the discrete nature of lexical categories, with special attention to the distinction between nouns and verbs and to the Indo-European languages. As a result of this work, we consider that there are sufficient indications to suggest that speakers distinguish lexical categories discreetly and homogeneously, but also establish a series of additional correlations between the members of these categories and different properties (among which the semantic component stands out). In this sense, we believe it is necessary to distinguish between these two levels of study: the discrete and automated nature of lexical categories and the various correlations that both speakers and researchers themselves can make with different study variables.
